This place was beautiful. Located on the end cap of a small shopping strip. Bright beautiful sign notices a mural after driving away. We were greeted with warm smiles and a calming scent. A display of pastries and coffee being made poetry/spoken word playing in the background. The owner asked if it was our first time we said yea and she gave us a personal tour. The cozy corner although not in a corner you have a beautiful comfortable sitting area where books of change are displayed near the entrance. There's a beautiful reading corner for children Art ~ jewelry and other items are displayed throughout by local artist. Stage area for open mic spoken word and other activities take places There's an upper level where she has a podcast room. This space is so nice with equipment and lighting everything you need to record. There are wellness Wednesday and other community events posted as well. I'd say this is more of a book store which serves basic drip coffee and a few (very few) other drinks...nothing cafe about the place. Upon entering the insence was a bit strong for my taste and lessened the whole experience for me. The eclectic decor was nice and the childrens reading area was really cute. read more

Vibe- BROWN SUGAR CAFE & BOOKS IS AN ENTIRE VIBE! I felt so relaxed and clam as soon as I walked in. There were incense sticks burning and 90s R&B music playing that gave the ultimate vibe for a bookstore. There's an area for the kids with many books with representation (I love that), places to sit and read, a coffee bar, and there's also an extra room upstairs to hold book club meetings or podcast shows. Customer service- Top tier! I was greeted as soon an I walked in and the ladies were eager to help. Food/drinks- I had an iced chai latte with oatmilk that was good. I love this location! Such a bright and welcoming space with such a wide variety of books! This is not your average book store. You just have to go and find out for yourself! There's a small cafe that offers drinks and food. There's also a small stage for performances and even an upstairs. There's plenty of cozy seating so you can get invested into the story. There's a jewelry display, inspirational cards, and even a children's section I can't wait to visit again to get Afro-Latino children's books! read more

The freshly lit incense was prominent when you walked in, like it was luring you to a great experience. I ordered a hot tea which was lackluster and short. I'm used to other shops serving you the entire brew. I felt a little awkward when the counter girl sipped on the rest of my un poured tea from behind the bar. (Like I paid $5 for 4 oz of tea and you get to sip the rest of it and have a whole vibe) I'm all for enhancing your culture & experience through reading but unfortunately I felt obviously odd. If you are black this is a great spot to freely be you, if you are not prepare to feel awkward and odd because you are "not black." From the customers to the owners and those working there, this is a very exclusive spot. (Even if you are a minority) The place itself is very nice, the seating is not the most comfortable but the building is very quaint. Nice to see more black owned coffee shops but it's a 3 star for the tea (oh and no decaf coffee available) read more

I just happened to be passing by and did a u-turn. Inside is larger than you would expect. Seating area, stage and shelves/display of books. I ddnt try any food or drink. It was at the end of the day but enough time to browse. The selection is a nice size and varied. A lot of popular titles. Reminded me of a local library minus the old books. The kids section was really nice. The decor all around was inviting. I can see coming in a sitting for a cup of coffee and starting a few pages of a book. I'm originally from San Antonio and have lived in the Katy area for the last six years. Visiting the cafe with my daughter yesterday was the first time I felt like I was at home. The staff was kind and the ambiance was great. It felt like a safe space to learn, grow, and explore my curiosities.
