Saturday Morning 8:30am we stopped here on our way to California and this was the SPOT! Service with a smile and food that came out hot and ready, a table for 5 and we could not have been more impressed with our visit. The waffle was delicious and the eggs were cooked just right. I would give it 5 stars if they had better quality bread the bread was very stale. I asked for another one. They brought another one. It was the same stale I don't know if the bread is frozen just couldn't eat it. Clearly a local favorite. Parking lot nearly full at 0830 on a holiday morning. Recommended by the front desk manager at my hotel. Food is solid, hometown Americana cooking. I liked mine. I was drawn to two dishes, so I ordered the local sausage, Walt Kamman but asked that the hash be substituted with the homemade corned beef hash that is highlighted in the Maggie's special. All of it was good, but the next time I'm here, I'll order the Maggie's special with the side of Kamman sausage. And Kudos to the cook! I was seated rt next to the kitchen, so I heard my server call out my request over the window, and the cook was like, "sure, no biggie" -- and -- he made my eggs perfectly runny, just how I like them. The hot chocolate came quickly, served politely, hot, nothing out of the ordinary. But it would hv bn nice if they'd come by to ask if I would like a refill. But the place was hopping, the gentleman who brought me my cocoa was also bussing tables, and besides, my attentive server, Jonathan, brought me a cool glass of water just as I was about to ask for some. But what nearly had me give this place 5 stars rt off the bat, something I generally do not do (need evidence of consistent excellence, etc) is the conversations between staff. Jonathan and a lady working the other side of the restaurant were concerned about a couple of regulars they hadn't seen in awhile, Mom and son was one mention and then a couple, and they were checking in with the other shifts just to make sure. This is what community is all about. It's not a fancy place, but it's familiar and welcoming in a nonpretentious way. It is clean and efficient and obviously caring. The oldest of seven children, I spent much of my younger days in restaurants like Brownie's Cafe in Yuma, AZ. My mother, a restauranteur, owned four such establishments in Florida. Her children were her staff. So, today's breakfast experience was special to me. Indeed, I can't say enough good things about my breakfast because I was delighted by the similarity of Brownie's to my mother's first restaurant, Betty's Grill, and the tasty food she offered. Brownie's was decorated beautifully for the holidays. Yuma memorabilia, most interesting photos and stories, covered the walls. From the breakfast bar to the surrounding dining area, this place was a chapter out of my past. On several occasions, my breakfast companion, Max, had previously visited Brownie's. Oh, this place. SO. SO. GOOD. The entire visit, from when we first arrived until we left, was a great experience. I have a toddler that can sometimes be pretty moody, so some places (especially those that are relatively busy) are not always the easiest to visit. But this restaurant was amazing! When we arrived, we were seated so fast. Service continued to be impressively quick- I'm talking I had my meal on the table before my coffee that had been served minutes before even had time to cool down enough for me to sip on it. The entire staff was friendly. The food was delicious and even a bit less expensive than at some other comparable local restaurants that I've been to. We had breakfast (a Belgian waffle meal with eggs and bacon, and all were good but y'all- that bacon was dreamy. It wasn't any ol' run of the mill bacon, this was thick and had amazing flavor to it!). The restaurant is clean and the restrooms in there are also tidy and clean. I shared the sausage with my companions, who all wanted to try it. The 2 gentlemen had the chorizo breakfast, but they let them customize the sides. And, this was one of the few restaurants that actually got my husband's request for really crispy hash browns! The other person in my group ordered the pancake special with basted eggs. Because of an MVD mixup, I (technically, s/o drove) had to drive down to Yuma bright and early on Monday morning...after finishing up at the courthouse, we were hungry and grumpy and wanted to get breakfast somewhere local, and ended up at Brownie's. The place was hoppin' for a Monday morning, and I loved the pictures around the establishment that showed the history of the diner and Yuma. The service was friendly, bringing coffee and water quickly (and keeping the refills coming!). I got a chicken fried steak with sourdough bread and two eggs over medium. I loved the chicken fried steak and the gravy, but unfortunately they made the eggs over easy (still good, but why ask me how I want my eggs if you're not going to do what I ask?), the sourdough toast was pre-buttered and overly so (which made it a little soggy; I would ask for it on the side next time), and the hashbrowns weren't as crispy as I like. Brownie's Café was founded in 1946, the same year my beloved Fifth Wheel Food (San Leandro, CA) opened its doors to the public. My nostalgia soared sky-high, and I faultily expected that Brownie's would have similarly good food. They didn't. I ordered a vegetable omelet with bacon and a cup of coffee. My coffee cup had a deeply embedded lipstick stain on it. Charming, but come on, man. The coffee wasn't good either -- it was tasteless bean water. Much to my dismay, the omelet and hash-browns were both dry as can be. This supports my theory about the age demographics of Brownie's patronage. Don't get me wrong! My life's purpose is to grow nice and old and visit breakfast diners daily. However, it must be said: At that point, it won't matter what the flavor or texture of the food is, for my ability to detect either will have lessened over the years. Until that day, I have tried Brownie's, and I've detected no love in their breakfast creations. My expectations flew too close to the Sun, and we won't be back (for a few decades). read more

This place gets busy on the weekends but we've never had a problem being a party of two and don't mind sitting at the bar. Whatever you order GET A BISCUIT WITH IT! They are phenomenal! Fresh and fluffy! When I am splurging I get the chicken fried steak with gravy or the corned beef hash. Super good! The hash browns are thick and yummy! And just like the biscuits most other things seem to be homemade, which separates this breakfast joint from your typical greasy spoon BUT it still has that diner feel.
