About a 1.5: I now know the reason why my family never returned to Brown's, as what I remember trying out when I was a child is not what it was remotely tasting like when I had it recently. Brown's Chicken was a huge part of my childhood. I drove from the Edgewater area to Skokie just to eat all the delicious things I loved from this place. I ordered the 6 piece chicken combo, 1/2 pound of battered gizzards, and had corn fritters and fries as my sides. The food came out and looked absolutely delicious. I love the fact that it wasn't greasy and fried to a nice golden brown. Everything tasted super delicious and I'm one happy lady! Please don't close this spot! This the third time I arrive at this Brown's Chicken and the establishment is closed before their closing hours. Their hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. I've arrived between 9:00p.m. to 9:10 p.m. I also call one time at 9:00 p.m. and they didn't answer the phone. I have been coming to this restaurant for many years but had not been here for about eight months and this had not happened. I'm very upset as a customer you should not be inconvenience to drive all the way to a a restaurant and find it close and unable to contact them before their closing hours. This past weekend we received a catering order from the Hoffman Estates location and it was not exactly what we ordered. We ordered the Deluxe Party Pack and it shows that you get Italian Sausage pieces, but the website shows full-size links. Well we received sausage nuggets that we burnt. I would not even feed them to my dog they looked that bad. Also, they were delivered in a plastic clam shell container and did not have the marinara sauce we ordered. Apparently, the sausage pieces included in the party pack are supposed to be 3" in length, NOT full size links! The photo on the website shows the full size links. There were some other issues with the order, i.e. missing sauce and peppers, raw, not steamed carrots. I tried to contact the store manager/owner to address these issues shortly after delivery but it basically fell on deaf ears. I contacted the main catering number and spoke to Maria who apologized for the lack of communication and the errors with the delivery. She contacted the store owner to ensure they were aware of the complaint. The end result was a $30 credit back to my credit card!! Are you kidding me?? We will never use Brown's for catering again due to the lack of accountability for the errors. read more

I love chicken liver. I try not to eat it all the time. That said, I was in the area and it's been a while. I went to the Skokie Browns. Check # 2049. I ordered one pound of chicken liver. The supervisor Mike took my order. He repeated back "one pound" $12. I got my order, went to my car to indulge. They gave me a pound of gizzards. Yuck!! I took them back inside and just left them on The counter. I'm looking to place an order during the summer for family and friends. If they mess up a simple order like this how well can they if it's a large order of 50-100 people? I called back and supposedly they'll credit me. We will see. read more

The food is usually good here. We always get gizzards along with our chicken. The indoor temps are always a bit cool & no ambiance, but this is fast food. A bit pricey but overall, no issues here. Many people just carryout here. read more

After driving by this location several times we decided to give it a try one night. We decided to do takeout and to no loss- the interior of the place is kind of weird. The man behind the counter was pleasant and the food was pretty good for the most part. Although my partner ordered the broccoli with cheese and she mentioned that there was unfortunately a significant amount of water in the bottom of the container. I had a hankering for a fried chicken lunch today and this old friend, Brown's Chicken, nicely filled the bill.  I've passed this location zillions of times, but the stars aligned today for a carryout visit.  I probably haven't had Brown's in over a decade, since numerous visits to the Naperville location, but their fried chicken is just as good as ever.  Tasty and moist, and with nice and crispy skin, and not overly greasy.  Their lunch is a great value, but don't forget to look prior to visiting for any online promotions which make it even greater.  Today it was a 3 piece meal including a side and biscuit for $7.99 regular but $5.99 when mentioning the online promotion.  I evidently picked a premium side (that's 40 cents more) for onion rings, so, the total was $6.39 pre-tax.  And it was a very generous serving of great tasting onion rings and three large chicken pieces to boot.  This is a nice, well maintained, and prominent corner location, and I can see why they've stayed in business all these years.  Hopefully, I'll revisit again sooner rather than later. read more

Brown's is still, over 40 years from when I first discovered it, hands down, the best place for fried mushrooms. They're crispy, flavorful, and just the right size to pop in my mouth. I recently discovered their butterfly shrimp, which you can purchase as part of a meal, or a la carte. When I pair these with a small order of mushrooms, it's the perfect meal. The chicken is always good, too, and is what has kept them in business all these years, but to me it's the mushrooms and shrimp that set them apart from the other chicken places. read more

I wasn't impressed with either place that I had chicken After all the hype about how great Browns Chicken is I found that the chicken is bland and was also very greasy. I really enjoyed the mashed potatoes and the gravy though. The fried mushrooms were pretty good too. It was kind of late around 7:30 or 7:45 pm. Decent fried chicken at very reasonable prices. Over the years they have expanded their menu to include Chicago-style hot dogs, polishes, Italian beef, etc. They have huge chicken sandwiches! Also regular sides and premium sides. Lots of choices. What they are lacking is salad. (green salads with lettuce.) Even a Caesar salad or regular garden salad would offset all of the fried and fattening foods. Oh well... My daughter loves their pasta bowls. (Fettuccini alfredo with Italian sausage. Yum!) I like their cole slaw and corn fritters...and their french fries are great when I go off my clean eating once every few months. ;-) Good mashed potatoes, too. I paid $5.99 for the popcorn shrimp and it was not that it was five pieces of small to medium butterfly shrimp fried and I also paid $0.75 a piece for boneless chicken wings, those little pieces of chicken didn't even fill up the bottom of the small cardboard tray that they were in. Disappointed with the quality of the chicken because it was too greasy, so the breaded coating was detached from the breasts, the drumsticks, and the thighs. The wings were over dry and over-cooked. The fries were not fresh. Perhaps we'll try Brown's again when we can drive over to pick it up ourselves. Ordering our dinners via the oftentimes "TOO-SLOW GRUBHUB" likely contributed to the low quality of our meals. Dinner from Brown's was once a treat. I must admit. I had a blind loyalty to this other fried chicken chain. I used to live down the street here and must have passed it a million times without giving it much thought although there was always a faint voice in my head urging me to try it because fried chicken is my jammity jam. We frantically looked for coupons online (there's always some posted to their website so make sure to check beforehand) because my dude wanted a lot of food. Luckily, when we got there, they had an 8-piece leg and thigh special for $8.99. We also used one of the online coupons for 2 large sides (mashed potatoes w/ gravy and red beans & rice) for $2.99 each. The total came out to around $16/17. Our food was ready in less than 8 mins. My dude grabbed our order and as we were walking to the car, said, "it seems a bit light." Boy was he wrong. When we got home, we were surprised to see a mound of piping hot fried chicken, definitely more than 8 pieces. I think they gave us 11 or 12 pieces, granted the legs were very skinny. The thighs varied in size. But they tasted fresh like they haven't been sitting out all day. The sides were satisfactory. The mashed potatoes were nothing spectacular, but I liked the gravy. I dipped my chicken in it (any Chicken Joy fans out there???) and it was delish. Crispy and the batter they used wasn't too thick. We demolished all of the chicken and couldn't believe that we haven't tried Brown's sooner. Also, their red beans & rice here is nothing like that mushy kind you get from that other chicken chain. They use red kidney beans which are larger compared to regular red beans, and their version just tastes sweeter. Taste-wise I still prefer the other chicken chain's version. read more

Delicious food. You get what you paid for. It's expensive but you get what you paid for. And they were fast to prepare the order (although they weren't crowded either). Not a healthy place but plenty of food options and it's all very good. We never eat inside but there plenty of room to eat there. The food's delicious. I've wondered about this Brown's chicken. Driving passed on my way back to Chicago I would often see the parking lot semi full with cars and that would make me curious as to what is attracting so many. I've had Brown's chicken before, it's not all that. It's decent for fried chicken, but it's also very mild. I would suppose they make most of their money now on the many other items they offer and affordable combo meals. Stopped in to try some chicken the other day, I was amazed at the difference of décor here in comparison to some other locations I've seen around town. Must be because they are in Skokie, a kid could bring a candle and order a plate of spaghetti and do his own version of Lady and the tramp. Instead of lying on the floor, they'd be seated on tables and chairs far finer than what you could expect at a Burger King. So I placed my order and stood to the side thinking this would be quick since I only ordered a two piece box. I should also mention that I could see fresh chicken just lying under the heat lamps. There were only a few people ahead of me. Not even one group ordered chicken. The favorites were anything fried, like catfish, fish, fries and mushrooms. Two employees stood manning the counter; one of the two (Jason) did far more than the other. Greeting customers, serving food and putting together take out orders. A few families were there placing orders and pickups. It seemed they were locals, maybe regulars based on the smiles volleyed between them and Jason. I'm just pointing out, in case management reads this, that this kid needs a pat on the back and some recognition. The other dude took my order, "two piece box dude is all I needed, whenever you're ready", I thought. For serious, thirteen minutes later I'm walking out with my chicken. The same chicken that sat there in the heat basket thirteen minutes earlier. I don't know why I ordered their chicken, it's so bland. Perfectly crispy, but tasteless for me. There were a number of deals offered throughout the restaurant, $9.99 for any type large pizza and a list of combo meals with fries and drink for $5 dollars. I come to browns chicken every week! I have ordered literally everything on the menu! The lobby is always clean and so are the bathrooms! The staff are always smiling and always say hi and goodbye! The lobby is always taken care of. I've noticed they try not to clean while U are eating but they have to if there are crumbs everywhere! The owner is really nice and if you're a regular they may throw a free fritter in there for you time to time! The patio is so inviting! I had gone to this establishment last week and ordered a 16 pc family dinner with 3 sides. I can say the beans and okra had been cooked good. However the chicken was ok and not so special. I rather order from popeye or KFC with more selection of chicken. What browns chicken make up for mediocre chicken would be their other selections of food such as: hot dog, polish, roast beef, italian beef and other fast food items. You will not find those other items in other chicken restaraunts. They have parking and an outside patio area to sit down facing a small garden. Also the place is clean and restrooms ok. Went here for the first time today. The food was ALL fresh and the guys working the counter were incredibly nice. We got chickens tender combo, okra, mashed potatoes, and s chicken sandwich combo and they were all great. 21.00 bucks for everything and we're stuffed. Please do NOT use their online ordering. I got charged 3X for the same order. I called the store and they said they had no such order. They said I would have to contact Square (which is their payment app) that they couldn't help. I called Square and they said the merchant would have to fix it. So basically no one would help on a $120 total charge of which there isn't even an order. The store would not do anything to help fix the issue even though it is through them the error occurred.
