From the latest reviews, I can see that people are starting to realize how Bruce really is. He is one of those guys that seems to talk the good story and highly praises himself when things go well but as soon as a problem occurs with his repair or service, the real Bruce comes out. unfortunately, he is a very arrogant person. He talks himself up as being a real expert and stand up guy and will take care of you if there are any problems with your repair but when the problem does happen he tells you "there's nothing I can do". This is even after he tells you that he gives a 90 day warranty. His idea of a 90 day warranty is telling you "oh it's not working again..okay you need to go buy a new appliance...bye". I think the people that gave him good reviews were happy because he fixed their appliance and they didn't have problems after wards but if they did have a problem after wards, I think their opinion of him would change drastically when they called him about the problem again. Let's face it folks...we give good reviews when they repair our items and then we don't have to deal with it again. I am sure that if any of us have a little training and the right part, we could repair it ourselves. What really makes a good repair company or repair person is what they do when there is a problem with the repair that they did. After all, they should fix our appliances because we paid them to do the job..right? But when we have problems with the repair and we call them, that's when we find out what they are really like. Unfortunately, with Bruce, he just wants to get the money and never deal with the same appliance again even if the repair didn't work. I had him fix an appliance for about $400.00 and the part that he gave me only lasted 1 month. He gave me his speech about the 90 day warranty on the part and he will come back for free and fix it but when I called him, he told me just go buy a new appliance. I wouldn't recommend a person like this. I did not end up using Bruce Bauer but his customer service enough warrants this review. My wine fridge went kerplunk some time ago. I called up Bruce and he gave me the spiel. First, he comes to your house so that's super helpful. His base cost to come out is $60. If you choose to have him fix your item that $60 will go towards the cost for parts etc. So pretty much you can quite possibly get away with your unit fixed for only $60 which I think is reasonable. He was super friendly and gave me plenty options of times he was available that worked with my availability. I didn't end up needing to use him bc I ended up having an extended warranty for the unit itself since it was purchased with an American Express card (Go AMEX!). But you better believe I will keep Bruce in mind if it goes kerplunk again and the warranty happens to be up. read more

OFFENSIVE AND EXPENSIVE. OFFENSIVE: He honestly came to my house on a Saturday when my husband was home. He is a total dinosaur who spouted a bunch of male chauvinist pig comments to my husband like "men should wear the pants" etc. and that it didn't matter that the dishwasher didn't work as long as you had a woman to wash the dishes. At first I thought he was just joking around... he wasn't. (If odor is offensive to you, he smelled strongly of cigarettes...my kids could still smell it after he had gone.) EXPENSIVE: I have used Bruce before and thought he was ok. Not this time. He wanted $242 for an easy fix with minimal parts. Didn't even have to pull the washing machine away from the wall, done in 20ish minutes. ON THE PLUS SIDE: He showed up when he said he would and the washer now works. Beware! I have a condo in Torrance rented out to a tenant. One day my tenant told me there was a leak in the refrigerator which belongs to me. I was too busy and far away, so I looked up Bruce Bauer and he charged me $65 for the service call and told me both the filter & the filter housing need replacement & will let me know how much the parts would cost . 2 days later he told me the total cost would be $285. I looked up Amazon and the filter only cost around $25 shipped, so I bought it and it was a simple install; pull out and slide in. So far so good, no leaking. I fixed the simple problem for fraction of the cost and the other part--filter housing was not even broken which Bruce said it was bad. read more

I had a problem with my washing machine and I called Bruce. He came out the following day and he was able to fix it in a matter of a couple minutes. He's very knowledgable and efficient, but in my opinion, very expensive. He quoted me $189 for an unbeknownst to me, easy fix. He made me believe that it was labor intensive and that it would take awhile to fix the problem, but that wasn't the case. Bruce has got to be the most honest Appliance Technician you will ever meet! He is smart, has been around, seen it all, and knows alot about almost any appliance, and probably almost every brand. We have hired him twice, and most recently this week. We had a dishwasher that initially Bruce thought had a blown out computer panel. He ordered the part, and when he went to install it, noticed that there was alot more damage internally to the electronic circuitry after he opened it up. He COULD'VE charged us more $$ to replace the circuitry, but more than likely, it was the engine that was acting up, and fried the internal circuitry. Result? He advised us to buy a new dishwasher. Others might have told us they could replace the circuitry to fix the sympton, only to have the engine fry the parts again, as it was overheating. Bruce is honest, hard working, and fair. Did not charge us the second time he came out with the spare parts he was going to install, as he recommended us not replacing them, and to purchase a new dishwasher. Water was leaking from the water dispenser of my Kitchen Aid refrigerator and the ice maker was not receiving water in order to make ice. I had previously used another appliance repair company, but found them to be ridiculously overpriced. I decided that this time I would look for someone new. Thanks to my fellow Yelpers I found Bruce Bauer! I called Mr. Bauer and he quoted a price of $65 for a service charge which will be included in the total price if he is contracted to provide service. I was pleasantly surprised that he was able to come out the same day. He arrived on time, quickly assessed the problem, provided me with a quote and fixed the problem all in about 45 minutes time. I really appreciated the fact that Mr. Bauer thoroughly explained why the refrigerator was leaking as well as the steps he was going to take to repair it. I mentioned that I was looking to replace my dishwasher and possible my range top in the next few months. He gave me a quick education on products and gave me advice on which appliances to embrace and which ones to stay away from. If I ever have a repair job in the future I will most assuredly call Mr. Bauer. He is professional, friendly and quotes a fair price. read more

Modern man was born with the skills to fix things and grill meat on a BBQ. I unfortunately don't have a BBQ and can't fix things worth #@%. I can wander around Home Depot aimlessly for hours and not find what I'm looking for. I can however search yelp for people who can fix things. Seven years back, when we had lots of home equity, the wife decided to remodel the kitchen and get new appliances. Great idea at the time, but then everything "aged" together. First the oven broke. But that was no big deal, cause who bakes these days anyway. But then the fridge went out. What!!! No cold beer??? Call 911. Actually called Bruce, but calling 911 would make for a funny beer commercial. Him, "911, what's your emergency?" Me all panicky, "my beer, it's not cold anymore." Him, "calm down sir, we're sending ice" Anyways, Bruce came out when he said he would, diagnosed the problems, fixed both appliances, and have had no problems since then. Bruce is great. We had a dryer stop producing hot air. He told us it could be a few things and replaced a couple parts. Parts and labor were $300 plus, which was fair based on the research I did. Told us to call him again if we had more problems. Sure enough, problem reoccurred in a week. He came back, said he thinks it's a bigger issue that's not worth fixing cost-wise and refunded our money (less the $70 or so check-out fee). My opinion is that was super fair and very telling that he was willing to refund money since the dryer wasn't fixable. I will use Bruce again and recommend him to family / friends! Found Bruce here on Yelp. He came to my place on a Saturday to fix my refrigerator that wasn't cooling. Very competent, professional and efficient. Based on the fixed price quoted, I calculated the rate I paid as more than $125 per hour. I have no idea how this compares to others, but it was a Saturday and he came with less than 2 hours' notice, so I'm OK overall. read more

My wife and I started experiencing issues with our refrigerator where it wasn't staying cold even though the freezer was working. Yelp led us to Bruce and so I called him on a Saturday night and left a message. He returned my call on Sunday and set up an appointment on Tuesday evening around 5. He charges $65 for the initial visit, which is included in the repair costs if you have him service your appliance. He arrived on time and came inside and went to the fridge. He inspected it, explained what he was doing and what the problem was and confirmed it by removing the inside back panel of the freezer to confirm that the heating unit for the coils that circulates cold air between the freezer and fridge was dead. He said that it would be $369 to replace three parts: the thermostat, the heater, and something else, which he said should all be replaced at the same time since it is likely that one of the other two would potentially go bad and you wouldn't know which one it is. He said it is unlikely that I'd have to replace these pieces again. It seemed pricey, but we wanted our fridge working again and I guess it is a nice older fridge since it doesn't have a computer built in and it's a good model of GE. Bruce ordered the parts the next day and had them overnighted so that he could come in on Thursday and do the repair. He called when he was on his way and got the job done pretty quick. He also removed some ice buildup we were having and cleaned the drain for the freezer. Everything seems to be working alright so far, but he has a 90 day warranty on parts and service, so hopefully we're good for several more years. I will update if I have any problems. Summary: Quick response, friendly service, reasonable prices (though not as cheap as I would have hoped for. Hard to know how it compares without getting other quotes). Fridge is working again. Bruce is really nice and informative. Explained what he did before he did it and why it needed to be done. I'd recommend him to others. Cash or check only. $65 for initial service visit which is included in repair costs if you have him do the repair. 50% down payment expected prior to part ordering and repairs. read more

He came over within 30 minutes, diagnosed the problem and came back on Monday with a new pump and installed it. His service fee of $65 was incredibly reasonable and was applied to the balance (total price $269). Oh, and before he left he fixed my jammed door on the dishwasher - gratis ! I have a swimming pool at my condo, but my kitchen floor was beginning to resemble one when when I found Mr. Bauer through Yelp. He arrived sooner than I could have expected and fixed the refrigerator problem causing the flood, all the while patiently explaining what he was doing and why to me and to my inquisitive partner. Months later, when the fridge seemed not to be cooling properly, he asked me two or three questions over the phone, told me the likely cause and gave clear suggestions for me to adjust the fridge's settings till he could get parts (in just a day or two). As before, he arrived sooner than I expected and explained to us what he was doing and why. While he did all the work, he made us feel like partners in the repair. Mr Bauer determines what the problem is and provides a solution to that problem. You're not paying for his time; you're paying for the solution. He is a navy veteran and a native New Yorker. He sets high standards for himself and works to those standards. He doesn't offer bargain-basement rates, but those of us who put value above cost are not disappointed. In complaints by some reviewers, I hear echoes of some of my own clients before I retired (those who make me happy I have retired). I'm prompted to respond that if one wants someone with the skill, experience and industry to fix most any appliance, Bruce Power is their man; but if one wants someone to fix them as well as their appliance, maybe Yelp can help them locate a psychoanalyst or pastoral counselor. read more

I have used him twice. The first one he came and fixed my washing machine. My (adult) daughter was home and said he did fine. The second time was my dishwasher. He came out, charged me $189, and before he left made some comment about "be sure to tell your daughter I'm sorry I missed her" or something along those lines. Odd, but, whatever. Dishwasher worked fine for a week. The same problem recurred and when I called him, he would not give me a straight answer. "It might be this, it might be that, I really can't be sure." I even asked him if it was a good idea to buy a new dishwasher (this one is at least 13 years old) and he wouldn't give me a recommendation there, either! He did NOT offer to come back and look at the appliance, he said he would look up some part prices of what he thinks it might be and get back to me. That was a month ago. We are victims to our appliances, but Bruce can help. My Maytag Neptune clothes washer was leaking water from underneath, so I searched for Maytag repair. I found two recommended repairman that did not service my area and others with negative reviews about being overpriced, lacking repair knowledge, or being undependable - I did not want to roll the dice with those. That is when I stumbled upon Bruce and I am glad that I did. Bruce answered my call and scheduled to come the same day. He explained that he has a $65 service charge that is waived if we choose to repair with him. Since Bruce is an "appliance" technician, I took advantage of his visit and also had him take a look at my old O'Keefe & Merritt wall oven that would heat intermittently. This was included in the stated service charge. Within 15 minutes after his arrival, Bruce had identified the leak with the Maytag Neptune washer and also confirmed that the ignition in the oven was going out. He had the oven part, but needed to order the replacement part for the Neptune washer, which he said should arrive in 24 hours. He offered to repair the oven now, or I could opt to fix them both at the same time. Bruce provided a flat rate quote and asked for 50% upfront and the remaining 50% when repairs are complete. Obviously, you worry about paying anything BEFORE the work is completed - but Bruce has proven to be a trustworthy man. Bruce was true to his word and called 24 hours later when the washer part arrived. He showed up the same day and had both the washer and oven fixed and working in an hour and a half. Bruce is a true professional with a great personality and knows what he is doing. If interested, he has led an exciting life and can share great stories when asked. When our fridge was finally dead, he didn't try to "fix it", he told us straight out we needed a new one and what brands to stay away. So it's good news and bad news when it comes to Bruce: First the good news: I had a kitchen range/oven combo in a rental property that had a gas leak. Bruce came out the very next day and was quickly able to track down the source of the leak--a loose fitting. Easy-peazy fix. 25 minutes total and one wrench. The bad news: His pricing is way too high. He quoted the $69 trip charge others have referred to with the standard "I'll apply that to the repair". I was fine with that. He didn't call to get the OK to turn the wrench. After he finished the repair he said his "standard labor charge" would apply and that is $189. So apparently you will pay at least $189 for him to do anything but show up and diagnose the issue, no matter how little effort is involved. Mind you, that labor charge involved nothing more than finding the loose fitting and tightening it. Follow-up: I called him back to have him explain why the $69 trip charge wouldn't cover the whole repair. After some back-and -forth, we settled on $140 for the total charge. read more

Woke up to a warm refrigerator. I usually use Sears for my washer and dryer repairs so I logged on to schedule a repairman to come out and look at the fridge. The earliest date was in two weeks. Really? So I went online and found Bruce Bauer who is located in my neighborhood. What a great find! Bruce was there in two hours! Unfortunately, the refrigerator is completely shot but I was impressed with Bruce's honesty and advice in helping to give me some great information to use when I go out shopping for a new fridge later. I had a horrible experience. The worst. I think Bruce is a awful person. I have lived through full remodels, dealing with many workers, and not once has anyone ever been as unpleasant as Bruce has been to me. I was shocked as I called him based on all the great reviews I read here on Yelp. I recently moved in to a new home. The front panel of the oven door is missing. Bruce came out to look at it. He called a few days later and quoted me $565 for repair. My kids were loud in the background and I couldn't really hear much of the conversation. So I emailed him later that night asking him to provide the breakdown of the cost (ie: parts vs. labor) for me. The quote he gave me seemed high considering that I could buy the oven new for $1,100. Also, I had already researched the cost of the parts from various parts distributors. There was a major disconnect in what he was telling me versus what I calculated. No biggie, I'm not the expert, but I needed to understand where the cost is coming from before I wrote a check. The next day Bruce called me and said he was confused about my email and why I was asking for the info. I was shocked at how irritated he was with me for questioning how it came to $565. He said he was irritated because he already gave me the information and he didn't understand why I had to ask again. I explained to him that I should not have even picked up the phone, it was bad timing, but I did pick it up because it was him. I explained that I barely heard what he said during that phone call because my sick 2-yr old was screaming. I told him it was a rough week, my kid was sick, I just got back from vacation, and I had workers in my house every day. I explained that we want to do the work, but my husband wants to know the cost breakdown. A normal person would have said no problem and provide the information again. But Bruce did not. He was an absolute ass. In the crappiest most annoyed and rude tone, he told me to just have my husband call him. I said no, and asked him to provide the info to me directly per request of my husband. He never gave me direct answers. He was very vague and extremely rude. We hung up. I am still in shock to this day at how rude he was to me. I didn't do anything to deserve that. And besides, if I am the paying customer, I have a right to ask about the cost. So here is how it ends. I was right. My quote from Bruce was inflated. I called a different appliance repair company and they quoted me $250 LESS than Bruce for the EXACT same thing! $250 LESS!!! They had no problem getting the parts (Bruce led me to believe that it was difficult to track down the parts). This is why Bruce is such a jerk... He knew I was anxious to get the job done before Thanksgiving. He took advantage of that and tried to get more money out of me. He is the kind of guy that does not have any respect for the house wife / stay at home mom. It was blatantly obvious. read more

Bruce was able to come out the same day, within 4 hours of me contacting him. He looked at my fridge and was able to give me recommendations on what a repair would cost and if it was worth my time and money to do so, he suggested replacing my fridge instead of spending money on a repair. He was also helpful in giving out recommendations on what brand, Whirlpool, to buy next. I could only hope to find repairman like this (honest, straightforward, on-time, and friendly) for my non-appliance needs. I will be using him for all of my future appliance repairs. read more

Found Bruce on Yelp this morning. Wasn't sure about the mixed reviews, but decided to give him a call. We played some phone tag, but we finally connected by mid afternoon. He was very honest on the phone and was at my house at the time promised. He determined the problem with my dryer, explained the cost, fixed the problem and even switched the door (the way it opens) for me! Bruce Bauer brings his years of experience and generally gracious attitude with him on his service calls. I am saying this because of how an ungracious reviewer slammed Mr. Bauer because of his "attitude". I heard Bruce saying "trust my judgement" and, "if it don't work, I'll keep on the job until it does" - that is what he told me. Of course, I agreed, and what Mr. Bauer did resolved the problem with my refrigerator. Another (unnamed) appliance company did NOT fix the problem, but did misdiagnose the problem, and also did not return promptly to fix the problem that their service tech misdiagnosed (ice-maker broken was INCORRECT). Bruce did a great job repairing our Kitchen-aid dishwasher. Called him in the morning and he came by in the afternoon and resolved our problem by cleaning accumulated junk out of the pump suction area. So much for incomplete rinsing of dishes! We will now rinse much more thoroughly; the automatic clean-out system in our five year old dishwasher didn't get the job done. So I got a call from my tenant, who is a total sweetheart and never complains about anything, that there was ice building up in the refridgerator in her house. Knowing it had to be serious for her to call me I drove down to LA to take care of it for her. I called another local appliance repair place and they couldn't be out for a few days to take care of it. I checked out Yelp and stumbled on Bruce, who I called at 3:30 and he was there at 4:00. He found the problem right away, a plugged drainage hose, and cleared up the problem right away. He charged me $149 for the repair. Wish he took credit/debit cards for convenience, but it wasn't too big of a problem. He not only fixed the problem, but was a genuinely nice guy. We talked the whole time he was there about all kinds of random stuff which really was nice. I actually prefer hiring someone who is a "human being" to do work and not someone who shows up like a robot. Anyway, good work and good service! I will use him again if I ever need it. read more
