On the MMA side of the gym: Rob's MMA striking class is great and he will make you get comfortable in your opposite stance. Henry's submission grappling class is ridiculously fun and he is amazing at helping you jump into something that feels so completely foreign if you're new. Darren could not be more passionate about boxing and is so good about teaching you both the outer AND the inner game of boxing. In the kickboxing class Jon is all about proper technique so he will help you undo all the poor form you didn't even realize you were doing. Matt is a pro Muay Thai fighter who is approachable and a wealth of knowledge. In Jon's MMA striking class you get awesome instruction while doing really fun exercises and he will whip you into shape but with a sense of humor the whole time. On the BoxFit side: Mariel and Lilia lead super creative HIIT circuit classes that will make you sore for days. Mandy is a lovely badass and by the end of one of her intense classes you will be surrounded by a pool of your own sweat. Eric is hilarious and will push you to push yourself! If you spend any time here you'll quickly get a sense that Eric and Mandy work hard to make this feel like a community where everybody is welcome. They do this in terms of offering classes at really affordable prices, but more than that through the way they authentically interact with everyone who walks in the door. I was pretty intimidated about walking into a gym like this for the first time but it feels like an ego-free zone where you get the opportunity to learn new things alongside friendly people. It doesn't hurt that Chris at the front desk is incredibly welcoming and there's usually a sweet lab named Rio waiting to greet you. For first timers: -First class is free! It's a great community here, very well known, the type of business to sponsor a local sports team not out of a potential form of advertising, but with a love for the community. When you walk in on your first day, they're very welcoming and open hearted, and also the deeper you dive into the community, the better it gets. I've realistically had one of the more unique experiences at Centerpoint being older then most, but the thing is, no matter who you are, they'll always treat you the same. This also goes for any accommodations. About some of classes (And what happens there): (Ages may vary) Ages 5 and under - Excellent kids: This class teaches kids to be their best self, and helps them be quite healthy and even such a young age Ages 5-16 - Kids karate: This is definitely one of the more popular programs, while at first only teaching the fundamentals of Karate, classes get more difficult and a slow and do-able rate. Teaches kids good morals and keeps them fit. Requirements may vary - Sparring: Teaches students (who have a bit of experience), how to fight in some more realistic scenario. This is done with pads on to insure that people don't get hurt, and is good if you're trying to break a sweat. (For info on other classes, check their website, they probably have much better descriptions then I do) Overall, I've been going here since December 2018, and I'd totally recommend it if you're looking for not just somewhere to workout, but somewhere to learn and enjoy yourself.

Since then, I hadn't taken any classes until a friend told me about Centerpoint. In the classes that I have taken in the past, it has always been kickboxing in the air. However, at Centerpoint, they have stationary punching bags to punch and kick, which added a unique, but tough experience. The space is nicely laid out with cubbies to keep your stuff in, and then a padded floor area to do the kickboxing. The instructor made it a point to introduce herself to me, and she was a phenomenal instructor. If you get the chance to take a class with Esther, I would strongly suggest it, as she was supportive, but also kept the class challenging and fun. Throughout class, there was plenty of opportunity for cardio with a warm-up, a punching rotation, a kicking rotation, a section for upper body and abs, and then a cool down. The 45 minute class went by quickly, but boy, did I sweat! At Centerpoint, your first class is free, so it's definitely worth giving it a shot. After that, they have unlimited monthly memberships for $150 a month, or you can by 10 classes for $100. Their drop-in fee is $17. I definitely plan on coming here more to mix up my workout routine!

Kyoshi Andy Campbell is the child whisper!! There is not one obstacle he won't help a child over come... be it physical, behavioral, you name it. My daughter started as a green belt in Kenpo, starting at a new school, with a new style, THE STYLE Shotokan. Though she never wore DragonFire's white belt, she had to learn every form in order from the start. She quickly made it to earn her own Shotokan Green Belt! Today she is a second degree black belt at his school. She is a senior in high school and teaches the little samurai's and gives private lessons. Because of DragonFire she has had the opportunity to travel around the country competing with the best martial artists in the world. Kyoshi Andy is the most patient, gracious man. He will teach your children respect, self confidence, values, and morals. He will show your child that hard work AND having fun do go hand in hand. Kyoshi Andy is a long standing world champion himself. Holding so many titles, rings, and belts I couldn't give you a number. He puts 100% of his heart into his school, students, and method of teaching. Most importantly, he treats every child as if they were his own. If you are looking into martial arts, look no further. He offers classes of all ages, all levels. He has tuition packages for families!! There is no tuition contract with DragonFire, which is unheard of. Kyoshi runs off the honor system. In my case it's all the above, and realistically without an accountability/anchor for this type of work, it's difficult to maintain the consistency to get results entirely on one's own. Staff are top quality people, fun to work with, and small groups make an hour of hard work as fun as working out can be. I know it's working due to performance on the field - quicker turns, surer stops, semi-chronically-injured areas like impinged shoulders getting stronger and have wider pain free range, and an annoying unneeded 10 lbs leaving my body. In my opinion everyone who can ... should ... do this kind of training whether they are athletic or not, and Shelby Trained is, now that I'm familiar with the entire program, an obvious place to do it.

I moved to Maine a few months ago and I am lucky enough to live very close to Maine Hatha Yoga. I'm…read morenot sure when they changed their name from Maine Bikram Yoga to Maine Hatha Yoga, but I love that they are no longer affiliated with the Bikram name. I'm not really into supporting Bikram Choudhury and the profits he makes off of 26 yoga poses (go ahead and google him). I've taken the Classic Hot 26 class with Michael and Angela, Fusion Yoga with Kristen, and Yin Yoga with Robin. I have enjoyed every class so far. For the classic hot 26, I love that the teachers I have had so far have emphasized different postures and have their own ways of teaching. This keeps it a little more interesting. I used to get so bored and annoyed with the "normal" Bikram script at other studios. I LOVE the Fusion yoga class because it is a different type of challenge and it mixes things up. Also, the music is great. While I was a little overwhelmed that this yoga studio is actually HOT, I've come to really appreciate it over the last month or so. They seem to keep the temperature very stable, which didn't always happen at other studios I've been to. Another thing that is different about this studio is that they don't spend a lot of time correcting people and complementing students during the classic classes. I've found that I now pay more attention to my postures and try to make the corrections myself. Of course, the teachers do make it a point to correct you and you are way out of alignment or you are doing something unsafe. I also appreciate the setup of the studio. I know this might sound like a tiny detail, but I really like how they can adjust the lights at different points during the classes. The first studio I ever went to would turn off the lights completely after the standing series and then I would fall asleep for a few minutes...which isn't ideal in the middle of a work out. Everyone is friendly and I haven't encountered anyone who has the elitist attitude of "oooh I practice yoga so I'm better than you" personality yet. Maybe that was just a vibe I got when I lived in the DC area? Just a little advice for anyone who has never done hot yoga, even if you feel like you are dying...just stay in the room. It makes a huge difference. Each time it gets a little easier!
