We were lucky to get a table at this popular restaurant. It was full of happy customers enjoying the Norwegian specialities for the holiday season. We even saw several patrons wearing Santa Claus hats. We ordered halibut and were impressed with the generous helping complimented with broccolini, peas, capers and new potatoes. Loved our time here! We walked in and managed to snag a seat for two, but would highly recommend booking a reservation as they were packed and had begun turning away people after we were seated. We got the reindeer filet, dried cod, and the trifle (for dessert). The reindeer was great, but a bit too gamey for my personal taste (totally personal though!). The cod was PERFECT. The wolffish is beyond expectation, it's steamed first and pan fried a little later, so it gives both crispy texture and juicy and fresh taste. A cozy place to stay in too, I like the paintings of the view of fjords as well as the Bergen city on the wall. This restaurant is a must-do when visiting Bergen. Established in 1910, the interior is rich with history and the upstairs lined with windows for an amazing view. Stopping for lunch, we had fish stew with mussels and an open-face shrimp sandwich on sourdough bread. Caramel flan for dessert and coffee warmed us for our day in the chilly rain. The food here was definitely a five star review, but unfortunately we came in at the end of dinner service which led to some confusion in the kitchen. We had our first Bergen fish stew here- and all we can say is wow. Since it was our first we can't speak to it's comparison to others, but I think it wet the bar really high for all other fish stew. We also ordered the garlic break which was served on fresh made bread and was delicious. Next was the mussel appetizer and I can honestly say these were some of the best mussels I have ever eaten. So fresh and served in a delicious butter/wine sauce that I couldn't get enough of, so I grabbed my soup spoon once the mussels were gone (have I mentioned the garlic bread yet - because it was perfect fir dipping in the mussels sauce). Dinner service was super slow due to overbooking. However... the staff was very friendly and worked very hard. For approx. $50, you get the double serving of lutefisk. Before I arrived, I asked my Norwegian connection as to what I should get. He said lutefisk. I was not aware of that it's a seasonal item and many places did not serve it until later in the year. I was lucky then this place did. They gave you so much of it that all you ever want to do afterwards is to crawl to bed. It was fermented fish in lye. It reminds me of hakarl (aka fermented shark meat) in iceland, and your garden variety of salted fish in southern China. It is a required taste and I absolutely LOVED IT. Not that I had any real comparison, but this seemingly endless lutefisk festival makes me so happy that all I ever wanted to do is to eat this, non stop. The waitstaff was delighted that I liked it, that he insisted on giving me the fish butt of the fish, which is the second part of the two part lutefisk eating event. I felt like a tribal chief who was given the best delicacy only because I was the chief. Though it's a bit silly when you think about it, the fish's other side is fishier and even ore fermented. I wonder why. Whale capriccio is on the menu. It's not for everyone. I liked it just fine. The draft beer was quite delicious and it's Hansa, a local brew from Bergen. Of course it's good. I had two of those guys as it took over an hour for the food to arrive. Waitstaff proudly told me they would be serving sheep's head soon. I whipped out my iPhone and showed him me devouring a smoked sheep head in Iceland. He then showed me his photo of their sheep head, not as smoked, and will be ready in a couple of days. However, if I insisted, he said, they can get me the dish by the next day. We bonded. He and I, over sheep head and lutefisk. I don't think you can fault the guy for a slow kitchen service. I liked my food very much. And that free Hansa he poured as he started to feel bad about me waiting for the food. I did not crawl to bed after. I went for a stroll in the dark to let lutefisk settle. My family ate here for dinner and everything was delicious and we finished everything! We came around 10 at night so there were only a few other customers and the staff started eating as well. I had the chicken salad with mango and curry sauce and it was good! The chicken was super tender and the mango was fresh and sweet. I thought the curry dressing would taste funny with the mango but it worked well together. The complimentary bread had a texture similar to pound cake and it was tasty as well. I had some of my mom's salmon, my dad's steak, and my sister's veggie lasagna and loved everything! I would recommend the lasagna if you're craving some comfort food. The salmon and steak came with potatoes and I would recommend the cheesy potatoes. The fried potatoes were good as well but I liked the cheesy ones the best! The salmon and steak weren't the best I've had but they were decent. Prices were expensive but due to the conversion rate being confusing and everything being super expensive in Norway, it didn't really shock me. My salad was around $30 and it was the cheapest thing we ordered. It was around $150 for all four dishes including tip. read more

We stopped by for dinner after a long day of traveling, including a train that was very late. The location is great although views from second floor were limited. The food was amazing, service was great and restaurant was clean and comfortable. We started with the fish soup which was very flavorful and full of goodness, with fish dumplings being the highlight. I had the wolf fish which was prepared just right with tasty veggies in a sauce similar to fish soup but different enough. My girlfriend had the reindeer (sorry Rudolph) which was very good once you get past the concept of eating something that may put you on Santa naughty list. We had the local beer which was light with a good bready finish. I would definitely recommend this place for food. We stopped for lunch at this upstairs restaurant and we're struck by the ambiance and general mood of this place. The menu offered selection for everyone in our party. Our local contact had told us that Bergeners don't eat fish though that is largely what is on this menu- perfect for tourism. I ate the hamburger which was a cultural experience in and of itself because the bun was made from fine bread and the burger patty had the consistency of meat loaf. The beer and wine selection is great and the wine list even had animal icons to help people choose the proper pairing for a meal. Had a Norwegian dinner at Bryggeloftet & Stuene the other night. It was a little pricey but totally worth it. To start, we decided to try the Whale Capraccio (139 NOK). It was extremely tender but had a few strings of tendons in it. It tastes a little like smoked salmon but with a stronger flavour profile. The carpaccio was complimented with a white horseradish cream sauce and some vinegared red onions. We also had the Bergen Fish Soup (115 NOK) which was rich, creamy and extremely flavorful. I would say it's the best fish soup I've ever had with lots of fish dumplings, shrimps, caramelized onions, carrots and celery to give it flavour. For mains, we had a kilogram of Steamed Mussels in White Wine Cream Sauce (250 NOK). The mussels were really meaty and had a nice fresh sea sweetness. The texture of the meat was amazing - almost fluffy with no strings. The sauce that went with it was so good I started drinking it up with a spoon. The fish comes with a good serving of fries but since there are so many mussels, I was pretty stuffed to eat more starches. We also tried the Fried Wolfish, also known as Atlantic catfish (295 NOK) with celery roots and haricot greens served with a white wine sauce. The fish had a nice firm texture and the sauce was creamy and buttery. The veggies were fresh and crispy. Finally, we had the Norwegian Dried Cod (295 NOK) cooked with potatoes, onions and garlic in a yummy tomato sauce. The cod did taste dry but the tomato sauce helped to rehydrate it a bit. The addition of kalamata olives was an brilliant addition to the dish. Bryggeloftet&Stuene is an absolute gem as clearly indicated by the number of locals eating there on a weeknight. GET THE MOULES FRITES!!! It's been 5 months since I've had it, and I still think about it. Giant pot of mussels that comes with a side of fries!? The white wine, cream... oh my... This place is a little spendier, but it's totally worth it. The portion of the moules frites is also plenty for two to share. We came here after our AirBnB host raved about the moules frites, and as high as his praise was, the moules frites lived up to it! I think it was one of the best things I had in Norway. The rest of the food was alright. Nothing too exciting, higher end dining with higher end price tags. Service was a little slow - they seemed pretty busy. Recommend getting a reservation during the summer when more people (aka. tourists like me) are in town. Although our party of three was able to get seated, we definitely felt like bottom tier diners. read more

This was one of the most fun dinners we had in Norway. We chose this place because it had reindeer, which my boyfriend wanted to try. It has a very heavy, meat-centric menu, but decent variety. After lots of consideration, I got the venison. The dishes look lovely, and come with a choice of potatoes. They are massive servings on the main, then a huge portion of potatoes as well! I tried the reindeer and found it to be good although with an unexpected sweetness. My venison was not very gamey at all, cooked well and was interestingly served with cloudberries, which added a tart contrast to my meat. My only complaint was out starter. We got an order of garlic bread, which was quite literally a piece of bread. That was a bit of a bummer, as at NOK 50 that seemed to be taking some liberties. Service wasn't particularly friendly, but professional and efficient, so no complaints there. It's decorated like a nautical pub, which was kinda charming, All in all, it's a nice place and well worth a visit, especially if you want to try some of the local specialty meats. read more

We walked in for dinner without a reservation and were seated promptly. The interior is decorated to give a very cozy feel yet intimate feel (dim lighting with candles). The service was very good and fairly quick; our waitress gave me a glass of iced tap water without my asking, which really pleased me (if you're American you know the struggle of water and European restaurants). The location is great, right next to the harbor. You can go for a nice walk after dinner and enjoy the water and beautiful houses. [FOOD] Bergen Fish Soup: This looks and (unfortunately) tastes like any chowder you can find at a restaurant. It was nice and creamy, but it didn't taste special. The bread crisps on the side were a nice addition. Steamed Filet of Halibut: The champagne sauce does a lot for the dish. It's incredibly buttery and creamy. The dish was cooked very well; the meat still had a very faint fish taste that wasn't bad at all, and it was very tender. The peas (I don't think in season) were nice and crunchy... if only they were in season. The asparagus was nice and fresh. The caviar was... I guess what it should be: fishy and salty. It was pretty good quality I think? It also comes with like 5 small potatoes that are pretty good (and filling). Solid dish. Steamed Mussels in White Wine Sauce: Prepare to do a lot of work for your food. The dish is a giant pot filled with small mussels. There are a LOT of mussels. I recommended going through the trouble of extracting the meat from the shell and dropping it to them bottom before eating. It allows the meat to soak in the really good sauce. A small downside was that pieces of shell sometimes found their way into the bites of meat. The fries smelled so amazing... but they were okay. Not bad though; make sure to ask for ketchup lest you want to enjoy all the salt in the dishes. Veiled Peasant Girls: A very interestingly named dessert. It was a little disappointing. The apple was okay, and the cream was a bit too light to do anything. I felt it was more of a chore than pleasure finishing it. It didn't taste bad though. Draft Beer: It's called Hansa, and it's a Bergen beer (I stole this info from another review oops). It's a dark beer, and it tasted pretty good. [OVERALL] All the food was good, but it wasn't enough to warrant a 5 star rating for me. The restaurant does deserve a solid 4 stars though. The bill came out to 900 NOK (~$105), which is a little on the high side. I do recommend the restaurant and wouldn't mind coming back! read more

The only thing really good about this restaurant is the location. There were 5 of us for dinner around 7pm on a Tuesday night. The people who ordered Salmon, Mussels and Reindeer filet were pretty happy with their meals even though it took almost an hour to get them. The two diners who ordered beef steaks were very unhappy. Both said their medium steaks were tough and really more rare rather than medium;one sent it back and it wasn't returned for 25 minutes. I had to edit my review as I became ill with food poisoning about 5 hours after eating dinner here. I was leaving Bergen the next morning and had to request late checkout because I couldn't be from a bathroom for 24 hours. Was able to leave in the afternoon by dehydrating myself. KIDS: If you mess with Santa's supply chain... bad things will happen to you. (I thought I'd do the HIMYM voiceover at the beginning of the review instead). It was delicious: A soft and tasty fillet accompanied by asparagus, mushrooms, red onion chutney, and "game sauce". I thought to myself: no wonder Santa is fat (given his philosophy of only rewarding good behavior, I'm sure Santa can handle my body shaming him. If not, then (*). Mmm... reindeer meat. Love it! Till, I felt something hard, and a feeling of emptiness... I realized soon, that I was missing part of my 2nd molar. Yup. Karma strikes back. Pretty quickly... I'm sure I own the flaw (years of eating dessert have surely not helped!), as the kitchen had executed flawlessly on cooking the fillet, and unlike other game meat I've had (say, venison) this was soft - not chewy. Not rare. Just right. For me. Bryggeloftet & Stuene dates back to 1910, and has been run by the same family since then. While more tourists dine in the summer months given its prime location near the harbor, I'm told that the restaurant attracts a good number of locals around the year to sample its large seafood and game menu featuring Norwegian cuisine. I started my meal with the classic (and exceptionally well executed) Bergen fish soup, Bergensk Fiskesuppe, with fish dumplings, shrimps, and vegetables, and, as I'm a carboholic, asked for a side order of (excellent) home baked bread. I must confess, I was tempted to try the whale carpaccio (flavored with horseradish) instead. But, I didn't want to eat Lester the Whale AND Rudolph the Reindeer in one meal. God only knows how many wishes in life I'd get granted after doing that... I've also realized, rather late in life, that I have an enormous 'talent' for making people around me uncomfortable - with something that appears witty or clever in my mind, but my delivery ruins it. In this particular case, I'd been reading the dessert selection in the menu carefully, for it had given me pause. Excused, perhaps, by that second glass of rosé, I mustered the courage to ask the gracious and thoughtful server, "What does 'slutt' mean in Norwegian? I see it listed under three of the desserts". (Keep in mind that most Scandinavians speak perfect and fluent English). She responded matter-of-factly: "It means ending." I shrugged my shoulder and responded "I suppose that's one way to look at it"... "Instead of any of the three slutts ("Liten frisk slutt", "Liten sterk slutt", and "Bitteliten sot slutt"), I'll take the "veiled peasant girls" ("Tilslorte bondepiker": described as a traditional dessert with apple, cream, and crumble). The poor server's smile disappeared... I know what you're thinking. I was fine with the ending. I might even call it a happy ending... But, I still feel terrible (*) when I recall the memory of the moment the server's smile disappeared - more so than at feeling the 2nd molar playing Footloose in my mouth. Still, despite the damages, (hey it's Norway, life ain't cheap here!), I'll always remember my meal at Bryggeloftet and Stuene. A visit here should be part of your Bergen experience.
