Review for cabin rental. I usually scope out hotels and such on review sites pretty thoroughly, and thought I was pretty savvy, but missed this one bad. You can stop now and just look for another place. My wife and I rented a large cabin for the weekend, but found it grossly uninhabitable. We're fine with tents and rustic, but discovered we're not okay with extreme neglect, filth and grime. We were icked-out everywhere we looked, the greasy furniture, holes in every floor surface. Toilet wobbled, possibly the source of a recurring smell. Total loss: $200. I feel very sorry for families who drive way up there and have nowhere else to go, and are forced to stay and sleep in such conditions. We simply drove home, 2 1/2 hrs. My wife's such a sport, she was happy we were giving up, so she didn't have to sleep there... Mentioned our predicament to our sever at the marina restaurant, and a manager who tried to help said they get that quite a bit. The marina rents cabins too, but were full up for the night. Local tip: upstairs of Buck's Lodge is "okay," but ground floor and all cabins are for various reasons gross, unsafe, and falling apart. read more

The owners not only made us an exceptional mea, they also took the time to orient us to the surrounding area. HORIBBLE PLACE!! My terrible experience echoes that of many others. While Bucks Lake Lodge (run from a cabin with no service) was unprofessional from the start, I never expected that after a 9 hour drive up to the lodge our cabin would be occupied by someone else. Their bogus excuse was that someone accidently walked into our "unlocked/unsupervised" cabin by mistake. The owners, both husband and wife, were less than 'normal' people who copped attitude towards us for being a bit upset at the fact that there was nowhere for our family to spend the night. They have several cabins and a hotel, all of which were fully booked. Their only solution to this dilemma was to get snippy and tell us we could leave if we wanted too. Unprofessional!! Their response to this problem was to argue with me, the customer, about their lack of professionalism and common sense. Here's a thought, lock the freaking doors on your cabins so no bums crawl in and take over. There were numerous other problems, no clean bedding was going to be supplied to us until we argued for about an hour over the issue. The cabin looked as if it had not been cleaned in several weeks, the refrigerator did not work, nasty cookware smells like rotting flesh, filthy everything, slanted floors, melting walls, broken beds (and chairs, and tables...), there were rat feces under the sink, there was no toilet paper provided to us, as the 'stranger in the cabin' used it....GROSS!! Note to the owners - if you are not fully up and running (which they are not), then you should refrain from renting cabins until your business is fully functioning. But I guess only competent people would know this!!! At the end of this stressful period, I felt cheated, and without recourse. Could it all be explained by incompetence? My advice is not to find out! Avoid this lodge and drive the extra mile to Lakeshore Resort where their staff is friendly, smart, polite, and professional. read more

Go to Haskins Bed & Breakfast across the street, it is wonderful and has no relation to this place. The owners at Bucks Lake Lodge have no interest in their customers or business. One of the best places in the area to drink and chill out. Quality has gone downhill a bit; the last time I ate at the restaurant, it was about an hour before they were able to get our food out and tables were randomly leaving. I ordered poached eggs, which was a mistake because who orders poached eggs in a place like this? The bar can get insanely packed in the evenings, with plenty of drunk people and random guys hitting on all the girls. Good selection of beer (I was ecstatic to see they had a bottled hefeweizen, when everyone else was drinkin' Bud), and the infamous tree-smacker is sickly sweet and deceptively non-alcoholicy tasting. Beware the karaoke - people can get insane. But if you can sing well, you'll get a crowd willing to cheer you on through anything. read more

I am loyal to the Lodge itself, which can't help what yahoos have bought it this time. more to follow, but first... Bucks Lake and its surrounding wilderness of majestic beauty gets as many stars as you can see at night through the towering pines. We just got back from our annual trip and I'm delighted to report that the Lake is the fullest I've seen it in almost a decade. The trout and Mackinaw are biting - yes, even our 7-year-old neighbors caught their share! So to reiterate, it's the Lake, my dears, that we come for...and those of you who've been here understand. And now for the sad truth about the Lodge and the cabins. Yes, unfortunately Ken & Dixie sold it to some yahoos from LA a couple years back (but they still own the nice store & Inn down near Haskins.) p.s. that store is still the best-stocked one on the lake. Due to baby diaper doo-doo we opted for a cabin this time around. Aside from one Memorial Day when we were caught in a snow storm and lacked proper gear, I'd never stayed in one of these death traps. We weighed the pro's & con's. Pro's: You can see the lake, flushing toilet, heater, fridge, stove. Con's: How much time do you have? I'll give you the top five: Nasty cookware smells like rotting flesh, filthy everything, slanted floors, melting walls, broken beds (and chairs, and tables...) Our neighbors had all the same issues including a missing window. All this for $165/night + tax (the big cabins) One miraculous improvement was the addition of a fire pit. This summer marks the return of the Lodge's fire permit, so we were able to sit up and shoot the shit with our cool neighbors (thank god!) and watch the sparks fly up to the stars. Next year we'll camp, for sure. In the meantime, we all pray that some veteran Bucks-lover wins the lottery, buys the lodge & cabins, fixes them all up and restores them to their Depression-era glory. Just don't do it! There are MUCH better options out there... including tent camping. The cabins are pathetic. We stayed in Silver tip and it had only 2 windows with screens and they were falling apart. One electrical outlet in the wall directly above the kitchen sink. A 3 prong plug on the microwave, but no 3 prong outlet. Cabin leans, so much so that the soap won't stay on the soap holder in the shower. There was a tip jar with a quarter in it and I was tempted to take it.... it's a dump. Go to Lakeside or the cabins at the marina or the B&B down the road. Eww read more

The first plus was we were able to sit outside on the patio with our dog. The second was when one of the owners started telling us about the menu and how things are made from scratch. We had fish tacos and prime riib. The owner offered up free chips, salsa and a cucumber chip appetizer. Everything we had was full of fresh flavor and seasoned just right, absolutely delicious.The beer is ice cold, always a plus :) Being so close to the Pacific Crest Trail we enjoyed visiting with a couple of young men from Norway that had stopped by for a free beer that is offered to the hikers. We would definitely eat here again and suggest you stop by and see what you thing, Bucks Lake is beautiful with trees, meadows and full of wildlife :) read more

Restaurant? What restaurant? We live in Quincy (30 minute drive) and we have been trying to go to Bucks Lake Lodge for a good year. Every time we call ahead to make sure they're open- we are glad we did- because they are never. open. Never mind their crazy random hours, that would be okay if they actually abided by them! Good luck trying to have a meal by the lake! You're better off taking sandwiches. read more

Oh geez!! Where do I start!! Well first off my family and I visited 14 years ago and because we had suck a great time we talked over all these years and finally made time to go.... Hmmmmm..... When we got there we were noticed the lodge it self was updated and remodeled....then was pointed to our cabin "silver tip" and what a disappointment. My heart sank immediately at the appearance of this place. Super ran down. Inside dirty.. There were only two outlets in the cabin and lamps that could not be plugged in. I'll have posted a ton of pics to show there is no exaggeration. The the only outlet closest to the room me and my husband stayed in was above the sink, so an extension cord had to be ran threw the kitchen into our room. My husband is a fireman and assured us that this cabin is not up to code and very dangerous. As a family we could have left but we travel 5 hours and all had planned vacation. We felt stuck. The cabins that are owned by other owners surrounded us and we felt we got super gypped!! I was going to sit down with the owners when I checked out to kindly tell them how disappointed we were but they don't open the lodge in tell 11:00. I left my key with the cook hoping he was telling the truth. I'm still considering calling and letting them know how it affected us. I do understand that a cabin is a cabin but when there was multiple hazards because of the lack of care is a problem for us. Although the cabin was a problem the lake was beautiful and the dears were so pretty. When we were outside on the lake or hiking we were having a blast. When we were at the cabin we were kind of miserable. They should have included meat bee traps. Sue to the meat bees it was not enjoyable to sit out side at anytime and enjoy the view. I'm going to cut myself off now because I could go on and on. So if you do decide to go to Bucks Lake Lodge do not stay in the cabins owned by them. read more

This review is for the lodge itself, and by that I'm referring to the bar and grill they call "The Lodge." Simply put, awesome food. Gotta try the nachos (chips made in-house) and fish tacos. The burger ain't bad either. Rebecca the owner and her trusty Yorkie sidekick Jill are usually hanging around, and she won't steer you wrong on food recommendations. They have a pool table and foosball table too. We spent a lot of time at the Lodge because the food was so good and the atmosphere was a lot of fun. Ok folks, this is not the Ritz! It's a cabin in the wilderness -- and WOW what a wilderness! Tall trees, unspoiled views and a family run lodge, just like those I stayed in when I was a kid. Unfortunately, the lodge which housed the restaurant, bar and gift shop had a fire -- but we understand it may be rebuilt soon - yea! We stayed there before our daughter's graduation from Feather River College. The whole family came and we had a variety of lodging, from the rustic cabins we put the kids in, to our clean, comfortable and cozy hotel room (they have a two story modern hotel for those who want a little nicer room). Great place for a reunion, or a nostalgic trip back to road trips with mom and dad. We ate a few meals there, mostly breakfast -- and had a fun time shooting pool with the kids. It's a long way from So. Cal. or we would be back more often. read more

While the family that owns/operates the lodge/cabins/hotel rooms is very nice and personable, their service skills needs major upgrades. Unfortunately, their beautifully newly built lodge (after the fire) is hardly used. No one was there the entire weekend. We ended up being the only customers at the bar on a Saturday night when Lakeshore Resort was jumping. We came from there because we stayed at the lodges' rooms. The rooms are nice for the location, I'm sure it's tough to keep up a place in the mountains. All was good, just need to be a bit more professional. read more

Too bad there isn't an option for zero stars. Went there and the restaurant and bar were empty. We were a party of 9. Nine average ordinary quiet professionals there to breathe the mountain air. The owner was so rude I can't imagine how much effort goes into being that aggressive. So the 9 of us left. Drinks, appetizers, main course and dessert. Do the math. That's a lot of money walking out the door of an empty restaurant. No wonder it's for sale. We are up there often and have several family members who live in Quincy. We will not go back. Greatly improved over the last year. The lodge itself is top notch, great food at the restaurant, and the bar is wonderful. The cabins are small but clean and well maintained. If you are from the valley and looking for a hotel experience the cabins may not be for you, get a room at the Timberline. The store is well stocked. The staff are friendly and the owners are wonderful people. The lake is gorgeous with great fishing and hiking. The snowmobiling here cant be beat. read more

I can't even rate this place. The Lodge, okay food was good,, not great. The cabins, well I kick myself for not checking Yelp before I booked our stay. We manage two out of the three nights,, but I will NEVER go back again. It was the most disgusting, dirty, run down place on the inside I have ever stayed,,, the outside leads you to believe it's a quaint rustic cabin in the woods. Floors beyond filthy carpet so stained it looked like someone died their, couch was just simply unfathomable,, bathroom sick was actually in the bedroom and had no running hot water,,, kitchen water smelled like iron, fridge yucky, stove had no racks had to ask the owner for racks to cook, he was really really put off... If you have children stay FAR FAR Away and if your staying with adults stay FAR FAR Away!!!! read more

This place was horrible. Stay far, far away. They had the nerve to charge us $20.00 extra because we only stayed one night. Even though there wasn't anyone else there. Put us in the smallest cabin which smelled like a mixture of old, greasy food and some horrible cleaning solution. I asked for extra pillows, never got them. Worst lodging ever! the place was filthy, it stunk, the floor slanted downhill, there were no screens on the windows so the place filled with flies when you open a window. The entry door would not lock, so we could not leave anything inside the cabin when we went out on the lake. The toilet was tucked back into an alcove that was maybe 18" wide. Nearly impossible to use the toilet. They charged me $360 for 2 nights. This place was not even worth half of that price! Don't stay at Bucks Lake Lodge!! read more

I'm guessing the people that gave low reviews have never stayed in these cabins before. I've been coming up here for 40 years (since I was a baby). The cabins have not changed in those 40 years, but with that being said, it was clean enough with clean towels, dishes, floor and bedding. This is NOT a five star hotel. It is somewhere to lay your head after fishing and playing on the lake all day. We love it here, it's close to the lake, hiking and it's super quiet. The new staff/owners here were not friendly like Ken and Dixie were, but whatever. The new lodge is gorgeous! But, the store had very little in it and was wayyyy expensive. We got everything we needed at Haskins. Also during the week, they don't open until 11:30 in the morning which I thought was totally bizarre considering they had guests staying in the cabins. Did not try the restaurant. My only complaint would be the very limited lodge hours and access to staff had we needed anything. We did have to write a note and leave our key in the box because no one was there to check out with. We will stay next time at the cabins owned by the Marina. But, remember the reason for the high priced cabins is the close access and convenience to the lake. read more

We were lured up there from Joshuafest at Quincy by the full-page ad this place had in the Plumas County Dining Out magazine. Not much in the ad is true! We went for breakfast and the person there seemed surprised to have any customers at all, had to take chairs down and showed us where "there might be some coffee left" in a self-serve airpot. Breakfast was sketchy at best, and although the reviews talk about the cute dog, which she is, but I'm sure there are some health rules about cute dogs wandering in kitchen where food is being prepared, and eating area. The ad also mentions the gift shop, which was a small room with mostly grocery items and some t-shirts. We had been looking forward to unique shop and delicious food, won't be back. Try the Lakeshore Resort just down the road instead - great view and homemade pizza, right on the lake. read more

What a dump. Right up against the dusty highway. The cabins are circa 1930 with no upgrades. Not one. Original refrigerator and furniture all from the 1950's. There are no lake views. The website is deceiving. It is nothing at all like their pictures. Plywood and nails are the primary form of maintenence. We paid for two nights and left after one. We would have not stayed the first except we were tired. The place is right out of a bonnie and clyde movie set. They have a two night minimum because too many folks were so disgusted they tried to cancel the second night (like we did) but are reminded of the two night minimum. Stay away. The resturant is just as bad. We waited and waited and waited 50 minutes for two crummy cheeseburgers. They don't even serve coffee before 8:30 am....at a hunting and fishing lodge !? Don't go here. We planed to stay in Bucks Lake Lodge for four night on Nov. It happened to be rain all day and nights. The ceiling started to leak after two days. The Cabin was very cold and wet even though we turned up heat to Max. The Cabin is totally out of shape. The couch is shabby. Once we sat on the couch, it was hard to get up due to it sunk down the bottom. Remember that I am only 150 lb. Two bed matresses are made of sponge which are too soft to sleep. I don't even want to mentioned about smelly shower and toilet. No housekeeping service were available for three days. We asked Rebeca,the owner, to let us to leave one day earlier. She seemed to be friendly to let us go and promised to refund that night. However, we never gotten refund. We called her three times. She promised us every time but no action. It was my one of the worst cabins where I stayed. read more

We were so looking forward to visiting Buck's Lake Lodge this year. As the owners of Buck's Lake, we have never been treated so well as ANYWHERE as you and your husband treated us. We fully enjoyed the aviance, the lush forest, our cabin how it faced the lake and other times how we enjoyed the very roomy hotel. The restaurant food especially lunch and dinner was an unforgettable experience of absolute delicious dining. That's what I look forward to, is the food! You and your husband were constantly gracious to us always finding ways to help us enjoy our vacation, for example, the kayaking where you taught me how to do, Unforgettable! Even having a great boat ride every year and lending us your boat to fish, just awesome. We look so forward to. Your workers were very helpful and respectable. I just want to thank you and your family for the summers we spent there and we hoped to see things rebuilt for our future vacations. We thoroughly enjoyed the fishing and your help in cooking that fish for us. You are truly a blessing to us and others as well. Stay FAR FAR AWAY from here....don't even know where to start...our dinner was the WORST ever....my husband and I had the Prime Rib, I ordered the end cut, which was still 'walking' across my plate, so much blood it was terrible, his was order medium and again, was still mooing!! My granddaughter ordered the Nacho's, who can mess up Nacho's? The so-called cooks at the lodge!!!! The chips were actually burnt, who does that??? The bartender needs a lesson in drinks also, rum and coke, who knew it was that hard to make?? The cabins are a joke and a half, and the "store" give me a break!!!! My wife Cathi C forgot to mention the cold clam chowder,you cant get a baked potatoe with your raw not so prim rib,just mashed potatoes. No price on the menu for the prime rib witch was 25.00 a plate,way over priced. Oh the croutons on the salad were good and the ice tea wasnt bad. If I could give less than one star, I would. I've stayed at dumps in my life, but this place takes the cake. We booked a three night stay and managed to survive two, but then bailed out. Our cabin (which we were told had been cleaned twice) was filthy. I'm no stranger to dirt and don't mind "rustic" but this place was unsanitary and disgusting. It appears that at some point in the past, the toilet had fallen through the floor as it was now being supported by a one inch piece of particle board. There was no sink in the bathroom so one can only imagine what was in the kitchen sink from prior guests. There were dead bugs on the window sills, gross and disgusting floors and furniture, mold in the bathroom, a mildewed dish towel on the sink, and spider webs all over the deck. There was a sandal under the bed...no doubt from a prior guest who beat a hasty retreat from this dive. Fortunately we brought a small portable gas grill so we opted to cook and eat outside where it was less filthy. I might have been more tolerant of all this if the place was a bargain, but at $129 per night, I at least expected clean. For a place that suffered a devastating fire a few years back, they don't seem to have any concerns for the safety of their guests. The fire extinguisher in our cabin was outdated by 3 years and there was no smoke detector. The staff at the lodge seemed confused all the time. We felt validated when the two couples in the cabin below us were overheard saying that this place took the prize for crappy places they'd ever stayed at. This was our first trip to Buck's Lake and unfortunately our lodging experience colored our whole perception of the place. On the plus column, the lake truly is beautiful and at some point, when we've managed to forget this horrible experience, maybe we'll go back and stay in a halfway decent place. Run, don't walk away from Buck's Lake Lodge! Wish someone had warned us! read more

For $160 a night and no toilet paper in bathroom when we showed up, and to openly tell us the house cleaner had a late night the night before and they were wondering what all he had missed, was not a good way to start our time at this establishment. Let's see.. In half the cabin the electricity did not work. This meant that there was no working light in the bathroom and when my wife got cold at 2-3 in the morning, she could not turn on the heater. There are no screens on the windows and because the cabin smelled like propane so much the windows needed to be opened to get fresh air in. This made it so that the mountain bugs were flying all around the one good light in the room. The full sized bed had no cute bed frame. It was a saggy bed reminiscent of being at camp as a kid. I went to go buy two cups of coffee to go and waited 20 minutes while they scrambled around and eventually delivered two cups of crappy coffee with no lids and no creamer as had already been stated I would have liked. .. For $160 I got a broken down cabin with little to no service. When I went to return my key and check out no one could be found to share my experience. So I turned in my key and will be telling everyone I know about how bad this place was. read more

The worst cabins ever. Filthy, dirty, smelly and they have not put any money into upgrading the cabins in many years. Please trust this review. I have never in my life stayed in a more disgusting place. I am not kidding when I say if I had slept outside it would have been better. The bed was falling apart, tilted at the head and only on a frame. The only thing clean in the whole cabin was the sheet (Thank God). The bathroom and floors were falling through. There was a drainage hose going from the bathroom floor outside the cabin down the hill to the other cabins below us. The entire cabin was covered with an inch think of dirt. There is NO WAY this place was cleaned before we came. It had not been cleaned in weeks from the looks of it. I wore shoes inside the whole time and washed everytime I touched anything. The dishes and pots/pans were not washed in a long time. The place crawling with spiders and the windows did not open. Even if you had gotten them open they had no screens and you could not enjoy the fresh mountain air because the front door did not have a screen on it. It also had a nasty, musty, cigarette smell inside the cabin. Poorly managed and ran place. The owners/managers were kind of dingy and not focused on their clients and the guy had no clue what he was doing when it came to checking us in a giving us a receipt. I strongly suggest the other cabin rentals maybe at Bucks Lake Marina. $30-$50 a night less and much cleaner and modernized. That God the scenery and the Lake were beautiful! We will NEVER go back to that place again. I hope they think about putting some money into upgrading and cleaning that place. Sad that we wasted that much money on it. read more
