My family and I stayed in Room 1 (Family Suite) for 3 nights. The place was very spacious, cozy with beautiful views right on the Yuba river. The staff, especially Lydia who we primarily interacted with was incredibly kind and responsive to any of our needs. It was my wife's birthday, so they surprised us with some extra decorations and accomodations to make her feel very special! At one point our vehicle wouldn't start so they reached out to their local handman to come out and take a look. Luckily, the car started after about 20-minutes of trying so we didn't need his services. However, my wife did meet him and said he was very sweet along with everyone else we met in the small town of Downieville. Can't wait to visit again! read more

I can't tell you enough how much we LOVE this place. Lydia and Natalie are more like family when we call to reserve, cancel, check in, etc. They are amazing, caring, thoughtful, hospitable as can be! If you need anything they are immediately on it, anyway they can to help you have the best stay possible. Recently I lost my little brother, tragically and unexpected. We had planned a trip here for my fiance's birthday months in advance. I didn't want to cancel since we basically cancelled every other trip and event we had planned to be with family and funeral. I decided to keep this one as I knew I could rely on them to have a pleasant stay and maybe help ease my thoughts. When we arrived we had a handwritten card and fresh flowers from Lydia, the hotel concierge. They upgraded our king suite to the family suite since it was cooler on the lower level, I was able to rest during the day. We packed the lodge with about six other couples who came to celebrate his birthday and also be there for me during these rough weeks I was having. Everyone was taken care of and treated well as I knew they would be, they all were happy with their rooms and stay which made me very happy. The hotel is rustic, comfortable and very clean. The sound of the river flowing directly in front of it is so relaxing and rejuvenating, we sleep with our windows and balcony door open to listen all night long. Beds are so comfortable that I even considered texting hotel to ask where they purchased from. I may still. Anyway, five stars for this wonderful place. I got room 10, a cute little room directly over the river. It was so cool to wake up to the sounds of the river in my warm wood paneled room. One of my favorite hotel stays by a long shot. This place was completely charming, but what put it over the top was the owners and general manager Lydia. During my stay, my truck broke down and wouldn't t start. Lydia made a phone call to the owners. They showed up five minutes later with a tool box and started searching YouTube for solutions. With their help, I was able to start my truck! My husband and I stayed at the Riverside this past weekend. We had an excellent experience. We stayed at the Riverside during the summer and we're eagerly anticipating staying there again. The view from the balcony is gorgeous and DV never disappoints with the beautiful sites. Our room was cozy and was the perfect size. It was clean and included some little snacks. I thought it would be nice to not rent an AirBNB and to stay in a little town. I was looking forward to the warmth of an inn--personal recommendations of where to eat and maybe recommendations about trails from the host. I rented a room with a kitchenette because I like to prepare simple meals for breakfast or dinner sometimes rather than eat out for three meals. I was disappointed that the kitchenette does not include any way to cook food (I brought pasta). I could have possibly figured that there was no stove or hotplate from the website, but a fridge and microwave hardly seem like a "kitchenette". I wanted to cut some broccoli to steam in the microwave. There was no knife in the kitchenette--and no cutting board. I don't mean no chef's knife. There was no butter knives either. I spread my peanut butter with a spoon. Every time I went by the lobby there was a note on the door that said "We have gone to sleep for the night" even at 4pm. So, not much warmth either. The location on the river is nice. But I wouldn't recommend a room on the bottom floor unless you are impervious to sounds. Even with the river flowing I could hear the conversations and the tv and every step of the folks upstairs. They were loud late. I've lived in apartment buildings most of my life. This was the loudest of any building I've ever been in. read more

I was up there on Wednesday night. We stayed a couple weeks back and it was wonderful in room 10. Called to try to get room 10 again was told it was unavailable. Got charged a more expensive room. The cheaper rooms were empty when we got there. Bate and switch. The room was dirty the toilet was disgusting. Hair all over the bathroom. Even spit toothpaste in the sink. We were very grossed out and unhappy with our stay this time. We came up on a Wednesday night to save money instead we spent more. We didn't appreciate that. I hope you guys learn from our experience to take care of your guests better. read more

We came with a large group of family and friends and were totally delighted with our stay! All the details were considered in this charming Inn. Cabin-like rooms were recently updated with mid century decor, gorgeous views from the balconies, perfect location right in the heart of town, easy river access, falling asleep to the sound of the river, gift bags with local cookies and a small but well equipped kitchen in the room, live music riverside on Saturday morning, support securing a spot large enough for us all to eat and meet together, supportive and generous staff, great recommendations on nearby river and lake spots... it really just doesn't get any better than this for a quaint and cozy family vacation. We're looking forward to a return visit for more hiking, river time, and exploring local ghost towns. Downieville itself is just darling. A perfect old mining town with lots of historical interest and charm. *some of the other reviews/ photos on here are pretty dated... new ownership has definitely update the place so it feels more hip and less "grandma" read more

My husband said the ambiance is 100/10. The river makes this worth the stay. Rooms are clean, decor is in keeping with the atmosphere, and I like that they do not use single use plastic products for the shower and bathroom. This is a very hands off establishment. You call and reserve your room. They leave your room key at an agreed upon location. They give you a number to call if you need anything. No contact with anyone. I am a fan. Lots of great email information was sent about Downieville and where to eat, etc. I thought I was very clear about needing two rooms with two beds each and a rollaway but I ended up with 3 King rooms and we made it work. No I did not bother to contact anyone because we were just there for 1 night and the river was the primary draw. Now here is the crunchy part. There is no coffee. None provided in the Lobby. No coffee makers in the rooms. We were lucky to find one place open in town that made coffee and breakfast sandwiches on Thursday morning. So...go hang out by the river but bring your own coffee. Oh and fuel up before you get there because there are no gas stations in Downieville. read more

This was our first stay at Riverside and we will certainly be back! We had Room 7, a king bed with a kitchenette and balcony. Loved sleeping with the door open and listening to the sounds of the river. The balcony was perfect for wine and cheese Friday night. Saturday we enjoyed walking into town for lunch, the Mexican restaurant in town is the best, vegan burrito to die for! We loved being able to walk to the River Trail hike after lunch. Sunday we walked to the old historic cemetery and Pauly Creek Falls, brunch at Sabrina's was great. Lydia was very friendly and we enjoyed our stay at Riverside a lot. Riverside and most of Downieville are friendly, which was great. read more

Everything about this place was delightful. The rooms are charmingly rustic but updated. Everything was spotlessly clean. Our rooms (#s 2 and 3) were on the lower level (good accessibility) with a big shared, shaded balcony over the river. Just charming. Room 2 has a kitchen, while 3 doesn't, so these are good for people traveling together. The hosts are very friendly and super attentive. They respond immediately by text to any question or request you might have. I definitely recommend it and will be going back. One other thing: Boomtown Lounge, right across the river, has great breakfast, snacks and beer, and is very friendly. read more

Been coming to Sierra City/Downieville since 1975 and the Riverside Lodge is the best. The rooms are clean and a bit on the rustic side, which is just the way I like it. The location is what sets the RL apart. One sits just a bit above the Downie River and listens to the beautiful sound of flowing water. The view is so verdant that one can almost fantasize that the world is not careening to its destruction. Gracious management with a particular shoutout to Sonya. I come up to relax, read, and swim in a beautiful "secret" spot on the Yuba. One warning, the town grocery store could be from a bad neighborhood in a third world country. Aside from soda and beer, they can run out of anything at any time, e.g. they were out of milk at noon on Tuesday with next delivery after 3 on Wednesday. But make no mistake, the RL is a jewel. read more

Aug 2018- new owners...very nice. Thinking we will come up here again...maybe during week and either fall or spring. Awesome place to stay. Local grocery store closes at 6pm so be aware if you don't bring food with to prepare in rooms with a kitchen. Aug 2027 So we took the scenic route up here and drove the "fun" car AKA convertible. Beautiful drive and hardly any traffic. I had made our reservations way back at Christmas so we would have accommodations for the Downieville Brewfest. It looks like the Inn is completely full which is no surprise cuz of brewfest. Our room is great (one of two rooms with kitchen) oh yea as mentioned in other reviews....there is basically no cell service here but Inn has Wi-Fi. And yes all the rooms are riverside. We left the balcony door open all night...screen door doesn't totally cover outside but I haven't noticed any bugs in room. So I need to add picture(s) of kitchen...it's like a camper kitchen kinda but I'd highly recommend these rooms with the kitchen cuz places to eat here are sparse. Kitchen has everything you need basically....except like baking dishes. We brought stuff to make enchiladas and grilled cheese sandwiches. Not spending cent on food during brewfest since breakfast was provided and we brought groceries. And well...the Inn is up for sale...not sure how long it's been for sale...and seems reasonably priced so I hope someone does buy it and Inn stays open. I'd love to buy it...it'd be work but fun to meet new people all the time.... In conclusion....yes I'd recommend this place to people....can't beat the views....the weather....stars at night are awesome. read more

The fellow at the front desk was quite helpful and friendly and knowledgeable about the community. Room was clean and fairly good sized. However, the heater was broken and the portable substitute was inadequate for the size of the room. The room could use more lighting. There is a deck off the room overlooking the Yuba River. The deck has chairs and tables and is shared with the room next door. Direct TV and internet work well but there is no cell service in this area. However, a phone is provided outside with free local calls. Continental breakfast in the office is served between 7 and 10 each morning. There is absolutely no smoking anywhere on the grounds. The Riverside Inn is a very rustic hotel. The other posts are correct in that they provide free WiFi and long distance service. The breakfast that is served is listed as an "enhanced continental breakfast". The breakfast consisted of some fresh fruit, some blueberry bread and some Sara Lee type bagels, prepackaged pastries as well as juice, coffee and tea. The owners do not reside on the property and didn't seem to us to be overly friendly. It didn't have a good B&B feel for us at all, although it is listed on several B&B websites. The rooms are as shown on the website and are very basic. The bathtub/shower in our room was not level and it felt like we were on the verge of falling out when taking a shower. They do provide bath amenities such as shampoo and lotion, which was a plus. The room didn't have a suitcase tray or a closet. There was also not a table where you could sit to eat or play cards, but they did provide some TV trays that we used. The beds are comfortable and covered in a beautiful quilt that comes with a caveat that they are not washed often so they would last longer. I'm glad I didn't have a black light to see what was left on the quilt from prior guests. If I was looking for an inexpensive motel experience, I would probably stay here again. When I'm looking for a B&B experience, I would definitely pass on the Riverside Inn. read more

This place is really great. I was up there with my furry kids ($20 for the pair) recently and we all had a nice peaceful time. Rooms 4 & 5 have a shared upper balcony with another shared balcony below (either rooms 1/2 or 2/3). The rooms do have metal screen doors with deadbolts as well as the glass doors with the deadbolt for security so if you want to leave the balcony door open, you can do so safely. The breakfast was good with all the regular suspects (coffee, tea, chocolate, bagels, etc) with fresh cut cucumbers, tomato and onion alongside the lox. What really took my breath away was the night sky. Living in San Francisco, I never get a good view of the sky and while I was up at the Riverside, I just could not stop staring at the sky. I even saw TWO shooting stars! Yeah, I know the shooting stars are not because of the inn, but it really made for an even better experience there. read more

Winter crazy storm, got to the top of Yuba pass, waited for 3 hours because of an accident ultimately CalTrans decided to "Close the road" . You are offered a great continental breakfast with lox and bagels, coffee, tea, fruit and more. Rooms are nice and beds are cozy. Each bed has 6 pillows. What other place does that for you? I've been to all the places to stay in Downieville and this is the nicest one to stay at. The others are nice and are wonderful also, but this one is the coziest place. read more

Great hospitality. Great room. Fantastic decor. I've stayed at a few of the Downieville places and this one just had a great feel to it. Stayed in a room with 2 queens, fireplace, wood walls, and of course, within walking distance to everything. Also, a nice continental bfast included. Bonus - since your cell doesn't work up here they have a free unlimited LD phone for you to use. My only complaint is that they are more motorcycle focuses than mtn biking! read more

My husband, daughter and I just spent the weekend at the Riverside Inn. This was our first time staying here and we were charmed by the whole experience. Mike and Nancy, the owners, think of everything. The rooms are clean and well appointed. There are handmade quilts on the beds, lots of pillows, and nice towels in the bath. Each room is on the river and has a balcony, or deck for the ground floor rooms, to sit and enjoy the river. There is no cell service in Downieville but the inn has free wi-fi so you have some connectivity. They also have a free long distance phone available for guests to use as needed. Also, our room had a tiny kitchen with a fridge, microwave and four burner stove. really, where can you stay and enjoy all of this for just shy of $100 per night? (This is the off season so the rooms are a bit less expensive right now.) Breakfast is yummy! Bagels with cream cheese, lox, tomato, cucumber, capers. This weekend they also had fruit, blueberry bread, tea, coffee, orange juice and hot chocolate. The owners are very friendly but not in-your-face friendly. If you feel likes visiting, they are so warm and know so much about this area. If you want quiet, they leave you be. Love this place!! Highly recommend it. read more

We stayed in Room 9 on the top floor, which had a balcony overlooking the river. It was a very cozy room. The owners have been there 14 years and are very friendly. They have a DVD collection that you can browse through and you borrow them on a trust system. I liked it! We had our 1 year old with us, and he's a very mellow baby and quiet, but were concerned from reading some other reviews online saying this isn't a kid friendly place. NOT TRUE. Not only were the owners sweet to our boy, but so were all of the passerbys! Everyone here was so friendly! Thank you! read more

We were lucky enough to find this place on accident and the owners were extremely kind to us, setting us up with a room right away. The room was super cozy and breakfast was great. We reserved 4 rooms. All were different (full beds, queen, pull out sofa) but all were clean and cute. Each room had toiletries, coffee mugs, kuerigs and cookies! The rooms upstairs had balconies overlooking the river. My kids enjoyed playing cornhole next to the river. A short, easy walk to town for food and groceries. So glad we chose Riverside. Looks to have the best views! Rocking chairs inside, chairs and table on the porch. Table and chair in our mini kitchen. We got so much more than we expected.
