This is not your dad's Bud Rip's Old 9th Ward Bar (OK that's a mouthful) and though I saw I had given it a generous 5 stars back in 2013, I feel it's much improved (and woman-owned, so of course it's much improved, heh!) Back then I was all about the OG dive bars of New Orleans and let's say while I'll always have a soft spot for these venerable institutions, my tastes are a little different. Like, now I rarely drink hard alcohol and I cannot fathom drinking cheap wine. So I was glad to see they have a decent rose and the inside is as charming as it ever was, but there's pretty sidewalk seating with flowers. And the drink prices are still shockingly reasonable! I went there a couple of weekends ago after finishing a mentorship session with my mentees. My phone died while I was there, so I couldn't access my card to pay my bill. I explained the situation to the bartender and asked if I could leave my ID and card with them while I quickly went home a few blocks away to get my charger. They agreed, so I left and came right back. When I returned, there was an older Black man in the bar who I hadn't seen before. He appeared to be homeless or struggling with substance use. Because we were both Black, staff seemed to assume we were together, which felt odd. He asked me to buy him a beer, and I agreed, just trying to be kind because I understand how difficult things can be. While I was sitting there trying to charge my phone so I could access my payment, a different bartender--a blonde woman--suddenly started yelling at me to leave, also directing the same hostility toward the man. I kept trying to explain that I just needed a few minutes to charge my phone so I could pay my tab, but she continued to berate me and told me to get out. Because of that, I wasn't able to settle my bill as I had intended. I wouldn't return to that bar again, even though it's close to my home. I'm not from here, but the experience felt deeply uncomfortable and, honestly, racially charged. read more

On a new quest to walk to some bars I haven't been to or at least don't recall visiting we checked out Bud's. A great space with friendly service, good lighting, this historic old bar has a wonderful local beer list. One thing i question based on the taste of their tap beers is how often they clean their lines because they weren't tasting quite right. So while I really loved the experience it seems like a little upkeep is needed. read more

This place is my go to in New Orleans. It is far from a dive bar, but it is an awesome bar in the neighborhood. They often have food pop-ups of all sort, and tonight was no different - a pop-up with delicious pork tamales by Crunchy Munch (pictured). We had just com from hanging out on Frenchmen Street, and wanted to stop for a night cap before heading home. The vibe was wonderful....there was a nice crowd, the DJ was pumping one danceable tube after the other, and the bartenders were doing their usual of greeting every guest at the bar warmly and serving up one delicious cocktail after the other. If you've never been, stop cheating yourself and stop in! You won't be disappointed. read more

Met up with friends to plan our summer hurricane plans and support our friends with their smashburger pop-up. Kind of dark inside, but clean and uncluttered. Extensive beer choices, though samples of the taps can be requested to narrow your choices! Bathrooms were clean and a cigarette machine is on site. We left around 9 as the evening musical act began loading in. At that point staff started to board up 2 or the 3 entrances/exits to minimize neighborhood sound pollution but even then the decibel level increased significantly. Loud venue late night. Came to Bud Rip's to kick-off a Halloween weekend bar crawl. This bar is the perfect spot kick-off a bar crawl and there's plenty of space inside and out. The staff was super friendly and the drinks were super reasonable. This is a true neighborhood gem and the regulars who make up the bar were all super cool. You can tell this bar has so many great stories and I can't imagine who all has crossed those doors. So, was down in the Bywater for the Krewe of Krampus parade and stumbled on this place. I was pretty pumped about it being right on the route and the place was packed. Not overly busy considering the crowd outside, but apparently too busy for the bartenders to keep up. Most people are ordering shots, beers, and very simple mixed drinks(vodka & soda, whiskey &coke) but the bartenders just couldn't move fast enough. I stood at the bar, money out, trying to get a drink. 20 minutes later, still no service. They weren't working the bar right at all. I'd you have four bartenders, then you should be working sections, not trying to run from one side to the other. Also seen one of them charging double shot prices and pouring single shot drinks. read more

For my 1400th review I want to highlight this great neighborhood dive bar; so before I begin let's be clear that I don't want you complaining/progressive/whiny/PC/reformer etc. carpetbaggers looking to over regulate and redefine my city reading this review and invading this space so just stop now... Yeah I'm talking to you so If you don't like go cups, 24/7 bar hours or music leave now! This is probably my favorite bar in the Bywater as its still an authentic New Orleans bar without any pretentious hipster crap like a lot of the other area bars and restaurants are transforming into. The drink prices are reasonable and haven't upsurged insanely like some of the "gentrification" businesses catering mainly to tourists that also love to rip off recent transplant locals. I'm fine with fixing things up and making them nice but not at the expense of losing our local culture along with having to pay insanely inflated prices. Tip: Quick equation to determine if you're paying fair price. When one beer costs nearly as much as an entire six pack of that beer that's insanely inflated and a total rip off place! read more

NOTE: after reading the low ratings for this place, I noticed that they are all from black patrons. I did hear from local friends that it did have a past of being a bar for white supremacists, but that there were new hipster owners that turned it into a cool bar... one of the local friends (who happens to be a white man) said he still would never go there. Another friend had invited me here and I determined it'd be fine. I especially was nonchalant because I live in Berkeley, CA and I don't encounter racism almost ever. To the review: Weirdest experience ordering a New Orleans classic... a Sazerac. Morgan (I think that's what her name is) the Bartender asked me what I'd like and I realized I hadn't had a Sazerac. I wanted to do that before I left the city. I noticed they had a well stocked bar and ordered it. The Bartender looked at me sideways and asked me why I was ordering it. I told her that I wanted to try it and she asked "do you even like absinthe?"... I was confused by the question and I told her I loved botanicals, and loved absinthe. I've chased delicious vermut all over Spain and have a bottle of delicious absinthe at home from a local favorite St. George's Distillery. Did I look like someone one who didn't like absinthe? My mind pondered... what kinda brute did she think I was? On the contrary, I'm a lady.. a well heeled woman... but it didn't stop there. She let out a heavy sigh... I stood there awkwardly. It was just her, my friend, and I in the entire bar. It was empty. I asked her if the drink was hard to make, and she said no.... she was still very annoyed about making that Sazerac. I paused. I then asked her if the bar was known for a cocktail in particular, thinking maybe that was the cause of her annoyance. She answered no. I said the hell with it (in my mind) and went over to my friend and I let her know she could give me a holler when it was done. She did, and it was delicious! I'm not going to try and understand what that was about. I had just come here from my first Second Line and I was so happy to be in a city as beautiful as New Orleans. A very old school Bywater dive bar in the true definition of a NOLA neighborhood dive bar. I saw the Super bowl here last year and it was quite the scene. Cold beer, always some local character at the bar holding court, but limited food. Often a free table of food during game days that is supplimented by patrons. read more

The old infamous Bud Rip's famous for their legal and illegal vices has given way to a newly renovated Bud Rip's thats alot cleaner inside and out. The huge bar is still there and so is some of the same strange people that hang around the place but the owners of RBar have come in and done a great job with the place. Bud Rips is a solid neighborhood dive bar. It's without a doubt, mostly a locals bar and I don't know that I've ever run into a tourist while drinking here. Lots of hipsters usually hang out here but we're in the Bywater so that's to be expected. The bartenders are friendly (Brandon is a doll), service is usually pretty quick, and the drinks are decently priced. They have a large selection of local beers (make sure you get some ABITA, 40 Arpent, or Gnarly Barley). They do have liquor but no fancy craft cocktails (which I appreciate because it's just that kind of bar). On Tuesdays, they have an awesome Taco Tuesday pop-up. Chef Cassie always whips up something tasty and creative. There's always a vegetarian option too which is lovely. Bring cash though because I don't think she currently accepts card. I highly recommend going to the monthly drag show that is hosted here, Rips & Tits. Lots of fabulous Queens and Kweens abound and it's bound to be the most fun you'll have on a weeknight! If you go to the drag show, make sure you bring plenty of $1 to tip the performers. read more

This is a nifty little neighborhood bar with friendly staff, cool customers and a pretty good draft beer selection. A friend of mine lives right across the street from this place, so we have found ourselves here a couple of times. Don't be fooled by the outside- once you are inside the bar space is really big, complete with a long bar and booths and tables against the wall. As I said, there is a nice little draft beer selection- they have brews from Lagunitas, Great Raft and Gnarly Barley on tap, so you won't be stuck drinking just Miller High Life all night. They have a wide section for the pool tables, if that's your thing and the few times I have been here, the music has been pretty good and has ranged from jazz to rock, depending on the night. read more

Update: Bar got sold. Nowhere near as good. I live dangerously close to this fun bar. We know all the staff and love them all. Hitting up Bud Rip's for a pitcher of beer and a free game of darts is pretty much our go-to evening event for a low-key night. The clientele is delightfully varied and the bar itself is gorgeous. Pressed tin tile ceiling, a 30' wooden bar, and the chunky vinyl/concrete floor give the place a decaying glory look that is both unique and charming. The fact that you have to buzz in most weekday evenings gives it an almost speak-easy quality. The one downside of this place is the drink prices. They are totally reasonable, but not as cheap as they were just a couple years ago. Yes, they're better than Frenchmen or the Quarter, but the days when they served you a frosted goblet of draft beer for a dollar are sadly, recently, and inexplicably gone. Still, you can't beat Bud Rip's when it comes to watching Saints games. Free delicious food and the best rowdy Who Dat crowd in the neighborhood! read more

This place has a 20s speakeasy vibe. I wish I could rate it a 5, but there's strong stale smoke odor, and people smoke right outside the frequently open windows. Also, the ridiculous racist history is deplorable, but there are new owners now. I like the local regulars - the location is far enough from the tourists that you can relax. Prices are decent, and they have oysters and crawfish on the weekends. Also, dog friendly! Great staff, especially the bouncers. read more

The people who work here on the one and only night I ever went (or will go) are small, mean, rude jerks. I've been in bars all over the world and have never experienced such unwarranted, aggressive idiocy. Also, apparently the have a great reputation for being super racists, too, so that's fun. I have never in my life had such terrible service. The bartender is the absolute worst. She all but refused to serve me. After skipping me several times she finally asked for my ID. After pouring my drinks, I let her know she forgot a shot and she snatched all the drinks back and said she didn't have time plus som expletives. I live in the neighborhood -- and this is my main bar. Good mix of people and less likely to be packed than Markey's (although I also have great love for Markey's). To be clear, the bar DOES have patrons of all colors; ignore the Brooklynites -- sorry you two kids got carded, but that's just the way it goes sometimes. Come back when you're older. read more
