It smells like an interesting combination of garlic, turmeric, and other weird that probably shouldn't all be combined together. Our goal was to leave faster than our clothes could start smelling. The cocktails were great though. A six dollars tito's and water in a big cup, with two lemons was perfect. Two TVs were on, one was playing football. The other survivor - so that should tell you something we left before we finished the first drink probably won't go back , but maybe. Didn't stay long enough to snap a photo or to look at any possible food options. After the smell inside that place, they must be running a chicken Shawarma operation in the back. read more

Ambiance was great! Most of the staff was incredible and the food was great. The younger bartender wearing the bar trucker hat however doesn't care how much you spend, after spending well over $120 and tipping every drink we purchased we were refused a drink if we didn't tip and then after asking for a cheap shot told to F off. Crazy from an amazing multi hour experience. I hate to leave a bad review because the other bartenders and bar backs were great, but after traveling have the country getting treated like this is just plain rude and nothing like the service and hospitality we have received. I have no problem with dive bars. So let's first get that out of the way. My home bars are International, Rudy's and Reif's. Stickers on the mirror, graffiti on the bathroom floor, cash only shit. No -- the fact that St. Roch is a dive is not the problem. It's the staff. This was the first bar I went to when we landed. Yes, we are tourist. No, we weren't in floppy hats, cargo pants, and sock/sandals. (Anyway, we went back later that week and did see regulars dressed like this.) We were dressed normal, ordered beers, and tipped and the bartender was looking at us like we came into her house and tried to rob her. Half of the taps were out and she got annoyed that we were ordering them. (Sorry, we're not mind readers? Cross it out or put a cup on the tap.) We had one drink and felt so unwelcomed, we just bounced. We ended up at another bar and had a great time. Told them our experience at St Roch and everyone was like, "Oh yeah. They're known for being assholes around here." We ended up there a few days later to give it another shot. It was karaoke night. Once again, the bartender was acting as if we were bothering her. We put our names up for karaoke and the instructions were unclear. You sign up and then email the karaoke person a link to your video and then she puts it on.... Okay, first of all. You're a karaoke MC -- why am I doing your job for you? You literally have 2 things to do. Announce who is coming up next, and put up the songs. Instead she ignored us when we asked for help, and skipped us in line for ages. During this time, my partner got the 15 dollar haircut and beer deal. (One star just for the barber, she was great!) She told us the lowdown, apparently, the karaoke MC invites all of her theatre camp friends for open MC and ignores newcomers. It happens regularly. She asked the karaoke MC if she could do us a favour and push it back in the queue. And then we started seeing her same regulars up there 2/3 times without us going on once lmao. By this point it was three hours. The karaoke MC has the audacity to say, "I'm open to bribes!!!" Like?? Isn't this your job? We had some chats with regulars outside, who are much nicer than the staff and confirmed this is a regular occurence and it's fucked up. I spent the last two weeks bar crawling around every bar in the hood. This was the only place that treated us like trash. I suspect they get off and being jerks to people. We had a word directly to the MC, asking her to put on our song (THREE TIMES) and she kept saying, oh yeah you're next. We weren't next all three times. And she kept smirking about it. Karaoke is about community not totting your theatre kids dream of broadway with the 3rd rendition of Memories in one night. Skip this bar and go elsewhere. Also, everyone keeps mentioning the gutter punks. Yeah they're still there in 2021. But at least they're nicer than the staff. read more

I only come to St. Roch for O! Vegasm, but because you have to order drinks from the bar separately and because I do on occasion indulge (that is, every occasion I've been there which is about half a dozen times), a review for St. Roch is due. First, let's talk about that bathroom sign. I find not the misspell of "neighbors" funny, but the fact that so many people have taken it upon themselves to put in corrections or comments on the sign. I just imagine some new crusty come to town whipping out her sharpie and going to town on that thing before she realizes that she has bigger dogs to adopt. Second, there's the great Ketel One Mystery. As in, for some reason, Ketel One tastes like gin here. First time I ordered it, I sent it back. I never do that. The bartender actually poured the drink in front of me to show that it was, in fact, Ketel One. But I know my gin better than I know my mother and because I order vodka with soda, any extraneous flavor is immediately noticeable. My friend, also a bartender, concurred that it tasted like gin. I figured that they just didn't clean the pour spout properly. A week or two later, I returned and thoughtlessly ordered my usual. Again, the flavor of juniper berries made me wish I had just ordered tonic instead of soda. This time I didn't send it back. I also barely drank it. Yes, you read that right (ever drink a gin and soda??? Ugh). I'd normally be hard pressed to stick to Stoli henceforth, but it's been happening. Regardless, I've gotta give St. Roch props for live music, cheap drinks, friendly (non crusty punk) regulars and the fact that they have O! Vegasm operating out of the kitchen means that there are good people behind the entire operation. It is what it is. Finally, I think that from now on, I'm just going to call it St. Roach. Hey, it's out of fondness. Think of it as a cute mascot. I prefer them to crusties, if the truth must be told. read more

This place is a most unique bar. I place where you really wanna sit and people gaze. A man with no legs carried his wheelchair into the bar, and proceeded to play the slots in the back. Like a champion with no help, and no one would notice besides myself, because 4 years in, I am still a tourist. They also have sit down old school pac man which is pretty bad ass. 5 dollar burgers, trivia nights , and a bingo night. This is the most random of drives I've been to thus far in New Orleans. Oh yes, on Tuesdays you can also get your hair cut here with a beer for 15 bucks. Cheap booze, good food, and fantastic company. It's one of the best bars in all the land. I promise you need to check it out, if you enjoy people from all backgrounds. And the decor at the bar is fantastic. 5 stars indeed. read more

A dirty ole dive bar in a dirty ole neighborhood that is quickly gentrifying. There are often some dirty ole gutter punks in here that stink to high heaven. The drink prices are affordable NOLA style and NOT New York City style like lots of other pretentious new upstarts. Yep. It's a dive. That's for sure. However, the neighborhood feel, cheap drinks, and pretty tasty food (4-12 daily) make up for the fact that the street can be a tad shady. So I went back on Saturday night and it was steam/crust punk central. I had on a clean t-shirt and I felt out of place BUT whatever.. I'm used to it. There was a duo playing music, the man had white-dreads and was wearing full clown face paint. We need someplace we can "swill cheap drinks", yeah, and where we can bring our dogs. And that's what we do. We get schwilly, we play pool with the guys from the neighborhood, we write on the tables, we hang out with our dogs and we have a good time. You can go *literally* anywhere else in the city, so stop bitching about the one WE like! I thought I had (almost) seen it all. Until I visited this freak show (in a good way) down in New Orleans. This hybrid drinking hole, mexican cantina and what looks like a pop-up salon (yes, hair) is a true mix of genres and types of people. Yell down that kitchen hallway, order some shockingly good Mexican grub, get some super cheap drinks and subtlety observe all the diversity happening around you. It almost feels wrong writing about this place on Yelp, like it should remain in a hidden vacuum, existing only to those nearby or whom blindly stumble upon it. On Tuesday nights, they have a stylist there who cuts hair for $10. This was amazing for me because I'm new in town and job hunting, so I need to look polished but can't afford salon prices. The cut was great (especially considering I always just say "Make me look better" and hope for the best) and I was entertained with karaoke the whole time. So glad I found this spot! I can't imagine what else would convince someone that this would be the place to kick back cosmos and talk about what jerks I-Bankers can be. The St Roch tavern is where bands go for a 2AM "Round II" after they freak out on their first venue and throw their equipment at fans (Japanther; great show). The St Roch tavern is where near-fistfights at the ancient pool table barely rouse the bar line of professional alcoholics in their 60s, who can be found there pretty much anytime. In short, the St Roch tavern is a bona fide, authentic, red-blooded American dive. It attracts pretty much anyone who wants to get drunk cheaply, and as such it is a fascinating social laboratory. I haven't been there in a few months, but the last time it entered my own personal radar was the other week. There was a terrified-looking Scandinavian backpacker wandering aimlessly down my own very gentrified street. He said he was meeting someone at the Tavern. Some nights the $6 pitchers of beer and the siren call of roll-a-day outweighs the fact that; well that this is the tavern, a place to be avoided by respectable sorts. The kitchen opens at 4pm and serves some reasonably priced and surprisingly yummy food. There are usually at least a few dogs inside this bar, on or off leash, which is a pro to me as long as their owners are behaving nicely. But overall the Tavern still might have a pictures in the dictionary next to dive bars. Sometimes it's what you want and sometimes you cross the road to avoid bumping into to the overflow of snobby crusty kids littering in the street and pouring sweet after dancing to bounce late into the night. I love this place! Although I'm sad that my neighborhood bar is several states and 2000 miles away from the neighborhood in which i live, it's a wonderful place to be when i'm visiting one of my favorite cities! The cheeseburgers are GREAT ... The best thing were the Bloody Mary's. I've had a long-standing tradition when visiting N'awlins of researching the best Bloody Marys in the bars I visit. I tested every bartender at St. Roch's over the course of a weeks' visit and rate every one of them 4-5 stars. I got so familiar with the place that one morning I walked in and found a freshly made Bloody Mary sliding towards me across the bar with a cheerful bartender declaring "Here's your breakfast!" with a smile. It was my first but not last Bloody Mary morning there. I found people to be inquisitive and inviting, and made friends amongst the patrons quickly. One night I happened to be there for the memorial of a well-known person who had just passed. I didn't want to intrude, but when I would have left the bar to leave them to their remembrances of someone I'd never met, I found myself talking to the person's mother. And soon I was in joyous wake mode like the rest of them, included and welcomed as if i too had been a friend of the family. The music was different each night I was there. An accoustic duet singing lovely songs they'd written, a jazzy Tom Watsian piano player in a pork pie hat -- only he couldn't have been over 26! I had never heard of "bounce" music - the house style on Sundays. It was crazy fun! And having just read the review by Akila C. I can totally agree. Punks and booty shakin' all over. Not for the feint of heart. This place is the ultimate dive bar, and with dive bars come the locals, and the locals of this area tend to be upper crust/punk/hipsters. You may notice a stench on a Saturday bounce night. The dance floor is tiny, but it is a very fun crowd and nobody really pays attention. I love love love the cheap drinks. I am down with the weirdness of this bar for sure... it is part of the experience. read more
