It was the one thing she ever had that was hers alone. It came from a local manufacturer in Florida and she cherished that bike. I have spent the last two years trying to con my wife into letting me just get her a similar bike. We live in an incredibly bike friendly city (for the US) in California and we downsized to one car a few years back. We really like to ride for transportation on weekends. For a number of reasons, primarily the bike has sat for literally 30 years in a Wisconsin shed, and it would cost more to ship then it was worth, and I would spend thousands to spend a week restoring an ancient bike. I don't know if you ever had experience with a person with autism who has a fixation but if you do then you know. She could not be reasoned with, cajoled or bribed. I called wheel and sprocket Middleton first. The guy who answered the phone (my apologies I forgot every name the moment I heard it bad habit) explained he could pack it in a box but didn't recommend shipping if I was flying back. He told me I could check it as luggage instead. He told me this would take a couple days as they are busy with the back to school crowd. I thanked him for his time and hung up. I spent the next 20 minutes calling the airline, a shipping company and two competitors. Everything he told me on the phone is true. It is miles cheaper to get it packed and put on luggage than shipping. It does fit within standard luggage dimensions. He was also 50$ cheaper than the other place which didn't suggest it be luggage and instead told me it could be shipped by them. I went with the smart choice and brought it to Wheels and Sprocket. Once there a different guy was super helpful backed everything down to the quote on price and didn't bat an eye at the shape of the bike. I mean when I saw the bolts myself I decided the restoration went from a weekend job to a week job. I told him when we were leaving next week and that we would have to drive back from Milwaukee to get the bike for the airplane. He talked to his mechanic and he said he could have it back today. When I came back to get it a young woman helped me load it in to my car and was super helpful and made it quick and easy. I mean I just got a bike broken down and boxed but it made the person I love the most literally cry when her dream came true. It's just a bike, it's just a bike shop but goddamn sometimes a bunch of people really go out of there way to help it means something. So telling it here is the best I can do. Thank you guys.

The store is located in the historic Madison Train Depot, which sits at the corner of Washington Ave...and you guessed it, the train tracks! Space is gorgeous and has a lot of the original and historic charm left. The main space is a large sprawling open room with floor to ceiling windows flanked by multiple rows of bicycles. There is a smaller space through a step down that features more bikes lining the walls. In addition to the actual bicycles, they offer a wide variety of accessories, tools, kits, tires, tubes, etc...and even a few other outdoor sports for those who go beyond bikes. Service was super friendly. While we were not after a bicycle that day, the staff was very welcoming, helpful and enjoyed chatting up about bicycles...as we had questions! I was able to ride a path behind the shop to get a feel and the workers here were very helpful and offered honest advice. Once I had the bike and put it together, I rode over and got it checked out to make sure I put it together correctly and they immediately were able to help me true the wheels and changed out a squeaky brake pad for me - free of cost. In addition to maintenance and repairs, the staff have the mindset of a teacher and will assist in the selection of the best bike for your needs--even if it means pointing out a product sold by a different bike shop. That said, the selection of quality bikes (cargo or standard, e-bike or not) which the Cargo Bike Shop sells is amazing, so the likelihood you'll find better equipment elsewhere is low. Following a very poor experience with another bike shop in Madison I needed to find an honest mechanic willing and able to service my cargo e-bike. Tim, at the Cargo Bike Shop fit the bill. Though I did not purchase my bike from him, he and his staff were helpful and far more knowledgeable about e-bikes and equipped to service them than any of the other shops I'd visited. Following a great experience with him on some basic maintenance, Tim helped me scope out a fairly large drive-train customization. Which in the end turned out even better than I'd hoped. His communication before and during the project was stellar: Tim warned me beforehand of the possibility of issues with the availability of some parts I'd selected, and successfully sourced the parts when the sole supplier was less than responsive. Even with a significant amount of extra effort on Tim's part, the final price was fair and the quality of work second-to-none.

I have no idea how to use this bike rack and the manual is no longer online. Oops! Someone else managed to get the bike precariously perched on the rack, upside down, but it wasn't stable enough for a long drive. So I swung into Erik's and asked for help. There were only a couple of customers and a couple of employees, but the wait for service was long. I wasn't a paying customer, though, so I'm not going to ding them for that. One of the employees came outside with me, took one look at my upside down bike, and immediately got down to business showing me the proper way to load up a bike on the rack (hint: that bar I didn't know what to do with? It was SUPER important) The help was much appreciated, and if I was sticking around Madison I'd be happy to go back in the future as an actual customer.
