This outfit is despicable, deplorable & abusive beyond description. After asking them to write an estimate to do a simple gutter diversion job at arm's length, & telling them for the city to reimburse, they have to provide an Estimate with a total for labor & parts. Instead, they can't bother to figure out what 2 simple gutter pieces cost, & wanting to fill the holes w/hydraulic cement (insane), they just list a labor charge, & ask for 10% down, labor & material billed daily, & a credit card on file, I called them to speak to a total incompetent who then hands it over to Dick Hoerr, who called me a "social idiot", and a "moron", & that he'd never do a job for me. As if I would EVER consider a contractor who would call me filthy names & doesn't even know how to do the job. You don't pour 20-30 ft. of hydraulic cement in the holes - you cover the holes with rubber or aluminum & then coat that w/a small amount of hydraulic cement. Then, in his answer to one of the numerous negative reviews, he writes: "We are the highest rated handyman company on Angie's in the United States and we are located here in Chicago. I personally live in the Chicagoland Area. Simply put this is one of those landlords that attempts to beat down labor after they work on his home in an effort to maximize his profit. I initially booked an appointment to mount my TV & install a cord drop for October 1. I went into depth with the scheduler about the type of mount and size of my TV. Two hours before the appointment, they cancelled. OK, it happens. We rescheduled for Monday. Monday arrives, and the technician can't mount my TV because it's a two person job, and additionally, he didn't have the tools he needed for my particular mount. The technician installs the cord drop for $150. Scheduler Mike calls to get more information from me and says he'll call me back. He doesn't call back. I called back on Tuesday. They can't get me in for another 7 days. Now I have a $150 port installed in my wall and no mounted TV. It's frustrating and disappointing that a lack of proper administration got me rescheduled twice, and now there's nothing open for another week. I'm also mad about paying $150 for a cord drop - that is simply not a $150 project. I do not recommend these guys at all. Save your time and money. read more

I was referred to this company by a reliable source and was so outdone by my experience that I had to share...for your safety. I scheduled an apt for 20 May 2021 @2p after a silly exchange with a rep over the phone. When scheduling online, you must pre-pay for the 1st hour of service. No issue there but to actually schedule the appointment which is what I thought I was doing by pre-paying after selecting a date, I received a call saying that in order to actually schedule, they require a credit card on file just in case the appointment extends the pre-paid hour. A bit silly as I stated but what eves. 20 May around 3p, I call to inquire where this handyman was; having scheduled myself to leave my office early to be home only to learn, I had never been scheduled. The guys offered a free hour and I rescheduled for today. The handyman calls to confirm my 2p but informed me he wouldn't arrive until 4p. That did not fly for me so he adjusted his day and arrived @3p. He was hanging photos on a wall...easy you think huh? After hanging roughly 7 photos, I'm like are you considering the space between? Did you forget there's a bench in front of the photos and that the photos should be a bit higher to avoid guests knocking them off the wall when sitting to put on shoes? After he adjusted a few it just got worse. I physically laid the photos out on the floor showing him where they should go but this guy could not figure it out. After I pointed out huge discrepancies in spacing that he agreed he saw, he said to me, I'm about to lose my cool. Immediately I felt at any moment, this guy who'd been talking to himself the entire time could hurt me if I continued to stress my concern about the hanging of the photos. He then said I'm feeling too anxious and before I lose it, I'm just gonna leave and leave he did. But not after creating huge, multiple holes in my walls. He was not equipped having large screws and literally, the same tool box I have and trust me, I bought it because it was cute! WTF! I tried to call the company...no answer. So guess what, I hung them myself and did a fine job BTW. The screening process of these handymen is obviously overlooked. I shudder to think what could have happened if this guy actually "lost it". I'm a woman, home alone with this obviously unstable guy. I never raised my voice, disrespected him in anyway. I did nothing to cause his response. I am expecting a full refund of my pre-paid hour and will be sure to follow up here and on google with how this company handles this horrific experience. DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY...FOR YOUR SAFETY! Needed a hole in the ceiling patched up at my mothers place, just drywall. I went in depth with the scheduler Jerome about how I only needed a patch up, no painting afterwards. I submitted photos and a detailed description of the project which again, I went over with Jerome. Day of the project, their employee Malcolm, shows up unprepared without really any supplies. He tells my mother "I don't have any information about the job, I need to take a look". (Ummm, seems pretty unprofessional to not know what is going on given that I have discussed in depth what I need taken care of) He then tells my mother "do you have any drywall?" (Seriously?) " I can't do the job today because my vehicle is not large enough to bring back supplies (and also to reiterate), I had no idea what the job is until now". This is what you would call giving an estimate. That is not what we discussed in depth. They gave me a price, amount of hours that it would take for details of the job, yet they send someone who doesn't even know what's going on, and then asks the homeowner if they can give up some drywall and supplies? What an effing joke this is. And to add insult to injury - I have emailed these people twice, texted Jerome (who previously had been getting back to me immediately), and they are COMPLETELY GHOSTING ME. Horribly horrible experience. The idea is great until you realize that they don't guarantee that any work will actually be done or that it will be done well. This guy came, sat around, refused to climb the stairs to look at the work that was discussed when I called, left the Home Depot at 9:48 but didn't get back to the property until 11am. It's 20 minutes away even in heavy traffic. And they didn't blink an eye trying to get paid for it. Total nonsense. Instead of calling me back about my complaints, they repeatedly tried billing my card until the bank shut it down for fraud. Most laughable was his billing for an hour to troubleshoot a light and claim he couldn't fix it. The guys I hired who actually did the work days later, moved one ceiling tile and I watched him connect the wires and turn the light on. Less than 10 minutes. So many lies. The contractor wasn't going to do the ceiling because I "changed the scope of the work". But he bought ceiling tiles after we discussed the scope of the work? Why? No logical answer. He told me he was done and going to start on the ceiling when I called at 3:20. When I got there at 4, he hadn't even opened the ceiling tiles. What did he do between 3:20 and 4? Nothing. But he billed for it. Their line is, "we're a time and material company", as if that excuses blatant theft of time. This guy billed for easily 4 hours of time he wasn't working. He completed 4 tasks which should have taken someone with 20 years of experience like they claim, about 3-4 hours. He billed for 8. I literally would have done better throwing the money out of the window while driving. I had to hire someone days later to actually do the work I hired them to do. It was all completed for $800 and in one day. In the end, they were less concerned with poor quality work and time theft and more concerned with threats about a lien and "soon it will be out of my hands". I was planning to see them in court, that's how ludicrous this was. I was advised that I currently have more money than time to waste so "throw them whatever you're comfortable with and let them go away". Brad is a good customer service agent and he tried really hard to sell their line of BS and had he not done a good job of pretending to care and acting like he was being generous, I would have blocked them and went on about my life until it ended in court. If you have one task and time to stand over their shoulder watching, they may work, otherwise save your time and frustration and find a company that intends to provide a solid service and isn't trying to charge you just for showing up. read more

The issue I had was that the office did not let me know that they would need to go out to actually buy the caulking which added to the hourly time. Jessie was punchual, informative and pleasant while we discussed options. I decided that day to continue using Budget Right and requesting Jessie. Jessie has been my contractor for many years and I've never had a bad experience. Over the years he has replaced a kitchen faucet; installed a kitchen counter and sink; installed a bathroom vanity with faucet; repaired tile and patched a whole in my ceiling. Let me just preface by saying that in all my years on planet earth I have never felt the need to write a YELP or google review, but after the horrible service I received (or lack thereof), I had to. I hope no one has the displeasure of speaking to the owner, Dirk, who I first thought was a glorified receptionist due to his behavior. My original interaction with him was quite pleasant but very soon things turned sour. I booked an appointment for a washer/dryer installation for a certain date & time but ended up needing to change the appointment a few days later. No problems there and the other guy I spoke with to amend the appointment date and time with was actually very polite (don't remember his name). In doing this, I also found out that Dirk had not even booked the correct time on the original date but eventually that was remedied anyways due to me needing to change it, so I didn't make a big deal out of it because whatever, right? Things worked out anyways. When booking the new appointment for Thursday at 4, I was told a time slot later than that would not be possible and since I needed it done ASAP, I took it. This meant I would have to leave work 30 minutes early and start work again late as well. Fast forward to the date of the appointment and the handymen are 30 minutes late already, so I call them and after multiple missed phone calls I asked once and then reiterated whether they'd be showing up at all or if I had accidentally missed them somehow (to make evident that I was not complaining about the handymen) and this is when the owner started getting triggered. He told me it would take them an additional 40 minutes to reach and I expressed my distress in a very calm albeit annoyed tone. After repeatedly asking me what he wants him to do about the situation as he has no control over "traffic", I said "Well, I still want them to come, but I wish they would have showed up at the actual time I booked them because I left work early to be home for the appointment." By this point, Dirk was speaking in a very loud tone, repeatedly asking me the same redundant question, "What do you want me to do about this?" or something along those lines. By this point, I was very jaded with the whole experience so I made it clear that I was NOT trying to be an A$$h*le, but was just frustrated (ALL while keeping my cool and never raising my tone), to this Dirk responded, "Actually you are being an A$$h*le, so I'm cancelling your appointment, you get no service" and hung up. And today, I received a cal telling me my card had "insufficient funds" and they couldn't charge me for the work they completed. Trying to charge me for work you didn't do, men you didn't send and swear words you hurled at me. Absolutely ludicrous. What a joke of a "business". Go read the other reviews on yelp and google reviews, he childishly sits at his computer all day replying to negative reviews with outrageous comparisons of the reviewers to movie characters but is actually quite a Disney character himself who can't even book an appointment correctly. This entire exchange was apparently recorded, so I can attest to the fact that nothing I said here was untrue. This was the worst, most entitled customer service experience I've ever had and the plethora of 1 star reviews on yelp are further evidence of that. I never read reviews or trust them, but if ONCE in your life you're going to trust a review. Trust this one. read more

Mario, my handyman, just finished my three-day project and everything looks perfect! Before I hired them, I was a little suspicious as there are several "not good" reviews on Yelp, but I'm really glad that I chose them! I contacted Budget Right Handyman to fix and change several items for my first remodeling project in August. My experience with Sam and Brad have been satisfying. As my HOA is very specific re contractor's insurance, I decided to contact Budget Right around June just in case we couldn't get everything figured before the project. Budget Right was the only contractor (out of 5 contractors I am working with) that gave me the correct paperwork right away. Since I contacted them almost 2 months prior to my project, I made many changes to scope of work multiple times, but Sam and Brad were always very patient and prompt re my request. When I'm not sure if certain items, e.g. vanity and shower room corner shelves, may work for my place, Sam and Brad can always give me the answer and suggestions. Mario's work - swapping interior doors, replacing vanity, installing new light fixtures, etc. has been flawless! I wonder if there's anything that he can't fix. The project was well within the estimated time, and everything looks perfect. Although I wish nothing in my home breaks, I will definitely ask them for help again if that happens :) read more

We had an extremely negative experience with this company in April 2023. The service technician was 45 minutes late for the initial appointment. He stayed only for 15 minutes, without performing any measurements and without discussing any project details. Two days later, we received an estimate that was 10 times larger than what was initial quoted to us, based on the photos we had submitted. This was not worth a $99 pre-payment for the initial appointment. When I emailed the company rep, Dirk Hoerr, regarding those issues, the conversation quickly deteriorated into personal insults, including that as a woman, I was "ridiculous," that I should just talk to my husband first, and, when my husband supported me, Mr. Hoerr emailed that my husband doesn't have "balls." Mr. Hoerr also threatened us with a legal restraining order so that we do not complain anymore. All this in response to a polite email pointing out that the technician was late, did not do measurements, and the estimate was grossly excessive. The work seems to have been done well, but I feel I paid about $100 too much because I was told the ONLY way to install my bathroom exhaust fan correctly was to go to a specific store (at a cost of about $75 for travel) to buy a specific tape although I had supplies on-hand (both clamps and foil tape) that were sufficient according to installation instructions (on Lowes, Home Depot and other sites).  He then proceeded to buy a 50-meter long $22 extreme weather roll (rather than a $4 roll made for this exact purpose - bathroom fan installations).  Further, the remainder (over 9/10ths of the roll) was not given to me.   They have not replied to emails, nor provided the receipt I requested (which was for nearly $40 for some reason), nor returned the roll of tape to me. read more

The management of Budget Right Handyman offered our building association $700 (credit) to sign a non-disclosure agreement and delete our board member's poor reviews of their services. The board unanimously refused. So this is literally the most expensive review you'll read all day. I hope you enjoy it, because our building paid $700 for your right to read it. I won't bore you with all the sordid details, but they were hired to do some basic aesthetic improvements. They did all of the things you can read about in the other reviews. They low-balled our association into getting the job. They sent someone who was under-qualified so it took forever to get the job done, and the job was sloppy. That person billed us time to shop for basic tools they did not have. We purchased materials for this person to pick up from a local store. After they went there, they claimed that the store did not furnish them with the materials we'd paid for. They maintained this story until we confronted Budget Right management with a receipt. They dropped the issue, no apology or explanation. Budget Right's final bill exceeded their estimate by about 100% and then they blamed that on our Association's President for not stopping their worker in the middle of the job when the estimate amount was reached. When the board complained, Budget Right put a lien on the building. Sadly, they couldn't even get that right, because when we read the lien, the address was to a building down the street. At a board meeting the president of our association apologized profusely to the residents of our building for hiring Budget Right. He said that about 200 emails had been exchanged as a result of the mess. All of the time wasted for a job that was estimated at under $2000! I could go on, like how they record your conversations with their people without consent, which is illegal in Illinois. Then there is their bizarre TOS, which I printed out and read with the help of a magnifying glass. I read some of it to an attorney and he literally burst out laughing. But our board members weren't laughing when they realized they were obliged to those byzantine terms. They were more than happy to pay BRH off to be free of them forever. Good thing they did not sign the non-disclosure, or anything else. They never take responsibility for their "mistakes". Read their management's response to their numerous poor reviews. They either laugh at their customers, blame them or claim that Yelp is conspiring against them. This review is for a job that was done over a year ago. For all the time and trouble we could have just watched a youtube home improvement tutorial and just DIY'd it in less time, less headache. Caveat Emptor!!! read more

After my "handyman" left on Sunday, I called Budget Right and left a voice message asking that a manager call me back. Chris returned my call very promptly and discussed my experience. He was extremely apologetic and was adamant that they were going to make the experience right and fix the damage that had been done. He made an appointment for handyman G. to come to my apartment the following Saturday at 2pm to do the repairs and reposition the bike hooks like I had initially requested. At 1:00 on Saturday (an hour before my handyman was supposed to arrive), I got a call from Brad telling me that they had to reschedule. I didn't have much of a choice at that point.. We rescheduled for 4pm on Tuesday, and he assured me that the new handyman, Luis, was perfectly capable of doing the job. Luis WAS great - he checked the TV and floating shelf, re-hung the bike hooks, plugged all of the holes with putty, dried the putty, and then got paint to paint over it. He was a very nice guy, personable, cleaned up after himself, and was even cognizant enough to take off his shoes. I feel bad, though, that the schedule he had contained two different times - 2pm and 4pm. I was at work until well after 3pm, and didn't get home until 3:30. If I had had a handyman like Luis in the first place, there would have been no issue. I'm thankful that Budget Right made good on their promise to remedy the situation. I would use them again in the future, but I would be extremely adamant that they send a seasoned, tried-and-true handyman for the job. read more

I have been a customer of Budget Right for 5+ years and have used them on multiple properties, and after all this time I can no longer recommend them to anyone in good faith. I have had solid work done by their project managers and some not so solid, but the main reason I can't recommend this company is because of their business model and bullying of customers. I recently booked Budget Right to put a second coat of paint in my bathroom (scheduling this was difficult on their end, but I don't want to digress from the root issue here). Job was booked for 9/10 at 3 pm. Painter was running late from his previous job and called to let me know and asked me if there was supplies (rollers, etc) at the place. An hour later he finally shows up, which now he is an hour and a half late. After 25 mins he texts me this.... "I spoke to my manager and he said I have to charge you guys for an hour and a half but credit you a half of an hour goodwill time, we've basicly run out of time and I have to make my next appointment. Also I was told that only the ceiling needs a second coat of paint but the entire bathroom does." (This is exact text from painter) I dig into this a bit and find out who his manager is a fella by the name of Sam. Sam finally calls me on Monday (9/13) to explain why I was charged, and his run down of the story was completely false. His timeline was inaccurate and skewed to make it seem like they were doing me a huge favor by comping me the the half hour. The hour that I'm being charged was for the Home Depot run to buy rollers(not paint just the equipment a painter needs to paint). After he finished his version I gave my side, which was backed with time stamped text messages between me and the pm. I completely proved his side of the story to be false, and asked a simple question. If you accepted a painting job why would I be charged to go get paint supplies? Why would your painter not come prepared? He replied with some rambling answer and was stumped by the time stamped text messages and replied with 'you're still getting charged'. Naturally the conversation ended there. I have no energy to waste trying to argue with someone when presented with clear facts doesn't do the right thing. What a joke. Save yourself and don't use this company. I know I will never use them again. read more

They quoted me for painting my condo in Chicago which has a small living room, small kitchen and bath which is around 600 sq ft and doing caulking in the tub would be a two day job. I also told them that I would be selling my condo so I needed it to look good for this. The guys who were painting told me that the area around the air conditioning, looked good other than coffee stains and dust so did not think they should paint it. I asked them if they could as I wanted a fresh coat. After two days, they did not finish, they charged me over $1800 and wanted to come back the following week to finish and charge me more. They only did one coat, never did any of the tub, left early the second day, and stated they finished all of the baseboards and trim, and did not. The condo looks worse since they "painted". They stated that they could not paint when the wall is wet so I should have put an extra day in between painting, the painter told me that I choose the paint and he thought it would be a one coat job but did not have that paint, but the only thing I choose was the color. They blamed me. When I discussed the issues with coordinator, they basically told me it was my issue, they did what they could in those two days, and that it is really hard to paint, that they did do the base boards and trim, but then they must have painted over it again with the wall paint. DO NOT USE THIS PLACE, they charge way too much for incomplete work and they cannot paint in the lines. I asked them to come back to fix and they said they would only if they would charge mem more. They are not friendly at all or customer service friendly. I have painted my 3400 sq ft house for $3500.00 so not sure how they can justify two days and a 600 sq ft place with $2800. I've used them four times now, with one out of four visits being good. The first time was for two hours of prepaid work- I needed to fix some doors that were uneven, and, fix the exhaust vent from my oven/range. The person who came took care of the doors, but then said he couldn't do the vent (even though we had all the supplies). He told us we could rebook to finish the job. He was also seemingly mad that the company booked him on the day before Thanksgiving (even though we had given lots of different options when booking). On to visit 2. We had a different person come for round 2, who was able to finish the exhaust vent with time to spare, so we also had him hang a wall mirror. Both jobs completed in an hour. Visit 3: Bathroom light fixture. The person who came hung the light upside down from what I requested, and, tried to overbill me. I submitted this through the website, where they say they guarantee work, but never heard back. Visit 4: Ceiling fan installation. For some reason that's not clear to me, I gave them one more chance. The person who came was beyond unprofessional and smelled so badly of smoke that I had to air my house out. The fan got installed, but not worth the unprofessionalism and the beyond inappropriate remark the contractor said to me. The company was very responsive to my complaint about the individual. However, my bad experiences with this company far outweigh the good. This was the last chance for them. read more

Disrespected and disappointed. Our first scheduled day and time, did not happen. Simply, they did not show up; did not call their office; neither the handyman nor the office called me. Thirty minutes after the scheduled time, I phoned their office and after at least ten minutes, the office was able to locate their employee and learn from him that he "was running late". My appointment was at 10 am. We re-scheduled for the next day. I insisted that different employee be sent out. The next day at 3 pm, a different employee did stop by. Upon arriving, he tells me that he must go out again. He needs to purchase the bath tub chalk that is needed for the job. All along, I told every employee that the work that needed to be done was to RE-CHALK THE BATH TUB. This employee told me that he was "one the clock" starting at 3 pm so I would be paying for him to drive to the store; shop; drive back; and park again. This was a 35 minute waste of time and a waste of my money. This was something less that honest and ethical. Run away from this company and these people. read more

Budget Right Handyman is the best! Tim did an excellent job helping me fix/install things inside my home. I'm so glad I was able to find this company through Two Buck Duck!! Tim was wonderful to work with. He normally does not work on Saturdays unless its for an 8 hour job, but for me, he allowed an exception. I was so grateful!! He not only arrived on time, but EARLIER than expected, which really worked out for me. He completed the two main jobs I needed done so quickly that we started looking for things for him to do around my home! I had wanted to have towel hooks installed into my bathroom but was lazy and never purchased them. Tim offered to wait for me while I went to Home Depot to pick up the towel hooks. After a quick trip to Home Depot, we still had time left for Tim to install the hooks. He did an excellent job with the installation! So reliable, so friendly, so efficient! Thanks to Tim and Budget Right Handyman! P.S. Tim has a grinder and knows how to use it! I have used Budget Right Handyman several times with success. I hired them to replace caulk around several exterior windows where it needed replacement. The handyman showed up on time and did the work but did an awful job. I hired someone as I know it takes skill to place caulk in a straight line without bunching up and to have consistency in the width. I could have done the crummy job that he did but hired someone to do it right. Budget RIght Handyman claims that they guarantee the work. I submitted photos and their website promises response in 24 hours. I waited from Saturday to Wednesday and did not hear back. I phoned on Wednesday and was promised a phone call, .I have not heard back from them another 24 hours later. I'm angry and won't use them again. read more

I needed a heating element swapped out and replaced with a new I ordered from the manufacturer. The technician, Justin, arrived promptly, and began work immediately. After installation of the new heater, it did not operate. Justin opened the switch and found it worked properly. Then he removed a metal panel to check other wiring issues. He discovered a melted wire in harness. He quickly replaced it and checked for operation. The heater was working properly. Great job! read more
