I drive 2 hours to go to this restaurant in the small town of Riner. It's close to Christiansburg and VA Tech. Each day there are home cooked sides along with a selection of buffalo entrees. I love the burgers! Today I got the low carb double buffalo burger with fresh mushrooms and home cooked fries!! Save room for dessert because these homemade pies and cakes. Today we had the mandarin pie. Oh my!!!!! It's creamy and light and delicious. Reminds me of my grandma's pie. The service is one of a kind. Yelp led me and my husband to this little gem when on our way home from a trip to see my parents in NC. It's a little over 4 miles off 81 and well worth the short detour. We ordered the Philly cheesesteak from the regular menu and the black & blue burger from the specials menu. We also split a side of the "buffalo ear" fries with cilantro lime dipping sauce, which was delicious and the slightly zippy. It was all incredible! We're not normally huge dessert eaters, but after reading the rave reviews, we decided to grab a slice of coconut custard pie to go. The portion was generous, and the pie was perfect for us. The sweetness was subtle. My husband said that while he wouldn't typically have gone for a coconut custard, this "was a delight!" Finally got around to eating here after years of hearing about it. This place is awesome! Calm, homey atmosphere, friendly staff, cold canned drinks and tea. Brisket was a touch dry, but flavorful, according to the person with me. I got the double bison burger and seasoned fries and it was not only giant, but unbelievably juicy and flavorful. You can really taste the meat. The fries are hand cut and seasoned well and fried perfectly. I have a big appetite, but I could barely finish my food! I was told I HAD to try the buffalo burger, so that's what I did. It was not bad, but quite honestly I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between this buffalo burger and a regular burger. I also tried the coconut custard pie, it looks like all their desserts are homemade which is great, but the pie I had did just taste a little old. When we visited it was dine out only, and all dishes were disposable. Options were the smallish porch with a mishmash of furniture or nosh in your car. Definitely no ambience. The porch looks out over a gas station parking lot and busy Riner Road. We could overlook that as we were excited to try the buffalo based on the previous rave reviews. We had the Low Carb Platter with ¼ lb buffalo burger topped with cheese, onions and mushrooms. The toppings tasted great but the buffalo burger was thin, bland and had very little meaty flavor. Well, boo - this was supposed to be the highlight! The side of fries and salad were typical. For us, not worth a repeat visit. read more

I had the small bowl of bison chili ($3.29) which was quite good. If you want a piece of cornbread it is an extra 99 cents, but is very good. Be aware that the chili is fairly spicy hot and the small serving is in a small dish -- the size that the side orders are served in. You can also order chopped onions, jalapeños, shredded cheese and sour cream to go along with your chili. I am not sure if there is a charge for those or not. Many of the bison menu items sounded like they may be good. The owner raises the bison, and the meat served comes from her herd. I don't know if you can buy the bison meat there and take it home to cook for yourself or not. I got a large serving of the chili to go and they were very thoughtful and added a small package of ice to keep it chilled for the 3 1/2 hour drive home. I look forward to stopping by there and trying more things the next time I am down that way. I discovered the Riner gem during my student teaching at Auburn Elementary down the road. My cohort and I would grab a bite on our way back to Radtown. This buffalo spot is so great, I honestly don't know how to write a review to do the food justice. I believe the fresh buffalo meat, most everything is made with, comes from a local bison farm. We were visiting from San Francisco Bay Area and were on our way to pick up our dog (who had needed emergency care from the VA Tech Vet School - awesome place BTW). We saw the signs for this Buffalo place and debated about grabbing a sandwich. As we pulled up, it didn't make much of an impression - looks pretty nondescript. But then we went in: Super service - very friendly people with great stories about the place. The owner raises the buffalo herself. I ordered the steak sandwich - I love steak sandwiches so I am pretty picky about them. This was hands-down the BEST steak sandwich I have ever eaten. My husband got the burger and loved it - but he admitted he would absolutely order my steak sandwich next time. I am hoping we will get back to southwest VA soon - I will SO be back!! A real country gem. The drive to buffalo & more is scenic & delightful. The food even more so. The pork BBQ was absolutely divine. My favorite thing however is that they use exclusively humanely treated local meat to make their delicious home style meals. They have their own herds of buffalo. It is a modest restaurant with humble decor but the staff & owner clearly have passion for their food as well as incredible talent. The food more than makes up for the antiquated decor. This is a hole in the wall to say the least. Don't go expecting any type of ambiance! But do go so see a very unique menu that predominantly features locally raised buffalo and bison (although I did see some boxes that may indicate that they need to supplement their supply of local buffalo from time to time). I believe the owners of the restaurant also own the buffalo ranch that is 15 miles away. The restaurant is very small and seems to do a fair amount of to go business as well as sales of meat - we came home with 2 lbs of ground buffalo, a pound of Italian buffalo sausage and a buffalo roast! Note the pricing on the beef is not inexpensive - think grass fed prices at whole foods. This is not a Sysco restaurant that opens a box or bottle and serves, it is obvious they they make their sides and dressing in house not to mention the fantastic selection of homemade desserts. They also use quality ingredients - there are freezers and coolers tucked away all over the restaurant and I could see the good quality provolone and roasted garlic in one of the refrigerators. I had the low carb platter -a buffalo burger topped with provolone and sautéed mushrooms and onions and a salad with real baby lettuce (not the iceberg junk) carrots and cucumbers. I had the house made banana dressing - I asked if it was sweet and the waitress said it was a spicy vinegarette - I'm guessing it was suppose to be banana pepper?... Anyhow, it wasn't spicy or sweet and really didn't not have much flavor but I still give them credit for making their own dressings! I would totally order this again. Visiting Virginia this Southern California girl was feeling adventurous for something a little different than what I find back home. I was a little hesitant walking into roadside location as it has a bit of a rustic feel... The minute we walked in southern hospitality was prevalent and impressive, greeted first on the porch by one of the ladies working there and inside by the lovely owner herself, classic southern charm and warmth... Looking over them menu I ordered the bison burger and macaroni salad. The macaroni salad reminded me of my mother-in-law's recipe (she was a Virginia native) and it was good, but I sampled my son's macaroni and cheese and it was even better (also reminding me of my mother-in-law's classic southern cooking...) but honestly I could've had any side dish and it would've paled in comparison to the main event... That bison burger was the best burger I've ever eaten in my life... I would abandon California's In and Out forever for this bison burger... My mouth has never been so happy!! The only negative thing I can say is that I only ordered one... I was already grieving the end of my most amazing burger so I decided to try to find comfort in dessert... And just when I thought my palate could never be impressed again I had the best piece of peach cobbler ever... Warm and a la mode, thank you very much... The phrase "just like mom makes" is perfect as all the desserts are made by the owner's mother... And her hands must be blessed by God. Can't say enough good things about buffalo & more. My parents live in Riner and go to B&M at least 3-4 times a week. Today I had the fried pickles with homemade jalapeño sauce and then a fresh salad with homemade banana dressing. Topped it off with homemade chocolate chip pie. The food is superb as always but most important Carla and Connie are such nice hosts. They are attentive and always look after their guests with compassion and patience. All the food is homemade!!
