Having been a longtime patron of the Rex Hotel back when it was first restored in the 1980s, imagine the delight when you find an old haunt reimagined and refreshed for today's patrons. The interior is western themed, naturally, and overstuffed with atmosphere not to mention the seats. Great views of the bar and kitchen, you can watch a crew hard at work. The courtyard seating remains delightful but on a Billings Friday night in the historic railroad district it was loud, but good times. The setting and service are top-notch. The Menu is expansive for a Montana steakhouse, lots, lots of choices besides the beef, with wonderful sides, and salads. Solid wine and beer list but imaginative cocktails. Do try the Orange Nor'easter, a blend of bourbon, ginger beer, maple syrup and ginger beer that is a great summer drink. The NY strip was superb--wish the more expensive places back in the east would send their folks out west to learn how to grill steak. Seared with a crispy outside but perfect medium rare on the inside. The steak bites appetizer was a meal into itself, and spot on in its prep. Loved the deluxe mashed potatoes. Beet salad was fresh and zingy. Even the bread service was superior. The wait staff did a great job of explaining everything. But they couldn't convince us to do desserts--bet they are top notch too. If you're looking for a steakhouse in Billings, this is the spot! We wanted a really good last meal in Billings and wanted local beef. This was definitely the right move. The meat portions are huge, like 16-20 ounces for each cut, so unless you're starving, definitely consider splitting between two people. Each cut is served a la carte with the sides meant to share for the table. I didn't do that and ordered the butter aged ribeye, and my husband and I shared the escargot, lobster mac and cheese, and their vegetable of the day which was a stuffed pepper. The steak was INCREDIBLE. I finished it all, even though I was then very full for multiple days. I loved the escargot as well, it was so cheesy and buttery. The Mac and cheese is also a stand out, definitely order it, so delicious. The stuffed peppers weren't great, I didn't really like them. They had too much going on flavor-wise that didn't really work. If I were to go back, I'd get a more standard steakhouse side like broccoli or asparagus. To drink, I ordered the gin fizz. It had little bits of lavender on top and you could really taste it in each sip, but it wasn't overpowering. Very delish. The service was great throughout the evening. We visited Buffalo Block while in town and had a fantastic experience. The atmosphere is intimate, with low lighting and private seating arrangements that make for a very comfortable dining experience. Our waiter was great and did their best to accommodate our kids, but this really isn't a child-friendly restaurant. My steak was excellent, as was my wife's--cooked perfectly and full of flavor. One thing to note: steaks are served a la carte, which wasn't well explained, but we ended up ordering more food than needed for the kids, so that worked out. That said, everything we had was delicious, and the expertly crafted drinks were a highlight. The filet tastes exactly like a filet (which is a great thing) and the mashed potatoes were those perfectly thick yet creamy consistency which complimented to steak really well. The lobster bisque on the other hand was okay, with the lobster tasting like it was just defrosted. I understand we were nowhere near the ocean, so of course the lobster had to be frozen, but I felt like it could have been defrosted earlier/cooked in a way to get rid of that taste. However, in comparison to everything else I honestly feel like this is a small thing, and one could order another starter instead. My colleagues and I had dinner here last week for a celebration! It was a great experience. It is very high end and pricey. We sat in the back dining room. Only a few tables were sat, but it was a Thursday evening. Our server was really nice, helpful and bubbly. She made good recommendations! The bread was SO GOOD. I wish I asked for more. I had a glass of the Bordeaux and my colleague all ordered cocktails. I split the surf and turf (shrimps) and we ordered two sides, lobster Mac and cheese and Brussel sprouts. The Brussel sprouts were the best part of my meal. The steak was just ok, the shrimps didn't quite taste like anything and the lobster Mac and cheese barely had any lobster in it. My other colleagues shared the seafood fettuccine in the cheese wheel. It was fun to watch the waitress make it! I think they liked their meal, they seemed pleased. Another person in our party ordered the pork chop. Holy Moley was it huge!! He also seemed like he liked it! Overall, I liked this place. Like I said, it's really pricey but I think it's warranted. Kayland at the reception desk was very nice, cordial and very accommodating. Montana took our reservation over the phone and was very helpful, kind and friendly. Kelly and Lauren were our Server, both ladies have a great personality. They are so entertaining but in a fun way. Their homemade dinner rolls are to die for! They also have a private parking lot next to the restaurant with a security guard watching over the parking lot, etc. Patio Area is really cool but can be a little noisy with the street traffic. All steaks are cut in house, really unique but that is what makes this Restaurant a step ahead of their competition. Artichoke Heart Stuffed Caps-Phenomenal! It's been open only a couple of weeks, but Buffalo Block has taken its location on Montana Avenue as an opportunity to create an elegant, yet welcoming restaurant. There's outdoor seating for when the weather cooperates including a fire pit that may be a welcome spot to wait on a cool day. From the outside, with the brick and iron fence with the dinner menu displayed as enticement, to the inside, with its skylights, dark wood and warm atmosphere, Buffalo Block matches that vibe with spectacular service and food. I started with a cup of the french onion soup. It came in the cutest small cast iron pot with lid, and overflowed with cheese and caramelized onion. The broth, the base ingredient, was bland, missing that ever so slight acidic flavor. After the requisite "how is it?" and my not-so-requisite reply, the manager (who happened to be tending bar), provided me a second serving where the broth, although improved with more depth in flavor, wasn't quite there. That they went out of their way to make that adjustment and send another serving, was impressive. The steak, a small filet, classically presented, cooked beautifully, had a smoky sear. It was tender enough to barely require a knife. Like many places in this category of restaurant, the entree is served alone. Any accompaniments are ala carte. I rather prefer that, as it ensures I don't overwhelm my taste buds in advance of the main event. Buffalo Block is a special occasion spot, catering to that market, with price points not for the faint-of-heart, at least on the entree dinner menu. The service is attentive but not overbearing. Fantastic steakhouse in the heart of downtown Billings, MT! Food: Great, woodfire and locally sourced steaks. Had the Chef's 3 course meal and the night's featured drink (Oaxaca Old-Fashioned). Appetizer was the braised pork with grilled peach and feta cheese. Tender and tasty. Main dish was a 24oz porter house with fire-roasted veggies and potatoes with a balsamic vinegar reduction. Great steak and complements. Dessert was their banana pudding which was beautifully presented and balanced. Ambiance: Fancy, leather upholstered in the inside. I really wanted to love Buffalo Block Prime Steakhouse, but as of right now, I'm just not there yet. The main reason was our server's mask. I noticed right away that she was wearing a different mask than the other servers. Her mask style was pointed at the nose, and the way it was fitted created a large gape from her face which left her nose completely uncovered the entire time we dined at the restaurant. I never saw her adjust the mask to cover her nose either - she just left it as is which definitely made me feel uncomfortable but I didn't feel like I could say anything. I would have expected a restaraunt like BBPS to address it themselves though. It was clear to me that her mask was not acceptable. All of the other servers' masks appeared to be secured to their faces so I would say for the most part the restaurant is doing a good job with COVID precautions, but when that is not the case, management needs to tell their employees to adjust their masks if they don't fit correctly. The restaurant had plexiglass on top of the booth seating between booths which was nice. There were also a number of empty tables but I'm not sure if this was due to how they're spacing the seating or if we just caught them on a slow night. The reason for our visit was a special occasion - it was mom's birthday. We mentioned this in the reservation, but it was not addressed by our waitress so I'm not sure if she was told. I would have told her myself but my mom never left the table so we didn't get an opportunity to secretly let the waitress know. It wasn't a big deal though because my mom had already ordered her own Baskin & Robbins Ice Cream Cake which we picked up on the way home. It's also possible that the restaurant doesn't do anything for birthdays so it could have been a nonissue either way. I will say that the food was very good, although I didn't indulge and get a steak like I would have liked because I was trying to keep the bill down since there was four of us that way my mom could get whatever she wanted (and I was also trying to be a little healthier because I had a burger elsewhere two days in a row prior - whoops!). My mom loved her steak, although I don't recall which one she got. I'm sure they're all amazing though. I started with the lobster bisque which came in the cutest Staub mini cast iron dutch oven and was delicious. For my main dish, I ordered the full sized Rex House Salad. I didn't add any protein, but I might have if the waitress had said steak was an option. If I recall correctly, she had just said shrimp or chicken and maybe one other option that I forget. I think my dad got a seafood main dish, and I don't remember what my sister ordered. I do remember that we were all happy with our choices. We also as a table ordered the Brussels sprouts (which were on special) because 3/4 of us love Brussels sprouts. They weren't as crispy as I prefer though so I don't know that I'd get them again. My mom also ordered the truffle fries which I may or may not have sampled. And for drinks, the birthday girl got one of their fancy mocktails, my sister and I got aperol spritzes, and my dad got an old fashioned. I don't live in the area, but next time I visit my parents post-pandemic I will give this restaurant another go because I'm sure it's a wonderful place, and I definitely want to try a steak next time or maybe their burger which also sounds delicious. read more

Do not skip coming here if you are wanting a good meal in Billings. I almost never go to Steakhouses. I can duplicate most of the food of the standard Ruth's Chris or Flemings too easily. However, when in Billings, how can I not go to a place that claims so many good things. Plus, isn't this area beef central. Although I saw a beautiful inside exists, the weather was perfect to dine on the patio. It's a very large, well spaced out, patio. In these days of COVID, it was the obvious choice. The wife and I loved some of the old classics. That started with the cocktails. Mine was an well balanced Aviation. We followed it with their nice play on Escargot in garlic butter. They added cheese. It worked. Who would have guessed. The French onion soup had a real depth of flavor, enough onions, and lots of melty cheese. We both went with the prime rib. That's thorny territory. It's almost universally overcooked for us. We ask for rare, and hope for medium or better. Here they did something we never see. It came out looking medium, but as soon as we cut into it the meat was reasonably rare. Rare enough that it was pushing how rare I actually did want it. It was very tasty. The creamy horseradish could have been a little stronger, but that's a nit. They have an excellent wine program, It has a number of boutique CA wines that would be at home on a list in Napa valley, but not in Billings. The pricing was very fair. We were fortunate that we came early on a Friday and got more time visiting with Mitch, the GM, about the restaurant and the wine program than we would get when things get busy. I used to really like this place, but something has gone wrong. After talking this place up no end, from food to service to drinks to even the urinals, I took my friend who never gets to eat steak, let alone exceptional steak, because his wife is a pescatarian to Buffalo Block. The best steak you will ever have, I said. Well, the service remains excellent and professional, that must be said. We had three different types of steak. At first I thought that butter aging must take flavor out of a steak, since mine was both flavorless in the beef aspect, and also with zero seasoning, like maybe salt or something? There was a seasoned butter pat on top, but it tastes essentially of nothing. I didn't say anything, and we passed around our plates and each tried all three steaks. The critique of all three steaks was exactly the same from all three of us. Flavorless flesh. A rotisserie chicken breast from Costco has more going for it. Then the sides. More than $20 for lobster Mac and cheese. Ok, it's got lobster, so why not, we're being luxurious? Except there was no discernible lobster flesh, no lobster essence, no lobster flavor. No lobster anything. And it was more of a pile of noodles sitting on top of a loose cheesy liquid. So watery that all the cheese just sloughed off the top layers of noodles. The broccolini was ok, a little on the raw side of crunchy, but passable. We all agreed that the mashed potatoes were the best thing on the table. The other three sides were unremarkable, and the bernaise sauce was as more of a thickened miracle whip than anything else. The drinks were nice. I'd do those again. But after more than $500 for dinner for three people, we were all left feeling like we'd been willingly robbed, but softly and with a smile. My friend refused to let me pay for his food, stating that he wasn't going to add insult to injury. Instead of staying for our nightcap and dessert, we headed out to Walkers, which I will try next time for a special occasion dinner. I'm so glad we weren't celebrating anything except an opportunity to be together, or this would have made me a lot more angry. But at the end of the day, it is about the quality of the product, and in this instance the rib eye was a bit overcooked (maybe ok, i guess not a deal breaker) but it was lukewarm at best and the cut seemed substandard. Honestly, if I'm going spend $70 on a steak in Montana, my expectations are pretty high. In addition, the two sides I ordered were a washout, as the fingerling potatoes were "chewy", which was weird.
