Through every rack it is clear that the folks at Buffalo Exchange are thoughtfully stocking their store with trendy and well maintained items. The excitement starts from the exterior with colorful murals and painted sidewalks that "keep Austin weird", which we know means wonderful and artistic. I had so much fun thrifting here, it was easy to build outfits because of the way the staff curates their wares. The staff was very kind to let me leave my drink at the counter while I shopped since food/drinks are not allowed. The music had fun throwbacks playing making the experience 5 stars all around. Came here to sell some clothes and it's hit or miss if they'll purchase even if the clothes are brand new or in good condition. I like that they have an online system to check in so that cuts down on wait time. If you're into vintage clothing and shoes, this is a good spot to check out, although parking out front is limited (parking in back available). One of the draws that should bring you here is the fact that there are 3 other businesses within the immediate area of similar persuasion. You have the Leopard Lounge next door which also features vintage clothing and across the street you'll find Out of the Closet Thrift store. Around the corner you'll find Lo-Fi, which is also a clothing store. This place caters almost exclusively to clothing, shoes, accessories and to a lesser degree, jewelry. They do take walk-ins when it comes to them purchasing your vintage clothing items, unlike the leopard lounge next-door. Keep in mind, you're probably not gonna get nearly as much as you think you will (I know we didn't). They'll offer you a cash or store credit option. It's also very likely you may be waiting in line to be seen, but they have some chairs by the entrance. If you find something you like, they have lots of dressing rooms to try things on. Austin is lucky to have such a nice Buffalo Exchange. My wife likes to stop by clothing consignment shops when we are traveling, and this Austin location is one of the better Buffalo Exchanges we have been to. It is very large inside, providing shoppers elbow room to go through the various items at their leisure. It is also well organized, with racks dedicated to both men's and women's clothing. Old, worn T-shirts were big here, but one can find designer brands for decent prices. They seemed well-staffed (checkout, trade-ins, and dressing rooms had dedicated people). Found a nice Vince men's sweater. There are also plenty of comfortable chairs and benches for companions to wait. It was comfortable inside and wasn't musty at all. Service was horrible. The receptionist did not explain how the process of exchanging/selling my items was like and they took my clothes without letting me review what was taken. So I don't know what clothes they took for me and when asked to see what clothes they took they couldn't find my items. When I went to cash out from what I sold I was not told if I wanted the money in cash or added to my purchase. So the guy added it to my purchase without my consent. Buffalo Exchange is a nationwide clothing resale chain, but this is the only location in Austin. Its proximity to the University of Texas means that most of their clientele is college-age, but that group is augmented by older teen and just-out-of-college age customers, as well. My two have been buying and selling their hipster-wear here since high school and through their college years. Only funky-looking stuff will do for anyone who wants to be an original, and Buffalo Exchange complies. As some reviewers have noted, their inventory might not be exactly what you'd expect. Teen/young adult clothing tastes change rapidly, and their buying behavior is what drives the inventory here. A purchaser has said more than once, "These are/are not selling well right now." So keep that in mind if you're planning to bring in a pile of clothes to sell. You'll get more in store credit than cash, because they want you to turn around and buy more stuff. I award this Buffalo location 3-1/2 stars. If you're over 25, you will probably want to pick another thrift store in Austin. Their Coronavirus Times protocol is listed on their website, so please check before heading over to shop. You have to make an appointment to sell, and you can't stand there anymore while they go through your things. Currently, protective masks and appropriate distancing are required for everyone, both staff and customers. There were quite a few customers shopping last week, and fewer on the weekend when it was raining. Most arrive on foot, since they no doubt live nearby, and parking is very limited. Ok, there are so many reviewers here who have their feelings hurt because the buy counter at Buffalo Exchange "didn't know how much a Tommy Bahama shirt cost" and didn't want to give them much money for their items. Unless you are actively knowledgeable about brands and trends, just keep in mind that usually your clothes are not as "nice" as you think. I'm a fashion reseller, and I know my brands. I've found, and continue to find, SO MANY AMAZING things that are extremely sought after and expensive (not the Buffalo price, but the original retail price is extremely high). Tommy Bahama is neither a "nice" brand or a trendy brand. Soooo why would they buy it from you? And if they only offer to give you $9 for a faux leather jacket, that's because they know that someone will buy it for no more than around $18. Anyway, I highly recommend Buffalo Exchange Austin. I've been selling to this Buffalo since I was in high school. it's been at least 8 years. Today I sold 2 pairs of brand new Steve Madden's valued at $100 each for a whopping total of $17. I'm extremely disappointed and will not be returning to sell as I regret deeply letting those shoes go. I probably could've made more at Pavement. I had a terrible experience. Brought in a designer dress that retails for $500 along with other items. They gave me $10 for "a dress" but said they forgot the brand of it and that it was probably fast fashion. I agreed based on that information, went home, and realized they had actually paid me $10 for the $500 designer item. Called to ask for it back and they told me they were retailing it for $30 if I wanted to buy it from them but refused to return it to me. They are supposed to offer 50% of the retail price as store credit but offered me way less, apparently (because they were selling it for $30 but only gave me $10). I was so pleased with my experience at Buffalo Exchange! I came in on a Saturday for the first time to sell some clothes and shop. They were very busy and I hadn't thought to make an appointment ahead of time, but they still got to me promptly. Everyone behind the counter was friendly and made sure I understood the selling process since it was my first time. I shopped around while they went through my clothes and thought the selection was decent- it probably would have been less picked over on a weekday. They went through my clothes quickly and I got my payout. Having worked in resale before, I felt their selection and payout were very fair compared with other similar stores. My experiences here are pretty mixed. Service is usually great. I'll sell my clothes here time to time, and some days they'll take almost everything, then other days they won't take anything at all. They look for certain styles, and that changes as seasons change. It's been hit or miss for me. What I do appreciate about Buffalo is the fact they even have a buy back program. They believe in recycling and reusing, as do I. When they accept an item, you have the option to receive store credit, or cash, or both. Store credit is 50% of what they will sell it for, and cash is at 30%. I've only opted for the in store credit because I'll usually come back and find something useful. When I do want to buy clothes or shoes, they will usually have something interesting. There is parking in front of the store, but in order to get out, you'll have to back out on to Guad pretty quickly. There's more parking in the back though. Take 29th street and turn right on to the first alley. read more

This place is great if you are a super hipster college student. The buyers are the worst, super picky and have no idea what is name brand and apparently their eyes don't function correctly to tell the difference between brand new clothes and crappy homeless stuff. I tried to sell stuff here, no way in hell would I even think of going through their racks because it smells and is atrocious. The buyers here clearly shop at the store and are into ugly articles of clothing that don't match. The buying price is better than other consignment stores, but that's only if they buy anything from you.... The fact that I'm out of college and have legit work clothes not torn skinny jeans and ugly shirts they didn't buy a single thing that I had to sell. I brought 3 giant trash bags full of clothes, most with tags still attached to them. I had a ton of denim jean shorts as well and I was told that it wasn't the season for shorts. We live in Texas... how is that even possible. The buyer I had quit looking at the clothes half way through. If you are going to come to work stoned out of your mind at least look like you are trying when there is someone standing directly in front of you. She didn't even unfold the clothes to look at the items. I should have known at that moment this was a trip doomed for failure. At any rate, they buyers here are looking for used crappy clothes. My friend also brought in a giant tub of clothes and shoes. Out of the two of us with at least 500 items, they bought nothing. What a giant waste of your time to sell anything to this place. You are better off donating and taking the tax refund on it. I'm sure shopping at Goodwill is a giant step up from this location. Good luck and try not to get bit up by bugs. Over the weekend I visited the buffalo exchange in Guadalupe twice. Once to purchase and once to make a return. I'm new to "Austin thrifting", so a return was likely. During my first visit I was greeted with a great attitude by the associates and one retail associate even offered to start a fitting room for me because I was carrying so much stuff. This was so helpful! I returned a hat the next day...simply because I felt like it was too big. I arrive only 15 mins before closing time on a Friday so I expected the typical tired employee to take care of me. Instead, Kat at the register greeted me with the best attitude! She had to add me to the system because I had never shopped with buffalo exchange before, and explained how in the future I could buy or sell. She was friendly and all of the associates had a fun vibe amongst themselves (I even witnessed the staff members congratulating another associate on her promotion, too, which I thought was so cool.) Overall the great music and great atmosphere definitely makes for a great shopping experience! I will FOR SURE be back to this location and can't wait to find more cool stuff the next time I visit buffalo exchange! read more

This review is for their clothing buying area....I haven't ever actually shopped here...it kind of seems like a Goodwill but with not-Goodwill prices. Anyway...I love it that they want to buy things from me! ha. It's a good idea for me to clean out my closet about once every other month to keeps things in check. The last couple of times I've done so I brought the majority of what I cleaned out here and they bought most everything. The things to keep in mind are that if shoes or whatever need to be cleaned off, do it before you get here...they're only going to buy things that they can throw right up on the shelf/rack. Also, I think it was a 60 day period that they said they buy for. If they can't sell the item within the 60 days because of the season, they won't buy it, even if it's amazing. So don't try taking sweaters in the summer or shorts in the winter if you want to get rid of them for some cash. The people working this area are on their game. They move quickly so don't let the long line of people sitting with huge tubs scare you off. I've never waited longer than 15 minutes to be helped. They go through one item at a time with the supervisor there to answer any questions. You can tell they do a thorough job of training the buyers. They know what shapes of shirts to look for, etc, for the current trends. read more

This is one of my favorite places to shop for clothes, costumes and gifts - the selection is great and constantly changes. Don't be disheartened if they don't take the clothes you sell; the buyers are extremely picky and selective for a reason - they look for quality, condition and keep current trends and the time of year in mind. They also provide an option to donate any items you don't want, so there's no harm in cleaning out your closet and seeing if you can scavenge a few bucks for any old or unworn items in your wardrobe. It's not uncommon to find a great pair of designer jeans for a dramatically discounted price at Buffalo Exchange - I've purchased Seven, True Religion, Paige and Rock & Republic brand jeans there for under $50 a pair, sometimes well under that amount. They also buy back unique, vintage t-shirts and dresses if you want pieces with personality that no one else will have. Their accessory selection is also great - Buffalo has a vast variety of scarves, bags, hats, jewelry and eyewear - I get a lot of gifts for friends and family for reasonable prices from their accessory wall. Also ideal for costumes. For the most part, the staff is pretty nice. Some folks are surlier than others, but once my cashier forgot to ring up a pair of sunglasses I wanted to buy and he gave me $5 off my entire purchase just for being honest! Be sure to be patient when perusing through the racks because you can really find some great treasures if you take the time to look and try things on. Also bring your own shopping bag or backpack. If you forgo carrying away your purchases in a plastic shopping bag, the store makes a small donation to one of 3 local charities that you can choose from.
