Seller beware...I came here with a suitcase filled with great items, only to be told by a rude employee that you now need an appointment to sell items here. I understand the need to limit the amount of sellers at one time, however many of Buffalo's competitors (Crossroads & Beacon's Closet) do not require a scheduled appointment. Fine...if y'all are too busy, I'll take my items to the Crossroads Trading Company literally 1 block away, where no appointment is required. The folks at Crossroads are much kinder anyway. read more

Big selection but I found the prices way too high, generally. I guess it's one of those places you just have to come and cross your fingers that you'll find what you're looking for or come across a hidden gem. I did not find any. But it look like a lot of people dead because the line to check out was quite long. I have not been thrifting in New York in many years and remember the selection was a lot better back then. We're talking like 20 years ago - that's a while. I live in South Florida now and I find the selection and prices for thrifted clothing is much better. The Tampa area also has excellent thrifting . I wish I looked at these reviews before I sent away 2 bags of my clothes. I used their send-in option to get rid of quite a bit of perfect condition clothing. All brands they said they accepted/preferred. I cleaned and inspected each piece before putting in the bag. They came back with $0. I asked for a further explanation they said that the clothes "weren't on trend, despite being designers that they prefer. And "Our shoppers are typically looking for styles and trends that they're seeing in stores right now, such as athletic leggings with mesh cut-outs, oversized thick knit sweaters and cropped cardigans, blouses and dresses made from natural fibers such as cotton and linen, and t-shirts with a more boxy fit." I wouldn't have sold $100's of clothes to them! My bags were stuffed-to-the-brim with barely if at all worn clothing. To say 0 was accepted, I'M ABSOLUTELY convinced is a lie. I just wish I would have taken photos. And not sent in 2 bags! UGH... read more

This particular Buffalo Exchange is special. It's located in the Fashion district so there are a lot of NEW, barely worn & interesting pieces. This isn't your typical cheap thrift store where you have to find something cool. Almost everything is cool, it just depends on your style or decision to buy items. I still haven't mastered selling . The best thing to do is call and ask what they are currently buying. Ask them to be specific! It's February 19, 2020. They are buying... -baby doll dresses -high waisted pants with a cool bottom (Ex. Flare etc.) -cool items (brands don't matter more than style here.) -sneakers Apparently skirts don't sell that well in this location. But also apparently all my clothes don't sell well in this location . Pro tip: items with tickets sell better from my experience. Pro tip 2: don't rush coming to sell. I waited about 15 minutes in line because everyone is trying to sell. First time coming to newyork and I wanted to thrift so I went crawling to all the places to get some fun item. I don't know it's it's pickers or something but this place had nothing of substance. Maybe I'm more used to consignment and some higher end places that have Veronica beard , Zimmerman etc. but everything is just so so. I think all the workers each have their own style so they consign perosnal likes , and then it makes the store a mixture of fairy core , club items and then r shirts and vintage style items. It has no flow . Not my favorite and felt like a goodwill almost. read more

I like this Buffalo exchange because it's a lot larger and more spacious than the other locations, say for example, the east village location. They have a good range and assortment that's well organized by clothing type as well. It's also in a convenient location in Chelsea that's close to other thrift shops like 2nd street and goodwill! read more

I tend to have more luck here buying than selling but I love that they donate anything that I don't want. This place always has a very eclectic collection of clothes so sometimes I come here when I'm looking for random pieces for a costume. I do also buy other clothes here as well! Something about thrifting in another city makes the whole thrift store experience a little more exciting. Especially in New York where it's fashion capital and sadly pieces of fast fashion are speedily mass produced and churned out only to soon be quickly tossed aside for the next trending item. Regardless, thrifting in NY makes for a great treasure hunt. It's like what Phoebe from Friends says... there's probably an interesting story behind every piece! This store was one of the bigger thrift stores that I perused through during my time in NY. It also had lower prices than some of the others, yet quality was still great and selection was more or less better. Most of the comments review on the customer service and selling. I was lucky enough to come in the early afternoon on a Tuesday so it wasn't jam packed with people or anything. I was able to move around at my discretion, utilize the mirrors, and only had one person in front of me when I waited in line to pay. My advice is that if you're coming to a thrift store, be mentally prepared that you'll probably have to do some digging to find something you like. I ended up finding my new favorite long coat for $15. What a steal. read more

I have been coming to this Buffalo location for years & it's honestly gotten so bad -- most of the clothes are cheap, Shein type stuff / dropshipping brands. A dozen of the same cheap (and not cute) shirt or dress. The staff are always really nice though and they have a good selection of accessories, but the clothes just suck. Went for the first time today, while coming in the security guard opened the door for me which I thought was so nice! The line was a little long but moved quickly. Tayla was my buyer and was so nice! She explained the selection process to me and the other buyers (Jill and a guy with black curly hair, freckles wearing a cool eclectic belt whose name I did not get) were such great chats while sorting through clothes. Although they did not take as much as I would have hoped (Tayla was very kind explaining why) I had a great experience. Seems they lean more towards a grungy/edgy style items from what I could gather. Everyone I spoke to was very kind and polite, they definitely care about style and quality which is great for customers. Will definitely go back! read more

This is my least favorite Buffalo Exchange in NYC. They literally never have anything good, from shoes to pants and especially shirts. In terms of selling here, they seem to prioritize looks over quality, so they'll hand back perfectly good Levi's jeans and $400 vintage boots and instead take a Shein shirt that someone cut into a bad crop top. If you're a seller, don't even bother coming here, go to the one in Brooklyn off the L train. If you're a buyer, don't expect anything good from this store; it's 99% cheap trash that they're marking up for $30. I honestly don't know how this location is still in business or how its management hasn't gotten turned over yet. read more

I was surprised that the Buffalo exchange purchase a number for a things that I was ready to bring to the Salvation Army. I needed a few extra dollars and found them in cleaning out my closet. The things I brought there were crowding my closet and I just about never wore them. I know now they'll be recycled and I have an extra few dollars in my pocket. I have been coming to Buffalo Exchange for years. This is the first one I fell in love with and I have since been to almost every location in the country (I travel for work, never for a BE road trip.. as tempting as that sounds). Buffalo Exchange is my place to get designer goods for a fraction of the price. It's sustainable, and it's quality. You never know what you're going to find. I have purchased Tod's, Marc Jacobs, Apiece Apart, Milly, Rebecca Taylor, D&G, and countless great brands here. The prices are extremely affordable when compared to retail, and usually cheaper than online resale stores. Pricing can be a little inconsistent, which likely depends on the buyer who's purchasing your items. I generally find Crossroads to be better on pricing and sales. In general, employees at BE can be a little snooty, but I think it's slightly better than it was a few years ago. This location can get really busy to the point where it's a little overwhelming/tight when sifting through the racks. I love that they have expanded the store in the past 2 years. I have only sold to this location once and it was several years ago, so I don't feel I can give that an honest review. All factors considered, I would be giving this location 4* however, the last time I was there (end of Jan 2020), the quality of the merch has gone downhill from what I'm used to. Significantly. The thing that bothered me the most was that the store was filled with new, cheap, fast fashion garbage purchased wholesale. That's absolutely not what the store is about and I find it deceiving to call yourself a business built on sustainability and then buy fast fashion garbage at wholesale. BE has always done this, but the last time I was at this store, about 20% of their clothing appeared to be this crap. There has never been this much garbage. Additionally, there were significantly less quality/high end brands than normal and a lot of cheaper brands that this location wouldn't normally accept. It was the first time I EVER left this location empty handed. With racks so full that they're hard to look through, a great location in NYC, and stylish people lined up to sell their clothing...I don't think they're hurting for quality inventory. I hope this location (and others if they've gotten this bad) can get back to their roots of promoting sustainability and stop passing off garbage purchased new as being a sustainable option. read more

You do not have any voice in what happens. Terrible. And then they can tell you how they will pay you. Or keep you some purchase prices when (and if) you can eventually make a purchase in the store. Though their website says they buy clothes open to close every day I showed up hours before closing to be told they were "no longer buying today." So I didn't use a store credit to shop I just left with my clothes. If you need an appointment just say that, don't make me haul my clothes across the neighborhood. My first and last time here. Since I'm not trying things on in-store, I took home this Our Legacy shirt from Buffalo Exchange. Surprise! The cuff is shredded. See pic. Did the tag say "as is"? Nope. When I've had issues with damaged items, the Buffalo people usually tell me "everything we sell is as is". But seriously. Why would Buffalo accept something so damaged that repairs may not be possible? If you're asking why I'm not returning the shirt, it's because I removed the tag before I tried it on. I've only ever been to the Astoria location and this place exceeds that one, especially due to the size. The fact that they can just hold more items, makes it already a better shopping experience, but the racks are also better spaced out and you don't feel smacked into corners constantly. The staff at the fitting room and registers were nice. On the floor they were a bit more stand-offish. No one comes up to say hello and there was definite eye contact avoidance. I get it, I've worked retail, some days you just *can't* with customers, but the fact that it was everyone on the floor I came across tells me it might be more than just the kind of day. I ended up walking out with a few sweaters- something I'm terrible at buying, so I was happy to have these new and gently used garments to cozy up to. As always, bring a bag! read more

Not a good time to go....if your selling. they are heavily inventoried- I saw about fifty boxes at the selling tables and the store is already fully stocked with merchandise, looks like wholesale merchandise-not one of a kind things... They only bought three things from me - when I brought in two big bags. Lines were super long for sellers, and everything was just hectic in there for buyers. Don't expect any high evaluation of your stuff, and don't expect to find many great deals. The buyer that helped me out kept asking her coworkers what do you think of this, and eventually another guy stepped in. They were talking about my items like I wasn't there, and I didn't like how they handled the sale. I like to go with no expectations and see what I can find--I often luck out and get some great finds! Selling: I've sold for many years and I always say I won't come back, but I do, and I shouldn't. I recently tried my hand at selling and I thought I had some really good items, but unfortunately, most of them were rejected. The feedback was interesting ie a designer dress was "too specific" (isn't that the point of thrifting, to find unique items?), on the contrary, timeless items like stilettos were "not on trend" and shirts I had barely worn apparently had too much wear. I used to be able to pick out cute pairs of staple shoes for little as $15-20 here. Now it's easily $25-35, and as much as $50 for vintage condition Ferragamo loafers, and even more for bigger name brands. Skimmed through the racks and nothing in particular was calling my name. Waiting lines to sell are as long as 10 people, even at 11AM on a day such as Friday. It isn't worth the struggle unless you don't know where your next meal is coming from (no judgement). The biggest buffalo exchange in the city! They bought a ton of my clothes and had so many great options for sale as well. They had tons of band T-shirts for sale and some fun Hawaiian shirts as well. You can tell they try to keep on-trend items in stock. When selling clothes just be sure to catch if they don't know a brand. For example, one of my $400 dresses they were trying to pay me $16 for, so I knew they just didn't recognize the designer. It's best to sell expensive designer items online! read more

Buffalo Exchange sold me a pair of jeans without a zipper or buttons, and some weird stitching in place of a top button. Because I don't try items on in-store -- I stopped during the pandemic -- I didn't see until I got them home. Why would Buffalo Exchange accept these from a seller? How did these jeans make it to the sales floor? Why not label them "as is" or warn customers that the item's defective? The staff is apathetic at best, intentionally unhelpful at worst. The prices they pay for sold clothing isn't worth the trip. If you have a hundred items, they'll purchase two of them for like three dollars. They make you take everything else to donate it on your own. You're better off just taking the items to a better shop, or directly to a shelter. They do not offer shopping bags, so if you do find something worth purchasing, bring your own bags. I have been an online seller for about 15 years. I know my way around fashion and am very good at buying and selling. I recently went back to work remotely, and Between that and caring for my 3 year old, I don't have much time for selling. I decided to send my good items out to Buffalo Exchange in order to clear out excess inventory and to make a few bucks. I sent REALLY good stuff. One was a nwt pair of anthropologie wide leg pants with a $199 price tag. They just emailed me that they accepted none of my items and donated them to charity. This is absolutely a scam. Also recently, after I had shipped away all these clothes, they sent out an email that they are experiencing financial hardship and not doing mail in anymore...they will steal from people.
