Can't handle complaints and returns. Service is standard, nice and quick when dealing with standard sale and buying. The first time I went there I was treated nicely, kindly, quickly and the business jacket I bought for only dollars is now one of my best work attires in winter. Now, however for me too unprofessional maybe because I went in there with good intentions but with a concern and problem about a winter coat I bought but resulted useless for winter (considering the thickness of the material). I am in a budget so made sure to comply with no wearing the garment before and return it with what it came: a label since I did not get a receipt nor a bag. I was disappointed to realize now and in this situation that they have a one track mind; become offensive and hide behind rules with absolutely no flexibility for exceptions and legitimate mistakes they made in the process: they never gave me a receipt and thus could not comply with their rules. In there they commit unfair practice to not lose a dollar. And lady, you did not have to call the police but I thank you Mr. and Mrs. Policemen for treating me fair and allowing me the option to use my debit card statement. I gave them back the jacket though. They can keep the money; it represents a demeaning treatment and a huge disappointment. I won't go back if you pay me. I apologized but I am still convinced that you are at least unprofessional and don't realize that the client puts bread on your and your employees' tables. Checking yelp made me a little anxious to come in, but all in all it was a great experience. I find it curious that so many people had a bad experience selling clothes, but the buyer I dealt with was very nice. Now does that mean she took every piece of clothing I brought in? No. I think people may get offended that the buyers here don't take all their clothing, but the staff are not concerned with what YOU feel THEIR taste is- some people don't seem to get that. I normally don't have much of a problem with this store but I found a necklace I wanted and was carrying it around while I looked at clothes. When I went to purchase it, the tag for the price had fallen off and I told the girl what the price was. She went to another co-worker to ask what to do and she made up a new price, higher than what it was. My friend walked over to where we had been standing and found the original tag (labeled jewelry and with the price we stated it was). They talked it over with the manager and she came back with, "My manager thinks it's worth the higher price. Take it or leave it." The British Witch strikes again! I wasn't upset that she didn't take any of my stuff, it's the way she internally pissed on everything I had and straight up judged me as soon as a walked in. As soon as she saw one Lacoste polo, she gave me a disgusted look and laughed off "No one buys polos anymore". I get it, they have a certain fashion and early 2000s preppy most likely isn't it. I didn't care, I just needed to get rid of some old stuff. But the way she treated me as if to say "You're kind doesn't belong here" was very off putting. Everyone should avoid Buffalo Exchange at all costs. Not only are they a big corporation posing as a neighborhood consignment store (closing up other mom & pops along the way), but they underpay sellers, overcharge buyers, and are just plain rude. I consign clothing professionally as part of my organizing business, and never have I experience such terse, chaotic, and completely inefficient customer service. I'm in the store at least once every few weeks, yet every time I come in it's as if they never saw me before and treat me like a number. Is it so hard to add a humanistic component to running a store? Apparently so if you're a corporate cookie cutter store like this one. When they say Go Local, this one is DEFINITELY NOT INCLUDED. I really want to like this place but I have to say that I'm underwhelmed by it. The clothing selection is kind of blasé. I always go in hoping I'll find something fantastic but always leave kind of disappointed. With that being said, for the most part, the staff is nice and they did come in handy one day when I was on my way to an event and my bag broke while I was in Davis Square. The woman with the English accent is so rude! I have had a few encounters with her and they are always negative! Clearly, I wasn't just catching her on a bad day. She is always rude! Most recently, the computers were down yesterday so I called ahead to make sure the computers were working so I didn't waste my time going across town. After explaining the situation, her response was "Who is this?". Surprised I responded "excuse me?". In an even more rude tone, she responded "WHO IS THIS?". I don't know what kind of subjective 'style' these people have, but they took my trashiest things (other than a literally brand new pair of hudson jeans) and passed by very high quality items. I was shocked. 3. I usually sell my stuff on eBay, but thought I'd try this place. It's a joke unless you have very edgy style, like lots of piercings and tattoos. Had brand new clothes from this summer - some still with tags on them, some designer - that I had to sell because I lost 40 pounds and because I'm moving, but it was all apparently "too dated" for this particular store's clientele. Yeah, be sure to make lots of room for all those manky old t-shirts, but my new down London Fog parka can just go in the trash. It's startling to be told to take quality clothes to Goodwill to donate because it's not good enough for a store filled with what looks like garbage. Just had the most terrible experience here. I was trying to sell some clothes and the "buyer" went out of her way to make me feel unwanted in the store. (I felt like pretty woman in that scene...). She didn't buy my clothes which was fine, it's just the attitude she gave me when she denied me, it was AWFUL. I've sold items here before and the staff has been extremely friendly and accommodating (even when they don't buy my stuff). She seriously needs to work on her people skills , she had somewhat curly hair, and a tattoo on her right forearm that said something about art and the spirit. read more

I'm doing some downsizing/spring cleaning and have been to this store a few too many times in the last week. I've never been interested in buying anything here, just selling some things I don't love enough to keep. Here are a few of my observations: -Go in with the expectation that they might take nothing. Then you'll be happy if they take even one thing from your pile. Either way, you didn't want it, and any $$ they give you for your discards is better than nothing. Plus, you will now have more storage space and funds for something you like more! Definitely do NOT take it personally if they don't take anything. -Wait time to sell could be anywhere between 5 minutes to 30. I've never waited more than half an hour to sell, and it's really hard to predict when it's going to busy. The employees will tell you that usually weekends are busy, but the longest I've waited was on a Thursday afternoon. That was because one person had 2 moving boxes full of clothes. -They are more lenient with quality/condition for non-clothing. With clothes, the tiniest stain and they won't take it. However, I brought in some old bags and they took it even though they obviously had signs of wear. Probably because BE gets more clothes than accessories. Relatively speaking, based on what I originally paid and what BE prices the items they want, I get more back for my accessories (jewelry, small handbags) than for my skirts/dresses/tops. Cannot speak for shoes because I haven't brought any in. -It's impossible to predict what the buyer will price each item, or why she (all the employees I've seen here are female) will or will not take a particular item. I sometimes ask why she priced a certain item higher/lower than another item, or why she decided to take one item and not another, but honestly it seems pretty arbitrary. They just say "current styles in really good condition" but that can mean different things for different people. -Don't quote me on this, but from my personal experience/observations, you are more likely to successfully sell your casual/trendy items here as opposed to higher end classic pieces. They were more happy with my Wet Seal/H&M jersey tops/skirts than they were with my Express/Banana Republic business-type wear. This works out for me because most of the items I'm trying to remove from my wardrobe are casual/kiddy(?) apparel from college. A supershort ruffle skirt from Abercrombie&Fitch is no longer worth the closet space for a grad student, but BE was happy to take it. -This figure may or may not be useful, but I've brought in 3 full Urban Outfitters bags (the 'regular' medium sized one that looks the most horizontal) of clothes and small accessories in the last week and have gotten about $80 cash for everything they took, which was maybe 1/3 to 1/2 of each bag. I don't know if this is typical, it really depends on what you bring in, and like I said, I think BE was just looking for the types of items I was hoping to liquidate. -The large bin of donations next to the sell counter is NOT donations to BE. They periodically wheel that bin to Goodwill a few stores down. -Every single employee I've encountered here is pleasant, even when they're rejecting an item that I totally thought they'd want. They greet you when you walk in, make small talk with you while they're inspecting your goodies, and thank you for coming in. read more

This review is for selling clothes. Before going to the store, like they recommend on their website, I called to find out what kind of clothes they are currently looking for. The friendly lady who answered said "anything!" I said "really" - "you mean, it doesn't even matter what season?" "No - anything!" If you call and have this exchange--it is, as common sense may suggest--simply not true. I took a bag full of clothes, waited about 20 minutes in line, and then was told that they would take nothing. They said that the clothes were in good condition but they were basically only looking for things from the most recent (fashion) season. Had I been told this on the phone--my time would not be wasted. I was told that the second time you come, you usually have better luck (now that you are given the information that they should have given you over the phone). There will be no second time for me. I have bought a few things from BE as well as tried to sell my clothing to them. My buying experience was mediocre - the clothes were worn or just plain weird. However, the prices were not so bad. Hence the two stars instead of one. Now for trying to sell your clothes to BE: I brought bags and bags of clothing on two separate occasions. Most of it was barely worn - I was cleaning my closet out of clothes that I bought for some reason and then never wore. Both times the person looking at my items was the blonde woman (I believe, the store manager). She was definitely unpleasant to deal with. She went through all 5+ paper bags I brought and did NOT accept a SINGLE thing (both times I came in). Again, I did not bring trash - some pieces still had tags on them and were from Forever21, GAP, and other stores.The store manager was condescending and when I asked what I should do with my 5 bags of clothes, she said that the Goodwill store is next door. Mind you, I dragged these bags on commuter rail and then the T from Wellesley. So I decided to be magnanimous and donated half of my stuff to Goodwill. Never bringing any of my things to BE again, just not worth it. read more

Warning about the Somerville, MA BE store (if not the chain): They'll tell you they want accept clothing over size 40 ("Oh yes we do, there's a market for that!"), but when you lug perfect-condition stylish clothes there, they'll tell you company policy is not to accept clothing over size 40. 1) We called ahead to not waste a trip, 2) The BE website says nothing about this, and 3) We're talking size 42 and 44 here, not usual in America. But the best part was the manager and employees smiling as they they implied it was a misunderstanding on OUR part. Bottom line: The website and store employees won't tell you the truth upfront, but only smaller folk are welcome to buy + sell at Buffalo Exchange. I have never shopped here, but I don't think I ever will. I went to try to sell a few items of clothing because I had some very nice dresses that I had only worn once or twice. I went on a weekday afternoon and waited for about 20 minutes as there was a line to just sell clothes. When I was finally up, the young girl working at the desk did not offer any explanation of their process for choosing clothes. She simply took an item, held it up, handed it back to me, and repeated. With ALL of my almost-new clothes. I could not believe it! It was also really embarrassing because there was a line of people watching this happen, and she didn't offer a word of explanation as to why they wouldn't take anything. I understand that they are running a business and need to be discerning, but it was just really uncomfortable. I think they have a very particular style (I would describe it as extremely hipster verging on costume-y), which I didn't realize before trying to sell my clothes. After reading some of the other reviews on here, though, I am actually really glad they didn't buy anything. I will get more money for these nice clothes elsewhere. read more

Remeber the Seinfeld episode with the Soup Nazi? This place is roughly the fashion equivalent, with bizarre, unwritten rules on what they will and won't accept, and rude, argumentative employees. Buying stuff here is ok--they mix vintage in with everything else, so you have to dodge lots of way overpriced mall-store cast-offs to find anything of quality, but I did find a fabulous vintage dress there today for $12. The selling experience is another story. As other posters mentioned, they need to be more specific on their website of what they are looking for. Apparently, skirts and pants *with the department store tags attached* are not in season right now. It took forever with only one person ahead of me (I pity the 4 women behind me! this was only 5 minutes after the store opened!), because they were "shortstaffed" and the manager had to keep stopping to ring people up. I can sympathize, but she did not offer one single apology for this. The staff is atrociously rude. The first time I made a purchase here, the girl nearly threw my clothes at me, and rolled her eyes when I asked for a bag. As I was waiting to sell stuff, the manager yelled at an old lady who was buying a coat and asked her a question: "Please don't tell me how to run my business, I am the manager here!" She also yelled at the seller in front of me--English was not his first language, and she got incredibly impatient with him. They did not thank me for my business either when I bought stuff or sold stuff. There are PLENTY of really good consignment shops in the area--local businesses with employees who, while still having the typical "retail attitude" at least say thank you and act like they do appreciate your business. After hearing a few friends recommend bringing my clothes to BE before donating them to Goodwill next door, I decided to give it a shot and brought nearly half a closet worth of nearly new threads to sell. I was actually very surprised at what they bought and did not buy. For instance, I was convinced they would take my slim dress pants and fancy fitted shirts, but they ended up only buying random old band t-shirts, a few casual button-ups, a few pairs of jeans, and some winter hats. Odd, but after shopping around the place with my credit, it is apparent that they are catering to a particular indie style of which most of the clothes I was selling did not fit. I liken the experience to being chosen for a dodgeball team in elementary school gym class. While they were very nice and explained why they picked or rejected an article it was hard to not feel like I was on the fashion firing line. Its too bad (for me) because someone will end up finding all of my other nice stuff at Goodwill next door. Either way, I ended up with a bunch of store credit from clothes that I would have otherwise donated. While the men's section is painfully sparse, I was able to find a great fitted dress shirt with the original $150 price tag on it and only paid $20 from my credit to the store. I still have some credit with them left and am unsure if I will be able to find anything with it, but I can cash out at any time and take half the value of the credit in cash, so its not a big deal. I have a bunch more clothes that I plan to bring here now that I know what they are looking for. Hopefully they make the cut and can be one of the cool kids playing dodgeball. read more

For a vintage/thrift store this place has to much of a "high standers". The employees themselves I don't think realize what they are wearing at times. The employees all act as if they know all the latest about fashion, if only they knew. This place is ridiculous, and lame. I think that the concept of Buffalo Exchange is great, but this location is not. I've been to Buffalo stores before and loved what I bought from there and the experience as a customer. This one? Not so much. I've been living in Boston almost a year now, and my experience here has not improved. I thought it was finally time to say something. Selling: Every time I've been here to sell, the manager with the blonde hair has been rude to me. I haven't seen her here lately. Maybe she's on vacation? But since, I've had the other manager with the british accent and she is so mean and condescending that I don't want to sell here anymore. I've read on yelp that other buyers have been friendly and nice and explained the "buying process" to them, but this woman just schlepped my things into a reject pile with a big sour puss on her face, without giving me any indication of what she actually wanted for the store. Also: I'm not British, but I KNOW you're being condescending when you keep calling me "LOVE!" Buying: When I first got here around June last year, I found lots of amazing stuff. Nicole Miller for $32?! Um, yes! Lots of cool Urban, Gap, Anthropologie, J Crew also. Lately, though, I barely want to shop here anymore. All I see is salvation army stuff, which I think is pretty stupid, because you can walk 2 doors down to the goodwill and get the same stuff for half the price. I am sad that this location hasn't been as good as the other ones I have been to in NYC and CA. But, in the less than a year that I've been here, I must have seen at least 20 employees come and go. I can only guess that there's a problem with the way this store is managed. If they've made ME feel bad, I can't imagine they're very nice to their employees either, and that may be why they can't seem to keep people. Hopefully one day this store will be better. Until then? No appointment necessary to consign is a huge plus, but the actual consigning is nothing short of frustrating. Like others have said, they are EXTREMELY picky about what they take and do not seem to have any rhyme or reason as to why. It seems they market their store toward people who dress alternatively, when people of all ages and styles shop there. I find it very hard to believe not one of my 20 sweaters (all GAP, J CREW, Banana, etc) would not sell given the chance on a rack. The staff at the store does not dress in clothes most consider fashionable and seem to think no one will purchase anything other than a ratty vintage tee shirt. It's actually funny, because they are the opposite of stylish, yet turn away perfectly good clothing that I am sure would sell. (How many teenagers would buy an article of clothing because of the label alone? MANY!). I will not waste my time here again and think its annoying to cater the clothing of your thrift shop to the stereo type of the area rather than having something there for everyone. I would say if you have all preppy, pretty, or more conservative clothing that you don't waste your time here. read more

I have not bought anything here and only sold here twice. I am writing a positive review, not because I made so much money, but because the two buyers I encountered here were SUPER nice and I was really impressed with their service and demeanor. Both times, I had come near closing (once on a weekday, once a weekend) and both times, they treated me well, didn't rush things and gave me pretty good explanations for the things they decided to take and not take (when I questioned it). I think I was just struck with their friendliness which, let's be honest, is rare in our parts. Thus, this positive review. Few things: - They are more likely to take your casual/hip/funky clothes than your nicer work clothes. They took things like my cords/jeans, puma sneaks (never worn), plaid shirts, shirts with prints or interesting details, even my hoodies -- they took stuff from jcrew, h&m, urban, zara, free people, etc. They also took some of my funky rings (they had too many earrings in stock already). And they will obviously be pickier on non-seasonal stuff. I would say save your 'nicer' stuff for other consignment places or ebay if you want more money (they did not take any of my nice business casual pants or tops, and I didn't even bother bringing any of my old suits); this place is more of a good pitstop on your way to goodwill (few doors down) where you would dump your stuff for free anyway. - It's great to receive cash (or store credit) right away even if it's not a lot -- sure, you can get more money at other consignment stores, but that would entail making an appt, waiting for your item to get sold and coming back to pick up money, and only if your item sells. I like the immediate gratification for things that were on their way to the donation bin anyway. read more

I like this B.E. location. I've shopped at Buffalo Exchanges in NYC, Philly, and SF. I shop at a lot of secondhand stores and in the past I've consigned with Second Time Around and Poor Little Rich Girl. I've sold clothing to this location a few times. The stuff they buy from me tends to be nicely made or totally garish and weird. They usually take most of what I bring, and request that I bring even weirder vintage/ costumey stuff. I never make a billion dollars but I do better than when I used those other stores. Buying clothes can be hit or miss. I've gotten some things I truly love. They don't always have something for me. One real miss I got was a wool sweater. When I got it home I realized it was incredibly dirty. Since it was delicate I had to wash it by hand and see just how yucky it was. They bought this sweater from someone who had sold it straight from their laundry pile. Yuck-ola. Since then I have religiously washed everything I bought there. I strongly recommend you do too. The pricing can be really odd sometimes. Really upscale things can be priced way lower than at other secondhand stores. Examples- I had a new pair of Alexander McQueen pants that PLRG had tried to sell for close to $200. BE gave them a price tag of $60. An Anthro dress Second Time Around would have priced over $100, BE priced at $25. I often see Target and Urban Outfitters clothing priced for higher than they originally sold for, which is ridiculous. The earrings are all way overpriced and most of those they offer are not stylish. They once bought a pair of Target earrings from me and put a price of $12 on them, when I'd paid $4 for them in a set of 3 pairs. The inventory is much better quality at this location compared to the Allston one. read more

Merchandise: This place seems to exist to resell you cheap Forever 21 clothing that you could have for about the same price new. Finding something higher quality than that here is rare. Selling anything higher quality than that to the store is impossible. Selling: Somehow they manage to make the selling process as humiliating as possible, too. I tried once, had everything rejected. Afterward I sold two of the rejected items on Ebay for 50 bucks total - I'm sure that's much more than they would have offered me, if they had taken then. What I really can't understand is why people "donate" stuff to them. They've rejected your clothing, so you give it to them for free? At least give it to Goodwill next door. Customer Service On the positive side, they do hold clothing for you, which I think is really nice for such a high turnover business. The salespeople are really nice. Overall Rating: They really deserve 1.5 stars. But, they seem to have stopped stocking any vintage clothing at all, so one it is. If they stocked vintage clothing I'd buy much more here (I know they don't stock it on purpose because they refused to buy some excellent stuff my friend brought in). This place is really hit or miss. I came in on a rainy Monday afternoon expecting the place to be deserted. I was wrong. The line to sell clothing was at least 5-6 people deep and seemed like it would take ages so I ditched the idea of trying to sell the bag I had brought with me and just went shopping instead. I ended up with a pair of skinny gap jeans in long length. A perfect score for a 5'10'' girl. They came to about $15 which I was satisfied in paying for the quality they were in. The racks were really hit or miss like I mentioned before. Target brand to high end names, and mixed prices $5-30 for a shirt. I can't comprehend paying over $20 for something that's used but I guess it depends on what I found if I was that interested. read more

O to the M to the F to the G. Finding this place literally changed my lifeee! The Buffalo Exchange in Philly was my absolute favorite store and I had no idea that they were a nationwide chain. I stumbled upon this gem and almost had a heart attack. The selection is just as fabulous as the Buffalo Exchange that I know and love. I found a gorgeous purple BCBG MaxAzria black tie dress, never worn, for $40. Love it. Plus the jewelry assortment is on par or even better than the one in Philly. They also have a section for top brands. I really honestly believe that Buffalo Exchange can no no wrong in my eyes! read more

Lacks the charm of a small consignment shop, feels like a mix between a garage sale and dumbed down version of t.j maxx. Sales people always seem to have better things to do - aka chat with each other, rather than help the customers. Prices are reasonable but nothing to jump at. I have visited many times, but have never bought anything...not impressed. There are better consignment shops out there, with more charm if that's the route you're going. And good will is a few doors down if you want cheap stuff - just save your money. read more

I have been to the Houston location so I knew what to expect. It's a little storefront from the outside, but when I stepped inside, I was surprised by how big this shop is. The Houston location is about the size of the 1st floor, but is more packed with items and has a more thrift shop feel where this location is more airy an spacious and feels more like a Gap with its neat racks, dressed mannequins, and friendly sales staff who say hello and goodbye to everyone entering and leaving. It's only been open about 7 months or so, maybe they'll offer more stuff and have less empty space. I brought in 2 grocery bags' worth of clothing to sell. They recently posted about looking for designer denim and I brought my partner's old trench so I thought, surely they would take some things. The manager herself worked my bags, going back and forth between me and to ring up customers (note: put at least 1hr in the parking meter because it took 45 min total after waiting behind 1 other person). She declined my AE, H&M, Limited, and Gap, and Banana Republic tops from 5+ years ago, but in very good condition. She rejected 2 pairs of Seven for All Mankind jeans and a pair of Citizens for Humanity jeans because they were hemmed. She spent the most time examining a pair of Target-brand dark rinse bootcuts with an almost flared opening and a small hole in the lower left leg, but then rejected them when she asked whether they'd been hemmed and I answered honestly. Hey, I'm short, can you blame me for wanting my jeans to fit right? In the end, she only bought the trench coat. They offer 50% store credit or 30% cash of their selling price. I grossed $6 after subtracting for my parking meter. I looked around for about 5 minutes since my parking meter was running out and I don't know how strict the Somerville traffic cops are. The front of the 1st floor is the men's section, the remaining half and the smaller basement level is women's. It's like rummaging through your cool sister's closet looking for items from the past few years. I saw some shorts from the Gap's spring/summer collection, some nice pumps from Cole Haan, oxford heels from Aldo. Prices pretty reasonable - cheaper than if you bought new, but not dirt-cheap as potentially at Goodwill or on eBay. Some of the summer offerings had red 50% stamps on their price tags. I took my $6.75 and dumped my partner's clothing at the Goodwill a few storefonts down. I took home my old clothes to hand down to family or bring to the next clothing swap. read more

I love this Buffalo Exchange as a buyer. Awesome brands and awesome quality. Sorted and organized pretty well. I've gotten some amazing deals here! I would take a star or two off as a seller reviewer. It really depends on which employee you get when you're selling. A few aren't so nice but a lot of the negative reviews come from people who are upset that they didn't sell a huge amount in one go... which just isn't realistic for any consignment store/exchange store. It is sometimes super annoying when you think you have a great haul to sell and they don't take that much though. Some of the employees are awesome and will explain why they aren't buying certain things which I love because it helps me know what to bring next time. read more

Overpriced clothes and selling your clothes here is a scam. You only get 30% of the selling price which is a huge rip off.

I was excited that the store had mens clothes so i picked out two pairs of pants. To my surprise one had a gross stain on the front area that resembled some bodily fluid. I was devastated and disgusted. Overall nice clean store but come on , clean your clothes or see spots on the front clean em. YUCK! I WOULD LIKE TO ALSO MENTION THAT MARIA L THERE FIRST REVIEWER IS A SEASONAL EMPLOYEE FROM A DIFFERENT BUFFALO STORE REVIEWING HER OWN NEW STORE. LAME-O. I SAW HER THERE ON SATURDAY.
