I really enjoyed my experience at buffalo exchange. The space was tidy and the employees were friendly and hard-working. There were only two unpleasant parts of my experience. One was that the space was really tight. It was hard to maneuver around the customers and all the racks. The second con is that the used clothes are slightly overpriced. I could get brand new things at TJ Maxx for a few dollars more. The best part was that if you take your clothes out yourself without bags, you get a 5 cent token to put in a box for your charity of choice on your way out. I am very disappointed in the selling experience at this store. They were NOT customer oriented. The wait for selling was over 40 minutes and they were highly selective. It was Sunday and there were a lot of people coming in to sell stuff, but the staff was good about managing the people waiting. Since I believe that reviews can be very helpful, and I have some thoughts about this Buffalo Exchange in Somerville, I figured I might as well share them. When this store first opened I was very excited since I have collected vintage clothing for decades and love searching thrift stores, flea markets, rummage and yard sales for treasures from past fashion eras. I stopped in a couple of times to poke around and get an idea of their inventory and pricing. The store is pretty appealing, clean, bright, well-stocked and very organized. The fresh-faced, young staff is friendly and helpful whether you are buying or just browsing. However, this is neither a consignment store with high-end, well-made, and cared for clothing, nor a vintage clothing store. It is a used clothing store with higher prices than the bigger Good Will, right next door. Since they buy from the community, it's important to know that the folks looking to sell their items are most likely students, from the various surrounding colleges, or young professionals who can afford to live in the neighborhood. Taking this into account should give a good idea of what to expect. When I sold to them they did buy a lot of my stuff, but I was surprised by what they rejected. It seemed like a bit of a crap shoot but you have to take into account the age of the staff and what they are wearing to work. When I used my store credit I bought a brand new Speedo swim suit, a pair of black, leather Converse All Stars which look like they've never been worn, and a linen top. Only complaint, the top had a small hole right in the middle of the front and when I showed the sales person she didn't offer any compensation for it. That was annoying. All of the complaints I see here seem to be the result of unrealistic expectations. While I probably won't sell or buy here a lot in the future, I wasn't disappointed by my experiences. However, being a dedicated thrift store shopper, I can usually do better, and spend much less, at Good Will, Savers, or The Salvation Army. A small suggestion might be that staff treat senior shoppers a bit better. Everyone likes to feel welcome and we're more likely to spend our money if we feel good about our experience!! read more

I went here to sell a brand new pair of shoes, and they were never worn once. Everything still in perfect condition. I'd figure I'd get a decent price in return for what I spent on the shoes originally considering the condition. I was better off using craigslist. I got next to nothing for them. I should've just kept them instead and tried goodwill and see what they would have given me. P.S. They don't have Plastic Bags, bring your own bag. read more

It has taken some time for me to come around to Buffalo Exchange and its not-so-vintage, not-really-consignment, actually-modern-cast-offs collection of clothing. I get it now and can sort of appreciate it for what it is even though it partially contributed to Poor Little Rich Girl leaving Davis and is a chain from California. As long as we all understand what it is, reselling of modern used clothing, we are good to go. And as of yesterday, we are officially good to go. I have bought things on and off from there, but had trouble finding items that truly resonated with me as much of the selection was from stores I don't shop at all that often (Urban Outfitters, Target, Forever 21, etc.). For the most part, clothes are of decent quality and one would not really be able to tell they are "used" all that much except for maybe the shoes, which show a bit more love than other items. The front of the store hosts the men's collection, which is fairly small, but one can only assume that represents what is brought in. If men do not bring in to sell, Buffalo Exchange cannot sell that much in return. See how it works? The women's collection spans half of the top floor, containing dresses, blouses, t-shirts, skirts, and more, with the bottom floor housing jackets, sweaters, and jeans. There is usually something there that you'll like and consider purchasing, maybe not love, but definitely like. Prices are reasonable and everyone once in a while there will be a complete and utter steal. Yesterday, I ended up buying THREE amazing dresses, one of which was the steal of a lifetime--a $158 Eliza J dress for $22.50. Hello(!), I am finally confident in Buffalo Exchange. The pending three star review can get moved up to four. Good work. Also, if you do not use a bag they give you a token to donate five cents to one of three charities. The staff is friendly for the most part and always take the time to greet you when you enter and say goodbye when you leave, regardless of whether or not you make a purchase. Almost every time I come in, I find something I love. The employees are pretty nice as a whole and when you refrain from using one of their bags, they donate to a charity. Granted, the donation is pretty minuscule but it's still a nice idea. Their stuff is pretty well organized but they've got less merchandise than goodwill next door. I love the Buffalo Exchane in Austin, TX, and this one sadly doesn't compare. It's still pretty good though. The one thing they should improve is their pants, especially jeans collection. It's awful. A friend of mine once tried to sell some True Religion jeans there and was turned down because, as the buyer said, "people would rather buy in season jeans from Forever 21" than flared jeans from True Religion. Yeah - ok. Those people go to Forever 21 and buy them new. You go to consignment to get expensive clothes. Otherwise you would just shop at Forever 21 exclusively. What they end up with is a bunch of old ugly cheap brand jeans that aren't in style anyway. They generally have pretty good tops and jackets though! read more

When I first reviewed this store I gave it four stars which is still pretty great. The reasons for four not five were that no matter when you go to sell clothes you have to wait a while, They are very picky about what they will buy and because most of the time that you're there you're up to your elbows in pretentious hipsters. The reasons it got 4 stars is that its a fantastic place to shop. The items are clean, organized and don't smell like mothballs like at a good will. They have a lot of one of a kind items that you can't find at most places. The prices vary but all in all I've been very happy with them. I have found jewelry that I love, They have a large selection of "eccentric" jewelry that I live for. I've purchased a ton of clothes that were all reasonably priced but more importantly where I couldn't find anywhere else. I've purchased several coach bags in decent condition for under 40 buck, 2 coach bracelets for under 20 each time, a DKNY handbag for 35 and a Francesco Biasia handbag that looks brand new for 55 and it currently retails at 390.00. I mean you can't find items in this good a condition at these prices anywhere else and believe me, I've looked. I am blown away by some of the deals I've gotten. I'm addicted to shopping here, in fact I don't like to have too much time go by between visits as I don't want to miss out on something great that they may have purchased since the last time I was there. Now the reasons they didn't initially get 5 stars are still true, However the staff are so friendly, helpful and personable that they really are able to compensate for the few annoyances that you hit along the way. For example, waiting in line is usually my least favorite thing in the world but again the staff are so personable that it becomes a much more pleasant expirience and you kind of forget you're even waiting in line. Also, the couple of times that there was a mistake made by an employee while I was checking out, they apologized profusely for the hold up and even offered me five dollars off my total. I mean customer service like that is very much lacking in 99% of the places you go. They are still very picky about what they will buy but as I mentioned in my first review, That makes perfect sense to me. They know what they can sell and they buy accordingly. If they just bought every piece of crap people brought them then they'd be out of buisness...and I'd be heart broken :) Also, as someone who shops there more than I sell there, I'm glad they're so picky, I know I don't want to sort through mountains of junk to find something and I don't want to buy something & then realize its stained or ripped. So as a consumer, They do an excellent job at chboosing what items to buy. You're still up to your elbows in pretentious hipsters that think they're too cool for school, That I will never have anything good to say about but the store itself is not to blame and I said in my first review, That's only the other customers and not even all of them. The staff however give a very friendly, down to earth vibe. They're pleasant, helpful and kind of entertaining. Other reviwers have mentioned feeling judged by employees, I've never felt that way while buying or selling. I would recomend that if you had a bad expirience that you go back and give it another try because I've had excellent expiriences each time I've been there. I could spend hours there browsing. I was VERY excited to find out that a Buffalo Exchange was opening in Davis, and spent many hours there - selling and buying - on the first weekend they opened. Selling: I felt I got very good prices on everything I sold, and plan to sell there again. I sold to two different buyers and both were very friendly. They are extremely discerning about clothing quality and condition. The tiniest rip or spot would immediately disqualify an item - so I would never expect to see clothing in anything but top condition in the store. Buying: The prices are great! I got a faux fur cropped coat for $12.00, a pair of straight-leg pale denim 7 for All Mankind jeans for $32.00, and many more amazing deals. There is a fun, diverse collection of dresses downstairs - I got a floaty red H&M dress with a tiny floral print for $19.00 that I love. It is the kind of shopping experience that makes you want to squeal out loud, so bring a friend! read more

Worst place EVER. Recently moved back from Vegas where the REAL Buffalo Exchange is located. Needless to say these franchise locations do NOT live up to the reputation of the original. Store help was extremely rude and impatient. The inventory was terrible and not worth looking through...and to top things off it appears you need to be friends with an employee to actually sell stuff here. Shady and bad. Avoid like the plague. You're better off using craigslist or donating your goods to the salvation army/goodwill. Never again unless i'm in Vegas at the flagship location. read more

Love this place. Don't buy as much as I would like, but sell a considerable amount. One of the other reviewers said it was a little frustrating, but my experience has been different. I find if you go in often, you get to know exactly what they are looking for (ask them, they'll tell you) and what they need based on current stock situation. I used to live in L.A. and this store seems like a watered down version of the one out there on Melrose. Some cute clothing, but even with a lot on the racks, there was a pretty limited size selection and not a ton of continuity. The staff seemed friendly enough, and I like that they'll buy clothing outright, but I really don't see how they could be a threat to PLRG, which is a totally different type of store. This seems like cleaner, more selective version of the Goodwill down the street. I wouldn't complain if a friend wanted to look around, but it wouldn't be my first choice, either. read more

This is definitely my favorite thrift store. The clothing options are really up to current styles and there's always something new to catch your eye! I've bought such cute dresses and overalls here and they always fit perfectly. Unlike other thrift stores, Buffalo Exchange has a large variety of sizes and can pertain to any age group. My favorite thing about this story otherwise than the adorable location of Davis Square and the variety of clothing options, is the fact that Buffalo Exchange is all green! You don't get a bag when you buy your clothing. Also, this shop has an area designated to donate clothes to Goodwill (which is also down the street) but you can also sell any clothing that Buffalo Exchange deems appropriate. I really like Buffalo Exchange because it's not musty and the gently used clothes don't make my skin crawl like some other second hand shops. I've never purchased clothes from here but I have sold with them twice and it has been overall a pleasant experience. The wait was at least an hour both times I went, and you only get 30% of what they will actually sell your clothes for in cash (50% if you take store credit), but $20 is better than nothing for clothes/accessories you're not wearing anymore. I wanted to sell or donate all the clothes and jewelry my ex bought for me (and I was determined to at least try to get something in return!) so I was pretty patient with the whole process, but in general, unless you have lots of designer duds that you won't wear anymore, you're not going to get much money. They have a donation bin for the Salvation Army for clothes that they won't buy from you and you don't want anymore, which is convenient. read more

To me the idea of a thrift store is to find another persons used goods for cheap and the money helps out the local community. Instead vintage stores are widespread and goodwills rise their prices to make more money. But then the Buffalo Exchange is that rare exception where they aren't too pricey and the brands they carry isn't your boring H&M garb. I fucking love this place. Having lived in LA for a number of years I got addicted to cheap accessible fashion, mostly from consignment or thrift store type places. The Buffalo Exchange in Davis Sq would fit in on Melrose Ave in Hollywood. I've always found great stuff here, staff is always great and their buying filtration system works well which makes it easier for me to shop because I don't have to sift through mountains of garbage like at many other consignment shops. read more

I don't always know how I feel about this place...especially when I bring them nice clothes and they tell me they'll five me five bucks for a lot. It's decent to buy, but you know they're making a huge profit when they sell your shit for its full retail value and then some, but give you a dollar.in return. You're better off selling on ebay or craigslist. Since not everyone realizes this or they just don't care, it's ok to shop here and find something unique. I have watched a lot of rude women not wanting to sell their items and got mad at the staffs because their items are not worth that much. The staffs often have to point to them the consignment store across the street or the goodwill since people just do not seem to understand that their taste might not match with the general public's. read more

I like this place because it's fun to shop and try things on that you normally wouldn't buy directly from the retailed brand. There are some pieces of clothing that are a little pricey for secondhand clothes, but you can also find a number of really good quality low priced items. I'm come here at least every other month when they have enough new items filtered into the racks. read more

Buffalo Exchange in Davis, CA was part of the ritual when visiting my sister (before she took a job in east nowhere, NC) and I always lamented not having such a place to recycle my unwanted wardrobe items. Fast forward five years to a B.E. in Davis Square! Have to say that it was painful to find out that my never worn DKNY dress was going to be priced at $18 (over $100 item only months ago) but that's the way it goes. Thankfully the pricing happens before your very eyes, so there is an opportunity for second thoughts. Walked out with a tidy sum in credit which I will use when the shopping bug strikes. Their selecting is pretty solid- they even have men's clothes- which is a rarity. The staff is friendly and the environment conducive to a lazy Sunday browse. I love this location of buffalo exchange! The store manager is awesome & every time I have sold or shopped here it's been a great experience. The staff is really knowledgeable on pricing items as far as I am concerned - I don't go there to sell any crap, I bring in the quality items I no longer wear that are in good condition & could be resold. If you go in with a bag of trash don't expect to leave without it because that's not what this store is about! Sometimes I take cash & sometimes credit and I think the exchange rate for both is definitely fair. A few of my favorite items in my closet came from Buffalo in Davis but really overall the associates here are really what makes Buffalo Exchange special. read more

I really love this place. I love it so much because it's a challenge. I say this as both a seller and buyer. As a seller, I have sold numerous articles of clothing back (which, let me tell you, is quite the confidence boost!). It really depends upon who the buyer is. One time I tried to sell back my aunt's misguided attempt at fashion, a bedazzled Ed Hardy sweatshirt, and the girl, rightfully so, declined; however, a couple of months later I found an Ed Hardy sweatshirt in the racks! As a buyer, you can't go in there with any expectations because you will surely be disappointed. I walked in there on the eve of my birthday looking for something snazzy and came out empty handed; however, I randomly walked in there this weekend and came away with a bag full of goodies! But, I have Express dresses, Gap sweaters, JCrew sweatshirts, green shoes, etc., in my wardrobe thanks to this place. I really like their accessories because they are so bizarre! You surely will not find anyone else wearing a heart and brass knuckle necklace anytime soon. Also, I find the staff to be generally pleasant. I mean, c'mon, they're hipsters who work at in a consignment shop in Davis Square. What do else would you expect from them? I really like this place. They have a good variety of clothes and brands ranging from old navy and american eagle to michael kors and betsy johnson. They are very picky with what they will buy back but I guess thats understandable since you only buy what you can sell. Here is a little FYI though.. they dont allow any beverages so toss your starbucks coffee before you go in because they will catch you! read more

I honestly can't believe alk the mean comments about the staff i.e rude, pretentious, and mean REALLY!! I was just there yesterday to do some selling. The "dude with the broken arm" couldn' t be more friendly, funny and just generally a very cool guy. I always leave with at least 50$ anytime I sell there. Visiting from the west coast and been to a lot of different thrift and funky shops on both coasts. Best customer service of any Buffalo Exchange I've been to! I am a retail store manager and know how important this is, I also know how easy it can be to get a bit snotty or pretentious when you work in a "cool" shop. I did not get that vibe at all, employees were cheerful, helpful, and attentive, answering questions, offering to hold items, offering fitting rooms, items off display etc. GREAT JOB! Clean bright and organized. fun atmosphere and good selection. Attractive window displays. Some pricing inconsistencies, ie: some designer items for 20 bucks but some no name t shirts are 12-15. Overall a great time, wish I had remembered my store credit card from home :) read more

I've had nothing but positive experiences here SELLING clothes not just buying. I think people expect to go in and sell a crappy T Shirt for 50$ ??? If they can resell it, they'll buy it, if not, they're not going to take it. Sounds like a regular business model to me. I sold them 300$ worth of stuff I wasn't going to wear. I seriously get almost all my clothes here. They are very well-selected, with most pieces being very trendy and all within around $10-20. I don't sell stuff here since they're really picky about what's acceptable and that'd give me crazy anxiety, so I dump my stuff at Goodwill, and head over for shopping!!
