On a road trip and needed a place to stay in Medora. What a diamond in the rough. Sure it is not the Ritz, but we weren't looking for that. We found the room rustic, but at the same time, clean , quiet and comfortable. ( Mattresses very comfortable). Staff very personable and friendly , fire pit out back a nice place to connect with fellow travellers to share stories of the day. The Ranch it about 6 miles out of town, about a mile of which is on a dirt road Being remote as it is lends to the serenity, view of the Badlands and night stargazing! Oh and the sunrises from our room ... breathtaking! (See pic) If ever back in the area will definitely be making a return trip to "the Ranch"!!! In the area?? Buffalo Gap Guest Ranch & Trail Head - Good morning from the Buffalo Gap Ranch! - Hotels Near Me

I'm writing this on behalf of both my mom and myself. My mom booked the room under the wedding event rate, and since I arrived early on Friday, I paid for it -- nearly $300. I had no idea what the rate was supposed to be, but my mom had received verbal confirmation that it was a flat fee of $99 per night for the wedding, totaling about $198 + tax. What they don't tell you is that they charge per person in the room -- which is absolutely ridiculous, especially since the room sleeps six! When I brought this up, I was told, "No, that's right. We charge per head." I replied, "The room sleeps six. It should just be a flat rate across the board." The employee insisted that "all the rooms here and in Medora do it that way." I told her that was nonsense -- because no hotel or Airbnb charges hidden per-person fees like that -- and she got upset that I said "horseshit." Apparently, that was enough for her to tell me to leave and nearly take my receipt. This charge will be disputed, because you can't advertise a flat event rate and then secretly tack on extra "per head" charges after the fact. The food itself was decent, but even that experience wasn't great -- I was snapped at during the wedding dinner because my tray wasn't on the "bottom" of the conveyor when going through the line. There's no reason to yell at paying guests over something that small. As for the room, we were located near the campers. That wasn't the problem -- but waiting 30 minutes for hot water to reach the shower definitely was. The sink got hot instantly, so that made zero sense. Then we found a live worm in the bed my mom was sleeping in, and the door didn't seal properly, which probably explains the centipede we found inside too. Overall, the food was the only halfway decent part of the stay -- but between the surprise "per head" charges, rude staff, and bugs in the room, I would absolutely not recommend staying here. read more

Such a wonderful experience! We stopped here passing through on a road trip. Dog friendly which is a major plus. The owners are very friendly and hospitable. It is a bit off the grid, but truly adds to the rustic cowboy experience! The rooms are basic but very comfortable with a log cabin-like atmosphere. A great place to stay! My husband and I have stayed there twice, over a week long. The owners and staff are very friendly and do their best to make your visit a fun and wonderful experience. During our last visit (June 2021), an electrical substation miles away went out, causing a power outage at the Ranch. This was no problem for Olie (the owner of the ranch), he kicked on the generator and still was able to have breakfast served to all the hungry guests! Speaking of food, everything we ordered from the menu was great. The steaks were our favorite, cooked to perfection every time. This is truly a North Dakota working ranch. You'll find this place to be gun and hunting friendly, family friendly, pet friendly and all kinds of animal friendly! They are freedom-loving Americans and welcome all who come to stay. If you're expecting a 5-star city hotel experience, then this may not be the place for you. On the other hand, if you're looking for a rustic, authentic ranch adventure and don't mind getting your boots dusty, then this place will hit the mark. Be aware though, depending on the time of year you visit, they may be short-handed, so have patience, sit back and relax, and know that they are working hard to accommodate your needs. We stayed there for a night. It's the only hotel or lodging that's Pet friendly others were not or they're close for the season. The cabin or the room is pretty huge it has basic stuff such as refrigerator and microwave as well as TV. There's 2 queen size bedrooms and 2 bunk beds. The bathroom however is a bit outdated it was not clean and the towels smells a bit super bleach and it's a bit old too. However the restaurant is awesome, they said it's really slow during winter season by that time we're the only guest there. The food is decent ,I like their fresh eggs. But most of the creamers are expired. Nevertheless it was clean and presentable it has a conference area or good for reunions or wedding venues. The owner Mr. & Mrs. Cecelia and Olie are very sweet and fun to talk to. They're very good people. I almost forgot to mention the road going to this place is not paved and it was dark. read more

Think "rustic cabin" for Buffalo Gap Ranch, not "hotel." There's flies, worn comforters, thin towels, uncovered lightbulbs, tired pillows, and worn out mattresses. You will hear your neighbor on the other side of the wall, as if they are standing next to you. The food at the restaurant is good, but the accommodations made me want to run for the hills. read more

Buffalo Gap Guest Ranch is a GREAT place to eat and spend the night. For others it is also a great place to ride horses and hunt. We were headed to Theodore Roosevelt NP, and spent the night at this awesome ranch. Reserving a cottage, we got in a bit late, but no worries because we checked in at the bar and made it to the cottage. It was big, CLEAN, and very welcoming! Not only is there a big, comfortable bed, but two bunk beds as well! The bathroom is all modern, and everything works great - including the large shower and hot water! We got into ND just before the snow, and the heater kept us cozy and warm all night! This ranch is a great price, but there is way more than that to the Buffalo Gap Guest Ranch! We headed to the restaurant for a snack after checking in, and ordered "steak fingers". I had to laugh - if you are from around there you know how good they are and our friend from Montana had introduced us to this great taste! Finishing off the night, we shared a huge piece of blueberry pie - homemade and tasted every bit of sweetness and flavor! The morning brought special delights - the grasslands were absolutely gorgeous and we took many pictures. There were also camping sites, room for horse trailers and a corral with showgrounds. There is a lot going on during the summer in North Dakota - and it looks like this guest ranch is busy with many tourist activities! Heading to the restaurant for a buffet breakfast (another really reasonable amenity!) we witnessed an elk hanging for one of the hunters who had enjoyed the Sat. night steak special! (Great price for a really special steak dinner!) What a beautiful prize for a very lucky elk hunter this season. Another guest explained the draw system for elk, and the "once in a lifetime" chance to bag an elk. He was gorgeous! The breakfast was more than tasty! The eggs were creamy and perfectly cooked, while the potatoes were crispy and expertly fried. Warm biscuits could be topped with a creamy and meat packed gravy, or as I preferred with jam. The bacon - OMG the bacon! It was the best tasting bacon ever! Crispy and smokey - the perfect combination! Again - a great bargain for the best breakfast! TRNP was calling, so we drove away from The Buffalo Gap Guest Ranch! You won't find a cooler place to stay (and cheaper) than the touristy hotels in town. Just a few exits from the national park. Really nice people, but don't expect stellar customer service. You "check in" at the bar. Food at the restaurant was excellent. Fridge and microwave in every room. Love the log cabin atmosphere. read more

As we traveled from Ky to the coast we came upon this ranch. Getting back to the ranch was let's say where are we headed? But as you come over the hill on the tight packed gravel road you see the gem. The moment we drove in from time we left was great. My husband, myself and two dogs recently spent two long creepy nights at this "Guest Ranch". Granted it was in the off-season, but the place was spooky. When we woke up the first morning there was not a SOUL on the property except my husband and myself. The room was THE MOST FILTHY I have ever seen. The floor was concrete and had not been cleaned in months -- maybe ever. The stench was as if we were staying in the barn -- a nice touch at a Dude Ranch, and the lighting was awful -- we only noticed the throw rugs that had years of accumulation of pet hair and filth in the morning. It really gave me the creeps! The ONLY reason we stayed the second night was because all the dog friendly hotels (nearest was in Dickinson) were so either booked or outrageously expensive -- supply and demand with all the oil work going on up there. I was amazed they actually "up-charged" us to stay in the dog-friendly room! I didn't even like my dogs playing on the floor it was so bad! Ick,Ick, Ick -- stay away! read more

Please note that we stayed at Buffalo Gap ND on the 4th of July and had a terrible stay. We tried hard to work out all of the mishaps as they came up giving them the benefit of the doubt. We had made our reservations with Sally, she was inviting and helpful. We called her back and let her know that we would be in after 10:00 p.m.. She set up with us a room number and key arrangements. We arrived at 10:10 p.m. and the room had been used bedding was dirty, towels were moist and piled by the bed, a beer bottle and plastic cup were set by the beds. There was no one to help us work this out. We had just driven hours and were exhausted, we waited from 10:10 pm to 12:06 pm to check in. (The Bar was closed for fireworks) We tried to talk with your manager and all we heard about was how he only takes one day a year off the 4th of July and this happens. BUT BY GOD we still needed to pay him a $110.00 for the room. He was an older man that had no concern for our stay at the Buffalo Gap. Stay in Wibaux MT, Medora ND or camp the Badlands but DO NOT stay at Buffalo Gap. read more
