Our tour guide, Berry, was excellent! I wouldn't want to do this with anyone other than him! He is very funny and filled with a lot of great knowledge. He talks to you in a casual way and is very engaging. The jeep was pretty comfy and the blankets they provide for cold days were very clean. This is a must if you visit Custer State Park. It allows you to close to the wildlife and go places in the park no one else can go. During the trip you get some history of the park and a lot of interesting information about the animals in the park. Great way to get up close and personal with a bison. A friend had taken this tour and said it was her favorite thing that she did in SD. Price wasn't bad for 2 hours of fun. Our guide Jeff was very pleasant and knowledgeable. We went on the safari September 18 with Berry our driver and guide. We had a great time! The jeep ride was fun and he was an excellent and safe driver and informative tour guide. We saw lots of buffalo and up close! We also saw prairie dogs, antelope and deer and the darling begging burrows. The evening ended with a cowboy cook out with tender steak,salads,cowboy beans,cornbread and watermelon. We had a great country singer for entertainment. We enjoyed meeting new people on our safari. Juan was our driver and very knowledgeable about the area and wildlife. We did a private jeep tour so our entire family could be together. We ranged from 7yrs-62yrs old and everyone enjoyed it. Juan was able to get us up close to the animals. The buffalo were so close you could touch them. We also saw pronghorn, a rabbit, prairie dogs galore, a buffalo "bull" walking down the middle of the road, deer. Everyone was very nice, highly recommend this tour. This tour was a great way to see and learn about Custer State Park. Our guide Bob (aka Buffalo Bob) was terrific. He shared his knowledge of the park operations and management of the Buffalo herd. He shared some great stories of the history of the park. We had driven around the park a couple days before and saw a few buffalo but this tour went on roads that we could not go on. We saw a decent amount of buffalo, including some quite young, moving together across our path. The jeep was much more comfortable than I expected. read more

I was pleasantly surprised with the value for this tour. It was about $60 per person for two hours. The guide was very informative and was able to track down some elk, donkeys, and deer, along with the prairie dogs and buffaloes. The buffalo herd we saw had about 500 head and was amazing to see all the different ages of buffalo, from grand dam mamas to recently born babies. Our guide even took us to what he called Gobbler's Knob and we got a great view of the park, clear to Nebraska. I absolutely recommend taking this tour. read more

Not worth the $55 per person rate. The majority of the tour is on the public road that you can drive your own vehicle on. 15 minutes spent off road among a herd of bison (pretty cool), but the rest of the time was spent listening to stories and driving around. I was definitely feeling worn down by this time in our vacation, but we had been told that the safari ride was a highlight for others, and we already had a reservation. When we got there, the bison were everywhere, so it seemed a little silly to head on to a tour to "find" them... Ah well. I figured it'd be nice just to sit and relax. I wasn't sure what to expect, but as the jeeps pulled up, everyone was raving about what an amazing and awesome tour it was on their way out. My husband, our 3 little boys (2, 4 and 4 months), and myself climbed into an extended jeep (I think, "sweet-- it's just us and maybe I can take a nap"). And we're off! Our tour guide, Meryl, starts talking (using an intercom system so everyone can hear clearly-- perfect!), and doesn't stop for nearly 2 hours! It was so much more than a "buffalo" tour. We saw a ton of wildlife and learned so much about the history and ecology of the park. I'm convinced Meryl knows everything. He's awesome and kind and truly one of the best tour guides I've ever had. He made himself fit right in to our family, and it felt like hanging out with a friend the whole time. Also, it seems as though your guide can tailor the tour to your group-- we saw a few groups almost off-roading it, while we got to head out to see the begging burros (to my 4 year olds delight!). I cannot recommend this trip enough. It will be a highlight of our black hills vacation. read more

Nice tour for the price. Fun folklore from Gary! We learned a lot and he was flexible about stopping for photos. The Jeep drivers walkie to each other to notify where the pronghorn elk, badgers, prairie dogs, & wild turkeys can be seen. "Off road" means gravel road. All of these are public roads, but Gary knows good stories about the area. It was nice to let someone else do the driving. They even provided blankets since it can get chilly. Don't expect to go anywhere crazy, and your expectations will be met. read more

We did a 6:00 am sunrise tour and it was the highlight of the trip. Most of our travels followed the wildlife loop road, but we had the advantage of a knowledgable, kind and funny guide. They knew were to find the animals, and were able to travel restricted side roads to provide access to wildlife and scenic views. Keep in mind that the guides cannot predict wildlife activity (or locations, especially on the first trip of the day such as the sunrise tour). read more

We saw a bunch of buffalo on our way in to Creekside Lodge (pickup point for Jeep Tour) and were stuck in a buffalo-jam so I didn't expect to be super impressed with the tour. I was totally wrong. Our guide was very knowledgeable, friendly and answered our many, many questions. We stumbled across an enormous herd of buffalo (the guide estimated about 800) and just sat watching them in awe as they slowly moved across the land. I definitely wouldn't have wanted to navigate that driving on my own. We went off road a couple of times and saw more buffalo, deer and tons of prairie dogs. Just got off the Buffalo Safari Jeep Tour - very disappointing (especially considering the steep price). Everything we saw, we saw from the public road... we could have just driven the park loop, and we would have seen everything we did while on the tour. We spotted buffalo from afar, but our Jeep driver didn't have "authorization" to take us closer - we were only off-road ONCE for about five minutes, tops. Website is misleading; tour guide was a bit of a downer, quite cynical; we saw buffalo from afar twice (and we understood going into it that seeing them isn't guaranteed), but our guide did not have the authorization and/or did not feel the need to go off-road to get us closer. (Used the max 350x zoom on my camera to capture them, and even then the buffalo looked tiny on the digital screen.) In short: false advertising - we stuck to the main roads - and we just learned about buffalo hunting and selling, as well as controlled burns and forest fires. Save your time, save your money, pass on this tour. read more

What a waste of time and money. The advertisement says the jeeps go 'where only we can go...off road'. Well, the jeep tour drives the public loop road. The only animals we saw we could have seen on our own, without spending $50+/per person. Obviously, no one can predict where animals and buffalo will be. But, when we saw some buffalo in the distance, we didn't go off-road to get closer. We went off-road, once, about 20 feet. Then, the driver said that was as far as we could go. So, for over $300 for our family of six, we saw two antelope, several burros, and buffalo WAY in the distance... all from the public loop road. Such a major disappointment. Also, while our driver did have some interesting facts, he was somewhat of a Debby-downer. read more

It advertised an off-road experience where no others could go, however the entirety of the tour was on public roads where all others could go, with buffalo in sight but tour guides having no authority to actually drive near them. This paired with a cynical and rather depressing tour guide created an unpleasant experience with no buffalo and no off roading. After reading reviews on Epinions, I was mixed on this tour. Evidently you can often see herds of buffalo from the roads around the park making the jeep safari unnecessary. Aside from a few big buffalo bulls, we didn't see the herds and opted for the jeep safari. It's about what you'd expect with most tours. It was cool to see the buffalo, but not interesting enough that I'd do it again. Dead average and therefore 3 stars. read more

Everywhere these guys drive you can drive yourself. It's a waste of money. If the buffalo aren't on the road they won't get you any closer than you can get yourself. You can ask at the information center where to find the buffalo and go find them. read more
