We had a fun experience doing the "pay your age" birthday bear for my new 1-year-old on a Sunday when they first opened at 11am at the Washington Square Mall. The store wasn't super big but it's FULL of stuffies and all the fun accessories. It was a little hard to navigate through when there was more people browsing and stuffing. They had some really cool Halloween ones and lots of different characters too. You pick the stuffy you want and the friendly staff walks you through all the steps to get it filled. You can do scents, recorded messages, and lots of different upgrades for your bear but we kept it simple with just the red heart. You get to choose the softness and firmness and my older daughter got to stuff it with the foot pedal. That was very special for both of them! The accessories definitely add up with each thing costing a wide range depending on the item. But the customization was so fun for the kids. They also had mini small stuffies as well if you don't want to stuff your own. This was definitely a nostalgic experience and you can't beat a $1 bear! read more

If you sign up for rewards you probably won't receive the $10 coupon until weeks later. Don't count on it. I asked at the store and they said it was out of their control we could get it the same day or whenever. I called and asked an associate about the birthday bear the way it works is you can only choose the brown bear and it depends how old you are turning that month will be how much you pay for the bear. I.e. if your child is turning 6 the bear will cost $6 (accessories & clothes are sold separately) if your child is turning 12 you'll pay $12 for the bear etc. read more

This used to be a monthly visit, Covid hit, and staff change was immediate. I don't recognize any faces helping me, but some are friendly enough. However, one member made me never want to come back- in fact before stepping in to look around I check to see if she's there. If she is, I don't go in. A new popular drop in a big line happened, I walked in early to grab. Four of us have it in our hands and this employee is standing close. She looks at one of us and says, "not to be rude, but that's the ugliest thing I've ever seen." Not to be rude, but four people wanting to buy it for themselves or loved ones, *might* be pissed off to hear that. It was completely insulting and uncalled for. I heard her again after getting it stuffed as she told a customer while *ringing it up* that she didn't like it, and the customer laughed it off and told her it's for someone else. Yeah, like people with anxiety will pick a fight with an insulting jerk of a worker. I won't name you here, just know I posted in a few groups and sent in a survey with your name- yes, you also rung me up and I had your name on the receipt. I didn't want to bother doing that but almost everyone in the groups agreed- you were a jerk and shouldn't be working in a place a child might overhear you, or adults who self soothe that can be insulted by you. Do better. The rest of the staff are mostly clueless or just trying to work and live their lives, they're not as excited about it anymore, and they don't seem to want to talk. For a Saturday evening the store had a stream of customers and three employees who were all kind and had smiles, even after the whole day. The store is set up with different stations that explain everything you do- pick the "bear" you want, stuff it, dress it, and name it. Overall the process is simple and customization to the max which is nice for kids and the name certificate makes things personal too. I would say $100 per animal with all the details is a good way to look at how much one would spend. The amount fluctuates depending on the accessories and if the heart inside the animal is scented or with sound. Variety of accessories and clothes makes it fun dor adults to get into it too- wigs, costumes, animal carriers, dog/cat food, sunglassed and even hospital kit with band aids, shots etc. Service we experienced was great! The employees looked in the back for us for a clothing item and even suggested we take the last one off the display animal. Also, gave suggestions on color and accessories. Genuinely interacted with the children and wanted to know about their new creation. Though it can get crowded on weekends or when there is a deal/promo, for out of town little kids it was a fun experience! read more

I want to give some kudos to Allie who is the most sweetest person to ever help us at a BAB hands down she is perfect the one star comes from Kathie who I truly hope gets some really training on how to provide feedback in private and praise in public. This is a great place to go and spend some money like $35-$50 a pop). Totally worth it to do a birthday party here. Kids and adults alike have a blast creating aa new friend. The party prices range in pricing and what each package offers to the recipient. We got the package with all the bells and whistles - $45/kid. This included an employee completely dedicated to you and your party. You also received any of the stuffed and fluff animals, an outfit with shoes, a bag to carry them in and a sound to put in the stuffy. It was a great time. Jackson helped us through the process and can I just say he is one of the most hilarious and amazing people I have ever met. Rainbows...CHECK Sparkly Things...CHECK Cutesy Boo Boo Goo Goo...CHECK Stressed the heck out because you don't know where to start when it comes to finding the perfect stuffed toy for your darling niece...DOUBLE CHECK I walked in with an over-the-top stuffed toy in mind because that's kinda my thing since DN was born. I look around, with my friends from Portland with me of course as advisors, and see all kinds of things that would make me yet again the BEST UNCLE EVER!!! As I saw all these potential stuffed toys with their pre-stuffed heads and lifeless appendages, I began to panic that is until one of the associates gave me a paper bag (not really). She showed me their new My Little Pony line especially the girl one named Pinkie Sue, Pinkie Poo, Pinkie Doo...umm...oh yeah that's right it was Pinkie Pie! This thing was pink with a bright pink mane and tail along with some rainbow markings and of course big blue eyes like my DN! This was the one so we went over to get her stuffed and I got the run down on everything that happens during the stuffing stage. I opted to have a beating heart added (extra charge) to the pony and they provide a fabric heart you're supposed to kiss, rub and do other things to make the stuffed animal have certain qualities, honestly I felt like such a fool but this was in the name of my DN so I had to soldier on. After the stuffing, I was encouraged to accessorize. There were full outfits, jewelry, the works. I just settled for a rainbow tutu (extra charge) since that is a complete contrast to my very masculine ways *cough*. The final step was naming this explosion of girlie rainbowy cuteness and happened to be the most maddening. I literally sat there on a kid computer to complete the process of making the birth certificate that is included with the stuffed animal and fabric heart. I literally blanked on what to name this thing until, with the help of my friends who at this time have laughed so hard they were red in the face, they suggested I name her Rosie after the Rose City which Portland is nicknamed. The staff were great and I actually had a good time but it's highly advisable you bring your kids so you don't look like one of those creeps who drive around in windowless vans. My son and I come here often. We went in yesterday to get an evee. They were sold out, however they still made the experience worth going. They always have. The staff are very friendly and eagerly help you out. They let us know more would be in by Tuesday. And to call sat morning to see if they had any and to place one on hold. I was a little upset to hear you could hold one, having just been in the week before, nobody mentioned that to me. Other than that one minor misunderstanding, they are always great. read more

Before I start I just want to clarify that our receipt said the cashiers name was Tina, and this whole review is based on Tina. I have not witnessed such terrible customer service in my life. She was incredibly rude to the customers in line in front of us, and then when it was our turn the belittling continued! We had two of the gift certificates from the pay your own age and she stated that we couldn't use one for the bear and one for the clothes (which we were told we could by a build a bear employee when we braved the line originally) she continued to be extremely condescending and was extremely rude to both my two year old child and her mom! Will not be returning or recommending this location to anyone. Management needs to step up and make this a child safe environment read more

I'm from California and have gone to one in my town so I knew what to expect - came to visit family and we decided to come here for the first time and I loved it the ladies were really nice and helpful , didn't catch there names, but it was a nice experience - also got the deal of 2 for 35 so even better lol the only thing was we didn't get a box for our bears not sure if they do that here or not but thought that was odd. If you haven't been here before, I'll tell you what it's like: First of all, it's in the Washington Square mall. After you enter, there are stuffed animals on display so your child can see which one s/he wants. Bears are not the only thing you can choose from. There are Pokemon, Star Wars characters, and also other animals like unicorns. Expect to spend at least $16 for the animal. (Most cost about $25.) Everything else costs extra money. You don't get to select a custom color for your animal/toy. You have to select one that is already colored the way it is. After you choose one, you take your deflated choice to the next area, where you select what sound you want it to make when you press its foot. The sounds range from animals noises to kid movie phrases/songs to a recording of whatever you want to say. After you select one of the sounds, you get to press a foot pedal to stuff your deflated animal. After it gets stuffed and a symbolic heart is placed inside, you can select a scent for your animal. Next, you pick out the clothes, shoes, skates, and any other accessories you want. After that, you name your pet/animal/toy and print its birth certificate (this part is free). Last, you pay lots of money and become the envy of every child you pass. It's an enjoyable experience as long as your kid gets what s/he wants. The employees are nice and patient. read more

The animals are relatively cheap but the accessories are very expensive. Keep in mind about $15 for the animal and about $30 for accessories if you want an average accessorized animal. The fault is not with the wonderful staff but the product. The staff were personable, freindly and professional. We understood the whole process to be marketing genius to extract much more money for the individualized pieces than one would ever expect to pay for a complete plushie, but we were willing to splurge this time. What I was not expecting was LESS THAN carnival toy quality. Things that worked or seemed put together in the store were broken by the time we got home: Chewbacca's bow no longer made sounds and the back seam ripped open. Our puppy frequently steals the kids plushies to chew on and had the entire face ripped off of one of them in minutes. At first I was upset at the dog for ruining an expensive item we just bought but then realized he has never been able to do this kind of destruction with a Squishable or any other plushie in a matter of minutes. That speaks to the poor quality of the product. Poor quality at high quality prices. Never again! read more

Amazing staff and great experience! We took our daughter to build a couple of My Little Pony babies to celebrate her 3rd birthday. We first joined the build-a-bear club online, so she got a sweet little birthday surprise as well when we went in (sticker and birthday bear for $3)! We were delighted that the My Little Pony dolls were on a 2 for $35 special (we expected to pay full price of $29 each, so yay!) and she got an additional birthday bear for $3 (pay the child's age)! So, THREE amazing dolls for under $40. A wonderful value. While there, our daughter was pretty skeptical of the stuffing machine, so she kept her distance while I had them made. It's a super cute experience however, as you get to place a tiny stuffed heart into each doll and make a wish before it's made. Afterwards, you can create birth certificates for free for each doll. The staff were so friendly and outgoing and made sure everyone had a great time! While it can quickly get expensive with the many accessories, we opted not to get those this time. All of the kids in the store seemed to have a great time and we'll return next year! read more
