Anytime I have a special occasion that requires a gift for a young one. I go to thinker toys. I love the variety, and especially the educational toys. My niece's favorite dress up cape comes from Thinker Toys, and many of their favorite stuffed animals have been acquired here as well. It has that local small neighborhood shop feel but still has toys from all over for all ages. The staff is great at making recommendations or showing you around. If you've not been in there for a while or ever. They also have gift wrapping which is so excellent and anytime I show up with the Thinker Toys, gift wrap, my nieces get so excited. A neighborhood toy store that has been around forever. Wonderful toy shop. Great for buying birthday gifts for kids 10 and under. The staff is very knowledgeable and they gift wrap which is always a plus. The prices are comparable to any other local store. Yes, it's a little bit more expensive than shopping online. However, it's a much better experience and it's nice to not have to go home and fuss with wrapping paper. Their staff was friendly. The store is has a two-tier floor plan, but they have a ramp if you have a stroller or anything with wheels. What an amazing local shop to foster fun and frivolity! My son absolutely loves it to the max. We frequent this shop as neighborhood residents. They have a ton of inventory to cater to many different ages. Prices are very reasonable and I love that I support local people with my purchases. The store itself is spacious and they have a clean bathroom that is kid friendly; a nice changing table is available. There is a dedicated play area for the kids that I can still fit in as an adult if I crouch down enough... there is a kitchen and a table inside for kids to chill and banter in. The staff is so polite and accommodating to parents and kids alike! They also offer complimentary gift wrapping if you're shopping for a special occasion. Our first time in the area today and we had some time to kill so we wandered into a few shops. This toy store is brilliantly adorable. They have all of the good stuff, both new and classsic, that you could want or need. Prices seem reasonable to me and we ended up leaving with a few goodies. But I give high marks on this review specifically for their amazing play cottage inside, having a public restroom for shoppers, and offering free (super cute) gift wrapping. We have been regulars here for over 10 years. So many great toys that you will not find a Target. Many activity-oriented toys and cooperative board games. The employees are amazing and will wrap your item for free. The only downside is parking is challenging in Multnomah Village, but it is worth driving around in circles. read more

Thinker Toys is a cook toy shop that covers the equivalent of 2 storefronts. My Son and I entered after seeing a huge stuffed penguin in the window that we thought might make a great gift for Gayle. Besides, the practicalities of getting this stuffed animal into my suitcase, the bird really wasn't really for sale. But once we were here, why not look around. We were among Kids of all ages and there's plenty of things here to play with. The selection is well curated, and this being Portland, don't expect any war toys. David and I departed after several minutes, thinking that maybe we should have purchased the stilts and learned how to use them together. :) read more

An excellent toy store that will delight adults as well as kids. Everything in Thinker Toys is educational and (mostly) better quality than anything you'll find at a similar Big Box toy store. The toy selection is small and more expensive but the quality and customer service (free gift wrapping) makes up for that. I also found out from the owner that they are not affiliated with the Thinker Toy stores in California I've been to. They are totally independent. Don't come looking for electronic toys, not much of that here. Lots of real play-with toys: puzzles, books, board games, cars, trucks, trains, plastic animals, etc. I have a few great-nieces & nephews who are really into "playing house" and Thinker Toys has the quality kitchenware toys and play food items to ignite any child's imagination. My favorite item, and one I had as a child, are the plain old wooden blocks. You know, the ones that come in all sizes & shapes: wedges, rectangles, squares, and are unpainted. Really simple toys! Yes, they have some Legos and Brios but no war toys or action figures. If I had one complaint it is that the store is not easily handicapped accessible. There are steps to another level of the store that you'd never get a wheelchair up. Also, some of the displays and shelves are so close together that you'd never be able to navigate a wheelchair, let alone a stroller, through. I understand there is just so much space and it is a very small store. I wouldn't make a special trip out to Thinker Toys - parking is a nightmare - but would go back if I was in the area. read more

This review is in direct response to Jan C's ridiculous review. Dear Jan, WE ARE IN A PANDEMIC! Many places have close restrooms and dressing rooms to reduce the spread of Covid-19. If your kid had to go to the bathroom, take them home, or maybe make sure they go to the bathroom before you leave the house, and then maybe don't drag them around all day so they end up needing to use a public restroom. If they are old enough, explain to your child what is going on so you aren't caught in this situation again. An outrage? Get a grip. I wrote earlier about a great experience with Thinker Toys at Christmas 2020. I had never been to the store having done the transaction over the phone. I promised at that time that when the pandemic was over that I'd go down there in person and buy toys. 7/10/2021 was the day. The pandemic may not be over but having been vaccinated we made the thirty minute drive to the store with a plan to buy toys for our grandchildren who were coming to town for a much delayed visit. Almost all toy stores are magical places and Thinker Toys does not disappoint. It is full of toys for all ages (full of customers, too). We searched for games and found a couple that we had in mind and then asked a person behind the counter for suggestions. She was knowledgable and took the time to point out a few games that were subtly different to give us multiple choices. Great big toy store in the heart of Multnomah Village! It's a little kids... and some adults idea of heaven. Tons of puzzles, board games, cars, trucks, trains, educational games, etc. I have come here a couple of times to get presents for my nieces and nephews. I have also purchased a gift card from them. They wrap everything for free with cute wrapping paper and a bow. Which is such a nice service because I am terrible at wrapping gifts. It is a little more pricey than say you shopped on amazon (my friend bought settlers of Catan in store but it was $7 cheaper online), But the plus side is that you get to support a small local business. I was looking for a specific game - Labyrinth with Harry Potter - and had issues finding it. Having struck out online locally (Vancouver and downtown Portland) and then online with most of the major sites (some sites had it but there was a delayed shipment along with a reasonably high price). While considering a post-xmas delivery at twice the price, I made a deeper local search and found Thinker Toys. They had the game and when I asked them if they would ship to my daughter they found out the cost and called me to confirm. I was happy to find the gift and have them willing and able to ship but they went further. I was asked what holiday the gift was for and if I'd like it wrapped. I didn't want to create any more effort but they said it was no problem and was at NO CHARGE! On the 25th we watched our grandchildren open their presents from 1,000 miles away and our granddaughter (a huge HP fan) was thrilled to get the game she wanted. What a wonderful store for educational toys. It was so nice to watch my son kill time enjoying the train tracks that were set up in the back, actually the item that we went in to find. Even more enjoyment had from watching him actually PLAY instead of having some sort of electronic stimulation. Who knew it would be so hard to find wooden tracks to add on to his current collection. This store has Quality goodies for kids of all sizes, including adults. I was about to purchase a microscope there for my daughter, however the price I felt was a bit steep. For some reason the Yelp page said they stayed open until 7pm. I came a little after 6 to buy presents for my nieces. The door was locked and the sign on the door said closed at 6. I was heartbroken. In a desperate attempt to get my dollar store shopping mother-in-law to stop buying cheap "made in china" plastic toys for my kids, I enticed her with a day of shopping. Just the two of us. My MIL who never wants to miss an opportunity to prove that in laws can get along, agreed. I wanted her to check this out, so she could see that she could by my son wooden blocks. I was sorely dissapointed, that the simple set of wood blocks were frickin $90 and still "made in china". WTF? We did find some cheaper options, for my budget minded MIL but I think they were still plastic. Bottom line, the toys are orginal and there are loads of options for wood made toys. I did see lots of toys very similar to the ones that MIL has bought my children from the dollar store, but costing lots more. Nice toys, decent selection. A little spendy, and why? read more

Thinker Toys has an awesome selection of toys, and an awful lot of them are eco-friendly (Plan Toys gets plenty of shelf space). The cheap molded plastic is actually pretty hard to find at this store. The staff is very friendly, and very knowledgeable. They don't bat an eyelash when you ask if some obscure line of wooden train track pieces is compatible with Thomas the Tank Engine. The toys are more expensive than what you'll find at Mass Market Toy Depot, but that's because they're good, solid toys, usually made of wood, by companies that have never had recalls for lead contamination. If you want a cheap toy to give to a kid you don't care much about, you probably shouldn't shop here. (And my favorite part is that my son enjoys running up and down the ramp so much that he doesn't even pay attention to the fact that he's in a toy store...) read more

I really like this store. Their toys are high quality, and even though they are small, they have a good selection. The toys are chosen with care, which I appreciate. I'm not a big fan of the cheap, plastic, noisy toys from big box stores. Here you have a fun selection of stuffed animals, including a variety of hand-puppets. Bruder trucks and building kits line the shelves. And they even have board games you can borrow, to see if you like them before purchasing. Yes, the toys here tend to be priced a few dollars more than large stores or online shopping, but it's a neighborhood store that offers great customer service. You can get assistance, gift wrapping, and they go out of their way to get replacement parts if something breaks. We purchase our Bruder trucks there, and a winch handle broke on one of them. I called Thinker Toys and they dealt with Bruder to get me a replacement part, then called me when it was ready for pickup. My son was so happy! This toy store is a happy place. :) read more

It is always tricky to find parking in Multnomah Village but once you park, it's nice to stroll the quaint streets as you make your way to this store. It's fairly large inside leaving lots of room for tons of stuff. Prices are about average- but they have a frequent buyer program which pays off if you shop there a bunch. I am always shopping for trains and their selection is fairly limited considering how much space they have (hence four stars instead of five). But the staff is knowledgeable and friendly and we always love stopping him to look around! read more
