The experience of customizing the sofa was great, but after owning the sofa for just over 2 years, its looking worn and pretty awful. The cushions are pilling, the wood is creaking and the cushions are losing their shape. I've owned custom furniture before (that was significantly cheaper than this) and they held up for 8-9 years with no issue. I would not shop at Build-A-Sofa again. The quality seems on-par with IKEA purchases I've made, which for the most part, have a very low expectation of quality, and are MUCH cheaper. Beware.. read more

Fantastic customer service, and a great product. A truly excellent value. But, there is one major flaw, don't buy tufted seat cushions. The stitching on tufted seat cushions on our sofa continue to unravel. It's a slow undoing of the tufting, which needs to be restiched overtime. Tufting of the back cushions has been fine. If we had not bought the tufted seat cushions, our sofa would be perfect. And even with this flaw, this sofa is still a great value. No other options exist that would allow us to purchase of sofa the size we needed, of this quality, at this price. read more

I was super excited about this place and being able to custom design exactly the sofa I wanted. But I was extremely disappointed with the quality of the work and then afterwards with the complete lack of customer service. I custom ordered a large sectional and paid for an extra long & wide chaise. But they didn't build it to the specs it was supposed to be, they built the standard size frame. But apparently they cut the fabric for the larger size it was supposed to be and used it anyway without acknowledging it clearly wasn't right and needed to be fixed. I waited over 3 months for my couch and it showed up much smaller than what I requested and paid for, but then also the fabric, seams and rivets are WAY off center because they don't match the dimensions of the couch. I called the store and they refused to help because I signed for it before I noticed the problem so then I contacted the owners directly and they completely ignored my repeated attempts to get assistance. I paid well over $3000 for a custom couch that now looks cheap and shoddy. Be careful. read more

Drove past the storefront while furniture shopping, and decided to take a look. What a breath of fresh air! The staff was informative and friendly, not at all pushy, so we were able to look at our leisure. The quality can't be beat, and the prices are amazingly reasonable for the high level of quality. Our biggest concern on this shopping trip was to find something comfortable and durable. We've been through too many sets of the made in China garbage that looks good for a few years, but then breaks down. The quality of the product here is evident the moment you walk into the showroom, and once you sit on some of their pieces, well, they don't need to sell you at all. The product truly sells itself. This is the high quality stuff your parents owned, just upgraded to today's style. Being able to customize everything to your preference truly makes this one of a kind furniture. Once we picked something we liked, the staff did an amazing job of answering our questions, and explaining the specific features of the sectional we picked out. They even suggested an ottoman we would have never considered in a million years, but they were 100% correct about it! Delivery was on time, we were informed repeatedly along the way, and the staff was very careful to not cause any damage to our home. All around, an excellent buying experience, a positive surprise that we did not expect to find in today's typical furniture market. We've received a ton of compliments on our new furniture, someone even commented that it looks like it belongs in a furniture magazine. We may be a bit impartial, but we feel the same way. I bought a couch here and it was an unmitigated and continuous disaster. 1. Didn't get good advice regarding cushions...soft or hard. 2. Fabric on couch was inside out. 3. Cushions collapsed...squashed down within several MONTHS!!!! I would not recommend this company. read more

I had some very specific ideas of what I wanted for a sofa, and had had some difficulty finding what I wanted in furniture stores at an affordable price. When I told Terry what I was looking for, she immediately went to a fabric book and showed me a beautiful fabric that was exactly what I was looking for. It took me awhile to select the exact configuration of the sofa, and she was way beyond patient with me as I dithered, er, ordered. She stayed over an hour past closing with me on a Friday evening to get the order in. Terry and Adriana both went to great lengths to assure that I had my sofa before my first houseguests arrived, including asking for delivery on an off day and time from the norm. From order to delivery it was 4 1/2 weeks. It was very reasonably priced, especially given the customizations I requested. The finished product is absolutely beautiful and extremely comfortable. Delivery guy called me and gave me a one-hour window, arriving at exactly the beginning of the time frame he gave me. A great experience from start to finish. A note about the web site: it's a good idea to visit the web site first to see how things work and get a feel for what they have. The site was somewhat confusing though, and I had to work pretty hard to find what I was looking for. However, it is worth it to persevere, and if you can't find what you're looking for ask the staff in the store, they are helpful and pleasant. read more

First I must say that Terry was a pleasure to work with - she was patient and very helpful. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the rest of the staff!! We were very unhappy with the way our sectional turned out! The fabric we chose was beautiful and looks great in our room, but the quality of the workmanship is VERY POOR!!! I have never had a sectional where you can't flip and rotate the cushions for even wear until this one. They only fit one way and this is unacceptable to me. Too bad they didn't mention this little caveat. Also, the cushions are not straight - some wider in the back, middle or front than others so they don't meet all along the welting. They remade the worst one for me, but said that's the pattern they use and if I want anything else done I would have to pay to ship them back and forth to he factory in California. Bryce, their operations manager here in Austin is rude and condescending, and he is the one who handles all problems. Too bad we didn't meet him before we ordered - never would have done business with this store! Bottom line - we spent what we felt should have gotten us a well made semi-custom sofa and instead got something that looks like it came from a cheap discount store! I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY TO ANYONE!! read more

If you want to create a custom piece of upholstered furniture in every detail and make it fit a specific space with specific requirements, you cannot find a better place to shop and buy. I needed a sturdy leather couch built to match an existing chair--color, length, style, feet, height from floor, seat depth, back height, arm type, stitching versus piping, AND firmness of cushions. I got it all from Build a Sofa--it was effortless and easy, and pleasantly enhanced by the store personnel who go out of their way to serve their customers. Since I am now in my declining years, I believe this sofa will be the last one I ever purchase. However, in the event I live beyond the 20 years this sofa will last, I will go back to Build a Sofa. My wife and I have had our custom-built sofa from BuildASofa for about 10 months now and we absolutely love it. The process for ordering it was a little overwhelming, but that's only because we had to make decisions on every aspect of the sofa (fabric, bottoms, arm rests, backing, firmness, dimensions, feet, etc.). In the end, we were really happy with the quality of the sofa. We've been to IKEA since then for other things and every time we pass their sofas we remark on how much better built ours is. Of course, you'll pay more for your sofa than at IKEA, but I think the quality is worth it. We would totally go to BuildASofa again. read more

Seems like I was up there once per week for 3 months before I finally decideded which way to go. We have a very small family room and I had to customize several measurements on my condo sofa to ensure the perfect fit. I was, of course, on pins an needles until it arrived. It is marvelous! This sofa is excellent quality, extremely comfortable and should hold up to the test of time. I went to about a million (at least if felt like it) furniture shops trying to find the perfect piece. I went in looking to build a leather sectional. I met the owner's wife and she immediately asked "why leather?" I said because I have 4 dogs and I don't want to be dealing with dog hair. She claimed to have 2 dogs and a fabric sofa from Build-A-Sofa. She got fabric samples and showed me the back of the fabric and how they prevent dog hairs from penetrating. I was told pet hair problems were a thing of the past with fabric sofas and naively I believed them. Went back with my husband and met the owner; he confirmed his wife's comments regarding the fabrics amazing ability to essentially repel dog hairs. I never thought to ask what kind of dogs or fabric they had; assumed they were guiding me from their experience and wouldn't intentionally sell me something I didn't want. We paid a good deal of money for our sectional and ottoman covered in a light colored fabric I thought I would be able to wipe the dog hairs off. The ordering and delivery process was super easy and if you don't have pets or care about pet hairs sticking like they were super-glued everywhere I would recommend checking out Build-a-Sofa; the sturdiness of their product seems great. But again, I went there specifically looking for leather which I am told is 50% more, but never even explored the option because the owners seemed so confident their fabrics would not retain dog hair. Immediately after delivery we knew there was a problem. The fabric we ordered our sectional and ottoman in is like velcro or a pet hair magnet. Not only that the hairs weave themselves into the fabric and stick out poking people which again I was assured would not happen. When I contacted the owner weeks after receiving our sectional as to remedies they all involved spending more money and he admitted only leather and micro-suede are recommended to those concerned about pet hair. WHAT!?!? He said I could come in and peruse the samples again to have new cushion covers or caps made. I went back to the store and was basically told by the employee working that day that they would "never" recommend fabric to someone who wanted to avoid dealing with pet hair. The owner and employee asked how I am cleaning the pet hair off and I replied "unsuccessfully." I've used tape, lint brushes, tweezers, nothing works! Feel very foolish for spending some much money I something I very clearly stated from the beginning that my number one goal was to not have to spend my days picking off pet hairs. I spent over four hours trying to get it all and it looked as if I had hardly made a dent. We ordered hideous couch covers from Amazon and now look as if we bought the sectional off Craigslist. Very disappointed --- there is no easy fix, which is why they should not be recommending fabric covered sofas to pet owners who specifically came in for leather. read more
