Great selection of old electronics. I was wanting a turntable and remembered this business had a lot of older tech, and was excited to see they had a whole table of modern and vintage options. They explained what would be needed for an entire setup, and knew the history of the machine I ended up purchasing. I had a blast walking around Far Out today and seeing what they had to offer. Kevin was incredibly helpful and excited to talk about his finds! The space is very truly a thrift shop--bit of everything everywhere in the main room, and it's very fun to walk around and look for little treasures! Kevin explained to me that he rearranges his shop pretty often (he cheekily calls the practice "funk shui") to get people's eyes on different items every time they come in. He tends to get his wares from estate sales, auctions, and considers himself a treasure hunter. And I must agree! Lots of treasures in Far Out, and I loved sifting through them. If you make your way in, you'll likely hear from Kevin that he's open to negotiation and bundling items for reasonable deals. He seems just to be genuinely excited to find cool items and give them new homes. And I appreciate that energy a lot. I came in looking, loosely, for some home decor as my husband and I outfit our home after moving back to Texas from Georgia. But nothing felt quite right on the decor side. But I saw some beautiful pieces and walked out of the store with a vintage book I was excited about. So I consider it a successful trip. :) Make a trip over to check out Kevin's treasures. Two words: over priced. Coming from a family that owns funky "far out" second hand thrift stores..... I walked in here expecting to feel at home. I asked for prices on two separate items and quickly found this isn't a true "thrift store". This is a shop that caters to the hipster population of Austin and is attempting to sell used items at new prices because I'm sure, someone out there, is willing to buy a simple dress that was new in 1980, for $50. I found some bar stools...... wanted $300! Are you shitting me? A scratched up lamp for $75? I don't think so. Go to good will or a yard sale instead. Completely lost touch with the feel and pricing of a true second hand store. Wont be back and disappointed. read more

This place is pretty cool! There's some junk, yes, but also some really really weird and awesome stuff. On my first visit, I scored a gorgeous, ancient looking tri-fold mirror that sits on my vanity, as well as an industrial looking desk lamp. On my second visit, I asked for help finding a worn-in, intricate Oriental rug, and the girl working there brought be to a secret stash of rugs in a truck outside, where she showed me the rug of my DREAMS! It was crazy cheap, too, cheaper and better than anything on craigslist. And they let me put it on hold for a couple days. The employees I've talked to are super friendly and helpful. I like to think of this as the poor man's Uncommon Objects. Which is a great thing! read more

Everything was overpriced....I have seen and even own a couple of items that they have and was confused why they were selling it at that price. Outside was dangerous to walk through and was all just sitting out in the rain getting ruined. Was not a good experience for us. But you decide on your own. This furniture shop was one of our favorites on our most recent trip to ATX. We were greeted by Anthony who was a super chill, colorful character who offered several tips on furniture restoration and provided us with a pamphlet of other vintage stores to check out during our visit to the city. We touched literally everything in the moderately sized, but packed, store and ultimately purchased a midcentury modern style dresser and rug. Anthony assisted in packing our dresser into the car. Besides the excellent variety in home goods, the great service and care for their customers are a few reasons why we will return to Far Out when on the hunt for more furniture. read more

they have an interesting mix of things. A ton of really cheap crappy stuff from what I would guess, is UT move out day side of the road pick ups. Some really interesting finds that are worth looking at, but then you find out it's priced at a super crazy mark up and more like vintage shopping on 5th avenue without the quality. Worth looking at if you're buying all new furniture for a new apartment, but bring $100 and see how far you get. We bought a pretty crappy cedar dining table from them for $75 that I wish we had paid much less for. desperation though. Best bet if you're looking for antiques, vintage and thrift furniture at a reasonable price is not here but goodwill, salvation army, st. vincent de paul's (on SoCo), garage sales, and craigslist. read more

In search of a low cost bookshelf and desk, I tried this place, and it was perfect: 2 for 2! I believe the gentleman who helped was named Kevin. Extremely helpful loading furniture and showing me choices. Everything in the place is unique, and the price range is very big, which is great. You can go utilitarian or get something more fancy. You weave through the rows, and you should plan to spend a little time so you can absorb all the nostalgic curios throughout the store. Additionally, I made two separate trips, and I say with confidence that the store changes almost daily. I also loved how Kevin, also the owner, adds some touches to some pieces. For example, the bookshelf I got had old vintage record covers as part of the shelf's backing. This is an Austin gem! read more

I love this place. They have the best stuff with a variety of price points. I just picked up a jewelry box that I saw a few months ago. I was shocked to see it again since the last time I was in it was brand new and hadn't been priced yet. I think it may have been fate! Anyway, I'm very picky with jewelry boxes. There are a ton of treasures to be found in this store so it's great to peruse every now and again - but also good if you have something specific you are looking for. Last weekend, I went in specifically looking for outdoor furniture and voila! I found the most perfect vintage Crate & Barrel set. (Is vintage Crate & Barrel a thing? It wasn't priced like it was a thing, but I feel like it could be a thing.) The staff were incredibly helpful and actually brought out their sander to show me how easy it would be to sand the table down and make the natural wood under the old stain shine. They charged me a fee so low for delivery that same night, I thought they had made a mistake.... And when they came to deliver everything, they brought along the old cushions and the new set I had purchased, just in case I needed more! They also gave this Austin newb some good tips about music in the area. So friendly and so helpful! My experience with the guys from Far Out Home Furnishings exemplified the reasons why I moved to Austin in the first place - funky, easy, friendly. They even shined earlier that afternoon when a cranky customer blew up for absolutely no reason about lazy millenials and stormed out of the store. If these guys are really lazy millenials, they sure do a good job of pretending not to be when you aren't a dick to them in their own store. This is our second time visiting Far Out Home Fittings, and I'm already wanting to come back for more. My first time was a few weeks ago. I found some awesome pieces, but I couldn't fit one of the chairs into my car. Not only did Kevin give me a great price on my haul, but he also went out of his way to get that chair delivered to my front door. We went in yesterday to browse and ended up with some killer artwork and furniture pieces for an amazing deal, and Kevin managed to comfortably fit every single piece in my car. I've been plenty of places around Austin looking for unique used furniture. This is by far the best. Interesting store, located behind Twin Oaks Center off S Congress. It felt a bit like my grandfathers old "junk room", and the owner was very friendly to boot. Unfortunately, I felt he was very unrealistic in his pricing. You can't get SoCo prices for junk, when you're located in a warehouse. If the store was on the tourist path, it would probably thrive. I moved to Austin about a week ago with two other people and for the past couple days we've been searching high and low for a place like this with some odds and ends to complete our apartment. Before visiting Far Out we visited over 15 other thrift/antique stores that either had a very limited furniture selection or were WAY overpriced. This store fit our needs perfectly and had a huge variety of furniture/lamps/rugs/knick-knacks/etc.. We ended up getting a couple of bar stools and a side table but we can't wait to come back in the future to see what else they have available. The people who were working here were not overbearing at all and were more than happy to give us a deal since we were buying multiple things. read more

We really wanted to like this place. Just the type of entertaining shopping we like. They do have a very eclectic assortment of things, nicely displayed although crowded. Just what you would expect. However, the prices are way off base. We were told a lot of things are negotiable so we looked for the chairs we were hoping to find. Told there was more stuff out back so we explored & found numerous chairs in the back. All in various shapes, sizes & colors. We had to go ask prices & after some "research" they wanted $140 for 2 chairs that were nothing special. Non negotiable. These were very plan chairs. Could be bought new for less than $40 each. Guy that helped us said he really didn't want to sell them anyway because they were in his event space. Ok. Then put a sign there. He wasn't really friendly about it either. It's true that I miss their old location but now they have franken- furniture (ask to see it) that's super funky and mattresses. I have to say that they really try to help you out by modifying or changing something on a piece so that it works for you. Employees are friendly and fun to talk to.
