A sacred community staple for loving atmosphere and delicious beverages. Bula truly is a hidden gem cafe tucked away outside of downtown St.Pete. They have the best teas and coffee in town. You also get to experience a part of history visiting here as Bula is St.Petes original and first Kava bar! The people working and visiting here are so incredibly authentic- it's hard to find anything quite like it. I love Kava bars and in all my experiences traveling visiting them. There is no place like this gem. It's a great place to hang out for the day and truly do whatever. They have a cozy outdoor patio, bar area, indoor cafe, and they recently added an addition in the back with a covered patio area with a fire pit and outdoor couches. They even have a cool game room area that you can hang out in to get some peace and quiet if you're working on a hot Florida day. Honestly didn't think I'd catch myself enjoying a cava bar. Had the bartender make me a Coffee Kratom (not on the menu) and it was just the way I like to intake some kratom. Well you need to be able to appreciate what kava & kratom really is. Your NOT going to see it's effects the first few times and there is truth in tolerance breakdown. The more you have the less you'll need as you start out. There are also fancy cocktail versions for those that need sweetness or something to hide the bite. It is made with the root of the plants and yes it's numbing to the tongue and lips which is the tip of how it can work on the central nervous system. There are different strains for example I prefer 50-50 which is 1/2 body.. 1/2 mind. This is a nice blend of I want some level of alertness but a relaxed body too. It can def compare to the drunk feelings alcohol gives you without the hangover the next day. Bula has a bohemian vibe very welcoming and warm; from the friendly kava tenders to the patrons. These is plenty of covered outdoor deck space with a pool table and games. Sometimes you can get a free pizza when a patron is kind enough to bring home some takeout! Plenty of room for the pups as it's dog friendly. There's karaoke on some nights or trivia. Plenty of great events and socializing to be had. They have kombucha on tap and once again acquired taste here it's fermented! So if your open minded and like to try kratom or kava , keep coming. I've been coming here for years. It's usually for a quick grab and go. It's my favorite place to use as a workstation in St. Pete. It's conveniently located off the interstate and only a few blocks from great restaurants, museums, and shopping. Seating is plenty. The bar has an intimate feel. Music in the background and power outlets under the bar. If you want to spread out, the "back" open air seating area has a vast amount of options. A bar, 4 tops, couches. Large TV for films or video games from the kids. The one draw back is the lack of climate control. If you don't mind fans in warm Florida climate, you'll be alright. The front bar is much cooler than the back seating area. For the back area, a suggestion would be to add a couple of more fans, as there isn't enough air flow. That being said, I can't hold that against them. I definitely treasure the little tropical island escape. I appreciate the management and the staff for keeping the vibes authentic. read more

But this morning I had a migraine that wouldn't go away so I ordered a red kratom, I received a green kratom on accident so I emailed the manager or the owner and he said if I just place a small order, even just for an espresso shot ..he'll throw in 4 red full-sized kratom teas!! ... The atmosphere at Bula is super chill and everyone is super nice! The last time I was there I made friends with someone who brought their switch and we played for a while! If you put your phone down and say hi and introduce yourself to people, you will make some new friends... The seating is outdoor so sometimes it's really hot and humid. But hey it's as close as we can get to Hawaii so I'll take it! This is a true gem.. Everyone takes shells together and says bula! I'm sure you've read some of the other reviews. This place is a vibe. Cool outdoor seating around the kava bar on one side, indoor area for ordering coffee, and a lounge section in the back all give Bula a communal lanai vibe. Everyone is super friendly most likely due to the calming effects of the kava! We read on the website that if you have never tried kava before they will gift you cup. True to their word, we each received a generous sample. For those that are not familiar, kava is a plant that is ground up similar to coffee and made into a beverage. It is said to give a calming, mellow effect that helps with anxiety and makes one more sociable. Very similar to having a cocktail or two without the hangover! The liquid itself was a bit viscose and had a bitter, earthy taste. Not terrible but the best flavor. What they don't tell you is it can make your tongue fuzzy and numb which made me think I was having an allergic reaction! When my bf mentioned the same reaction I determined it was normal. Not sure I'm going to become an avid kava drinker anytime soon, but it was an experience! Oh and the coffee here is really excellent. My iced dirty chai latte was outstanding! read more

I just enjoyed a perfect Friday evening at Bula. I love the lounge area outside. A perfect spot to hang out with friends or just chill with the pup. Also, I like that they are open late (until 2 Thursday-Saturday). I tried Kratom for the first time and I was quite surprised, it wasn't too bad! I do recommend getting what I got if you need a little sweetness to get through it. I got a Kratom with sugar-free strawberry syrup and agave. My husband gets Kava (which he gets often) and loves them. But it does make your tongue numb, which I soon realized after having a taste of his. Bartender Chris was very welcoming even though I could tell he was overwhelmed with how busy it was. He chatted a bit with me and my friends, which was nice. I personally am not much of a Kratom, Kava drinker so I'll probably stick to the Kombucha they serve. Regardless, I will definitely be coming back! read more

Bula Kafe is a relaxing hippie tea lounge in St. Pete that serves kava tea. The concept sounded cool. Kava is consumed throughout the Pacific Ocean cultures of Polynesia. The Kava tea is made from plant roots and has sedative and anesthetic properties. I drank the "kool-aid" and walked out of Bula Kafe a non-believer. In my opinion the tea tastes disgusting and it is really expensive. Four small bowls of kava and two coconut waters ran us almost $30. I cannot believe I paid to drink something that resembled and tasted like green sewage water!!! I was a little weirded out that the tea numbed my lips and teeth. I went with three other people and none of us felt the "relaxing results" of the tea. If you plan to drink alcohol the same day you consume kava then you will probably get sick. I made the mistake of having a cocktail about three hours after consuming the tea and I tossed my cookies 45 minutes later (Sorry for the visual.) Even if I had enjoyed the tea I don't think I would drink kava on a regular basis. Apparently heavy usage of kava can result in liver damage. If you want to relax there are other options. I arrive at Bula Kafe to find that the bar is manned by a tender named Conner, who dislikes me personally. For ten minutes I stand unacknowledged, and watch six people arrive and place their orders. I get Conner's attention and ask to speak with him when he's finished his current task. He looks at me without responding. I wait another five minutes and watch five more people served in a timely, friendly fashion. When Conner addresses the entire bar asking "Who wants a shell?" I leave, and ask a friend to order on my behalf. She returns with a drink in under two minutes. I have only ever been kind and courteous to this business and it's employees, and my money and time are as valuable as the next customer's. If I wanted this kind of treatment I'd go back to high school instead of going to a kava bar. Everything about Bula Kafe, and everyone that has served me here in the last few years, has been fast, fair, and enjoyable, with the exception of this experience and this bartender. The food is great at a great price, and it is a nice little place. What kept me from rating a 5 is the allowance of smoking. This is the only place I have seen allowing it since the pandemic hit in 2020. It was very uncomfortable, not to mention the concerns this presents during these times. There are plenty of nice smoking areas within the plaza especially the nice courtyard right outside the door. You would have more repeat business by making this change as I have seen several similar comments from patrons. read more

If this is a new experience, come with an open mind! I arrived on a Thursday evening around 9pm. There was a decent crowd, not too heavy though. The bartender hooked us up with Green Kratom drinks that we bought and a free shell of Kava. Although the Kratom drink tastes AWFUL and bitter at first, even with sweetner, you can't knock the amazing, light, relaxing effects it has. My experience was a bit euphoric, which was duly noticeable whenever I closed my eyes, with a nice, noticeable body relaxation feeling. My epiglottis felt a bit numb, but that was it for negative feelings. The Kava bowl was nice, earthy and smooth. It was not bad at all, but definitely an acquired taste. My two stops at Bula were kind of inconsistent, but it might be because I'm not their main clientele (i.e. I went for coffee and not kava). The first time was in the afternoon and I had to have someone meet us inside. The friend I was with was turned off by the large dog that was hanging out inside off leash. I ordered my drink and shuffled out not thrilled with customer service, but happy with my latte. The second time was an evening and after standing around inside for a few minutes, someone said they would be with us and never showed up again. We ended up leaving and ventured to Pom Pom's for a pot of tea instead. The environment is definitely chill here. The only seating is outdoors, either at a bar or in their little lounge. I wanted to love it, but I'm just sort of... Apathetic. My first time was probably a 3.5, and my second time was a 1, so it averages out to a 2 for me. Again, that's for coffee, not kava, so your mileage may vary. read more

First timers always get a free kava shell (shot) and they have free shell promotions on certain days (Tuesday is buy one get one, Thursday bring your pup, and Friday you get one for giving a high five!) I feel relaxed indeed after gulping 5 shells of kava bottoms up every time. I feel sleepy almost. Good thing my wife is driving. I can feel my shoulders loosening up and I can breathe deeeply. More like, i have to. My colds started dripping my nose and had to go to the bathroom. Kava must have an expectorant properties. Caveat: I felt like puking because of the bitter aftertaste. I was praying that i could burp. The coffee was a good chaser but it is not that strong. Well, not to my preference. So the half and half creamer drowned the watery coffee taste. I am having trouble typing this review on my phone as my eyelids tend to close up. So yeah, i feel relaxed. Yes, sorry, I did say that already. 30 mins out and the kava's effect has not worn out. I thoroughly enjoyed coming here! I was new to the kava community but they welcomed me with open arms. I felt very relaxed after having my kava drink mainly in my body. They also have tea and coffee. UPDATE: it's been about 5 hours since I've had the kava and red vein relaxation tea. Definitely felt relaxed and tired so took a nap but woke up not feeling well and threw up 5x since. We strolled in this morning to get a cappuccino and noticed a bar-like atmosphere and saw all these signs about kava and asked the bartender/manager Dave about it. He gave us the whole background and told us it helps with anxiety and depression which seemed super interesting to me because I love natural remedies. He told us it tastes like "dirt water" so that threw us a bit but he gave us a free bowl and everyone at the bar took part and cheers saying "Bula" which means to long life and good health. He said they have all natural teas for relaxation so I decided to try one and got the "red vein" tea. In all honesty it tasted worse than the kava but I still drank it all because planning a wedding I need to stay relaxed.
