They do have a clearance section towards the back of the store, but most of the stuff there was actually past its best before date. If you love gourmet stinky cheeses, they had lots! As for me, I'll just stick to brie, harvati and other benign to the nose cheeses thank you very much ;) Fun store to poke around. Lots of free parking.

I'm a knitter!) and one of those stoneware cookie molds which came with a recipe. This was on sale at a good price; I've seen it at double that elsewhere in the city. Did you know that there's a difference in the mechanisms of a pepper and salt mills? Apparently the salt can rust and corrode a pepper mill, and the pepper is too hard for a salt mill. Whodathunk?! I actually went in looking for coffee pots. The ones we have at work have been seriously used and abused. I'm also feeling the need for an espresso or latté machine, and was hoping I might find one of those nifty combo things here. Turns out that the design I'm thinking of is a bit passé. Too bad for me! However, the good coffee makers they have here are too good for work (read: expensive), and could almost be professional, like for coffee shops. So, I will have to keep shopping. Yum. You won't find cheap souvenir T shirts here but items like local honey from numerous provinces, Saskatchewan jams, bison pate, Ice wine flavored teas--a truly dazzling assortment of authentic Canadian goods, for every budget, and from the familiar to the different. If your loved ones have had enough of maple, impress them with Ice-wine syrup then. Unlike the Ottawa duty free shop, which only has the cheaper version, Canada in a Basket has the premium one also. It must be good since I bought it and sis hasn't shared any with me. If you have an OCD friend you need relief from for a few hours, bring them here and let your buddy pore through what seems like an endless array of items, food items, jewelry, clothing etc. While I I don't envy the proprietor at inventory time, I am grateful she took the time to amass such an array of uniquely wonderful items. Canada in a Basket will even customize a basket for you and ship it, hence the name. Seriously, there was so much here, I was actually getting dizzy just looking at a few shelves of jams, and I hadn't even ventured to the Byward Market bars prior. You don't need to agonize over the meager pickings at the airport duty free shop. Come to this fun place to shop for Canadian souvenirs.

In my defense, I can justify my mistake by explaining that it is INSIDE the Tweed and Hickory store, although it's a separate entity. Tweed & Hickory is an upscale clothing and home decor store, which used to have a very decent kitchen supplies section that went by the wayside when The Unrefined Olive came into the space. Tasting bars for other foods have been around for a while; beer tastings come to mind; bakeries might offer a similar event. I have also been to another tasting bar for olive oil and balsamic vinaigrettes - but that was in BC. I didn't realize that there were such a thing here in Ottawa. Although your grocery stores offer a variety of oils and flavoured vinegars, I don't think they are quite at par with these... (Farm Boy has their own line of finer oils). It being summer right now, The Unrefined Olive has berry-flavoured olive oils - strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, and maybe others. I tried a clear one which was very pungent. I've started putting these on salads at home, as a dressing. And if you've ever been to finer Italian restaurants, they might offer bread dipping bowls with this type of flavoured oil and vinegar. The Unrefined Olive also offers a package of 4 small samples which would be ideal to give as a gift. While I was at it, I found humongous olives stuffed with feta and pickled in vermouth! There was also Canadian honey for sale. This is a great place to find hostess gifts. I will definitely be back.

There are little steel cups that you can use to sample everything (except for the premium oils such as the truffle oils). I left with a Harissa olive oil, as the taste of the spicy peppers was prominent in the oil, but also had a delicious smoky taste. It would be amazing in pasta salads or drizzled on top of pizza; however, prices are quite steep, so I would use the oils sparingly! (For example, a 200ml of basil infused olive oil is $5.99 at La Bottega/Nicastro, whereas here it is $14.99...so definitely a splurge)! Overall, I would come here if feeling splurgy (or was more baller, haha), otherwise I would probably stick with olive oils from regular stores.

According to the description, the florentine is made with the Stubbe family recipe of local honey, almonds, and orange peel, plus a thin layer of dark chocolate and plenty of sliced almonds on top with honey. It was delicious! Despite the honey, I didn't find it too sweet. I love nuts and dark chocolate, especially together. The cookie part was buttery and you could definitely taste the orange peel, but it wasn't overpowering. Nice crunch, but not crumbly. Would've been perfect with a hot cup of black tea. I wish I bought more. Would love to try other Anna Stubbe chocolates and treats. Their bonbons are beautiful!

I didn't want to tell him; I was shopping for him :-). But he found me! When I came in, the uncluttered displays had me hooked. I like that they offer a few of any kind, without overwhelming the senses, as opposed to having trays and trays of the same things - so that each choice is not special. That's not the case here! The treats are beautifully laid out. I've indicated that the price range is moderate, although one might say it's pricey. These wonderful truffles are in the range of about $2.30 each which is about average for individual quality chocolates like these, and some of them are hand painted. However, ALL of them are beautiful to look at, as well as being very tasty. I bought a few as a gift. And he seems to be enjoying them. Oops, he might be reading this! Happy birthday, Honey! LOL
