i bought my car about a year and a half ago from Tommy Neutz when he was running the car dealership…read moreacross the street from this repair shop. recently he sold that and is exclusively running this business now. when that change happened, i got hold of him and asked him if he would still be doing my warranty work and would still look at my car before i have to drive it out of town like before, and he said yes, nothing had changed. now i've had a personal tragedy. my 25yo daughter took her own life, and i have to drive nearly 3 hours away to deal with things there in a week. so i got hold of Tommy today and told him this and asked him to look at my car first and he refused. he also said i'd have to go somewhere else for my warranty work. apparently all over a disagreement we had over some work i thought should be done just after i got the car which i thought was behind us, especially since he had only recently reiterated that he would be doing my work and all would be the same. he waited til i have no time to find another reputable place to do any work if a check finds it's needed and left me out in the cold. and this after he even invited me to church with him when i bought the car. i cannot believe he is leaving me in the lurch like this and not keeping his word. i know a lot of people think the world of Tommy, and i did too, but this shows me who he really is. i'm sorry to say it, but it's true. and now i will have to figure out what to do about this on top of what has happened to my baby.

They pointed out a few issues with each vehicle and the likely failure/necessary maintenance timing and approximate pricing to fix each one, as well as their opinion on each car versus asking price/mileage/age. Both of the folks I spoke with were friendly and knowledgeable. Although I had never been to this mechanic before, they treated me like I was a longtime loyal customer. The inspections were priced very fairly, in my opinion--$60 as of fall 2025--and their evaluations helped me negotiate an excellent purchase price. I won't hesitate to bring my vehicle to be serviced here in the future, whether it's for a simple oil change or a more complex issue.

When I picked up the vehicle, my total came to $1,806.92 -- about $500 more than the original quote. I was never contacted to approve any additional repairs or charges. After reviewing the invoice, I noticed I was charged for a part that was never installed. It took five days of contacting the owner to get $135 refunded for that item. I also noticed I was billed $300 for a part that costs around $145 at Advance Auto Parts. When I asked for clarification about the additional $500 beyond the original quote, I was told to speak with the shop manager. The manager is the one who authorized the charges in question, and I never received a clear explanation. The repair involved a timing chain and camshaft gear -- a common issue on this vehicle. While the car is now running properly, the lack of communication, additional unapproved charges, and billing for a part that wasn't installed made this a frustrating experience. I don't mind paying for quality work. I do mind being charged more than agreed without authorization and having to chase down a refund for something that shouldn't have happened in the first place.

I pulled into an O'Reily's (see 5star review for that!) and Jay there recommended me to Carson at Val's, who were open on Sunday. My car made it there Sunday morning. Carson took me in right away and helped diagnose my car for a very reasonable fee, as well as gave me price estimates for the repairs. Due to other work I had recently had done, we decided that the best thing for me was actually to tow back to Indy. Carson gave me some paper work and their assessment results so that I could have some more info for my home garage. This kind of service, especially for an out of state, stressed out, traveller and then they didn't even get the big job -- it's just stellar and SO appreciated. I found another guy to look at it, and I showed him the bill from Derby City Tires and the amount I paid for previous work, and the guy told me how Derby City Tires overcharged me so much money! Also...some of the parts were not even on the car!!! What a rip off. Never again! I kind of felt that I got ripped off, but I had no way of proving it.
