Beautiful golf course, excellent conditions and experience except for rough so thick that the starter tells you that you're going to lose golf balls. The design and contours and yardages are challenging enough, this would be a world class experience if the rough was cut down a bit. Can't strongly recommend spending $130 until then. Also: the carts were in rough shape, ours had a piece of tape covering a tear in the seat on the driver's side. Not a good look. read more

3 stars for a somwhat-overrated golf course. My wife and I have been checking out public golf courses around Virginia and Maryland each weekend for years. One of the courses that we always saw ranked really high and heard high praise was Bulle Rock. Located in Havre De Grace about 30 minutes north of Baltimore, we decided to book a round at Bulle Rock one recent weekend and see if the place really was a destination. We arrived at the course (which you get to by going through an alternating one-way road with a light) and found a course that indeed has some fairly pretty views. We parked our car, went inside to check in (the check in people were pretty forgettable and seemed uninterested in us as soon as they saw a Golfpass reservation), went to get a cart (the cart guys were pretty nice), and headed over to the driving range to warm up. The range is pretty far from the clubhouse (you go past the first hole and keep driving a while), but it is a grass range that includes balls and was in pretty good condition. After warming up, we went over to start our round. The starter (who was pretty friendly) gave us a few pointers and told us something that others had told us for the hour or so before our round: the rough is really tough and thick. We started playing our round, and yeah the rough is indeed really rough and thick to the point it felt like I was playing a U.S. Open. I'm not sure why the course decided to go this route because, as a weekend golfer, I'm not going to hit perfect shots every time. This actually made the round pretty frustrating as I would hit several pretty solid tee shots that would take a small bounce off the fairway and completely disappear. I hit one tee shot on 11 that I watched land in the fairway by the bunker and take a small roll, I drove up, and the ball had completely disappeared into the grass. While the greens and other aspects of the course were in solid shape, I just didn't really get why this course gets so much love compared to other public courses in the Maryland area (e.g., Hampshire Greens, Maryland National). Especially considering the two hour drive from DC, The annoyingly tough course part would have just knocked one star off for me, but what knocked another star off was the BR Grille. Now, don't get me wrong: the food was fine and good compared to other golf course-based restaurants. What really struck me was the environment. It was mostly filled with members who had no interest in chatting (aside from talking about the tough rough) and servers who either weren't interested in working or mostly flirting with members for bigger tips or guys who came in around their age. My wife and I mostly felt like an afterthought both at the turn and when we went in after. This wouldn't be a big deal at an average course, but for somewhere with all of this hype, it was a little disappointing. Overall, Bulle Rock is a fine golf course with nice views that I wouldn't mind playing more if I lived in the area. However, for anyone living an hour away, this is more of a "check the box" spot that doesn't quite live up to the hype. read more

After a couple of changes in ownership, Bulle Rock is still one of if not my favorite course in Maryland. The course was designed by Pete Dye. It's tough but isn't unreasonable. The LPGA hosted a major championship here for several years and had to play it at under 6500 yards apparently. The 18th hole is a brute but is a fantastic finishing hole. The new management also dropped the price in 2018 and now it's a must play. I used to try and get out here once a year but now it'll be a multiple times a year treat for me. Course conditions have been pretty much perfect every time I have played here. Only once were the greens a little slow and that was during a rough heat wave. It also hasn't been too busy. The only homes you see on the course are on the first hole which is a nice change. It is walkable which is a plus, but you will need a cart to get to the range. The range is spacious and the grass is awesome. There is a small putting green near the clubhouse. This is the one to use. The bigger one near the first tee is too flat for anything you'll see on the course. The chipping/bunker area is amazing. Tons of space to work on every shot you'll ever need. I could spend an afternoon just on that. I just can't say enough good things about this place. And I can't wait to go back. read more

This review is for the BR Grille: Really surprised that at 230p on a GORGEOUS Saturday afternoon the place/course wasn't packed. There was a table of 6 ladies, one couple and me and my buddy. The view from outdoor seating was pleasant, but not a whole lot of golfers to see. They were there, but def no waiting and no lines Maybe at that hour it was clearing out? Only ordered a salad and cheese quesadilla, but it seemed to take longer than necessary for those two items, and not a packed house. The salad was good, nice size, crisp veggies, but the quesadilla left something to be desired. Cheese had zero taste. Not salty not tangy not anything. Just bland. Worse than sliced single wrapped cheese from the grocery store. I got ?5 decent sized slices w a side of sour cream and sauce, but just wasn't a great quesadilla Wine was ok and all my buddy ordered was a beer. Total was around $25 The menu listed a lot of "food deals" during the week. But not sure I'd go out my way to come eat. We happened to be house hunting and it was convenient Also. We considered asking them to turn on the outside ceiling fan. But it didn't appear that anyone had removed spider and cobwebs since last season, so thought it best to leave the fans alone. Highly suggest that eating areas ceilings be swept before seating patrons Service was just ok. Young man followed us to our seats, dropped off the menus and walked away without a word. The waitress was nice enough and after we asked, gave us the WiFi password. We had to ask for water. If I'm in the neighborhood looking again, I might give it another go. The greens superintendent should be congratulated for maintaining the grounds under this summer's conditions. The rest of our experience was very disappointing for a $100+ round of golf. We arrived to see a notice of cart paths only. One of our players has a heart condition but couldn't get a handicap flag without certification from a physician. Wouldn't need the flag if it wasn't cart paths only (without prior notification) which was possible since our tee time was 10:30. We were told that we would be supplied with a book for hole descriptions and distances but that didn't happen. We were told that a water cart would be coming around since there was no beverage cart. Saw the water cart once on the 8th hole. The carts had no GPS for distances or rain covers for our clubs in case of rain which we got on the 18th hole. Have played there in the past with fair treatment but the current clubhouse staff was very rude, short with explanations and spoke to us as if they were annoyed by our presence interrupting their chance to play since there weren't many players for the day. While waiting for the water cart, we notice 3 staff members playing the front nine. They should have been riding the course to offer assistance. My conclusion is that the greens staff are the only professionals and that the head pro needs to evaluate his staff closely. read more

This course is currently over priced! The fairways are in great shape, but the greens have not fully recovered from early aeration. They are not the worst I have played, but not what I would expect for the price I paid to play. Not smooth as I was told 2 days before by the pro shop and slow maybe a 9-10 on the stimp meter. We had our wedding reception at Bulle Rock and were thrilled with the venue and services! Tammy Winner was incredibly friendly and a pleasure to work with. She went out of her way to make sure we were taken care of - including putting together a last-minute tasting when we were in town visiting, letting us come in early a few days before the wedding to decorate, and making sure all the details were in order leading up to and through the reception. We had about 170 guests, which was close to the comfortable max for the main banquet hall. The food was very yummy (appetizers - crab dip, pot stickers, meatballs, cheese, veggies; dinner - choice of London broil with mushrooms or grilled chicken with merlot demi glace), the space itself was lovely, and the surroundings were beautiful - even in January. We got some great bridal party photos before the wedding at the covered "bridge" nearby, as well as some nice sunset photos right outside the reception hall. For everything that was included, the price was quite reasonable - especially compared to other similar options nearby. Would highly recommend! read more

This review is for the golf shop at Bulle Rock Golf Course. I have never felt so uncomfortable in a place before. My mom and I came to get a Christmas giftcard for my father who adores golfing. This was our first time here , and did not know where to park. There were no signs, workers to help us, nada. We park in frot of the shop, and as soon as we get out of the car, this worker in a golf cart appears out of nowhere and screams in a NASTY tone of voice, you can't park here!!!! Okay geez, no need to be mean about it. First strike. We walk into the store and go to the desk to ask about the gift card. The man who was helping us was interrupted man behind us who clearly didn't care that there were people being helped in front of him. So rude. He had this privileged attitude and the man at the service desk would pause from helping us to help him. Says a lot about their clientele. Second strike. Finally, my mom pays for the card and we head out. The man who was helping us forgot to give her change, we all make mistakes, but this did not seem like a mistake. Third strike we're out! read more

Ah~~ What can I say about this golf course? Well, they host the McDonald Women's Championship there (last in 2005) and no wonder, it is BEAUTIFUL~~! It is an upscale public golf course located in upper Maryland going towards PA. It is little out of the way but it is definitely worth it. The greens fee for 18 hole is about $150 per person (it depends on the season and time, my tee time was on a weekday at 9:10am.) Once you arrive, you would check in with the attendants at the bag drop area. You park in the front of the club house (gorgeous! they also have wedding receptions there too) and go down to the pro shop in the bottom floor to pay. The drive range is little far off from the rest of the course so you definitely need a cart. The greens are impeccable but fast and tricky. Their fairways are more well kept than greens on some of the local golf courses. I haven't been to the restaurant but the bar area has nice sitting arrangements where you really don't need to make a reservation for the restaurant if you don't get a chance to. There is really nothing around the golf course so you are better off eating on the course. The bartenders/waiters are really nice and attentive. The restaurant and bar has patio surrounding it, so if you want to look out to the 9th hole green of 10th hole tee (or just to smoke) you can always sit on the patio. I would suggest making reservation about a week ahead, morning tee times are hard to come by. They close every Monday so that the course can rest. read more

One of the best courses in the region - although this appears pretty pricey at $130, I think this Pete Dye course is worth every penny. Wonderfully manicured course with beautiful contours. The fairways are better than some greens I have played on! The greens themselves are small and challenging. Very fast and true. Staff are awesome and do their best to look after you and the on course staff keeps up the pace of play. It is a very challenging course - some very fun holes, but my picks would be #2, #6, #9 and obviously, #18. I'll definitely play again. read more

Absolutely loved this course! This is a fantastic day of golf. We did a "brother's outing" here and we had some odd/special requests. They handled them all perfectly. We had caddies and they were fantastic. the staff was incredibly friendly. They made up a bag tag for my father who wasn't even playing - just riding along. nice touch! The course itself if gorgeous. The online scorecard scared the crud out of me. It seems they added a "gold" set of tees since it originally opened. (Black, Gold, Blue, White, Red). My younger brother and I played from the golds and my older brother played from a mix of white and red. He would have liked to see a "green" forward tee in between the white and red tees. I'd have to agree that it seems like a need.... however that would make it a total of SIX tees... seems like a ton to me. Heck... 5 seems like a lot. But the course is pretty fair for the most part. It definitely helped to have caddies. We did what they told us and avoided a lot of Pete Dye's traps - of which there are many. The only hole that felt a little "much" to us was 18 - which is just crazy-long for a par 4, and there's water all down the left hand side. Yikes. We expected the round to take about 4.5 to 5 hours. It took far less. We were only a 3some but we didn't play fast. Never saw the group behind us and barely ever saw the group in front of us. Never waited on a shot after the 1st tee. Staff was super friendly. The guys at the pro shop were great and very welcoming. The cart-girl was incredible. I was starving and went and grabbed food from her and then suddenly realized that my money was in my golf bag with my caddie - who was about 100 yards down the hole at that point (she was driving the course in reverse so it wasn't a simple thing to just drive up to him). She just said it was no problem and that she would get me on her next go-around. Maybe other people see that as normal but it was first for me - and I've been golfing for over 30 years! We ate a meal after the round in the SILKS restaurant above the club house. We got $5 vouchers (1 per person) through the pro shop) so the meal wasn't too pricy. They food was good. The fries were AWESOME. The beverage selection seemed good and we enjoyed ourselves. I think this is a great course and it's worth putting on your bucket list. Our caddies told us that the fall is the best time to play because the leaves change color and the place just becomes a visual masterpiece. I played in July and it was pretty friggin' nice. I can't say much about the golf here but can say something about the food. After a night of drinking at Duclaws, a few buddies and I went to Bulle Rock since it was near one guy's condo. When we sat at the bar, we were quickly served by Mike and given menus for food. Definitely had some interesting choices - I settled for a junior burger since I didn't want to have a lead bomb in my gut and the other friends had the crab pretzel and lobster bisque. I also had the french onion soup but wasn't overly impressed with it - it was par for FOS. Since I still have six more months assigned to Aberdeen, I'll be sure to stop by if I have to crash there overnight. Not bad at all. read more

FIVE hour round of golf in 90 degree weather - as usual, the marshals merely state that it's slow play - no kidding. Their stated time for an expected round is 4 hours and 40 minutes. Even though they've lowered their prices we've decided it's no longer worth it. Course is in very good shape but there are no particularly spectacular hole designs and way too much fescue grass - no problem if you always hit the fairways - we can't!! read more

Rick and his staff produce an excellent product time after time. Drinks and snacks at the turn are very reasonably priced. Our meal afterwards is always great. The golf course is the shining star though. Our caddy, Hamilton, did a great job telling us where to hit and where to putt. The course has a wonderful layout with a wide range of tees to play for all abilities. Great greens too. They run true as can be. I've wanted to play Bulle Rock for quite a while. It certainly looked like a great course from watching the McDonald's Championship. It was designed by Pete Dye and has gotten a lot of great press -- so I had some pretty big expectations (which I think is fair given the $150 price tag)..... The course didn't live up to the hype in my mind -- the finishing stretch is beautiful and there are some great holes -- but I think Pete Dye's designs in Kohler really outshine Bulle Rock. read more

I have golfed here and eaten here. The golf is great it is a bit pricey, but the course is well maintained and is very challenging. As far as the food goes.. The has recently been renovated, and the changes were for the better. The food is better, the service was bad initially, but it is improving. You get to overlook the golf course if you sit outside. They now have games that you can play at the table. I have been here about 20 times so I obviously like something about it. I prefer to sit in the bar area rather than the restaurant. read more

I took my group of 36 people to a Christmas dinner at Bulle Rock Bar and Grill and we had an incredible time. The food was plentiful and delicious - Potatoes au Gratin, grilled asparagus, London Broil in Mushroom glaze. After we unloaded everything we went into the pro shop expecting to be able to get a rain check for nine holes, and was told "abosolutely NOT, we did not close the course, you CHOSE to leave the course". I have enjoyed many rounds at Bulle Rock over the years, but yesterday was not one of them. First, if you're driving range isn't going to be open on a particular day, you should let people know when they make their tee time. Second, the course did not warrant the $74 greens fee. This time of year leaves happen, but there didn't seem to be a high degree of clearance given the premium fee. That said, the bigger issues were the condition of the sand traps and greens. Both were poorly maintained. Lastly, on top of this, the starter/Marshall was a complete a$$hole. He gave us hell about being 5 minutes(yes 5 minutes)slow on our round (even with some holes being cart path only) at the turn, and then after we had rushed to 10, had to wait for a group he sent in front of us. He could have handled things so much better than he did.I love the layout of this course, but will not rush to go back with so many great and friendlier options in the area. read more

Just played this course with a partner at my firm. All I can say is I was pleasantly surprised. Loved the 18th! It was challenging as hell with the moat around the green. Maryland has few really tough courses so I wasn't expecting the challenge. Really tough tee positions but nothing I couldn't handle. There seemed to be a much smaller selection on the menu. The food was not very good. And instead of seating us in the dining room, we were put in the bar right under the television. Very sad to see such an iconic Maryland course fall into such disrepair. There are significant burned out portions of the fairways and tee boxes (especially on the back, specifically 15 and 17). Very disappointing - it used to be incredibly pristine. I don't know if it's cost cutting or weather/environmental factors, but the course simply isn't in the shape it once was and what it became known for. I would play here again because the design is still spectacular and the greens are in good shape, but overall it's sad and disappointing to see the condition of the course deteriorate as it has. read more

Love the atmosphere and comfy booths with squishy pillows (Felt like laying in my favorite chair at home). Dessert was $5, a little bit burnt on the bottom brownie with vanilla ice cream and Carmel/chocolate sauce drizzled on top. As great as the view is out on the deck which overlooks the golf greens and water hazards, the food was not up to par. I ordered the lobster pot pie as it sounded intriguing. I could not have been more disappointed. Inside the soggy crust was a gelatinous goo that was all but inedible. It was the worst meal I have ever had eating out. We played Bulle Rock today on a 60 degree day in early February. The course was wet so it played considerably longer than the advertised yardage. I've played it in season with the fescue "up" and the greens running fast on subtly contoured greens. That was not the case today. Winter golf isn't "in season" golf but then neither are "winter rates" the same as what we'd pay in June. Pete Dye isn't everyone's favorite but he has designed a number of courses that hold my interest and some that have become highly respected tracks. Bulle Rock may not have an island green but it has most of the other bells and whistles. The holes are visually striking. Creative shot making is a must. Most every hazard save the quarry on the back nine is right there in front of you. Number 18 is a classic finishing hole. The par 3s are uniformly challenging. The 5s are anything but uniform. The course is a 4 star proposition in mid-winter and a definite 5 in season. I've seen some negative reviews of staff but in my experience and on this day, they could not have been more personable. The restaurant? Let's just say that the beers were cold and the crab soups were excellent. I'll be back! I hope they think about building another 9 or even another 18. That was a thought maybe 10 years ago. This is a gem. read more

First things first, this is my first ver Yelp review; today's experience was so ridiculous that I needed to post. I played today teeing off at 11:40am; the two foursomes ahead of us had no groups in front of them, proceeded to play their rounds in 5 hours and 10-20 minutes. As a result we finished out round at almost 4:45pm ( 5 hours). I complained to the course rangers a couple of times, nothing was done. We played so slow, that the guy who teed off at 1:30pm - 2 hours after our tee time, caught up to us and we played the last four holes with him. After the round finally ended, I politely asked to speak to the manager in the pro shop, as 5 plus hours on a nearly empty golf course is ridiculous. I then had the pleasure of meeting the head pro, who was the most obnoxious individual I have ever met in any sort of hospitality setting. He told me that expected pace of play is 5 hours and that this is a big golf course unlike "my dad's country club" (I'm almost 30). I informed him that MY course is also a big course and probably more challenging than Bulle Rock and rounds are played in 4 hours. He then shoved the cash drawer in my face and told me to take my money back. I informed him that was not my intent. He told me the good thing about Bulle Rock is that he doesn't have to deal with people (me) that he doesn't like, then he said he would be calling my home club to tell them how I am representing the club. I was polite and composed the whole time, so it was quite shocking. On to the course, it is over-watered and over lush, every single drive stopped right where it landed. Not sure it's worth it's spot in the rankings or it's $130 green fee. Regarding the rankings, The head pro at one point tried to tell me Bulle Rock competes with Pebble Beach and Kiawah Ocean Course, please, not even close. It is a nice public course that is in pretty good shape, but nothing more than that. I think the course may be struggling financially, the short game practice area does not have real greens anymore and the range was in poor shape. When you read articles about what is wrong with golf in this country often what is discussed is golf taking too long and costing too much, throw in wasting of natural resources (water), Bulle Rock nails all of this. I would not be surprised if Bulle Rock goes the way of Beechtree, the other nice public course in the area which closed a few years ago. If the head pro continues to treat customers as he treated me, it is exactly what the place deserves. read more

This is the first ever Yelp rating I've written. This is a beautiful golf course that was no fun to play and an overall lousy experience. I've played a lot of Pete Dye designs and so many of the elements were familiar. A few of the holes were a little tricked up but, again, that's not uncommon with a Pete Dye course. Greens and fairways were in great shape. What unsuspecting golfers should know is that the fescue rough is kept long enough so that you cannot see your ball unless and until you are right on top of it, which is even more of a problem when you are hitting a blind shot, (and there are quite a few of those). We spent a ton of time looking for golf balls just off the fairway and around the greens and nothing is more disheartening than a lost ball when you know you were just a few feet or so from the fairway. There are no intermediate cuts of rough so if you're not on the fairway or the green, your ball won't be visible. This problem is further aggravated by the cart rules which seem to have been drafted by a team of lawyers. No carts shall be driven in the rough except as required to get to the fairway and short of the black rope line (which in at least one case was 200 yards from the green) and at designated points of ingress etc. On 8 of 18 holes carts were confined to the path. The marshall had the demeanor and visage of a prison warden, neither friendly nor helpful. With the carts kept on the path for so much of the round, distance calculation was a huge challenge. There are no distances marked on the cart paths nor are their any visible stake markings. Very few of the sprinkler heads are marked. Instead, there are 200, 150 and 100 yard markings on the ground in the fairways. While the carts were equipped with navigation/gps screens, only one of ours was working and that's of limited value when you have to keep the cart on the path. So, you have to carry 3 or 4 clubs with you from the cart and hope that one of them will the right one. One or two staff members were friendly but most were utterly indifferent, as though we were a bother. We arrived well in advance of our tee time but I had to track someone down to find out where the driving range was located (it is nowhere near the clubhouse/pro shop). This is not an inexpensive course to play and it was all but empty when we played so you would think staff would make an effort to be welcoming and helpful. Sadly, that was not the case. I wouldn't go back and I can't recommend the place. read more

The golf course is spectacular and so is the restaurant. I have eaten there several times and have never been disappointed. The menu has some staples, but many of the items are rotated in and out regularly. It is also nice and quiet, making it a good place for a relaxing or romantic dinner out. I pulled up to the bag drop and got out to be greeted by a grumpy older gentleman that abruptly asked if I was the 1:15 tee time. This was 1 pm in the afternoon and he didn't as much as say hello. I replied "no I am not" he grabbed my golf bag and walked away and put them on his cart. He than said IS a very loud voice "What is your name ?" I said the tee time is in my friends name in which he replied in a very loud voice "I didn't ask you that i asked you your name"!!!. I was blown away by how rude this guy was and if I was playing on my dime and not a guest of a friend I would have told this idiot where to get off. I checked in at the pro shop and the gentleman told me that everything was taken care of and my friend was at the range. The range is back in the neighborhood and is a pain to find since the "Help " evidently had an attitude and didn't offer a bit of assistance to find the range. After hitting balls we had two carts and we cam back to the club house and I evidently drove my cart in a area that was unacceptable to the same rude attendant and he actually yelled at me to get my cart out of the street. Needless to say I was doing all I could to hold my tongue but I simply said to the attendant that It was the second time he's raised his voice to me and I'm not dealing with his bad attitude. He defiantly responded with "Go in the club house and tell them you don't like my attitude". I was floored but since my friend spent about $ 250 dollars to take me for a round of golf I restrained myself. My friend witnessed this and could not believe the rude behavior of this older attendant. We played our round and I tried to not allow the behavior of this idiot ruin my birthday but I did wait a week and followed up with the golf professional. I called the Golf pro and told him what had happened and he apologized and told me he would call me back. The Pro never even bothered to call me back and that tells me that he could care less. The course is a great track but for the premium price the customer service falls well short of what it should . The behavior of the 'Attendant" who is most likely a retired older man that works there for free golf is unacceptable but the Pro that talked to me and said he's concerned and will call me back and never did is to me the worst offense. This is his occupation and without satisfied customers his job is not needed. Bulle Rock will NEVER get another dime from me. Good Job!! read more
