Heater went out Friday night. Called Bullman who has done all our HVAC work for past 15 years. Guy comes out promptly and says motor is dead, cost to replace $2000. Recommended not doing this since system is 14 years old. Says someone will call me Monday with a quote for a new system( 11am Monday still no call) Charges $135 for all this! Call an independent contractor referred by a friend. He tells me over the phone he can replace motor with service call for $500 and that the motor will definitely outlive the system, yes I get heat that day! Guy explains to me that private equity firms are buying up family owned HVAC companies, keeping employees but raising price points and leveraging situations like mine. Wont be calling Bullman anytime soon for anything.... read more

There needs to be a better system in place to handle emergency HVAC situations. My spouse and I have been clients for 10 years. Every time we have a true emergency, like no heat this week in a system installed by Bullman, the "first available" service appointment is days away. Called at 7:30 In the morning. Told no availability until 4 days later. I even offered to pay the emergency on call fee but was told that emergency on call is only for requests after business hours and this I would have to wait until the evening to have someone call me regarding availability of after hours service. Really?? My recommendation for those individuals who are looking to establish a relationship with an HVAC company is to inquire regarding availability during emergencies. Based upon my experience, Bullman is not available when truly needed. read more

A cavalcade of missteps I have no idea how Bullman obtains good customer reviews, unless perhaps they pay for them. My experience with Bullman Heating and Air was a series of customer services disasters and missteps which cost me money (unrecoverable) and resulted in me going to Haynes instead. BAD DIAGNOSIS: Bullman sent a tech out when my heat pump quit after a power outage. The tech diagnosed the issue as no electricity reaching the unit. He put his volt-ohm-meter (VOM) on both the leads inside the heat/AC unit and on the circuit breaker (I watched him work but did not check his VOM settings). As such, he said I would need to call in an electrician then charged me $150 for the diagnosis. Electrician came out and with his VOM measured clean and full power at the same two contact points. My dad's master's degree was in electrical engineering and I helped him wire our house, built ham radios, etc. So, I immediately got suspicious about the Bullman tech. Chatting with the electrician, we together suspected that the Bullman tech had his meter set for DC volts instead of AC, and thus he saw zero volts. The electrician also charged me $150. So far, Bullman cost me $300 for nothing except aggravation, delay and having to run my house on emergency heat. They never offered to refund me for the electrician who proved the Bullman tech incompetent. FIRST BID: Bullman sent out a second tech who confirmed there was good power. He taped of some wires (bypassed the compressor) so I could get through the coming hard freeze on expensive emergency power. I asked Bullman to give me options for fixing/replacing the system. After a day or two, they suggested replacing the 16-year-old compressor - which uses old and discontinued refrigerants - and no other suggestion. Being a 16-year-old unit whose blowers might die soon as well, you would think Bullman might provide other alternatives AS REQUESTED. Nope. This gets even stranger since the replacement compressor would require the old refrigerant which isn't being made anymore and thus the dwindling supplies are getting progressively more expensive. So, I asked them to suggest replacing the entire unit. Should have needed to, but nudging Bullman evidentially is part of their workflow. SECOND BID: Bullman Heating and Air, after a delay (while the daytime outdoor temps were literally freezing) sent an overpriced bid for a Trane system (the unit that died was Goodman, and this enters into the picture next). Trane was recently acquired by some conglomerate and their customer reviews have been falling. Since replacing a Goodman with a Goodman made sense, I asked the Goodman web site to recommend a local dealer. Bullman was on that list. So why in the name of logic did Bullman not suggest a Goodman to begin with? I suspect margins and dealer incentives. Local dealers buy gear and are offered different levels or profitability. So, I would wager than Bullman didn't even bother to look at using Goodman gear (and this is a hunch on my part) if Trane was offering deeper discounts (to improve sales since Trane has been hammered by increasingly bad customer reviews). THIRD BID: Never came. I asked the same rep at Bullman to bid a Goodman unit. He never replied, despite my emailing and leaving voicemail. So, I gave up, went back to the Goodman web site, found Haynes Heating and Cooling who were professional from start to finish. Bottom line: Take you business to anyone except Bullman ... unless of course you enjoy bad diagnostics, bad service, and eventual abandonment. read more

Called because the evaporating tray was dripping , the drainage opening was occluded by debris. From the beginning the guy tells me that I have to but 2 units costing about 20.000 dollars. The employee was annoyed when I told he I won't buy new units. Then he goes up into the attic and comes back and tells me I need "expansion valves in both units" but my units are cooling fine. The want 4.300 dollars . They just want to rip customers off. You be the judge. Never again I use them. read more

Bullman Heating & Air has been sold to a corporation (who own other such businesses). The Bullman family is no longer any part of the business, although many of their employees remain. The good will and past performance of the company is now history. It's a new day and a new start. The employee I talked to was hopeful that past performance will continue, if not improve. Employee compensation was raised - a good sign. My recent, bad, experience is based on a four year failure (leak) of the "A" coil in the air handler. It's disappointing to have the top-of-the-line Trane model fail so early It's under warranty for parts - that's good - but I will pay $1,200 to have the unit charged with refrigerant, plus labor and taxes, a total of $1,700. Bad luck? As best I can tell, the "new" Bullman company is charging reasonable rates for the labor. But their guarantee is only 30 days. Unlikely, but if it fails again, say in 2 months, I will be out another $1,700. I believe they should have at least a 90 day warranty for their work. read more

We have had Bullman H&A maintain and service our homes and rental properties for 15 years. Kelly manages service appointments, and service contracts. Billy, Steve and Jimmy do what it takes to keep all our systems running optimally, preventing problems by replacing parts early, and being timely when something unforeseen happens. That was the past. There have been slow changes here and not for better. Keeping costs low is important to us too, and lately quotes for system replacements have been thousands higher than competitors. Our contracts are not renewed and I have to remind them and do follow up. Recently a credit never happened on a contract cancellation. Service this winter had us waiting weeks for parts with no heat, in addition to a lengthy wait for an emergency rental furnace replacement. We had to go elsewhere. What good was a service contract? read more

We made an appointment a week ago for A/C service stating that the fan was working but A/C was not. The appointment was for this coming Friday at 8-830am. I called back today to verify and was told by Annette that she could not honor the appointment and that it was incorrectly filed as a tuneup. We were given the runaround and ultimately told that "we weren't a good fit" and that they could recommend some other A/C repair companies in the area. I hope other customers aren't being treated the same way. read more

While I was in Mission Hospital shortly after I suffered a major stroke on Feb 14, 2008 my house "mysteriously" burned to the ground. I replaced it with a used mobile home that had a working HVAC unit. I contracted with Bullman to reset the unit back up shortly after I had the mobile pulled in to place. Because I did not have 240V power, the completion of the set up could not occur at that time. I trusted the company because I had done business and became friends with "Johnny", the nephew of the owner of BULLMAN, I trusted the company to complete the job and went ahead and paid them in full to come back and complete the job as soon as I had power on. Weeks turned in to months and I suffered yet another major stroke along the way. I moved in and did without power by using a generator as needed. My 14 year old daughter moved in with me in October so I had the power turned on and scheduled with Bullman to come out and finish setting up the HVAC unit...they NO call, no showed me stating the guy who was coming out to finish the reinstall was no longer with them...so we reset for December... When they came out, I forgot the electrician had "borrowed" the breaker to set my cook stove. They couldn't remove the two wire nuts and push them into the breaker b/c of liability issues and left...before they were out of the driveway, I had the wires back in the breaker and they promised that they would call to reset the appointment the very next morning...That was a Friday and the call never came. I drove back up there Jan 9th and met with a nice fellow that wrote down a message for the head of the service dept to call me... I thought he had promised to call tomorrow but apparently, they don't run service calls on the weekends...as I found out around 9am Monday morning... I made it back to Weaverville when the Manager??? called and said it would take a few weeks to get out here because they were covered up with service calls. I reminded him that I had been on his service call list for over a month now and when he started yeah,butting me, I lost my cool! As I sit here filling out this paperwork to sue BULLMAN Heating and Cooling, I wanted to WARN anyone considering using this service department to absolutely reconsider your options. read more

This is a great service. Always on time for service. Friendly. Willing to explain things. Been using them for two years since moving to NC. Service pro JD was very helpful making sure things were set right. We have one of those weekly programmable thermostats, and it can be hard to set the thing without a script.
