What a great dining experience! One of the best I have ever had. And I am not talking just the food, which was excellent, but the people as well. By the time I left, I felt like I was part of the family. Shout out to my waiter, Homer, who shook my hand and welcomed me, and to the elderly couple who sat behind me, who told me they "would hear me crying all the way from Texas", the next time the Cowboys play the Saints, and to the super friendly person who cashed me out at the register who asked when I would be coming back (hopefully soon), as well as to the lady (who I think was the owner), who said "well, you're smiling, so that must mean the food is good?". If you are looking for traditional Mississippi homestyle fare served by nice people at reasonable prices, this may be your best choice in Jackson. The restaurant and parking lot are smallish, but arrive early and you'll be fine. All dishes were exceptionally well-prepared with reasonable portion sizes. I never post bad reviews, but in this case, I will make an exception. First off, I started visiting Bully's Restaurant a few years ago, because my mom's doctor recommended them. Let me say this: in past recent times, always decent food and service!! Oh, Oh, Oh but NOT today!!! My mom's birthday, I go in after calling her a to-go plate in, since she had been away from home all day. I called at 3:37 PM and made it there shortly after 4pm to pick up. I had a busy day and alot going on, so NO, I wasn't overly cheesy and happy go lucky when I walked through the door. I approached the counter and a light skinned lady with natural hair was sitting on her cellphone, I don't even think she spoke, but she did ask my name. I told her Michelle. She then said my order wasn't ready and asked me would I like to have a seat, however she never took the cellphone from her ear and should in my opinion NEVER been at the front counter. I told her I was fine and could stand. She proceeded to tell me that she was on a call and needed me to have a seat because I could hear her conversation I politely told her the polite thing to do would be for her to walk away and yes very sarcastically and I continued to stand, because that was RUDE. Also, no one else was even waiting at the time. That was her first mistake. She then got up with an attitude and walked away, by this time my mood was from 0 to 100, but I remained calm as I waited and they kept telling me what they did not have almost an hour later after I called my order in. The cook on the contrary was EXTREMELY nice. They didn't have turkey necks, ok fine. No neckbones, ok fine. No baked chicken, ok fine. I then asked for whatever they had because I had ice cream in the car and after an hour later, I really didn't care ‍ The kitchen lady was so sweet and kept coming out to see what did I want in place of everything they kept offering but was all of a sudden out of. Now, back to the lady with the natural hair who didn't greet me properly from the beginning which was her initial mistake in any place of business. After going to the car, I looked at my phone and saw it was almost 5:00 PM, I went back in to prove to the lady via my phone that I had called an hour ago asking what they had on the menu and was never told they were out of anything, but she wouldn't know because she was on the phone. After going back in she was still rude, extremely rude, and even told me that I needed to shed a few pounds anyway, which I can agree with ‍ but in a place of business it was very unprofessional. All the while I complimented Mr. Bully on how well the service is when he's up front and instead he allowed his relative/employee I am assuming to continue to insult me. I will never ever in my life recommend nor eat at this place again as I have in past times highly recommended them. Bad day or not, IT'S NO EXCUSE FOR IT!! The absolute worst I have ever experienced. Bully's was the winner of the 2016 James Beard Award, and for good reason as their genuine soul food is cooked to perfection down to the perfect crunchy but delicate corn bread coating of the green fried tomatoes. We were visiting from Seattle, WA, and stumbled upon Bully's while driving through Jackson visiting the Medgar Ever's memorial (a must stop at the home of an America hero). Took the wife to the famous Bully's yesterday. We took the scenic route around the medical mall to check out the neighbor so she can appreciate "soul" food from its humble beginnings. Needless to say, there is nothing impressive about the front of the place, but amazing food awaits inside. She got the oxtail and stewed okra / dressing for her two sides. The oxtail is so well cooked and tender that all the meat falls straight off the bone. The meat is flavorful and the consistency is just so rich it is hard to describe it. There is something about that it that just pleases the palate. She ate the oxtail with her hands and enjoyed every last bite. I decided to go with the ham hock, something I haven't tried at the restaurant. Its tasted a lot like the pig feet but with more lean meat. I looked up hock and it is fibula/tibia joint, the portion of the leg that is between the butt and the feet. It was a little salty, but it went well with my blacked eye peas. The meaty portion like the oxtail just falls off the bone. I can't imagine how long they have to cook the meat to have it so tender and soft. We were debating whether to get the chitterlings or not, and ultimately ended up not getting it because we are both so full after our plates. Next time I'm gonna venture out and try the chitterlings. We came back home and shortly afterwards she passed out. Highly recommend the oxtail. It was a good day! read more

SOUTHERN HOSPITATLITY AT ITS BEST!!! I called Bully's first to see what their business hours were. Bully himself answered the phone and informed me that they would be closing in about 30 minutes. I am visiting the area so I wasn't sure if I would make it to the restaurant from my hotel in time so I told Bully that I would come by tomorrow for lunch. Bully insisted that I come now and assured me that he would stay open until I arrived so that I could experience their food! I had the meatloaf, macaroni & cheese, turnip greens (the best I've ever tasted), black eyed peas, cornbread and caramel cake. Everything was AMAZING!!!! And reasonably priced! I decided to give this place a try after reading all the good reviews, what a delicious decision! The fried chicken was perfectly crisp even 15 minutes later after I ate it in my hotel room. The greens...oh the greens...the most flavorful greens I've ever had. They tasted spicy, sweet, and tangy. I definitely wished for seconds. This is the perfect spot to satisfy your craving for indulgent, comfort food. I tried their fried chicken with mac and cheese and candied yams--I left the restaurant 5 lb heavier but also 5x happier. The food is superb and the staff is SUPER friendly. They definitely make sure that you feel welcomed. However, due to the location and parking, I will probably only eat here when my craving for amazing soul food becomes too overwhelming to handle. There's only one little lot in front of the restaurant where during busy lunch hours (12-1), cars park right behind other cars, making it extremely difficult to back out of the parking lot.
