She took her time with me as opposed to other dentists who just pop in for five minutes at the end of your appointment. Her assistant Gabby, was also really friendly and polite and tried to make the x-rays as easy as possible. Lynn at the front desk went out of her way to get me on the schedule and call my insurance to see what would be covered and when since I am on a recently purchased insurance plan. I had a really questionable dentist back in CA and avoided going to the dentist for a while when I moved out here. I guess you can say Dr. Schtakleff has restored my faith in dentistry :P. She didn't pressure me into fancy dental gadgets/procedures but told me affordable ways to manage my teeth and stop any issues before they get worse. She even did my cleaning herself! Another major plus is that the entire practice was crystal clean! Everything from the bathrooms to the sanitized tools, to the fact that both Gabby and Dr. Schtakleff are decked out in surgical scrubs! You had me at "hygiene."

They had not seen the dentist for any work. I went in because my tooth was killing me. I could not tell which tooth was hurting me because I was in so much pain. They did $345 of X-rays and the dentist looked in my mouth, NEVER TOUCHED ANY OF MY TEETH TO FIGURE OUT WHICH TOOTH IT WAS, she looked only at the X-ray and said it's two of my teeth. Sent me to an oral surgeon to have them removed. Well, they were not the teeth hurting me but now I don't have two teeth. She then would not send a referral over for the actual tooth that was killing me. I went to a new dentist and they said yeah that tooth has to be removed that it can't be saved. So now three teeth gone instead of one. I should have had the choice to remove the two teeth that were not hurting me. The oral surgeon is a whole other story. I told him no one had touched my tooth and before I spent $1000 to have them remove is he sure those are the ones hurting me. Well, as we know he made a mistake too. Total failure on them. A dentist and an oral surgeon should actually touch your teeth before removing them and do a cold test or tap test or something. I don't understand how none of this was done. I was in so much pain I was relying on a dentist knowing what they were doing.

I chose Wake Orthodontics and could not be happier. As a geriatric patient with a mouth full of problems, I was not expecting much. I told Dr. Collie I just wanted a pretty smile. Wake Orthodontics with Dr. Collie have far exceeded all expectations. I arrive about five minutes before my appointment and am seen almost immediately. There is an office in Smithfield which is extremely convenient. HIs staff are knowledgeable, friendly, encourage questions and get answers. The time, effort and work done on my teeth are amazing. As I have watched my mouth turn from a mess into one that creates a pretty smile, I feel so very grateful to Dr. Collie and his staff. For youths, I have talked with dozens of his youth patients and their parents. I have not heard a single complaint or concern. In terms of braces themselves, it's too early to share my thoughts on them. However, I've been a little bit frustrated with their financial/administrative side so far. Carolina Braces was one of the orthodontists my dentists referred me to, and I scheduled a consultation since they're a short drive away from me. The phone call was productive and efficient and I got a consultation appointment in for a few weeks later. During my consultation, I got a quote for metal braces. I was not interested in Invisalign and did not realize clear braces were an option since that was not explained to me during the consultation. Following the consultation and prior to my first actual appointment, I learned that clear braces were an option so I emailed to request a quote. Since my first appointment was coming up in a few days, I ended up calling to get the information. Because they already had my insurance information, the treatment specialist (I forget the official title) was able to look up the specific figures and explained that because my insurance coverage was higher for clear braces, my out of pocket price would be the same for both clear and metal braces. I had her confirm this information and the exact figures (how much it would be total, how much my insurance coverage was for each, and what would be the total out of pocket expense would be for me( several times because I was happily surprised that they would cost me the same. With this information, I decided to go with clear braces. Only to show up to my first appointment to find out that it was going to cost me $500 more. I explained to the payment specialist the information I received from the treatment specialist and asked her to confirm since it was wildly different from what I was told. The payment specialist went to ask treatment specialist, and I could literally hear the latter tell the former that she never told me that information (I swear I did not dream the phone call). The payment specialist came back to the office and said there must have even an understanding. I decided to just go with the clear braces since I was already set on it but I was quite frustrated with the inconsistent information provided by Carolina Braces and the fact that there was no apology or accountability. A part of me now wonders if this will be a trend (unpleasant surprises) and if I should have gone to a different orthodontist.

During that process, I was also working on sleep apnea and failing CPAP. Apparently double-jaw surgery is a highly regarded although intense surgical option for sleep apnea if you're a candidate. Ended up pivoting that way and changed Invisalign to braces and Dr. Walton helped me find some great surgeons. It was a long process but I'm so grateful!! I'm 10+ weeks post-op and it's been incredible. Still have several months of braces but hopefully will be down with them this year!

They also send text and email reminders of appointments. I'd like to see a more personal touch from the rest of the staff. Sometimes they don't even explain what they are doing as if I can read their minds or I don't need to know. I am not finished but am thrilled with the results so far and the payment plan is greatly appreciated.

I still felt pressured into agreeing because I was told they needed to check for possible problems, which caused me unnecessary anxiety as a parent. At the end of the visit, I was told my child didn't need any fillings or extractions. I was still charged $539 for a first visit that included multiple X-rays, an exam, a cleaning, and fluoride. I was shocked by the cost and did not feel that the necessity of all these services or the total price was explained clearly beforehand. If you are paying out of pocket, ask for a written estimate before any treatment and ask exactly which procedures are truly necessary. I will not be returning.
