Bunker Hill Vineyard in Parrish is such a quaint little gem! We discovered it on our way to the Strawberry Festival and are so glad we stopped. It's a small, family-owned spot with such a warm, welcoming feel. The owners were incredibly friendly and made the whole experience even better. We even donated about six of our used wine bottles to them, which made it feel fun and personal in a unique way. They offer wine tastings, and the wines themselves feel clean, light, and thoughtfully made. Definitely a hidden local find worth visiting! read more

TL;DR - I was totally blown away by this hidden gem. There's no other way to describe this experience. Let's just say I learned a lot about Bunker Hill Vineyard & Winery. I also had the pleasure of meeting the husband and wife duo that makes all of these Florida grown products. They made this experience so much fun. All you need to know is that their natural wines, jellies, and jams were all amazing. There's something for everyone here. So, I decided to take a different route back to Brandon from Ellenton just so that I could try these wines. It was an easy drive on US-301 as I made my way to Wauchula Rd. This is where the adventure started for me. It's a 2 lane road with a speed limit of 60 MPH that takes you past farm lands and phosphate mines. I honestly felt like I was lost in the middle of nowhere. Thank goodness for GPS. I pretty much knew that Bunker Hill Road would be coming up soon after passing Lake Parrish, and there it was. The winery is across the street and to the left of the fork in the road. There's plenty of parking in front of it along rows of grape vines. At that point, I was just happy that I found it. I didn't really get a chance to explore around the vineyard. Lenora found me in front of the farm winery accessory building where the wine tasting would begin. That's when I also met Larry as they invited me inside the tasting room. What a cool set up they have! It's inside of what looks like a heavily insulated Quonset hut. Larry explained the differences between unfiltered and filtered wine. Honestly, I didn't know there was a difference. It raised so many questions, and actually made me aware of all the additives that are placed into manufactured wines during the filtering process. Some that I have actually been sensitive to in the past. It was interesting to hear about their process, and even the way they recycle their bottles and jelly jars. They are truly sustainable. What I also noticed is that most (if not all) of their wines are vegan. I'm not vegan, so it's not something that I usually look for. I just didn't know that animal proteins are commonly used in the process of making wine. It's all very interesting. Let's talk about the wine tasting. There's a list of medium dry, dry, and sparkling wines. I made my selections from the list of medium dry wines. I did take some suggestions from them, and I'm so glad that I did. Otherwise, I would have never tried the Bamboo Herbal Tea or Dandelion Flower Petal. Just open your mind to all the possibilities. Your palate will thank you later. There are fruit, vegetable, flower, coffee, tea, and even bamboo wines. I think I saw rice wine as well. If it has grape, then it's the muscadine variety. If you want a mixture, then I totally suggest the Strawberry/Grape wine. This one was one of my favorites. I was also in love with the Guava wine. The same goes for the jam. It's insanely wonderful. You can get it with or without the seeds. I wanted to buy all of the ones on my list. I ended up getting six 12 oz. bottles so that I could share them with my husband. He was just as amazed as I was with his samples of wine. The flavors are so clear and with such a great color and aroma. There was no unpleasant after taste, and it wasn't overly sweet like other Florida fruit wines that I've tasted. I didn't get that wine headache which usually happens with red wines. I guess I'm just sensitive to something in it. I also sampled Lenora's Bamboo Leaf Herbal Tea. It was so refreshing! What a great way to end the tasting. Anyway, I tried 6 different samples for $6. They are truly just a sample. Don't expect to get full size glasses. It's not a wine bar. However, you can purchase a charcuterie platter if you call 24 hours in advance of your tasting. They'll have it ready for you. Once you do the first wine tasting, the other tastings will be complimentary when you return. That's when I plan on trying the vegetable wines. There is one that actually tastes like a salad. I didn't get to try the coffee wine, but I did sample the coffee wine jelly. It was actually very good. The starfruit wine jelly is even better. I can't wait to go back. Hopefully my husband will come along with me next time. I think he would love sampling the wines and jellies. I had the baby with me and as soon as we opened the door, we were immediately greeted and told the baby was more than welcome! It was refreshing to see how welcoming they were with the baby since some wineries can be a little different. The owners are absolutely fabulous. So fabulous that I wish I could work for them! When you sit down, they bring you two laminated wine menus and explain the process. There are only a handful of grape wines. They make wines out various things, including green tea, coffee, sugar cane and even rice. I never even knew that was a thing!! I loved everything too. There were three of us, and we had six pours each and tasted each other's pours, so we got to try 18 different wines. We were told that you can add a teaspoon of jam to a glass of sparkling wine to make a sangria too! There are a few different discounts here as well. The other thing I love about this winery is that it is a green winery! They have never used a brand new wine bottle. They do incredible things here. Their wines are also unfiltered, which means all wines are at least a year old before being bottled. Their wines retain all of the health benefits because they are unfiltered. How awesome is that?! I can't wait to return, I loved everything about this place, and the owners have such a warm energy that I just wanted to hug them. read more

I was looking for a day date idea when I came across this winery in Bunker Hill, Florida appropriately named Bunker Hill Vineyard. I hadn't heard of it prior to but as I started reading reviews, I knew we had to check it out. Although not required, we did make a reservation online for a taste testing. Upon arrival a woman (Lenora) greeted us and told us to come on in! It was an instant welcoming vibe. Lenora and Larry are owners of the Bunker Hill Winery. They introduced themselves and got started on friendly conversation, Q&A, and information about the winery and what the tasting included. Larry gave us a little history lesson on what it is their winery does and how they stand out from the rest. FUN FACT: They are 1 of a small 20 percent of wineries that create all natural, UNFILTERED wines! We then got to choose our 5 desired wines to try, and the owners provide you with a wild card option, 6 samples per person. We chose the medium dry side as we are new to the world of wine, but we do know DRY wine is not for us. At the end of our session, we decided to leave with a bottle of their new Starfruit wine. YUM! Most wines are for sale for $15.99 plus tax. They are also selling smaller bottles for $7.99.  As my husband and I tried our wines, we socialized with Lenora and learned her and Larry's story, both love and professional. Lenora is an absolute gem of a human being. She was so personable, accepting, welcoming, and honestly made me (us) feel so loved as if I was her own family. The passion for living and their winery is immediate upon conversation. They are a down to earth, laid back, and made a life for themselves that brings them joy.  Not a wine person? That is okay, GO ANYWAY! Lenora makes her own jams, jellies, and syrups and my goodness they are a treat! I am honestly surprised they are not talked up more on their website. We walked out of there with a Blackberry Jam and a Jalapeño jam...yes Jalapeño and it is heaven on the taste buds. Perfect mix of sweet and spicy. All natural jams are $5.99. Some say a steal, I say a gift! We will be back for the seasonal flavors as fall approaches.  THAT'S NOT ALL FOLKS! Not only do Larry and Lenora create various wines, jams, jellies, and syrups; they also host weddings and recently started a tree farm to cut your own tree down for Christmas. Florida Red Cedars. Google them. Gorgeous trees. Last year was their first year doing it and they sold 50 trees and in turn planted 50 more. If the ingredients are not on their own farm, they outsource from as many LOCAL farms as they can within the area and then of course other farmers throughout the world. On top of that, Bunker Hill vineyard uses recycled wine, beer, and soda bottles for every bottle. Any glass bottle is accepted as long as washed out (for obvious reasons). So, if you are a wine drinker, send them your bottles instead of throwing them away! BHV also has a rewards program, are kid friendly and they support military personnel.  This winery is amazing, and it is no wonder due to the owners. Their love for life, their vineyard, people, and the planet is a rare find. They are a rare find in this world! My husband and I will be back, not only for all they offer but for Lenora and Larry! Do yourself a favor and go to Bunker Hill Vineyard! *PSA my husband and I are an interracial couple. We did not get any negative vibes or have political conversations. This was an accidental discovery but what a discovery! Unfortunately we didn't order a board since we didn't have 24 hours lead time on our visit but we'll definitely go back. Wonderful hosts and a great place to hang out for a couple of hours tasting different kinds of wine and jams and learning about different ways to actually combine the wine and the jam. Lots of fun, interesting flavors and all around great experience. Highly recommend for a short road trip - very close for us but worth the drive even if it's a bit further. By all means call the day before and order your "board" and as Larry told us - come hungry it's a lot of food. read more

FL wines made by 100% reusing/recycle winery. Owners are passionate and informative. The haven't of the previous year(s) determines what's selling. My favorite was the peach and black tea wines! Can't wait to go back to try the guava wine when it's ready! $5 tasting (5wines) but you can use that $ to go towards a bottle. I ended up paying $9 for a bottle! My friend and I were trying to find something fun while our husbands were out of town. This winery was the perfect choice! The wines range from familiar flavors to very out of the box flavors. I ended up buying onion wine which will be great for cooking and marinating. The jams are amazing and Larry showed us how to take a sparkling dry wine and add a dab of the fresh jam to add sweetness and fresh fruit. I highly recommend the strawberry sparkling and strawberry jam...so good! Bell pepper jam will be great to add to a homemade vinaigrette and the ideas keep growing! Such a great little find!! A true gem!! Ok to bring the kids too! Lenora is the sweetest! Wine tasting was great also, $5 to taste 5 wines (a few more but who's counting) and that $5 goes towards money off any bottle of wine!! Could not believe all the different flavors- blackberry, watermelon, muskmelon, sweet onion and the list goes on and on (20+ i would say). A true hidden gem!!!! This is a must visit if you are in the area. Lenora is a doll. They repurpose everything and the wines are great. She makes her own jams which are delicious. When you go back take them your empty wine bottles, wax, boxes and corks and they will give you credit towards your purchase. Such a great concept. You are not in wine country, so don't expect that. I was taking my husband on a mini vacation for Valentine's Day of wineries in Florida because he loves tasting different wines. We visited Bunker Hill and had a terrific time. The owners Lenora and Larry were very welcoming. We also met a young lady named Brandy who was also very knowledgeable about the process and the wines.They were all so passionate about their wines. You could tell they really loved what they do. There is a concrete wall with different color bottles in it that was really cool. My husband told them if we lived closer he would like to volunteer to help because he had such a great time. They told us how they make all their wines. Very interesting process. They are also in to recycling and they are a "Green" winery which we really liked. It's a must visit. You will be so glad you did. read more

Our community Out and About Club visited Bunker Hill Vineyards and had a terrific time. The owners Lenora and Larry were very welcoming to make a special time for learning, lunch, and tasting. It started with a lunch with rolls and meats and Lenora made all types of salads and sides just like you were at home with family. The carrot salad is the best - she did not disclose her recipe so if you ever get it let me know! We saw a short video and they told us how they make all their wines using muscadine grapes that they grow on their property and they source fruits/vegetables from local small farms in Florida. After they taught us about their vineyard and wines, we got to try a variety of their wines. Hint - go beyond grapes to the other and unusual varieties of their wine. They are also environmentally responsible "stewards of the earth" concerned about reducing their carbon footprint and impact on the environment. EVERY wine bottle that they use is sanitized and recycled to bottle future wines. This inspired me to begin to collect wine bottles that I have and from friends - and I do have a lot of wine drinking friends - to begin to take to Bunker Hill. Larry helped us realize we can enjoy our wine and do a small part to "be green" by recycling bottles with them. Do take the time and make the drive to the pleasant countryside with friends or call Larry and Lenora to schedule a time for your club or group. read more

So we wanted to be adventurous and decided while driving out of town we would do something we don't typically do. We stopped at a few wineries. This winery in particular was our favorite. You drive up and it is so inviting. While walking into the winery you walk through a walkway that is made out of all recycled wine bottles. Outside the door was a bunch of bottles some brought them to recycle. Every bottle they use to bottle their wine is from another recycled bottle of wine. You go in and meet the husband and wife owner and they tell you about their place. You then get a tour of where they recycle the bottles and how they get the other labels and markings off the bottles all by hand. Also how they sanitize the bottles. You then go to where they make the grape wines and all natural fruit wines. From there they take you to the wine cave where the wines sit for no less then a year. It is an amazing process and very educational about the laws of what wine companies can write on the wine bottles about their wines. From their you go and do a tasting of grape wines and their all natural fruit wines. You learn a lot. Also they keep you coming back because depending on the time if year will depend on which wines are available. We are looking forward to July for the strawberry sparking wine and October/November for the spiced apple and pumpkin spiced wine. A great place to go and a wonderful experience all for free. We are from Ohio, we were vacationing on Anna Maria island in October and made a stop at Bunker Hill. The owners are so nice and friendly. I'm not a wine drinker but a few in our group are. They got to try every wine they wanted as well as every flavor of jam. I'm sure we'll be back on next years vacation. Highly recommend this winery. It was a nice day to journey out to the country on the motorcycle. We stopped at the winery to check it out. We use to live in the middle of wine country in Virginia and belonged to many wineries. So we were looking forward to stopping at one in Florida. This winery was definitely a different one than what we are use to. We are use to a more inviting atmosphere w seating (cozy), order by the glass or bottle, maybe cheeses, tour the facility, etc..and a place to come w friends, spouse to unwind and enjoy wine gathering. Some wineries would even bring in a guitar player and have fire pits in the cooler months. This place is more a walk in and get educated on how they do things at some aluminum chairs lined up while the host stands over you, pick a few to taste (he actually persuaded a lot on what you should try) buy, and leave. We did buy 3 bottles, but after getting home - the wax cork thing they put on the bottle was really hard to get off w my Houdini and broke off some wax into the wine :/ oh well lesson learned - salute! read more
