I absolutely loved the Florida Orange Groves Winery. The customer service was top-tier. We stopped in after the beach and decided to stick around for the wine tasting that was starting shortly. We got to try several different Florida wines that are made in house at the winery. Some of my faves were the hurricane and I enjoyed each one of the wine slushy's including the strawberry banana, the hurricane, and the best of all was the orange Creamsicle slushy. I decided to purchase some of the orange Creamsicle wine slushy mix to take home and make orange Creamsicle mocktails and received some of the cute little wine bottle greeting cards. This place was pretty cool! I was raised in St. Petersburg and never heard of this. Maybe because I left the city before I became of age to drink. Nevertheless, a group of about 12 visited the spot for my girlfriend's birthday and we had a blast. We sat down and watched a brief video about the history of the winery. Then we got to go on an actual tour was quite informative. Finally we were able to try a number of the wines and even a couple of the wine slushy's which was a favorite of mine. If you come here do the free wine tasting. You get to try 4 wines, 4 slushies and it's nice to get to taste some things before purchasing. Some wineries do a deal if you get more than 1 bottle but this one doesn't and they're about $22 a bottle. They also have an area in the back to have drinks and I think there may have been some food. I came on a Thursday morning and there was hardly anyone there so that was nice and the woman doing the tasting was super sweet and helpful, she hadn't been with the winery long but was really sweet. I remember coming a few years ago and it was busy and whoever I dealt with was kind of rude when I asked questions about the wine and it was too busy to sample then. I drove by the unassuming building with the beautiful mural on the side, not really paying attention to the actual name. We walked in and it was quiet, only two employees busily stocking wines. The thing I love about Florida wines is they are mostly made from fruits other than grapes; so I'm not limited to whites only. The young lady who lead our tasting was very personable, giving us back stories to each wine and letting us know her personal favorites. When it came to the time for us to taste the slushies, I was thinking they would taste like any other wine slushy I've had in the past. The flavor combinations were so tasty I couldn't wait to go to the beach and sip on it during the hottest part of the day. There were other wines we didn't get a chance to try during the tasting and that's when the flight came in handy. We were able to try wines that we peeked our interest that we didn't choose during our tasting, including some sparkling wines (for a small upcharge). The staff brought our flight to us in the lounge area, where they have plush leather chairs and a variety of jams, jellies and other condiments for sale. Purchased a Groupon for two. No reservation is needed, so you can just walk right in and wait for the next available tasting (luckily, there was one just starting when we walked in). The tasting went by too quickly. All of the wines available are fruit/tropical wines, but some are available dry (blueberry was my fave). We also ordered a charcuterie board (which was recommended). Sat in the lounge after and ordered a couple glasses of wine, and it was very relaxing. The groupon is an excellent deal as you also get two wine glasses, a bottle of wine of your choice (up to 26.00), and 2 cans of wine of your choice. They start you off with a video to watch explaining the history of the winery and then they give you a complimentary tasting of their popular wines and wine slushees. I found out about the winery from my friend. We visited on a weekend and got to do the tour and a tasting. Our tour was done by Demi, who was very informative and passionate. She also did our tasting and made sure we knew what we were trying out and answered any questions we had. My favorites were the Cat 5 and orange slushee. The winery also has snacks, jams, souvenirs, games, and other merchandise. One of the staff members got us to try these champagne flavored chips, they were interesting. I also got to try deep fried shell n' all peanuts. Other than that, the bathrooms were clean. The staff members were nice. Parking was ample. The tour and tasting were free. You can get additional 4 tastings for $5. The cheese/crackers/olives plate was $10 for 2 people. If you buy more than 12 or 13 bottles (I forgot which), you can choose either to get 7% discount or the last bottle free. I wished I could buy many bottles but I don't drink that much. For the sampler we picked up Hurricane Class 5, Coco Polada, Barrel Selection (Blueberry) and Sparkling Mango. We soon got our sampler. The wines were amazing with Hurricane Class 5 being the best wine. Along with Hurricane Class 5 Coco Polada was also our favorite wine. We wanted to try more sampler so we decided to order another sampler for $10 which included Key Limen, Florida Grapefruit, Orange Sunshine Sweet and Barrel Selection ( Peach). From this sampler we loved Orange Sunshine Sweet and the Peach Barrel Selection. We enjoyed their selection and it was an amazing experience with delicious wine. I have had Florida Orange Groves Winery bookmarked for the longest time. I was saving it for a fabulous girls' weekend...and then all weekends got canceled... Instead of waiting around to do a tour of the winery I decided, to heck with it! I might as well try their wines! So that is what I did. This week I picked up a bottle of Hurricane Class 5. Which is a bottled sangria. The packaging is totally what drew me in initially-I mean come on this is so on brand for Florida! LOL. The sangria is a blend of 5 of their signature fruit wines: key lime, pineapple, passionfruit, mango, kiwi and watermelon. The most forward tasting in my personal opinion is definitely the watermelon and lime. It's super light and sweet. Someday soon I will experience the full essence of Florida Orange Groves Winery. Had a great time touring this local staple winery. They specialize in sweeter, fruiter wines, many with a bit of tartness. I popped my head in to pick up a bottle and was lucky enough to show up just before a tour started. I got some great insight into how each type of wine is made and got to taste several (all free of charge). Most of their bottles average at about $20 - $25. My favorite of the products they offer are the wine slushes they put together using one of their wines and one of their mixers. The blueberry pina colada was fantastic as was the orange dream. Both are very drinkable and make for fantastic beach beverages. Their "adult Capri Suns" or wines offered in cute pouches are also a great idea and are affordable. I just personally found all of the wines offered in the pouch to be too sweet or too bitter. Their store offers far more than just a large variety of wines (including ports, sherries, sparklings and more) but also has local honey, hot sauces, juices and more! If you're around in the summer, check to see if they have fresh orange juice available. They make some of the most delicious fresh juice I've ever had! They also offer a military discount. I've been driving past this place for years... Back in the day you could even buy fruit here. Now fruit wine is being touted. I've really never had a desire to indulge in fruit wine, but at Thuy's request I acquiesced. Bare in mind I have always thought of "fruit wine" as "fruit flavored wine" or "fruit infused wine", but boy was I mistaken when it came to the Florida Orange Groves & Winery products. The very first thing we learned is that every wine is from fermented fruit. It's not flavored wine, it's fruit wine. Something like 30 different fruits are fermented (some, but not all, at this location). There are also blends, resulting in some 40 flavors or so. There are also ports and champagnes (yes, they use that word). There are four basic parts to a visit here: 1) Watch a DVD about the history and the wine making process, 2) Take a tour of the factory area (no picture taking during the tour), 3) Hit the tasting bar, 4) Browse the shop (and probably buy a bottle or two). The DVD, about 15 minutes long, is interesting. It claims that this is the only citrus winery in the world. Sounds hard to believe, but a cursory google search did not contradict this. The winery tour is also about 15 minutes long and takes you through the various rooms used for fermenting, bottling and storing. The tour also introduces a new packaging, and that's the "wine pouch." Wine packaged in a single-serving, easily transportable, pouches. Think Capri Sun for adults. Now comes the tasting bar. You are obliged to try "the most popular wine", which is the Hurricane Class 5 White Sangria. After that you are free to choose four more wines to try. If you are there with a friend, you don't both have to try the same flavors, so you can increase your sampling. You can also, for $5, purchase 5 more samples. We actually did this, as there were just a few more flavors we had to try. After you are done with the wine, you are then given samples of the wine smoothies, which are a 50/50 mix of wine and smoothie mix (non-alcoholic sweetened fruit syrup). Lastly, it was time to browse the shop. In addition to the wines and smoothies mixes, there are also jams, jellies and other quintessential Florida confections. There is also a large selection of gift items, most, if not all, wine themed (glasses, bottle holders, stoppers, aprons, etc.). In regards to the tasting, some of the wines we really liked, and some were just m'eh. Nothing was horrible, though most are heavy on the sweet side (there are a few semi-sweeet and dry options). The wines that stood out on our list were the Coco Polada (orange, pineapple and coconut wine), Florida Banana (think boozy banana flavored Runt candy), and the Orange Blossom Honey (very similar to a mead). Worth an honorable mention for their uniqueness, were the sparkling wines, the ports and the "Hot Sun" wine, made from tomatoes and a hint of peppers. I could see this as a less boozy Bloody Mary substitute. The ports, though very young (they are fermented with oak chips to give them that woodiness), were interesting. FOGW has won over 244 medals for their wine. While some may cringe at calling this wine, some of the flavors are quite tasty and I'm sure most people are tempted to bring at least one bottle home. Which brings me to my last point. The only reason I'm not going with a 5 star rating is the prices. The typical bottle of wine is about $20. Smoothie mix is $10. When I think of what that same $20 will get you in a legitimate red wine, well that's when I just don't get the price point. A bottle of their very young port will set you back as as much as a 15 year old Tawney (and it's not nearly as good). This aspect aside, we still bought two bottles of wine (banana and the orange blossom honey) and a smoothie mix (also banana). It was novel enough to make it fun. We're saving them for the hot Texas summer. Lastly, our host Celeste did a great job with the tour and our tastings. She was a very fun person to work with. read more

My boyfriend loves sweet wines. To be more exact, my boyfriend loves Welch's grape juice. When I came across a New York Times travel article highlighting the tropical fruit based wines at Florida Orange Groves Winery I knew we had to add it to the itinerary for our mini St. Pete visit. You have to give this business credit for mixing it up - they carry over 45 wines! Yes, 45. Ranging in ingredients from tomato and carrot wines to wines that taste more like a pina colada than a glass of vino (which I'm not totally opposed to). I would have to say my favorite was the key lime pie wine. Bottles run around $20 up to $45 for the port varieties (raspberry chocolate and another that is escaping me at moment) During our free tasting, we tried 11 types of wines including 4 of the wine slushies.
