I went through the drive-through one day for a barbecue sandwich, and the young kid that was working in the window was soaking wet with sweat had his hair pulled back for earrings look like yeah they did a while and then when I handed him my money, his fingernails were dark and dirty. Just had lunch at Bunkhouse BBQ and we've never been happier! They know what they are doing here. We both got the regular sliced brisket sandwich, chips and potato salad. The brisket was smoked to perfection and so flavorful. The potato salad was very good. Portions were generous. The bag of chips was a regular sized bag, not the tiny kindergarten size. The sweet tea was on point. It wasn't overly sweet. The very talented Owner/Pitmaster is super friendly as was other staff. What a gem!! We will definitely be back!! read more

Stopped in based on the many good reviews, and they were spot-on. The price for a brisket plate was cheap by 2024 standards. The brisket was perfectly cooked and quite delicious. We mixed two BBQ sauce flavors together and liked it better than any of the three sauces by themselves. I love fried okra and was pleasantly surprised at how much I got. The pinto beans were very good and tasted like pinto beans; they weren't over-seasoned as many places do. Friendly employees completed the home run. We'll be back! read more

This place was incredible! The food was so yummy! The BBQ was great - brisket lean and tender, falling off the bone ribs, and the jalapeño sausage was spicy and tasty. The real surprise was the sides. The fries were just right, the potato salad was good and the fried okra was the best I've ever had. And the amazing part is that the people were nicer than the food was good. They checked on us several times and were as sweet as can be. I'll be honest - the place is like a hole in the wall (and I mean that in the best possible way). OK, first of all, I will admit that we're BBQ snobs. We have eaten at some of the very best BBQ places in Texas. So keep that in mind. The BBQ was ok. Not real Smoky. It was lean (as requested), but a bit on the dry side. Ribs were good. Sauce was a little sweet. The workers never washed their hands. I'm kind of a germ freak, especially after Covid. The women's restrroom was clean. One of the workers looked like she had been hit in the face with a tackle box (lip piercings). She also had pink and green hair. Not sure what that was all about. The credit card machine automatically asks for a tip, even though you have to wait in a line to get your food and they request that you clean your table. The Flat screen TV had featured male and female wrestling. Ugh. And it was LOUD. Ugh. The big winner of the day was Rick's homemade cheesecake. Ordered their bunkhouse platter with 3 meat. Ordered sliced brisket, ribs and barbecued chicken . Cashier said their bbq chicken would just be wings for the plate. With potatoes salad and okra with a coke to drink. Err ok. Well! The wings were fried, no okra, rib wasn't good tasting, brisket was inedible. On the first bite of it this meat I could just chew a couple times and had to spit it out and wipe my tongue off it was that bad. From that point we just trashed the $22 and change food and left. Saw the ratings as a good place. Stopped in around 5:30pm to try. I ordered 3-plate meat...ribs, brisket, and sausage. The okra and potato salad were great. Meats were not. Sausage and brisket were dry. Meat on the ribs were very chewy and tough....hard to get the meat off the bone. My friend had ribs and turkey and his turkey was dry. Despite this, the flavor of the meat was fine. The staff was rather standoffish and they seemed to goof around with horseplay. Stopped here on our way from Lubbock to Houston. Family had brisket, sausage, and turkey sabdwiches along with corn nuggets (think fried cream corn) and fried okra. Loved it all, except the brisket (it was just ok - would have preferred more flavor - seemed saltless). The regular BBQ sauce made the brisket sandich way better - nice balance of vinegar and sweet. The service was really great and the place is nice and COVID clean and spaced out nicely. I would definitely try it again and give the brisket another shot - plus I want to try the ribs. read more

We have visited a few times in the past and we're pretty much pleased with the food. This time however it was absolutely horrible. We ordered the family pack with an extra half pound of sausage. We ordered Cole slaw and beans as the sides but received potato salad instead of beans. The brisket must have been what was left in that pan because of the amount of fat grease that saturated the meat as well as several chunks of the burnt outer skin that would chip a tooth if the attempt would have been made to eat it. We ask the question if onions and pickles still came with the order and the reply was yes but we did not receive these items. This visit has discouraged a return trip because it appears that it's hit and miss and when the price has gone up and the lack of concern for quantity has gone down I dont believe it's worth the chance. read more

Finished working in the area and was starving. Previous day I had just "ok" bbq, so I was ready for something better. Stopped by to an almost empty restaurant about 11:30, it did quickly fill up though. As we pulled up and opened the car door, you could taste the brisket just by the amazing smell. I imagine heaven will smell the same. Had the brisket/turkey with sides of fried okra and corn nuggets. Tender doesn't begin to describe the meats. The turkey was so juicy and tender, melted in your mouth. Even a newborn baby could have eaten it. Not just tender, but savory as well. Then tackled the brisket. Literally cut it using the back of the plastic knife. It fell apart. Almost needed a spoon to scoop it up. Good Smokey flavor as well. Just needs a bit more spice, salt n pepper, maybe some cayenne too. I did grab the spicy bbq sauce as well. It is ok. It does have a hint of sweet and too much Tabasco flavor. Next was the fried okra. Not too much batter , good overall. Last was the corn nuggets. Little balls of corn battered and fried. They were very tasty as well, with a nice hint of sweet corn. Even though I was full, i still had the peach cobbler for dessert. I should have added the scoop of ice cream as well to make it perfect. The crust was great, buttery and thick. I eat great food... and this place has some of the most succulent, well smoked barbecue I have ever tasted. And, my friend, that is saying a lot. The ribs are perfection with a nice darkened shell, yet tender and juicy to the bone. The brisket has a perfect smoke ring and is also very tender and juicy. I consider this to be a very fine barbeque choice that is a bit off the beaten path. You will have to drive 35 miles west of Waco on Highway 6 to Clifton, Texas to sample the tasty ribs. The dark finish and texture on these beauties make these some of the best in this region. The Bunkhouse (254.675.8409) sits on the south side of the 6 just before you get into Clifton. There is a sign about a mile before get to the dirt driveway. The restaurant is furnished with many country paintings, curious old farming tools, saws, a guitar, horseshoes, and much more hanging from the walls. To enhance the central Texas atmosphere, country music is played in the background and the owner wears a cowboy hat, wranglers, and boots while he cuts the meat in front of you. His line of patter and country customer service is among the best in the west. Also interesting were the TV sets that seem to be a part of some strange performance art or broadcast from space. If you figure out what they are doing, let me know. The ribs are the real star here. They come with a sweet glaze applied but I usually ask that they delete it. The portions of sliced brisket, ribs, ham, and sausage are very large. Sandwiches are packed with meat. The sides are all OK but nothing exceptional. Onion rings are frozen but OK and the fries also but OK . The sauce is good - maybe not the best ever but tasty. The prices here are very reasonable and the serving size make this place an exceptional value. Tuesday thru Friday there is an all you can eat lunch buffet from 11am - 2pm that includes salad bar and dessert. Each day sliced brisket, chopped brisket (in sauce), and sausage are served along with alternating fourth meat. Seriously great Barbeque. The ribs were good, not amazing -- except for the rib sauce! The Rib Sauce is unimaginably delicious. I get it on the side for the brisket (very nice and smoky) and\or the sausage. They make their sausage right there, and i know people that have driven more than 100 to get it. I'm not usually a sausage fan, but this is extraordinary. The ONLY thing that cost them a star is - they are not open on Mondays, and that is more than a little inconvenient.
