Went here on a weekday evening with some friends. I had the cheese lasagna, which came with a slice of garlic bread/Texas toast, and a side salad. Another had salad with blackened chicken and wine. The other had hamloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy plus a side salad. All of us enjoyed the food without issues. My side salad arrived with bacon, but was quickly replaced with a meatless salad. Personally I felt the toast was a bit tasteless, but the lasagna was really good. No vegan options, but plenty of vegetarian options. The portions were a generous size and the prices were fair. We went when they opened, which meant we got prime parking in their lot just past the entrance--no meter, no ticket, no downtown-parking-induced rage. Score one for me. Inside? I am very sad to say that I don't think we will be making it back here. This place use to be super busy, have a big extensive menu, and be very home style. Now, they aren't too busy, the interior was remodeled to a more contemporary style, and the menu is small on a printer piece of paper. Buns has been in Delaware for as long as I can remember and this was my first time there. They have some indoor and outdoor seating available. The menu isn't all that exciting. We ordered the fish and chips. The fries were good but the fish looked like frozen fish sticks. It surprisingly tasted better than it looked and the food came out hot. Had lunch here today. Beautiful old building, very clean and the staff was very professional and nice. Our waitress was great, she checked on us quite a few times and kept our drinks full. Yesterday we had the opportunity to eat at Bun's. We were lucky enough to get a table on the patio - there were 4 of us. Two Cobb salads and two lasagnas and we could not have been more delighted! Brunch stop. Not very crowded, was easy to get a group seated. Nice menu options for Brunch menu or lunch menu. Friendly place. The biscuits and gravy were average. Sausage gravy was actually good, but biscuits were hard and dry. The amount of gravy was not much, needed more to make biscuits edible. After food was delivered the server disappeared so everyone was almost done eating before I could solve the portion size of the gravy. Coffee sat empty most of the meal. We had such a lovely day tooling around Groovy Plant Ranch, Hoof Hearted and finally landed at Buns in Delaware for dinner. Promptly sat at an outside table and then was ignored by wait staff for the next 15 minutes! No one even acknowledged that we were there AT ALL. They had 2 wait staff with what appeared to be 2 active tables each at 6:45. Sooooo disappointing and will not be back. Downtown Delaware is so cool with tons of other restaurants that look enticing. An honest review. We were sat right away outside on the patio. My wife had the shrimp skewers and they were awesome. The mixed vegetables which she shared with me were spectacular. The Tavern chips were also very good. Cobb salad was ok, and the fish and chips were a little small. The biggest problem we had was with my chicken fried steak. It was pretty tough because I think they just cut it thick and it doesn't come out as crispy and tender as the hamburger inn which is located across the street. I also wonder if the quality of meat used as there was grizzle in mine throughout. Maybe just not well trimmed? It might've been soggy more so than usual since I had to wait about 10 minutes to eat it as I was just being polite because that's how long it took to serve everybody in our party their food. We were a party of 10 so I completely understand but I'd rather have the food under a warmer and come out at the same time. Service was friendly but there certainly were some mistakes made. Buns was established in the mid 1800's. A large restaurant filled with booths and tables. The bar area is located in an adjacent room with out door seating. Plenty of space to have a party. I have to say, now I know why they have been around for sooo long. They know how to do food!! Definitely delicious! Worth a trip back. Do yourself a favor and stop in. This was nice! And reasonable! The staff was friendly and talkative, which is good! I had, had previous not so great vibes with people who owned it previously, but they new owners do a nice job! And the building and restaurant has a cool history as being one of the oldest in the state. My server Ian was cool as was the rest of the staff I encounter. It s nice to see younger people with goals who take pride in where they work. He recommended the grilled sirloin which was good: A simple nice grilled steak with great char marks and seasoning. The potato was okay, and I couldn't tell if it was from a box or they peeled them, but they were tasty and a nice large portion. It just needed butter which they brought me. The Caesar salad was very good, and I am picky about both salads and dressings... I could have even eaten more of that! I am glad they are preserving it and its legacy. I am also glad they are open on Monday when many of their competitors in Delaware are NOT! When I first thought of Bunns, I thought of old people, and this clearly contemporary with an updated menu! Service was friendly and quick. Prices were good. My husband ordered the fried chicken sandwich w spicy honey and he loved it. My sister and husband enjoyed their burgers. I had the chicken fried steak and it was extremely tender. However, the gravy was smothered in pepper. It tasted like they literally spilled the pepper in it. On Tuesday a friend and I ate at Buns for the first time since the NEW OWNERS took over the restaurant. We had had a very bad experience under the previous ownership (I will spare you the details) but we heard that it has improved so we thought we would give it a try. I'm so glad we did! Having just watched a bag of ice been dropped on the dirty bar floor and then not only emptied into, but the now dirty (with debris on one side of it) bag been completely inserted into the ice bin contaminating all the ice. We arrived at 11:30 am with 2 children. It took an hour to get the food after 20 minutes to have our orders taken. We were out of there after 1 pm. We ordered a triple decker. Ate a third. I had visited a single time since the changes started late in 2024, but found a paltry paper menu and few customers even thought the dining room redesigned was beautiful. Well, if you haven't visited lately, you owe them another shot at your business. We visited on Saturday March 29 to find a crowded dining room and patio, and a brand new completely reprinted 2-sided menu. it contains several new features and many old favorites. There were lunch and dinner selections to please most any picky eater. even some new desert including banana pudding, peach cobbler and key lime pie. The least you can do is make your own instead of being lazy. Options on the menu are also limited.
