I cannot say enough good about their BBQ!!!!! If you live in Memphis, Nashville, Birmingham, Jackson MS, Tuscaloosa, Oxford (Ole Miss), Starkville (Mississippi State), drive to Florence for this BBQ at lunch and enjoy the day in Florence. Then go back for dinner. When I am in Florence I could eat a Bunyan's sandwich for every meal. I am not kidding. It is that good. I will say that I think Flobama on Court Street may have better pulled pork, but nobody touches Bunyan's hot slaw and their BBQ sauce. I visit Florence once a year and every year, the folks behind the counter are not friendly. They aren't rude, they're just not friendly. It is awkward. But their food is worth the awkwardness. So disappointed!! "Worst BBQ ever!", my wife said. We just moved to Florence and my wife is from Birmingham, she loves BBQ but hated this place. I'm beginning to think some yelpers don't have taste buds haha. We looked in the area for the best BBQ and this place came up. We opted for a large pork plate and the rib snack, it came to $16 which we thought was ok as we were warned the portions were a good size. The portions were not big at all, we both thought it was too expensive for the amount of food given. The ribs were fairly tough and tasted of lighter fluid or something chemically. The pork came wrapped in a small piece of grease proof paper. We thought they had given us a small instead of a large. The woman serving us said there is '40lbs of meat, the same as a large sandwich'. I thought that can't be right as 40 lbs is huge?? We opened the food, both looked at each other and said is this it? The pork was just okay, my wife said it was literally the worst BBQ she has ever had. We swapped the slaw for beans as neither of us like it, they were in tiny portions and tasted both sweet and a little spicy. We will not be going back there especially when there are other places to try... Glad we tried it but no thanks! read more

I read an online article recently listing Bunyan's as one of the best BBQ places in Florence so recently I was near ECM hospital and saw the building and thought I'd give it a try. I was not disappointed. First, their sauce is amazing. They have a hot and mild sauce (the mild is still spicy) and both are delicious. We had a rib plate and a family pack of pulled pork. My wife said the ribs may have been the best she ever had. The pulled pork was a little dry but after pouring a helping of sauce on it the flavor exploded into a fantastic BBQ sandwich. Went for the first time 3 weeks ago when visiting my family in Florence, my family wanted to treat this California girl to real bbq! I was not disappointed at all, it was amazing! I had the pulled pork sandwich with the mustard slaw, I had never heard of slaw without mayo. Omg it was sooooo good I don't think I can go back to traditional coleslaw, it was tangy with some kick! Then I slathered on their spicey bbq sauce on my sandwich and fell in love, I could drink that stuff it's so good! That bbq sauce is so good as my cousin said "It will make you want to slap your mama" hahaha. I was so excited when my my cousins surprised me and sent me home with a bottle of the bbq sauce, I'm not sharing it's all mine! I can't wait to go back to Florence to see family but most of all to go back to Bunyan's. I definitely want to try their hot dogs and fried pies. I've been obsessed with Bunyan's hot slaw since high school, when I bagged groceries next door to earn money to spend at Bunyan's. I never complain about service so it's a good thing this place cooks up some good grub. The potato salad is excellent. Anyhow the lady who took my order was so rude it was almost funny. She said "what you want" gave me an icy stare then when I politely told her walked away from me and told another lady to finish talking with me. I searched the reviews and landed at Bunyan's Bar-B-Que. I was disappointed, it must have been that it was just before closing. The ribs were on the dry side, no smoke flavor and fell right off the bone. That's a big no no inthe BBQ competition world, the portion was generous though.
