That is legitimately the simple truth of it all. There is not much along the route in general, and really your options for a food stop are limited to what you can find in the Rockingham or Laurinburg area. Getting something that is not fast food, takes a little bit of advanced planning and a significant roll of the dice. Thankfully we have Yelp to guide us. I found this simple lunch spot on the app before leaving Greensboro, and plugging it into our GPS, it simply required us taking one of the "old" routes through Rockingham and Hamlet. These days there is a highway bypass that totally avoids the traffic lights that cause delays in that area. We decided it was worth a 10 minute detour to get something else, and we chose Caleb's. A little hole in and old shopping center near the Wal-Mart. Honestly, wouldn't have it any other way. If a place can focus on the food and do it well, I don't need ambience. We started with some of their collard green egg rolls, and I like this choice for the menu. It's really not difficult to make an egg roll, and that crispy shell is one of life's most simple pleasures. The greens on the inside were tender and tasty, and we both enjoyed the sweet chili sauce dip. For lunch I went with their steak philly on texas toast with home chips. Given the price of the sandwich, I was happy with the size and the flavor, it was just enough to satiate me. The chips were nice and crispy, but both of us agreed they were exceptionally over-salted. The ranch dip helped (as did the remnants of the sweet chili sauce), but otherwise, it would have been too much salt. Price was very affordable, in reach for any local, and somewhat cheap by today's standard for those of us from out of town. Definitely a five star experience for what it is, where it is, and our time there. We'd stop on a future trip!

My fellow veteran buddy and I stopped by the IHOP on Hwy 74 in Rockingham around 1:30 PM to discuss some upcoming events. We had a really bad experience here in the past, but one of the servers, Bayleigh, was the sole reason we decided to give it another shot. Coincidentally, Bayleigh ended up being our server again today. Even though the restaurant was short-staffed--a cook actually had to seat us because he was waiting on the next shift--Bayleigh willingly stayed past her shift just to take care of us because she recognized us. Her dedication and customer service were truly 10/10. Unfortunately, the kitchen didn't match her effort: The Food Quality: They were out of ingredients for my original sandwich choice, so I went with the bacon, avocado, chicken sandwich on whole grain toast. My buddy ordered the beef Philly. Both came with onion rings, and I got a side of fries. Kitchen Mistakes: My sandwich was initially brought out missing the avocado, but Bayleigh caught it right away and had the kitchen fix it. When it came back, the chicken looked burnt, and the toast was so dry, hard, and over-toasted that it was literally falling apart in my hands--I had to smash the avocado just to bind the sandwich together. Inedible Saltiness: Worst of all, both of our sandwiches were so brutally salty it tasted like the lid fell off the shaker and dumped right onto the food. Neither of us could finish our meals. We ended up just drinking our drinks, paying, and leaving. Bayleigh apologized sincerely for the kitchen's mistakes, and she was easily the best part of the entire visit. Management really needs to address the kitchen staff and food prep, because servers like Bayleigh shouldn't have to carry the burden of a terrible kitchen. The 3 stars are for experience with the food. But Bayleigh gets a 5 stars review

A Review of Hardee's, or: How I Lost Faith in Biscuits…read more The visit began, as many Southern tragedies do, with hope and hunger and ended with me Clorox wiping the soles of my shoes in a parking lot like I had just walked through a crime scene. Let's start with the facilities, which I hesitate to call restrooms because no rest was found there. The smell alone nearly knocked me over. It was the kind of odor that clings to your soul, something sour and strange that made me gag the moment I walked in. The floor was not greasy, it was simply filthy. Dirt and mystery grime clung to every corner. The paper towel dispenser was just for show, like a sad plastic tomb for dried up, previously moist paper that hinted at horrors I refuse to imagine. I shudder to think of what those towels had once been wet with. Now, onto the coffee or should I say, the half cup of ambition. I poured with great anticipation, only to be greeted with the sputtering finale of a pot that clearly gave up on life. And no napkins in sight. I asked for some and was handed one. One solitary napkin. Like it was a rare artifact. The chicken biscuit, my usual order, my comfort, my edible hug, arrived looking pale and uncertain. The biscuit was still doughy in the middle, like it decided halfway through baking to take a nap. The chicken had the flavor profile of apathy. The hash browns? A brave but failed attempt at becoming food. Limp, pale, and about as satisfying as chewing a damp coaster. We opted to eat in the car, because the dining area looked like it had been hit by a fryer explosion and no one told the floor. Every tile shimmered under a thin coat of grease, just daring someone to try walking with confidence. This location does not need a manager, it needs a full blown intervention. A mop, some bleach, divine mercy, and a health inspector with a strong stomach. Preferably soon. In conclusion: come hungry, leave haunted.
