We brought our four kids here and had such a great experience! The food was absolutely delicious--hamburgers and ice cream were a hit. What really made the night special was the service. Our server and the owner were incredibly personable, warm, and welcoming. You can tell they genuinely care about their guests. For two people, who had two cheese burgers and two tap waters. It was $40 including tip. For comparison two cheese burger baskets, with cheese curds, and root beer shake at Culver's was $22. Wish I could give them 6 stars. Went before Hawkeye football game. As far as I could tell, they had one person working front of house and one (they owner, I think) in the back. Lucas (up front) ran his butt off. Literally running table to table. At one point I think he had 9 tables plus the bar and we really had excellent service. Owner came out and checked with everyone. Thanked us for coming. Food was good, fresh, tasty. Granted, it's a simple menu, but they did it well. Only draw back, not a big fan of pouring IPA in a snifter, not even high gravity. Eat a whole burger, feel stuffed and still want to order another one kinda good. All of the sauces for the burgers are homemade and deserve this honorable mention. My boyfriend and I went here for lunch a little while ago and it was delicious! The burgers were nice and juicy and the bun was able to withstand the weight of the patty/ toppings enough that it didn't get soggy for me (a pet peeve). My side Caesar salad was very crisp, tangy, and cheesy. ANOTHER burger place moved in downtown. But this one is actually a bit different. They have so many burger-centric items on their menu that you won't find elsewhere in Iowa City! A loose meat, sloppy joe-esk item. There's a breakfast themed burger... that has a WAFFLES AND SYRUP?!? Heck, there is event a burger with nachos as a topping?! BurgerHaul has been on my radar since I peeped their awesome patio this fall. Gosh, I can't wait until I can visit that! The Bavarian Pretzel looks legit and the cocktails they were serving up looked tasty. We ordered via CHOMP Delivery on a Sunday evening. My kids ate all their chicken tenders and fries. I, being me, didn't order a burger because I saw a pork tenderloin on the menu. I am a connoisseur of sorts. Let me say, it did not disappoint! (The tenderloin was 2-3 times bigger than the bun, naturally.) This burger joint took over Saloon's location therefore parking is typical for downtown-- I recommend the Dubuque Street Ramp. Pricing is pretty standard. I also believe they have a couple vegetarian options. (I.e. Magic Mushroom Burger) Burger Haul isn't just another burger place. In town for a few days and needed a good hole in the wall burger and beer. Place is exactly that. Has maybe 10 booths 4-2 tops and a nice bar with some couches at the end. Great feel and vibe , menu solid with some stuff for the "college kids" at Iowa. Son had spicy chicken sandwich and seasoned well, fries were good. I had the jalapeño jam burger and super tasty, onion rings with it are super thin and excellent. Has rotating local beers on tap and the Bar Manager-Faith, was fantastic! Man, I wanted to give this place a fair chance given it was homecoming weekend and places were busy. They only had a bartender and two wait staff. We were seated promptly and then overheard the other wait staff tell subsequent customers the kitchen is short-handed and the wait for food could be 1-1.5 hours. We were not told this upon seating. The place was perhaps half full at this point. Most turned away after hearing the wait. OK, so someone in the kitchen called in, food is going to be a wait. Maybe then focus on what you CAN CONTROL and refill waters, ask for further drinks, and focus on exceptional customer service elsewhere. My family of 4 was there for 1.5 hours in total. Our waters were refilled once. Neither adult was asked for anything further to drink after one drink each. The food was good, but not worth 1.5 hours. Onion rings seemed withered and frozen out of a bag. More like shoestrings. Mozerella sticks also store-bought with weak marinara. Chicken sandwich and burger decent, but in general it just seemed like everyone there was absolutely done with their day, and it was 7 pm. Adding a 4% credit card charge seems excessive as well. I am willing to give this place another chance on a subsequent visit as our daughter is only a freshman. I may update my review later since most seem to have had a much better experience. read more

I stopped in for lunch a few weeks ago and tried the Spice Machine and some fries. I loved the burger (especially the sauce and mushrooms), and the fries were pretty good. The only thing keeping me from being a regular is the price of the food. It's not a completely unreasonable price for a burger (most are $12 or $13) if it were to come with a side of fries. Among the several burger places nearby, it's possible to get a burger with a side for that price or less. To be fair, I am of the opinion that even an amazing burger is still *just* a burger, but if you are willing to pay these prices for a burger with premium toppings and sides that cost extra, this is a great place. Great location in the ped mall. I would definitely stop by after a long day at school or to start off a night on the town. I would recommend parking in either the Old Capitol ramp or the Dubuque Street ramp. The pricing was on par with other restaurants downtown, but I would argue that the food is superior! Above all else, the service was absolutely phenomenal! The staff (and the owner!!!) were very professional and friendly. The owner made sure to stop by every table to ensure that every customer was having a great experience. If you're looking for a great bite to eat and great experiences with the staff, look no further.
