Ann went straight for her favorite, the shrimp and grits, because according to her, Bistro on 2nd Street has some of the best around. Ryleigh had the fried shrimp with waffle fries and slaw, and judging by how fast her plate disappeared, I'd say she approved. The food and service have been excellent every single time we've been there, and tonight was no exception. Ryleigh kept us entertained on the drive with her riddles, which might have been the only thing harder to figure out than deciding what to order.

Arriving at 6 p.m., we found plenty of street parking in front of the restaurant. The dining room was half full, and we were promptly seated. The dining room was a long and skinny space with a bar running down one side. It was not well-lit, and the candles on each table were not lit, which was a bit of a bummer. For a space with many hard services and high ceilings, the sound levels were surprisingly low, making it easy to converse at our table. We were warmly greeted by our server, who hooked us up with drinks. The drink menu had a good variety of beer, wine, and cocktails including numerous wines by the glass. The food menu had a good selection of dishes at various price ranges. My Aunt ordered the mushroom chicken pasta dish. She loved the chicken, pasta, and other bits but thought everything was drowned in the cream sauce. It did look more like soup to me when served to her. My wife went with shrimp and grits. She is a sucker for grits when traveling in the south. Her dish was just ok, and she had trouble finding the sautéed peppers and onions that were supposed to be in there My Uncle selected the special of the day, mahi-mahi. It was probably the best dish we ordered, and he loved it. I started with a house side salad that was very fresh and delicious. The ranch dressing was served very cold in a metal ramekin which was perfect. My entree of the grilled steak sandwich was disappointing. It just wasn't flavorful, and the sautéed veggies I picked for my side were served cold. Overall, it's a good place to eat in Cheraw, but there's plenty of room for improvement.

The energy was cool and the staff were super friendly and welcoming, which I always appreciate when I'm somewhere new. Now, let's talk about the food. I wanted to love it, but it just wasn't giving what it needed to give. I had the wings, fries, and a drink and all of it was just ... okay. Not terrible, but definitely not memorable either. You ever eat something and just know it could've hit harder? That was me. That said, I wouldn't write it off completely. If I had more time in town I'd definitely swing back through and give something else on the menu a shot. I did see that they do karaoke on the weekends and that might be the real selling point; fun, casual, and a chance to see the locals cut loose. I would've went during my last visit if I didn't have laryingitis. Haha Overall, it's a decent little spot with potential. Worth checking out if you're in the area but manage your expectations on the food and drinks.

Nevertheless, I would have never considered that the level of business would cause our food to come 2 HOURS (no exaggeration) after ordering. Thankfully my party was staying at the hotel and we had a lot to talk about. It seemed like the kitchen could only make two plates at a time, and there were long pauses between servers moving food. For my table, finally two burgers appeared. It took another 10 minutes for the third entrée to appear, with other tables' food going out in between. Not a good look. Both people who ordered burgers at my table ordered them medium and both came out well done. My colleague didn't finish his. I ate mine, but it was so dry that I had to drench it in ketchup to get it down. On the bonus side, I jokingly suggested to our server that we should get a free round of drinks for our wait, which she surprised us after our food delivery with that free round, which was super nice; thus the comments that service was great. Just the food and kitchen needed major help.

My favorites are the Country Fried Steak Biscuit that melts in your mouth , the Country Ham and Egg Biscuit which is just the right saltiness , and the Chicken Sandwich which has more of a pepper flavor than the one Carl's Jr makes in Las Vegas where I live . I grew up in Bennettsville , but had friends and girlfriends in Cheraw and we would cruise the Sonic across the street , which is now moved by the Walmart . I came to town to take pictures , see old friends , and relive memories . I got the 2 Roast Beef Sandwich Special and boy was I let down . They are about a quarter of the size they were when I was a kid . They still tasted good though . I always like theirs better than Arby's . The store was the cleanest Hardee's I went to in the 2 weeks I was traveling all over N.C. and S.C. I went to 4 different ones during my trip . Gastonia , Kings Mountain , Waynesville , and Cheraw . Cheraw is still a pretty town and I wish Bennettsville was as nice as it used to be . I left in 1985 , but still make trips whenever I can to the South that I love .
