The food is always amazing and the car hops whom take your order start their first job working here while they are in high schooler or on summer break. I highly recommend you try out B&K - South, once in your life, in Peru, Indiana. They're so kind, caring and deliver your order in a very timely manner. I also recommend their gallons of Root Beer. No non-dairy creamer or milk options nor raw sugar. Again, I roll with it. It's not really a coffee shop per-se. However, with "cafe" in the name... Garden Gate has surprisingly good spaghetti. Not like what I can make at home, but far better than what I expected during visits before today. I would like to see more plant based options, but I remember what town I'm in. You get used to making due with what you can get around here. No fish on the menu either nor any fried foods. Sandwiches come with chips or slaw. They do have a fired pizza oven. If you like meatloaf and mashed potatoes with green beans, this would be the perfect place for you. They have daily specials on a board. Their veggie wrap is okay. The bread/pretzel sticks are buttered & also okay. Mashed potatoes, great. Never had the green beans since may contain bacon. Garden Gate good with accommodating substitution requests. I do like the long bench in back so you can sit as you wait for carryout or to be seated in the evening. Quality furnishings & ambience although the barrels from the brewery this once housed don't exactly jive. It's nice there is a private parking lot with a side door since street parking downtown can be hairy, especially this close to the courthouse. Some outdoor seating. A lot more seating inside & much better air conditioning than the old location. Better tables and chairs which are actually comfortable unlike the old place. I don't like that they pool tips. I tip extremely well, & I would like it to go to the person I tipped. I'm also not a fan of tipping at the beginning of the visit. I'll over tip & not get stellar service afterward. Did they even see it? Now I feel like George Costanza. I have been given rather large to go cups of decaf in the past. I didn't even want to ask for one today. It's usually clean though sometimes the tables & ladies' room could use extra care. Dirty tables can pile up at times. Confusing system. Good food but not much that I want. I really just go to have somewhere in this town to sit & to KNOW it's actually decaf in my cup. Sometimes it's loud, sometimes not. Service isn't quite what it was when this location first opened. No signage saying it was closed from what I could see. Went inside. Tall self-serve menus which are new to me took up more floor space than the limited seating area. At least one appeared to be out of order. They looked filthy and blocked the view into the restaurant. A couple people were waiting for orders, it turned out. It wasn't clear at first whether they were waiting to order. I walked up to the only open register of the two there. The young man behind the register was sitting quite low to the floor. It became apparent after I ordered that he had a broken foot or leg because he wore a colorful cast. He was personable and promptly took my order. I sat on one of the low stools attached to one of the couple of tables in the place. I didn't wait long. I saw two others pick up food as I waited. I gathered from them that our numbers were on our receipts. No directions had been given, and my receipt is hard to read. A family was in the process of finishing ordering as I picked up my bag. The woman calling out numbers was not friendly and said nothing other than the number for each. She set my bag down on a metal counter next to a puddle of Coke and immediately walked away. I looked in my bag and saw the outside of the burger wrappers were greasy. I also had no napkins. No napkins were to be found there nor at the messy drink station. The woman had disappeared, so I had to ask the guy at the counter. He politely brought me a few, but I felt bad because it was clear it was difficult for him to walk in his cast. A few flies were inside the restaurant, and in addition to the spill on the pickup area counter, the drink station counter and floors were quite dirty with spills as well. Thankfully, the burgers were a treat for my dogs and not for human consumption. The price was quite high at $4.25 or $4.26 (receipt barely legible) for two regular plain cheeseburgers. At home, I saw the burgers were sloppily put together. Patties hanging out of buns on one side. Cheese barely melted. I was glad to get out of there. The filthiness is inexcusable. The cashier himself was alright. McDonald's should have given him something more ergonomic and closer to the eye level of the customers to sit on unless his injury required him to be that close to the floor. I suppose it's commendable he was working despite his injury. The woman handing out orders should make guests feel welcome and appreciated and not just a number. It wasn't busy. I wasn't able to take the online survey because I can't see the entire code. I seriously doubt I would return. The McDonald's company I knew since childhood is evidently no more, and this is the dirtiest one I've ever visited.
