Great little burger joint. We've come by multiple times and I'm a big fan of the grilled chicken sandwich. The portion is great for the price point and they don't skimp on the toppings (you pick - definitely recommend the spicy mayo). The fries and poutine are classics, can't go wrong. I love this place. They made really good, quality burgers. I gave this a 4 because I do think they could season their patties more but the burgers are huge and so juicy. The portion sizes of the sides are really big, you definitely have a hard time finishing your meal. I'd recommend getting their seasoned/spicy fries (whatever they are). You do have to wait for awhile for your food but it's because they make it fresh to order - so worth the wait. And it's usually pretty busy, again still so worth it. read more

"Meh I've experience better" is the best way to express how BF and I felt about Burgers & Shakes. He is a burger person, I'm not. We work in Barrhaven so we decided to stop by this burger joint on a Tuesday around 5pm. The place wasn't really busy, but plenty of staff was at attention to take our order and cook our burgers. It seemed to be getting busier as we were leaving after our meal. I got the Char burger combo, and he got the Super Char burger combo. No shakes. It came to around 27$ for both of us, the combos both included a can of soda + a small fry. The patties were cooked well, not too much, nor too little. The service was friendly and fast. The fries were "meh". The patty to bun ratio was my biggest disappointment. There was too much bun for the patty. And the patty was not seasoned, at all. Oh, and they charge for 1 slice of cheddar cheese. Overall, in my opinion the food tasted bland and there was nothing special about it. I always get worried when a business stops accepting credit cards, or goes cash-only. Since the pandemic started, more and more people are embracing cashless transactions. Who uses cash anymore? So, thankfully they still accept debit. Having not been here for a while, a met my cousin for lunch. We hadn't seen each other since pre-covid, and we were both in the mood for a good burger. Entering the parking lot, the reason for not visiting often quickly came to mind. There's hardly ever any parking available, and the if you are lucky to find a spot, the spaces are so squishy, that you can barely get in/out of your car! We ordered a burger and shake each. Food arrived faster that I remember, which was a pleasant surprise. Until, I took the first bite. Delicious? Yes. But, either my burger was overcooked, or it was previously cooked and re-heated from the fridge. My chocolate shake was FANTASTIC. BETTER THAN 5-GUYS! I got in right before a huge line up -- man was it packed ( it was around 1pm on a Sunday) Waiting about 10 Minutes for my order and it was totally worth the wait. I ordered the super charboiled burger with a medium size of fresh cut fries. This place is legit better than 5-Guys. 5-Guys burgers seem so measly compared to these guys. The patti is made in the restaurant the the buns are nicely grilled. These burgers are thiqqq and juicy. Not to mention quite large. The fries are actually amazing as well! I happened to be in Barrhaven the other day dropping something off for a friend, and was absolutely starving. I couldn't handle a drive thru, and spotted this new group of businesses off Strandherd and Fallowfield, and decided to check them out. The sandwich shop was closed, so I decided to check out Burgers and Shakes in hopes that I could get a relatively non-greasy chicken burger. This place is obviously new, but it was actually super busy when I got in there. There was a fairly long lineup, which just goes to show how much people in Barrhaven are chomping at the bit for great local businesses! At the front counter you place your order and pay, and then move on to the second counter (unless you're there for ice cream - that's at the first counter and looks delicious!). I ordered the grilled chicken burger and took my place in line. This was certainly not fast food, which was good, but keep in mind fresh food takes time. Even longer if you want chicken, as the grill master was really hardcore about cooking it for the right amount of time (which was good, but painstakingly slow). I'm sure most of the staff are new, but the young lady at the toppings counter was very flustered and got people's orders mixed up a couple of times. They only had one person doing the toppings and one person doing the grill from what I could see, which they're probably going to want to increase if they stay busy. There's a great selection of fresh toppings here including the usual lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, etc, but I also noticed some pickled turnip and other fun ingredients. I sat down in their eating area, which is quite spacious (and very minimalistic, but clean). The chicken looked like it was worth the wait - nicely seasoned and had a pretty colour to it. However, it was a bit lacklustre for me. It definitely could have used some more seasoning or sauce, and was a little bit dry. That being said, the toppings were very fresh and the bun tasty. They still have a few kinks to work out, like any new business, but I think this could be a great spot to grab a burger in Barrhaven. I've been going to Burgers and Shakes every so often since it opened. Number one tip, BRING CASH, as they don't have a card machine for credit but do take debt by all means there is an ATM machine in the store but there's a fee. There is a wide section in frozen treats that are good. Right now because of Covid there is no soft serve but milk shakes are tasty. I get the burgers and there are a variety of sizes to choose from and you can personally pick your toppings. Burgers are pretty good. I enjoy the fries but not a fan of the onion ring has they are thin in the batter. There is plenty of indoor seating and everything is always clean. Covid -19 has brought a reasonable amount of outdoor seating. Staff has always been friendly and service has been quick. If you haven't tried Burgers & Shakes at least once I'd recommend it. read more

My sisters are quite picky but really enjoyed it I ordered 1 a small poutine with extra cheese, and I ordered my other Sister a pogo and fry combo. My boyfriend got a burger and a jumbo hot dog with all the fixings. We also got 3 shakes , Pina colada, peanut butter and chocolate all of which they loved. I like how this place has a variety of things to order from, and quite a few shake flavours. It came pretty quickly about 30 minutes after I order. Poutine was ok. Large portion sizes. Fries definitely could have been cooked more. They were half raw and this is the third time I've tried and had the same. Restaurant sitting area is just ok. Be aware this restaurant only takes cash or debit. No credit cards! Service is quick. Andrea's review nailed the logistics aspects so I will just say I found this new Barrhaven location very clean and easy to see what's going on behind the counter. It does get a bit cramped, unlike Five Guys, so I recommend you keep any small children under control (I almost stepped on one). It beats ordering through the window and sitting on benches at Hintonburger though! They also have a nice patio. Speaking of Hintonburger the beef patties are not heavily seasoned here, nor thick and juicy like you would find at Vera's Burger Shack. But that's alright, they are sure to please all ages. What makes them good is the way they are charbroiled. They even put the cheese and bun on the grill towards the end. Toppings are put on while you wait and watch. Menu options are many but very clearly displayed with prices. I had a regular 6oz cheeseburger and small fries and it was plenty. I could definitely taste the charcoal. First they should be called "burger or shakes", since you cant do a combo with milk shakes. Which made my meal $43 for 2 ppl. Ordered a chicken burger for my wife with a poutine instead of fries, asked for the fries to be extra crispy but it wasn't even cooked. The "crispy chicken burger didn't taste good and was not CRISPY at all. I ordered a double burger with fries. Again ordered the fries extra crispy, but they were soggy and tasteless (not sure how you can make fries tasteless). First bite of the burger was ok, but the more I bit into that monster, it became more and more gamy, odor-full and tasteless. Needless to say this is not recommended. I've been about 5 times and always disappointed. Burgers are big but massive buns. I sliced have the bottom off with a bread knife at home. Fries feel like they are frozen and aren't good at all. It has been hot in Ottawa! My husband and I have a rule that whoever is home first makes dinner (lately that's been him) and since he works outside all day we have been really bad and eating "out". Seeing as how my husband never wants to stay and eat at a restaurant, this is yet another takeout review, so I'll try to keep that in mind as I write this. There aren't too many different restaurants in Barrhaven, so when we realized this new place was opening up and was such a hit in Manotick, we added it to our list of places to try. Last night I had finally had enough waiting and decided to go for it. My husband ordered their Char Burger and a Mocha shake. I got the Steak Sandwich and a Nutella shake, and we got a Spicy Fries Poutine to share. I'll start with the shakes since my husband and I agreed that they were delicious. They were good enough that even though dairy is not kind to either of us, we both finished the last drop. The jury is still out as to whether Nutella was better than Mocha, but I loved mine and he loved his, so who cares? They have so many different flavours to choose from I think even if all they had were shakes, we would be back. Hubby loved his burger. He loved being able to choose his own fresh toppings, and truthfully I was a bit jealous and shortly after seeing him unwrap it, I knew I had ordered the wrong thing. The steak sandwich was what you could expect for a fast-ish food place. For whatever reason I never consider this when I go for one anywhere, I see the word steak and, unless I'm at a steakhouse or bbq type restaurant, am usually disappointed. It wasn't all bad though, the flavour was good, it was tender, it was cooked well... It just wasn't what my mind was hoping for and left me wanting a bit more. Thankfully, we still had poutine! Let me start with the cheese curds. The perfectly squeaky and delicious cheese curds- the absolute star of the dish. I would order it again even if it was just for the curds, because let's be honest, a good cheese curd is hard to find. The gravy wasn't bad either, but I usually base my poutine evaluation on the cheese and the fries, my husband is the gravy man and loved it so that says it all. The fries... I'm not sure I can give a really fair commentary on them but here's my best attempt! They were well seasoned for spicy fries, not too salty like in many other places and they were fresh. I usually like my poutine fries to be crispy, but I can't really judge that since we got it to go, so clearly I need to head back just for this. Mm this place was good enough that I'm not craving poutine and a milkshake at 7am, so if that doesn't convince you to at least give it a shot, I don't know what will! Ordered a small and large milk shake and the cups although looked different (one shorter and rounder and the other narrower and taller) they held the same amount of liquid. One of my favorite burger joints! Not only they have yummy burgers but they have different sized burgers which is awesome! We used to order the super charbroiled burger (huge) but that just put us straight into a coma, so we downsized a bit. The super size is actually great for 2 meals! Hubby loves their vanilla shakes! Their fries and chicken sandwiches are great too. We always order ahead and never had an issue. Totally recommend this place! I have visited this first-rate family establishment a few times over the past year. The storefront offers a casual and cozy atmosphere. I have ordered during peak hours, and their service is still fast and efficient. You will not find the modish gourmet burgers, such as the "Gotta Be KD" or "Born To Be Brie Wild" burgers, found at The Works. I do not believe Burgers & Shakes' value proposition is to offer those type of eccentric burgers with mountainous selection of toppings. I deduce that their simple menu selection can be less painstaking to review than one of those gourmet burger joints, especially if you are rushed to eat. Furthermore, I would recommend their burgers over the other current geolocated offerings in Barrhaven (Five Guys, Royal Oak, and other pubs). To date, I have sampled their Charbroiled burger, Fries and a few flavours of their Shakes. The density and texture of the beef is definitely quite savory. Sandwiched between the patty is a fresh, fluffy, untoasted bun. Toppings (lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion) are fresh-cut daily. Lastly, their thick crispy fries tastefully complement the burger. Well trying out Burgers and Shakes against my better judgement due to extreme disappointment on my first visit after the opened. Again I was extremely disappointed. I went with my wife and 4 kids, spent like $90. The rest of the family seemed to like it but I had the double patty one??? The most expensive one, in a bowl without a bun. My disappointment came from the fact that the meat was totally WAY OVERCOOKED? A few times I had to take a sip of my kids milkshake just so I could swallow the bite of shoe leather. This is not what I would expect from paying $12 for a burger. I won't be coming back here. read more

Good honest burger. Made with real fresh ingredients and fresh chuck. Burgers were good but nothing special. Patties were a little dry and did not seem to be spiced in any way. Service was slow but I think we got somebody on their very first shift so it's hard to fault them for that. Not bad overall but Vera's does a better burger imho. read more

This Burgers and Shakes is half way between home and work. The food is identical to Burgers and Shakes in Manotick. There is lots of seating inside. The outside seating wasn't open when I went, although I would have liked to sit outside. The service is a notch above. The parking sucks and theres no way to fix that. I just don't understand the rave! I've had many people highly recommend this place, but in all honesty, the food was not good. Hence why some people who negatively commented in the review wrote a story.... Anyways. I don't usually do reviews because its a waste of time and obviously not a lot of people who are happy are going to comment on a review. You will find more negative reviews than positive. When I clicked the review section, I was truly shocked on some of the peoples comments. "Burgers have no taste" "Pricey" ?? I'm sorry, have you been anywhere else?? It's average price and on top of thar, you're getting SO much food! They're not cheap with their portions. You're talking about 100% PURE BEEF. What more do you want?? I've been going there for about 8 years now and its ALWAYS delicious. Burgers aren't frozen at all and delivered the same day! They put Montreal steak spice and dress it to your liking! Fries are freshly cut, you can see them doing it. Shakes are real ice cream, NOT soft ice cream, along with any real flavors. This place has won best burger and shake in 2012, 2014 and 2015!! Like I said, I don't know what some people are talking about. McDonalds big mac is the same size as their Junior burger and Mcdonald is crap meat. Big MacMeal is $5.70 without tax, their junior burger combo with fries and a drink is similar price and their burgers are bigger! Five Guys is $6.40 and their burgers are smaller. My point is, don't throw "its expensive" when you haven't been to other places to judge it. I most DEFINITELY recommend this place. Despite what others may say. A friend and I ate at the Burgers&Shakes in Barrhaven today. We both ordered a junior grilled burger - one with cheese and one without. They both arrived with cheese. The patty was nowhere near as tasty as I was led to believe it would. I also ordered a vanilla milkshake. It was watery, somewhat lumpy and tasted odd. We deduced there was too much milk (skim?) and should have been made with the smooth ice cream. I was offered another shake but I declined to take the chance. Terrible Experience. You can definitley get a much better burger and enjoy a better atmosphere at many other places. For some reason they make you dress your bun way before your burger is ready. By the time you get your burger its a completely soggy gross mess. The last time I was there I asked if I could dress the burger when the meat was actually ready. They gave me a bunch of attitude and wrote down what I wanted on the burger saying they would dress it when it was ready. By the time I got the burger and opened it it was completely drenched in sauces, the toppings were spilling out, it was a disaster. Seemed intentional to me. Whilst trying to eat my poorly made burger, another employee reached over our table causing us to have to duck down while he was grabbing somthing in the kitchen..could they not have walked into the kitchen to get it? Also they have employees who hog a 4 seat table to themselves playing video games, meanwhile people are standing around waiting for a table to open up...
