This morning I had my first skateboard lesson here (a Christmas gift from my wife). In between I've been here for a bunch of early morning sessions to skate around on wonderfully smooth concrete. Of the three parks I go to regularly (Burgess, Beresford, and this one), this is my favorite (though I'll be the first to acknowledge that I'm still a beginner who can find enough of a challenge skating parking lots and curbs). I'm a bit more interested in flatland than the bowls so I think this will continue to be my favorite place to skate. There's an outer loop that you can take around the whole park, with ramps of differing grades, really good for beginners like me to figure out balance and kick turns. There's a small bowl and a large bowl and I haven't spent too much time in them yet. There are also a bunch of steps and rails...not sure if I'll ever be able to put them to good use. It's quiet in the mornings, especially before 9a, so old dads like me can get a lot of practice time in when we arrive at 730a.

There is also a narrow street section closest to the soccer field with stairs and places to grind. The rules seem a bit much, but no one was there to enforce. They probably have them to avoid lawsuits, without saying "Skate at your own risk." It was getting late and the light was fading, but the lights from the soccer field were helpful, even though it's a dawn to dusk park. Helmets and pads? Didn't see any. No bikes, no scooters? They were both there. No one bothered anyone. Chill. There was a group smoking outside the skate park, but inside it was clean--respect for that. I think no one wants to pay to enter because the city has to pay to have someone clean the skate park.

There's so much going on, a soccer field, a skate park, a duck pond, tennis course, swimming pool, and plenty of small paths for walking. There's also a library on-site that I haven't checked out yet. With all the space and variety, it's a great place to spend time outdoors. Also a bonus is when the ducks have small babies running around, they are the cutest to watch as the little ducklings bring a smile to my face. There's plenty of parking, and with a police station nearby, it feels like a fairly safe park even in the evenings. My husband and I used to walk here all the time, and it's a great place to enjoy the outdoors.

However, I have noticed some safety and maintenance issues lately that hold it back from being a perfect 5-star experience. My main concern is safety regarding motorized vehicles. I frequently see local teens and kids--sometimes even elementary-aged children accompanied by their parents--riding gas-powered mini bikes or loud electric dirt bikes directly on the sports fields and paved walking paths. It is unclear whether there are explicit rules prohibiting these vehicles in the park, but no one is around to monitor the situation, and it honestly feels dangerous for pedestrians, field users, and anyone on the paved paths. Additionally, while the park is well-maintained overall, certain small details need closer attention. Specifically, some of the water fountains are poorly adjusted--either barely trickling or spraying water in every direction. It's a fantastic park overall, but better patrolling, clearer safety regulations, and quicker equipment maintenance are definitely needed to keep everyone safe. 4 out of 5 stars.

Trail Off Manmade…read morelake that was a former landfill site and was first conceived back in 1968 by the City of Mountain View to give it's residents a place to play by the water. It wasn't until 1983 when it was actually dedicated, but it's been a staple of the area since. The Good: *Watercraft rentals *Free to visit *Large parking lot *I guess there's a restaurant of some sort but didn't visit or check out. *Access to the SF Bay Trail that take you around various sloughs and to other parks, if one is into a longer hike. *Great birdwatching due to the proximity to The Bay. The Meh: *Very busy place and the parking lots full up fast--especially during the summer. *Be aware part of the Bay Trail does allow puppers, but the other part DOES NOT. So, be aware of signage. The Ugly: *No shade on the Slough trails *Lots of bugs, so wear your DEET. Conclusion: Great shoreland park with plenty of amenities, but it's popularity is it's biggest curse. That and the bugs. But mostly the popularity.

I recently visited for a stroll around the North Shore recreational area, and found it really fun and peaceful. The parking was free, easy, and there weren't too many people, though I suspect it could get popular during weekends or the summer due to the various activities to be had here. It's next to a local landmark, Rengstorff House, and a golf course and Shoreline Amphitheatre. Shoreline Parklands is mainly host to a large park and trail where you can walk, bike, and observe nature, and a large lake where you can sail on various boats. They also offer paddle boating, which could be a fun organizational offsite! There is virtually no shade if that matters to you, but the grounds are more or less flat. At the time, a company was renting out the boat house space for a party. The boat house also does equipment rentals (you can book online) and have tons of lockers. We saw huge groups of coots and geese, and a lot of squirrels with their own personalities. In fact, some squirrels looked like hybrid squirrels... It was definitely interesting observing the thriving nature in this area. We even witnessed some squirrels in heat.

Looking back, the only thing I would change is if they could organize the basketball game a bit more, like break up to 2 games so it's 5 on 5 instead of like 20 kids on the court at once. The food was good, given it's supposed to be mainly for kids birthday parties (pizza, wings, nachos, fries etc). From a party planning perspective I really enjoyed how easy it was to plan. I just had to show up and they did most of the legwork. I do wish they had more seating or space for the parents/family. The table only accommodates the kids, and given how much you are spending for a 90minute slot, it would be better to have more table space for the parents to eat too. Other than that, the experience was great and all the kids in my party played really hard and had a great time!
