Not sure what's going on here. Purchased one $80 king crab leg on NYE afternoon and it was not good. Messaged them directly to let them know and zero response. I do understand there is a King Crab shortage happening but with that being said; maybe don't sell old freezer burned stinky ones to your customers in the mean time. A better play would have been to not have sold them. Have gotten seafood from Burhops over the years my whole life and after this I won't be back. read more

My girlfriend recommended Burhop's to me and I'm so glad she did. First off, the people here are so nice! I was craving a lobster roll and called here to see if they had any available. The lobster roll hit the spot. I would have ate it in the car but didn't want to drop any of it. I also got the clam chowder which was decent. I really like my clam chowder creamy like the ones from Splash Cafe in Pismo Beach, California. They mentioned that they could also grill any fish too! I'm so excited to try the fish next time. Although, I may have to order the lobster roll again. The lobster roll is better than the Hampton Social ones. They also have curbside pick up. read more

It's an expensive but quality-laden fish shop! So don't be surprised when the lobster salad is $70/lb. Still, there are some decent prices. Perhaps unsurprisingly, you can find frozen tilapia with interesting flavors for about $5-9 each. The people who work there are helpful. I felt bad that they were spread thin, but they did an awesome job. The Jamaican man who worked at the fish counter was super helpful and tipped me off to deveined, peeled raw shrimp that I hadn't seen yet. (He then wound up having to work the register too, which he did well, but I felt bad he had to do all of that back and forth.) The raw shrimp I cooked on the stovetop were the best tasting shrimp I have ever made. They had a beautifully fresh smell and taste after being cooked. It was like the shrimp I eat at restaurants, not the middling quality I could find at many grocery stores. I will go back for their seafood, but it's not cheap, so I probably won't be doing that every day or anything ;) read more

I come from the northeast coast to visit family in Kenilworth so my standards for seafood quality and freshness are high. Burhop's does not come close to meeting them. Just look at their seafood display. Seafood that should be glistening with freshness looks dull and flat. The lobster roll is poor at any price (and very expensive at Burhop's). Terrible customer service. Silly me for wanting to go to an actual fish venue for some tuna salad right? On FOUR different occassions I've visited this particular location and they're either out of, or simply don't have tuna salad. Today's particular visit, I guess I must've been the 100th guest of the day because I asked about the tuna salad and was informed thats all they had which was like two or three sparse spoonfuls, the person who preps it would be leaving for the day in a few minutes (love those get off at midday hours!) and he's "not making any more for the day" so, I guess people like myself who have a hankering for basic prepared tuna salad are SOL for the rest of the day. I guess they should hang a sign so the customers know to shop on the food preparer's schedule. read more

My husband and I stopped here for a lobster roll last week. What a disappointment! For $24, this was a soggy mess, mostly celery with a few finely chopped, unrecognizable pieces of lobster. This is the second time we have had this experience at this restaurant (we decided to return last week to give them a second chance because we'd so enjoyed the lobster rolls here in past years). We've shopped here for fresh fish for years (when it was under different management) and hope they'll return to the previous excellent quality. read more

They sold me 2oz of 3 week expired caviar and the manager Adam was unwilling to swap it out in-kind for fresh caviar that they had in stock since it was a more expensive type. He offered me a discount on 1oz which didn't feel adequate for the inconvenience. You would expect more from a long-standing local business. read more

Little known secret: Burhops will take any kind of fish from the cooler and grill a fish sandwich for you, outside on a charcoal grill. The sandwiches come on a big fluffy bun with lettuce, tomato, onions and your choice of mustard or red pepper sauce. I go with the red pepper sauce. The also throw in some coleslaw, I recommend the oil and vinegar slaw, its tastier and healthier than the creamy stuff. The whole process takes about 15 minutes usually, and you can call your order in in advance. Depending on the kind of fish you choose it will cost you between $5 and $7. I don't know if they still do the sandwiches during the winter months or not, but you need to check this out. Besides their lunch service, the seafood and wine selections are both excellent. I highly recommend their in-house marinades, as well as the mango salsa; the staff can tell you what will go well with what. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, they treated me like a true regular after only my third or forth visit. read more

Burhop's is THE specialty seafood store in the area. You can count on everything being fresh and tasty. My family has bought its fish almost exclusively at Burhop's since I was a really little kid - that's probably at least twenty years, and my family eats tons of seafood - and only had a bad experience once. (That once involved my mom cooking a whole Dungeness crab, smelling the air, declaring it 'bad' and dumping the whole thing straight in the trash without further comment. So it is possible that my mom was just having a bad day, which is not Burhops' fault.) The place, while full of fish, hardly even smells fishy - it just smells clean, like the oceanfront. Their lobsters and crabs wander around in a large pool made out of rock with a waterfall aerating it. Now if my fate were to be boiled alive, I'd at least want to spend my last days in that tank rather than in any other tank I've ever seen lobsters and crabs kept in. The employees are so helpful and will treat you well whether you're a seasoned fish chef or you ask stupid questions like, 'does this go in the oven?' They have a good selection of marinades and sauces that they'll recommend to go with whichever fish you choose. There's nothing bad I can say about this place. And for the quality it's really not that insanely expensive. read more

Granted that the whole octopus we grilled was our first and did not turn as anticipated, Burhop's offers fresh fish at a reasonable price. Burhop's was recommended to us by our son's allergist. He's allergic to all fish with the exception of salmon. We were concerned about feeding him salmon with all of the possibilities for cross contamination. As a result of the care and concern of the Burhop's employees, our son has been able to safely enjoy salmon over the past two years. When we arrive, we explain his allergies and they always get out a fresh clean knife, cutting board, and paper for the scale and cutting board. We also rinse the salmon at home as an extra precaution. They always make us feel as a welcomed customer rather than a burden. We are forever grateful. read more

Bought a large and very very expensive whole lobster over the weekend of the 4th. asked that it be cut in half and the claws cracked. all well and good. i should have suspected the lack of attention to any sort of detail when the package was handed to me sloppily and wet. when i got it opened at home, the lobster was wrapped haphazardly in two pieces thrown together in plastic, and the tomally was left oozing all over the packaging and inside and outside of the lobster. it was a total mess and needed much attention before grilling. For the amount of money we spent, that no one asked if we'd like that removed (yes please) and that the man who waited on us did such a poor job of wrapping,and cleaning the whole lobster was just shocking. This wouldn't have happened when the older staff worked here and they are sorely missed. Buying the lobster here was a first, normally we just get crabcakes at this store. Too many other fisheries that do pay attention to detail .. this purchase was a total mistake. read more

Burhop's is overpriced and really lousy customer service. Went in a Thursday night because my friend lives close by. There was some sort of a concert going in the middle of the parking lot, which I guess is a regular Thursday Night thing at Del Largo. When I came in, the bearded guy behind the counter kinda curtly asked "Can I help you?" and so I stated that I'm looking for either trout or whitefish, to which he replied: "Oh... Your here to pickup fish?" Yea, why else would I be here? So, go and get my trout; Lake Superior Trout at $9.99 a lb and Farm Raised Idaho Ruby for $14.99 lb. Couldn't get what I needed of one so I had to get both. And... This stuff isn't particularly well scaled. For $9+ a lb, yea, I like my fish scaled and properly dressed. And the guy behind the counter is telling me "It's fine... No we don't scale". WHAT?!?! Begrudgingly, he did better dress the fish, but with obvious disdain and attitude. Fish was perfectly fine. Made lovely pan-roasted trout fillets with an orange and sherry sauce, hair-covert and almond and saffron rice. It was very good. Hey guys, I'm sorry it was 7:30p and maybe your hrs were being extended, but from the moment I walked in, it really just felt as if my money wasn't wanted nor needed. I'm going to stick with Sea-Ranch on Lake St in Wilmette. MUCH nicer customer service, providing sushi dressed and quality fish for about the same price. read more

What a disappointment. This place is run down and the quality is totally lacking. I asked for my salmon to be cleaned and there was skin still on, the fish soup I bought had little to no fish in it and I ended up having to put $100 worth of fish in my purse because they didn't have bags. There are some experiences you MUST communicate. I preordered2 dozen clams-- it was my birthday and I was preparing linguini and clam sauce. YUM! I entered the store-- a blonde entered the store 50 seconds AFTER me and the attendant served her BEFORE me. I politely turned to her and staid, 'HI' and just looked at her. The attendant rang her up and THEN said staid, ' Can I help you with something?' I said my name and reminded him of both my order and the fact that I had JUST called an verified their location because I had only patronized the Italian restaurant, and Char Crews the crystal store and was not familiar with their location. He the got my order. I was SILENT. Sometimes silence communicates more than a hissy fit. Embarrassed-- he rang me up -- and gave me a FREE lemon( how appropriate) for his MAJOR faux pas. Don't let me leave out the best part. I am both physically challenged and Black by culture. Don't fear -- I am not calling either my attorney nor the NAACP. Burhop's has been my top choice for buying fish or seafood for over 25 years. The staff is experienced, knowledgeable and friendly. Besides fresh fish and seafood they have various burritos, salmon and crab cakes and fresh soups made with seafood. They sell a variety of sauces to complement their fish as well as salads and smoked fish. This is a business that takes it commitment to their customers seriously. My boyfriend is a chef, so when we decided to make a variety of shellfish for a small dinner party last night, he wouldn't go anywhere other than Burhops. Since it is on the North Shore, I was worried about high prices and pretentious customers. I was wrong! (Thank God). We bought 3 dozen mussels for only $12 and 3 dozen oysters for about $20. Unbelievable!!! Even better, we got them back and opened them and they were all alive! (you can usually expect that a few will be dead; of the dozen I bought at Whole Foods a few months ago half were dead). The man who helped us was so nice and helpful - they didn't have quite enough of the cheaper oysters we wanted so he threw in about a half dozen of the more expensive variety at no extra charge. He also boxed everything up and asked if we wanted the shellfish on ice. They have an incredible variety of fresh seafood that is all very well priced. They also have a freezer full of pre-marinated and seasoned fish fillets that look DELICIOUS. Burhops Cocktail sauce has long been a favorite of mine and my boyfriend's family, its thick and has a perfect amount of horseradish. YUM! Burhops also has a small grocery section with some excellent looking Asian seasonings and sauces as well as other random delicious looking things. I never knew this place existed until my mom and I came here to pick up crab cakes for Christmas Eve. Burhop's employees are so friendly and all of the fish looked incredibly fresh. The crab cakes were a nice treat and not too bready. Hope to come back here soon! read more

As a long time customer of Burhops, wanted to compliment them on their fantastic product and customer service. Hadn't been to the store in a while and now will try to make it a regular stop. Superior knowledge, customer service, recommendations, and products. Bought organic Scottish salmon after being reminded that wild salmon not in season now, and some fresh halibut. Both fish were fresh and excellent and the salmon was the best salmon I've ever had at home. If you live in this part of town this is the place to go. It is all old timers there, no newbies, and the service can be testy, like in Europe where they will tell you you are dumb when they feel like it. So don't make a fool of yourself, you are supposed to know what you want. It is a great place to buy lobsters. I just wish they could make a home made Dijon mayonnaise. I doubt any of their sauce/dressing are made in house. read more
