This has been on my Chicago bucket list for years now! I had been craving a fish fillet sandwich and decided to come here. The staff were really nice and the service was great. Depending on how busy it is, you either go directly to the counter or pull a ticket. They fry everything based on demand, so expect to wait a few minutes for your food. I enjoyed my fish sandwich! If there was one thing that I could change, I wish they made their tartar sauce in house.

Went with sister specifically for fish sandwich and wanted to love this place. Unfortunately, was disappointed. Got two fish sandwiches, hush puppies and fried calamari. Hush puppies good, calamari was perfectly seasoned and tender but pretty small portion for the price. Both fish sandwiches were mediocre. Served on a cold bun that was bigger than the piece of fish. Bun should have been toasted or heated up a little. Completely took away from the fried fish and whole sandwich needed more seasoning or tartar sauce. Sister and I ended up still needing to go to Duke of Perth to get our fried fish fix.

I was craving some smoked white fish and this was one of the few places that popped up near by that carried it. The place was small but great. They had a good selection of smoked fish, fresh fish and shrimp and frozen seafood. I have been looking for frozen crawfish forever and I finally found it here. The also has some dry good and seafood utensils. This place is also good if you are craving fried fish or shrimp. I had a seafood Po-boy that was very good and packed with shrimp. They also will smoke fish for you if you bring it in which I have never seen before and is a cool service.

Horrible customer service after driving an hour to get there. One person on the counter and four people in the back

Love this spot! Fresh seafood and great prices! Been coming here since I was a kid. We always get shrimp and fish chips with a side of potato salad. Can't forget the cocktail sauce. Definitely need to try the sandwiches there sometime. The staff there always have friendly service. You can buy fish from the counter and they'll fry it for you and you can even bring in fish that you catch and they'll smoke it. There's also a market inside with anything that you'll need to cook the seafood that you buy such as spices, sauces, etc. Great neighborhood spot!

Found this family owned pickup/grocery store on Yelp. Glad I stumbled upon it because their spicy popcorn shrimp, jumbo shrimps and the shrimp po'boy was delicious. The service was amazing. This place definitely gets packed during certain of the day but I can see it's busy all day. Great place to come if you are craving any fried seafood or just need to purchase any fresh seafood.

Small seafood shop in Portage Park. They have an extensive menu, smoked and fresh fish/seafood, a small pantry of groceries, and anything you may need to prepare seafood. Service was amazing, friendly and knowledgeable. My calamari snack was so fresh, tasty, and perfectly seasoned.

I've driven by this place hundreds of times and I FINALLY tried it! This place is poppin on Fridays during Lent and indeed it was but the line moves fast! They do a very good job of taking orders efficiently. It's great that they have a private parking lot too! The shrimp po boy was delicious and the shrimp was very flavorful!! They do not skimp on the shrimp! I got my fries cajun style and I recommend you do too! I could've eaten 100 of their hush puppies. This is a family owned business that has been serving the community for years. They specialize in fried or smoked seafood, salads, and sandwiches. You can even bring in your own seafood and they can smoke it for you which is awesome! They also have a small convenient store inside where they sell things like seasonings, frozen seafood, pastas, crackers, etc.

Ask the Community - Hagen's Fish Market

Are the shrimp cleaned and deveined?

    Yes

Do they sell shucked clams and oysters?

Do they sell fresh & farm raised or only farm raised?

I recall seeing signs for both. But availability might change with the seasons.

When it first opened, it was great to see how bright and clean it was and to see all of the incredible stacked foods and items. However, over the years it's definitely been worn down a little bit and could use a new refresh. What has been good is that they really expanded some of the seating area as well as the seafood city Grill area and the food offerings. However even this is slightly inconsistent as far as what's available when it's open, etc. It's also great that this particular location also is able to build out some of the other additional vendors like the bakery by Valerio. Again, though, I wish there was a little bit more consistency and organization throughout. Parking lot is has been quite ample except during peak times. I really wish they would open one in the suburbs as well. The only major disappointing thing was I used to carry the best Chicharron by Saint Michaels and then they absolutely abused and price gouged the bags. And eventually they stopped carrying it. I however, have gone directly to the stores to purchase.

They added an enclosed outdoor seating area, Thats lets you enjoy the breeze or sun, but protects you from the rain. It used to be a tent, so this is definitely nicer. My wife and I were seated immediately. The server quickly brought us water and garlic bread. I really like that they give you 5 fairly big pieces of garlic bread for only two people. Nice touch. We were not in a hurry and couldn't decide what we wanted so we started with the calamari salad. $29, but it's huge and chock full of those calamari guys. Lettuce is always crisp and has everything I like in it (olives, eggs, carrots, artichoke, peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, and romaine lettuce). We were almost full just from the salad alone. I ordered a grouper sandwich (not fried), and my lovely wife ordered the Scottish salmon plate, which comes with potatoes and grilled vegetables. My sandwich came with coleslaw and fresh cut fries. They switched to fresh cut since my last visit, and this was an upgrade. My sandwich was great, and huge too. Could not finish it. Wife's meal was a humongous slab of salmon. The veggies now come on a smaller plate, but that's okay, given the size of the fish. Service was a tad slow, but like I said, we weren't in any hurry. Total tab was $100, with tax and that pesky 3% service fee. I really enjoyed the food and the ambiance. It's not a place I can go every week, but when I can splurge, and have a taste for fresh seafood, this is the best around.

The lobster roll was mostly bread and very little lobster. The lobster in it was very small, stringy pieces and nothing like the large chunks in their own Instagram images. I would be willing to pay more for a better sandwich with more (and better) lobster. It wasn't premium lobster in look or taste to be honest. This sandwich, in its current form, is a hard pass. Mussels were okay. A few that didn't open, but that's to be expected. I'm not sure how fresh they were since they had a bit of a fishier scent. They give you a head of garlic, a lemon, a baguette and a tub of compound butter. It's great in theory, but the butter was tasteless and I could just as easily used my own butter and other ingredients. The customer service was okay. We called ahead to make sure they had all of the elements of the mussels as part of the package and the person ringing me up still had no idea what I was talking about. In the end she made sure everything was there after I brought it up so it was fine. One other issue I had was that they just put the mussel mesh bag in my bag and they leaked mussel juice/water over everything else in the bag. Two of those things were tinned fish gifts for someone else and the cardboard was soaked in fishy smelling liquid. I know there is a new owner and I really hope he does the things he needs to improve and make this place worth it. Right now I can't see going back when there are places like Boston Fish Market that get it right.
