I started to take away a star for the price & the fact that albeit spending $30 for a mere pound of shrimp that you still had to purchase cocktail sauce. The shrimp is ok, you can definitely tell the oil they're frying them in is upstanding quality. The cocktail sauce is definitely amongst the best in the city. There's something about eat a whole smoked mackerel. I'm a fan of this super oily fish. It's incredibly satisfying and on hot days where I don't feel like turning on my stove and just want a big hunk of omega 3 protein, this hits the spot! Cool little spot for seafood items and smoked seafood. I ordered a pound of bbq smoked salmon and a pound of smoked salmon candy. When I got home I discovered they gave me a pound of smoked garlic pepper salmon instead of the bbq I asked for so taking one star off since they messed up half my order. Hush puppies good, calamari was perfectly seasoned and tender but pretty small portion for the price. Both fish sandwiches were mediocre. Served on a cold bun that was bigger than the piece of fish. Bun should have been toasted or heated up a little. Completely took away from the fried fish and whole sandwich needed more seasoning or tartar sauce. Love this spot! Fresh seafood and great prices! Been coming here since I was a kid. We always get shrimp and fish chips with a side of potato salad. Can't forget the cocktail sauce. Definitely need to try the sandwiches there sometime. The staff there always have friendly service. You can buy fish from the counter and they'll fry it for you and you can even bring in fish that you catch and they'll smoke it. I've driven by this place hundreds of times and I FINALLY tried it! This place is poppin on Fridays during Lent and indeed it was but the line moves fast! I have been coming here for years and their fish and everything there is exceptional. However, my last experience a few days ago was disappointing. I brought a visiting friend from California for their fried shrimp and fried scallops because I had told him how great it was. So we ordered a pound of each. We ordered a pound of coleslaw and a pound of macaroni salad with two cocktail sauces which is exceptional and two ranc h dressing. . We got home and we had no cocktail sauce, we had no ranch dressing, and instead of coleslaw we wound up with potato salad. It was too far for us to come home so I can today later and told them about the mixup. He said he was sorry however they made no effort to make it right in someway. I found this very disappointing, especially since I had told my friend how good it was and here we did not have our complete order and part of the order was wrong. I worked here at age 16 in 1987-88 so it's perfect place for fresh seafood or lake fish. The fried shrimp and scallops are very good. The fried perch is also very popular. Fried smelt is also popular, but not like shrimp and scallops. I never tasted perch or smelt, just saw it purchased often and repeat customers. Everything is fresh and hand breaded. Also, the cocktails shrimp are very good if you're in market for that. The jumbo cocktail shrimp are also very good. The place is time capsule with unique grocery items and accompaniments on the shelves. The coolers are stocked with cold cans of soda/pop with good selection and variety. Also the store gets absolutely mobbed and packed during certain holidays and other days (weekends) for its reputation for quality and value. Also, the Cole slaw or macaroni salad from the salad case is popular and goes good with friend fish. And I never ate them but the smoked fish is very popular and the smoked chubbs have popularity for buyers similar to the fried shrimp. I don't mean they sell chubbs in same quantity just that they sell a lot and it's most popular among smoked fish sold in the case on counter closest to the window. This is the place to get your fish in NW side of Chicago. It's family owned and 3 generations running it and I am sure a 4th generation is either running it or soon to be. The family back in 1987-88 were very nice, almost ideal, like Waltons, sober hard working parents and nice kids, not loud or popularity seekers. German Lutheran principled people continuing a family legacy that doesn't need change. Shrimp and scallops hot out of the fryer with sauce either mild or hot is a good choice, probably the specialty. But everything else is fresh and good and popular with some so if you need to inquire about Hagens you must be new to area because it's that good and well known. Definitely go here and get your food. Any price difference from other competitors is probably negligible or based on quality. It's not over priced. Its highest quality and they are just as methodical and thorough about the cleanliness of the store and back of store with freezers, coolers, smokers, floors, at least they were when I worked there as 16 year old and I don't think that would change because it's just like a good recipe, same steps for cooking and same steps for cleaning, consistently repeated and never veered away from. OK, I have eaten, and hear ye hear ye my tummy now speaks. In order of preference, I liked: 1) smoked salmon steaks at $15.99/lb 2) smoked mackerel at $8.99/lb 3) smoked garlic & pepper salmon at $21.99/lb 4) smoked salmon candy at $21.99/lb It appears the ranking naturally takes into account the value side of the equation. I really liked the bone-in salmon steaks. Good smoky flavor and it was very easy to navigate around what bones were there. I would also get the smoked mackerel again as it was also tasty and an excellent value. Both of the pricier salmon fillets were of course deboned, but also thinner cuts, and they turned out to be drier I think probably due to their thinness. Don't get me wrong though, they were still very enjoyable. I'd rate Hagen's ahead of Calumet Fisheries, and so until proven otherwise, I'd say Hagen's has the best smoked fish in Chicagoland. But... compared against Charlie's Smokehouse in Door County, Charlie's is still the best in my known universe lol. Charlie's Smokehouse salmon cuts are larger and thicker and I think that contributes to their smoked salmon being more moist while still being very smoky flavorful. Plus, you can't beat their price. This is my third time at Hagen's since I 'discovered' it a few weeks ago. The Italian seafood salad is amazing. I buy the large size container just to make sure some is left by the time I get home. Brought my 24 year old son and wife with me this time. After buying our assortment of fresh walleye pike, smoked trout, smoked salmon, smoked salmon candy and fish salad, my son thought he needed a sandwich and came back with a catfish po'boy.
