Will definitely not order from this store again! I ordered yardage online and paid another $10 to have it shipped, only to receive an empty envelope. I trust that there was actually fabric in the envelope when it was mailed, but of course can't prove that either. When I contacted the company, I was basically told too bad that's your problem not ours and to file a complaint with the postal service. I was reimbursed for the fabric by the postal service, but not the postage. When I again contacted Burkholder, I pretty much got the same not our problem answer. The USPS forms specifically state to claim the product only and not shipping and handling, so I got no fabric, no help, and lost $10 and my time and irritation! read more

The largest quilting cotton selection ever! They have an aisle with dress fabric. The store was so large I didn't go through it all. I think they had a flannel section. The staff were really friendly, answered questions and even helped me pick out fabric when I needed something specific to finish a project. Would definitely go back. They have a separate place that is a B & B style place close by where you can get together with your sewing buddies and stay for a sewing retreat. read more

I discovered this fabric store by mistake and I am ever so glad I did! If you sign up for their email you get coupons for percentages off -- a friendly lady who was leaving had an extra one and gave it to me - 25%. Unbelievable. The store is jampacked with everything you'd ever need for quilting including a huge a huge selection of sale fabrics --- lots and lots of batiks. Really friendly, helpful people, lots of ideas, and an almost overwhelming assortment of top quality fabric. Well worth a little extra time traveling to get there. read more

Large selection of quilting fabric, lots of good designers. I always find fabrics that aren't available at my usual haunts. Downside, a bit more expensive than your average lancaster area fabric store. $8-$10 (or more depending on what you're getting) is average for Burkholders. I am used to places like Zooks in Intercourse who have their cotton fabric (especially solids) priced reasonably low. I will mention that Burkholders has a large clearance section in the very back, I purchased some fabrics for $3-$5 a yard last time I was there. Summary: Larger selection= Higher prices. I am very dissatisfied with this stores costumer service. I had a coupon for 15% off of an over 100 dollar order. I handed the cashier my credit card and reached Into my purse for the coupon. As I was reaching for the coupon she started to scan my card. I said I have a coupon and went to hand it to her. She said the transaction is started and would not take it. She then said you "forgot it" as I was standing there holding the coupon. Needless to say they have lost a high dollar customer plus all my friends at quilt guild who will most definitely hear about this unfortunate incident. read more

I ordered a few yards of fabric from Burkholder's via their website and have absolutely no complaints. They stocked the specific print I was looking for as well as lots of other prints from that line (so, good selection there, I'm guessing); they were offering it at a nice discount (inventory reduction sale or some such); shipping costs were reasonable; and they shipped fast, even at Christmastime. 4 stars out of 5, as I've never physically been to the store. If you'd asked me 2 weeks ago about this store, I'd be writing a much more favorable review. After my experience last week, two stars is about as generous as I'm going to be able to muster. I've been visiting this store off and on for about 10 years. For the greater Lancaster area, the variety of fabrics is impressive, but I will echo another reviewer in that you pay for that variety - to the tune of $1-2 per yard more than competitors 20-30 minutes away. Since I normally visit 8-10 fabric shops on any given trip, I generally pace my spending, but have always managed to spend a lot of money here. To better illustrate my most recent experience, I'm going to copy/paste from the email I sent to the Owner after this last trip. So far, I haven't received any acknowledgement from the Manager/Owner. May 4, 2015 Hello, This message is actually intended for the Owner or Manager of your store as I need to make him or her aware of a customer service issue from my most recent visit last Wednesday, April 29th. I make the trek from Virginia to the Lancaster area 1-2 times per year for fabric-buying excursions. I've made Burkholder's my first stop for the last couple of years because I've always been amazed by the variety. With the TravelHost coupon I pick up at the PA Welcome Center or my guild discount, it brings your price point down to a competitive level for the region. I always bring friends with me, and we spend sizable amounts of money. Last Wednesday, as we were stuck in traffic on Rt. 30 trying to get to you, we had time to look up the discount tab on your website. We were excited that the "Linda's Birthday Sale" was still going on - we'd thought we'd missed it based on the timing of our trip. We had still picked up the TravelHost coupon flyer, because there are other places on there we planned to visit as well, and two of us had guild cards at the ready - just in case. When the cashier rang my order up, I held my smartphone up to her and said "What do you need to see? I have the website discount page pulled up. We were so excited to see that the 25% sale was still going on." (We had even talked about the birthday sale as she was cutting out my fabric). She proceeded to tell me that she only needed to see my email, so I pulled that up for her after closing the web link. I thought my total seemed a little higher than I was expecting, but I had no reason to doubt the cashier's competence at that point. I only discovered it when we got back to our rental house that evening, and our entire party was missing the 25% off piece on their receipts. I called the next morning, hoping to rectify the situation, thinking that it should not be a problem since your check-out process is computerized. I had my receipt and the invoice number ready. The first lady who answered the phone was polite, but after a brief run-down of the issue, passed me off to a woman who identified herself only as, "I'm the one who checked you out." According to her, the 25% off sale was online-only, and there was nothing she could do. When I asked why she didn't share that information while we were SPECIFICALLY talking about it in the store, her response was - and I quote - "It's not our fault you can't read and understand what's on sale." I then told her that the website did NOT say online-only, but had that been the case, I had a TravelHost coupon or a guild card. I would NOT travel that far out of my way to come away with no discount. She again reiterated that, "It's not our fault, and all sales are final." I told her I found her to be unbelievable in the way she was speaking to me, and I hung up as she launched into Round #3 of, "It's not our fault." I had no reason to believe the 25% wouldn't apply to in-store purchases. In what universe do online customers get better discounts than the people who take their time to make a physical presence in your brick-and-mortar storefront? That Code "Party" could have just as easily been entered into your computerized check-out system and applied to any in-store sale. I am not looking for my $30+ back at this point. I'll chalk it up as an expensive lesson, and I'll spend my time and resources elsewhere. What I would like is to know that you as a Manager or Owner do not endorse this behavior in any way. That Associate is a detriment to your business. As I'm sure you know, quilting is a luxury hobby - not a necessity. People who have the discretionary income to shop in your store will not tolerate being condescended to in such a manner. Unfortunately, what I discovered on Yelp and TripAdvisor reviews after I got home was that mine was not an isolated incident. This is a pattern. Out of all the stores we have traveled, this is our favorite! Whether we are trying to match something or find something new and different, we can always depend on Burkholders. We belong to a quilting group in Baltimore and visit the store every chance we get along with staying at the Martin's house twice a year. We call it our second home! Burkholders has consistently been the best fabric store around. I use to live close to Pennsylvania and now I travel 4 1/2 hours each way to get to them. Their selection is fantastic and great customer service. I recently had to email them a photo of my fabric ( I hadn't bought enough for a project) , they identified it and shipped to me what I needed. I had it in 2 days!! I love this place. I am an out of state quilter who along with my buddies make a monthly three hour trip to the Lancaster area. I have found that there is no comparison to Burkholders & Sauders or Zooks. Burkholders carries the most current line of fabrics & blends, a full line of solids & fabrics & if you are into novelty fabric, you find it at Burkholders also. They have frequent, great sales like the 25% Memorial Day sale. If there is no sale, they offer all guild members a 15% discount. Sauders & Zooks carries mostly older lines of fabric. The rarely offer their usually 10% sale & the website sales are usually the older lines. I shop all three stores & would be fair in saying I think Burkholders is the tops. read more

I have quilted my whole life and Burkholder's for me does not compare to Sauder's, in Denver, PA and Zook's Fabrics in Intercourse, PA. I went to Burkholoder's one time and it is a pretty store, however in this economy or even when the economy was better, I appreciate the selection and prices Sauder's and Zook's offer. Yes, Sauder's does not have an inside bathroom but there is a nice Turkey Hill a mile away with one, and my husband can get a newspaper before we go back. Zook's has a bathroom inside. I also order from there website (www.zandsfabrics.com) all the time, because I only have the chance to go to the stores a handful of times each year. I will stick with my two favorites, because they are both owned by a very nice and knowledgeable gentleman, who has been very helpful and accommodating to me and my quilt group. He has 4 warehouse sales each year at Sauders, which I just love. Hooray Bargains!!! read more
