First off, yes this place is the house on that hill that you aren't sure about (don't worry, no axe murderers here). It's humbly located behind/on the side of their home. Looking at prior reviews, and being a protein lover, I immediately knew I was going to get the peanut butter doughnut (apologies to those who suffer from peanut allergies, it must be a hard life). Waltzing into the humble bakery, I immediately spotted the two remaining peanut butter doughnuts left in their showcase and pulled the trigger. Also threw in an extra chocolate bavarian filling. Both were very good. The doughnut dough is simply delightful - dense but soft, pillowy yet textured, just the right amount of bite. Did I mention all three doughnuts were less than $3 for the lot? The most cream in a cream fill that I have ever seen. I have never had any cream fills quite like these. The workers are very friendly. Some times what you want is not in the show case or maybe there are only a few. They just finish them while you wait from a basic donut already made up. When I go Sharpsburg it's as though Burkholder's bakery call my name, especially for cream fills. The place is quiet and people are very friendly. read more

Don't go here if you have any kind of nut allergy. They'll make a product that is chocked full of walnuts and then not label it. Fortunately Walgreens was close by and I was able to take my sister there for some Zyrtec before her throat completely closed up. I don't actually think it's legal to mislabel products like this but of course nothing will happen - buyer beware. read more

If you're in the state of Maryland go out of your way to stop here! We accidentally found this bakery while visiting Antietam national battlefield. It's in the middle of nowhere and just looks like someone's house but let me tell you it is worth stopping. They had a huge assortment of fresh donuts for $1 and tons of other goodies like chocolate chip cookies fresh baked breads apple fritters and pies. Everything looked amazing and was so cheap! My sister and I got an assortment of things and everything was so delicious and fresh! The apple fritter was phenomenal and I would go back just for that! The breads and pies are just incredible, everything is well-priced and everyone is friendly. We are now trying to keep up a weekly Burkholder's trip tradition for the sourdough bread and the homemade pie. This week we got a peach pie and it was still warm. Top it all off with the local dairy and eggs, and the delicious farm cheese and the local convenience... this place couldn't get any better. They even do special orders! read more

The staff is friendly and the donuts are great. For starters they use chocolate galore in their chocolate donuts, no substitutes like the chains. It's a commercial bakery with a retail section that includes a deli. There are a limited number of seats otherwise this would get give stars. read more

As a child growing up in Jersey, I grew up eating sugary and fatty Italian baked goods on too frequent of a basis. When it wasn't St. Josephs (aka zeppole/sfinge) it was cannoli or napoleons. But Amish bakeries are a whole different ball of wax. So when the lady and I were in town at a Bed and Breakfast (the Jacob Rohrbach Inn, see my review), we searched before the weekend to figure out what there was to do in the area. This, not surprisingly, did not come up on our list - there are no other reviews on Yelp, and it's in the back of someone's house. But none of that matters. Because the baked goods were delicious. This place is nothing short of Amish bakery heaven. You park in the back and enter a small door, where most of the baking appears to take place. There's fresh milk in the fridge (not raw, thankfully, but delicious nonetheless), and freshly-baked cookies, breads, and other pastries. There's about a 6'x3' space to stand while ordering, and the staff isn't the friendliest bunch of folks around. (I'm not convinced it's the stereotypical "we hate 'the English'" attitude that is so quickly attributed to the Amish, but anything's possible.) The assortment of baked goods isn't huge - two smallish glass cabinets, a tall cabinet of breads, and a refrigerator of milk, cheeses, and other cold items - but everything is cheap and delicious. I'd be hard pressed to remember exactly what we got at this point - it was 7 or 8 months ago. We definitely got milk and some tasty breads, and snacked on them after we found a nice place to sit. I wouldn't say it's worth driving all the way out there for just this, but if you're in Sharpsburg or Sheperdstown, it's worth typing 106 East High Street into your GPS. Just remember they're not open on Sundays. read more

This Mennonite bakery is the best in the area! They have the best lemon poppy seed scones I've ever tasted. I have yet to try something from there that I don't like. Their prices are very fair. Their pepperoni rolls are delicious, as is their cheese bread (ask, and they'll slice it for you). There is a sign on the door that asks you respect their religion and not wear clothes that are too revealing (something to that extent). read more

Went one block and remembered the amazing Peanut Butter icing Scott brings every now and then. So I turned around and went in Glad I did! This is the place you are looking for! These are simply the best donuts that I have ever eaten. The peanut butter frosting is excellent, but all of the flavors are terrific. The cinnamon twists are wonderful! Donuts, cakes, pies - all made with quality ingredients, fresh from the oven, reasonably priced. You'll never go to Dunkin' or WalMart for baked goods once you've had Burkholder's. Don't forget - the donuts freeze well and are just as delicious when they thaw, so buy an extra dozen and save yourself the driving. read more

Worth the trip!! We stopped by on a Saturday 3 weeks ago, on our way to the Antietam Battlefield. A sign on the sliding glass door said they were closing at noon and it was 12:20, so we were bummed. But a very kind older gentleman unlocked the slider and let us in to the yummiest-smelling little bakery. He and his wife were so sweet - Mr. Burkholder, I wish I'd taken your picture! The donuts were all delicious, large, and very reasonably priced. I will go out of my way to go back next time I'm traveling from Dulles. I love independent small businesses anyway, but Burkholder's Baked Goods is a treasure. Go ahead and pull up the drive across front of the house, and around to the back to park, and on around to the other side of the house(addition) to the sliding door. Arrived! Enjoy! read more

An excellent bakery. The donuts were some of the best I ever had - the frosting was very creamy and sweet, especially on the peanut butter donuts. One friend liked them a lot too. My other friend wasn't that impressed, she found the frosting too sweet. The donuts were only 50 cents a piece. If I lived nearby, I would frequently go for the donuts, but we were just visiting Antietam. The Russian tea cakes were OK, and the chocolate covered peanut balls basically taste like Reese's. Make sure to go at noon or earlier, we went back later to make sure we had enough for friends and all their best donuts were sold out! read more

Yes, they have the best donuts - better than dunkin donuts and maybe Krispy Kreme. The frostings were very creamy. I came in before they close so almost everything was already gone. The donuts were a bit dry but that's to be expected because it was almost 5pm when I went. Oh but they're really good when they're fresh - early in the morning. I stop freguently at the bakery owned by the Burkholder's on Route 63 going towards Huyetts. I have tried just about everything and also love the milk, and butter. But I won't be buying from them anymore. They ask that they be respected, well how about we the public. I am an older lady and I was paying for my items and I mentioned about stopping after work to buy bread because they were out at that time, and the young lady said, "an old lady like you still working" I then called Mr. Burkholder and he laughed about it which is ignorant. Wearing a bonnet does not cover their rudeness. They want respect because of their religion,how about respect for their customers. They won't get my dime any more. read more

We heard about Burkholder's from a coworker. We checked them out and was pleasantly surprised. The owners are very nice people. The baked goods are delicious. I live in Shepherdstown now and have recently discovered this small bakery. I go there regularly now and get things like fresh bread, dinner rolls, pepperoni rolls, butter cookies, muffins, donuts, etc! Their donuts are the best that I've ever had, honestly, and they're baked too! Some people think that the ladies who work there are not very friendly, and although sometimes they don't say much, most of them smile at you and wish you a good day.
