Fun little place! Very much an old country style diner, like a local version of Cracker Barrel, right down to the store with everything you could ever want with their name on it! We ordered the Rueben and the brisket grilled cheese. Both were outstanding! I had the potato salad which was OK but my son got the onion rings which were very good. And freeze them so we don't eat them all in one day. My only complaint is the parking spots are super narrow. Trust me, it causes unnecessary stress, especially when it's crowded/busy. The people are always friendly. Service is not super speedy. But it's this real cooked food. The Mac and cheese is good. And the food menu is always on point. On the way back from camping this summer, the host said The Apple House was a must try. I'm going to start reviewing my restaurants like I'm dating. If this was a first date I'd think, dang this would have to be a long distance relationship. Not sure I'd drive all the way to come here often but if in the area I'd make a stop again. Reminded me of a faster version of Cracker Barrel. It was a group of us and we all stopped. You have to pay and then find a seat, it definitely stays packed. We got lucky to get a table! I stopped here on the way to Linden Winery for some donuts and apple cider. The line for food was long but one of the employees came to let me know that they have fresh donuts by one of the other registers for an express checkout. I ended up doing that instead. The donuts were 9/10! Very good. The employees were very nice and helpful. The ambiance was what you would a "side of the road" store/restaurant. Nestled inside a charming rustic mini-market stocked with jams, apple butter, fresh fruit items, and more, this spot is no frills but serves up a classic American breakfast and one of the best warm apple cider donuts I have ever had. While driving home from Shenandoah, I had a small group and we stop by this place called The Apple House. This is a first time for me and I have to tell ya. As I walked in, I didn't know where to go because there were so many souvenirs, hot sauces, clothes, signs, jams and wines. If you walk to the left you can order breakfast, apple butter donuts, sandwiches, burgers, pork bbq and they have limited seating as well. If you walk to the far right, a new addition called Bushel Pub, they offer appetizers, salads, variety of sandwiches from chicken, seafood, pulled pork, BLT, hot dogs, cold brews and cold beverages. So 6 items ordered: 1) Fried Fish Sandwich 2) Hot Dog 3) Po' Boy Sandwich 4) Fried Corn Hushpuppies 5) Sweet Tea 6) Apple Butter Donut. When the fried fish sandwich arrive to the table, served with fries, 2 slices of dill pickle. With the first bite, I heard the crunch from the crispy fried fish, lettuce, tomato and tartar sauce. They had some other sauces on the table so I add this one sauce title cayenne-habanero wing sauce. Let me tell you, by adding that sauce with every bite, it really enhances the flavors and that whole sandwich was absolutely delicious. The fries were crispy and well seasoned. The hot dog plate served with your selected sides which I chose bake beans. I topped the hot dog with ketchup and cayenne-habanero sauce. The hot dog had a nice snap on the casting, it was delicious but I couldn't say the same thing about their bake beans. It was unique and different because it had not just baked beans but also kidney beans, black beans, chickpea, and pineapple. It was a little sweet for me. I wash it down with the sweet tea and the sweetness was on point and refreshing. The fried corn hushpuppies were also crispy on the outside, fluffy in the inside and it was delicious. There were two sauces as choices and I chose the Cajun remoulade but because it was already delicious, it didn't need it. As for the apple donut, on the menu it stated they were apple butter but everyone was telling me they were apple cider. For me, the donuts were soft and fluffy but there was just too much sugar coating on the outside. Overall, the experience at the Pub was worth the trip. All staff members from the Apple House and Bushel Pub were friendly, patient, genuine and knowledgeable. The atmosphere and hospitality was superb. One of the places that regularly came up as a "must try" when in the area was The Apple House, so of course we made a pit stop on our drive home. We chose to take out from their food truck because their restaurant was packed and enjoyed our lunch at one of their picnic tables conveniently located near the parking lot. Their chicken was nicely breaded & fried, not dry in the least bit. I personally prefer a spicy Nashville chicken, but the flavor overall was good! As we were packing up from our camping adventure, the host of the event suggested we stop by The Apple House on our way home. He spoke so highly of the apple donuts, apple cider and their breakfast, it was a no brainer to hit this spot instead of our original plan of dining at the "Waffle House", which we always enjoy. Although we didn't partake in any of the apple offering, we did however order breakfast. It's a mix between self service and full service. You order and pay at the register and then it's served to you after you pick your own table. The process is a little clunky but it works. We initially was given the wrong food but they quickly fixed the mistake. The food was good but her blueberry pancakes were outstanding. She said the best she's ever had and I'd say tied with the best.. Lol! I would describe the Tha Apple House as a more "mom and pop" version of The Cracker Barrel. It has a loaded store area where you can find any sauce and spice your heart can desire but the dining area is rather small but it does have a few outdoor tables that you can take advantage of. The Apple House is definitely my kind of place and next time, we're getting those damn donuts.. Lol! read more

We stopped for breakfast at the Apple House on the way to Shenandoah National Park. It offers a fun, down home atmosphere, though the food is only so-so. Seemed expensive, too; $42 with tip for breakfast for two. In addition to the small restaurant, there is a cool country store with food items, clothing, and other odds and ends. There is a very nice looking pub there, too. I would love to check that out on a future visit. A nice place to stop, but I wouldn't characterize it as must-do. read more

We finally visited The Apple House (TAH) last Tuesday, 4/28, after passing it for years on our trips to the Shenandoah. Here is what you should know in case you are planning a visit. TAH is a Cracker Barrel- esque restaurant that has a store inside with tchotchkes, stuffed toys, souvenirs, crafts, tshirts, totes, etc... that is just fun to browse, or take home. TAH is a cafeteria-style eatery rather than a traditional sit-down restaurant. It has two sections (store is sort of in the middle) one located to the right side is a pub while the one on the left, brighter side is alcohol-free and has their famous apple cider donuts and pies. Both have slightly different primarily American fares menu which are posted on the walls behind the cashiers. The ordering process is self-service: line up, order from the wall menus, pay, and gather your own drinks and condiments. Staff members bring the food to your table, which took some time, so imagine a longer wait time during peak hours and weekends when it gets crowded. Seating is limited and space is tight so have a family member/friend grab a seat before ordering. We ordered food from and sat on the non-pub side (left) of TAH. The food was quite good--we highly recommend the excellent pulled pork with mac and cheese. The grilled cheese, burgers, and apple cider donuts were also enjoyable. If it is your first time visiting, be sure to ask for a free sample of their famous apple cider donuts. Bottom line: TAH is a clean, reasonably priced, good food, and a worthwhile stop for a casual meal or takeout on your way to hiking, camping, or leaf peeping in the Shenandoah. read more

The store is super cool too and has a lot of different things for everybody. They got some pretty funny apparel and merch, and a myriad of hot sauces for sale. I live an hour and a half from the Apple house and if I am anywhere near it is a special detour stop to go to. This last trip we drove an hour out of our way to go and guess what?! It was worth it. I had to stop here on the way back to try out the famous apple donuts. The establishment has been around for a long time and it's such a cute spot. Very rustic. You order upfront and then bring the items to your table. They have vegetarian options but they are very limited. Their burgers are made from bison and I did not try it because well I wasn't feeling too adventurous. We opted for grilled cheese and fries and yes we did the chicken tenders for the kids. If you have fries with the kids meal there is an up charge on $1.99. The rest of the sides are no charge. We opted for the fries and baked apple. I purchased the famous apple Donut as well. The person taking the orders was really friendly and answered all my questions with professionalism and a smile on her face even though there was quite a line of people. The tables are rustic and they look into the road. They are filled with bottles of ketchup, barbecue , jams etc. The food- the grilled cheese on white was crispy and nice. Nothing to write home about but yes it was nice. The fries were crispy too. The chicken strips were crispy and my son enjoyed it. The baked apple was nice but I'm not sure my kids liked the texture. The donut was nice and light. It does taste very fresh and not too sweet. They do sell larger packs of donuts but one was enough for me. I'm so glad I was on a search for some apple cider donuts because it led me to one of the best burgers I've ever had. We thought we were just really hungry the first time around so we came back to try again, and it was even better the second time. I ordered the regular jumbo burger, and added cheddar cheese, jalapeños, onions, and pickles to it. The toppings were all so fresh, but the star of this burger is the beef patty and the brioche bun that holds it together. The beef patty is some of the best freshest beef patties I've had, and it was SO good. The quality of the beef patty is unrivaled to others I've had, and basically tastes like a really good cut of steak (but ground up into a patty). The brioche bun has a slight undertone of sweetness that complements the beef patty so well. Then you have the pickles that are just fresh and delicious--not too sour, not too sweet, all the other toppings, and the mayo for the finishing touch. We don't live nearby, but when we crave a burger next, we will most definitely make the drive over. The fries are just regular, but I think it's complements the star of a burger well. We've also had the coleslaw and potato salad which are just okay but they do their job. The collard greens were delicious and fresh. And the Mac and cheese was decent as well. The pork bbq sandwich was overwhelming because it had so much meat. For the meat lovers, it's perfect, but we ended up taking half of the meat out. Cooked and seasoned well, but it was just okay for us. The star, again, was the burger. And back to the apple butter donuts (the original reason I came here), I was on a search for a really good apple cider donut, and frankly I think we like the Great Country Farms' better (we tried so many in the area this season). We originally purchased the half dozen and ate it later when it got cold, and it was so covered in cinnamon sugar we had to wipe off what we could get off. It was way too sweet. Then the next visit we ordered one to have immediately. The warm fresh donut definitely was much better, but still way too sugared, but you could taste that apple butter flavor better. Besides the overload of sugar, the donuts kept falling apart and wouldn't hold its form. The inside kept separating from the outer "shell" of the donut which made it a messy treat. But overall still a good donut when fresh. Like others mentioned, this is a restaurant within a shop. There is a bar area and a dining area off the sides of the central "shop" portion. They have a bunch of sauces, treats and snacks, and a random assortment of things. Great for browsing, but there was nothing we ended up buying. There's outdoor and indoor seating. And the lines and wait for food definitely can get long, but that burger is so worth it. We got lucky with seats each time (order at the counter and seat yourself situation, and staff comes with the orders to the dining area calling out your order number), but easily could be a wait for tables. It's worth the pause from the interstate. However.... If you are in desperate need of a restroom, this is not the place. There is only one bathroom for women and one for men. Stopped in this past weekend for their legendary apple butter donuts! The attached restaurant was not open but their early morning cafe was. We came in around 8am on a Sunday, I was surprised by how busy it already was inside. We ordered coffees which you can make yourself at their coffee bar, breakfast sandwiches, and 6 donuts. The donuts were warm, slightly crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. The sandwich was delicious I loved how soft and chewy the bagel was. The interior has a cabin style vibe with picnic tables by their indoor cafe. We had a great time exploring their store, they carry great items for gifting. Lots of baked goods, sweets, apparel, and cooking sets. They carry gag gift hot sauces and provide the option to taste a lot of them. They are buttery, sugary, cinnamony circles of sheer delight. There are two restaurants inside. We went to the one serving breakfast and sandwiches. The other side has a more elaborate and fun menu, but we didn't learn about it until we'd ordered. You order at the counter, pick a table and they bring the food out. The place is not fancy but comfortable. The servers are friendly and work hard. My husband had an egg, hash brown browns and biscuit breakfast which was fantastic. Portions are generous and eggs cooked perfectly. The biscuits are freshly made and flaking. I had a daily special egg salad sandwich with cole slaw. The sandwich was huge served on the most delicious marble rye bread. The sandwich was so big that I only ate half. Their cole slaw is delicious. It's not a mayonnaise based slaw, but a marinated pickled slaw. My brother had a brisket sandwich which was really good. The meat is tender. The place is popular with weekend travelers and gets crowded. The parking lot is a hot mess. It's crowded, tight and poorly laid out. There is not enough parking on a busy day. There are not enough restroom facilities. There is one bathroom for men and women. I waited almost 30 minutes in line. There is a gift shop that offers some local merchandise, tee shirts and trinkets. If I returned, I would eat on the south side as the menu is more interesting. This place will always have a soft spot in my heart for having some of the best cider donuts in the DMV- it's surprisingly hard to find good ones and these are my favorites, they're always soft, fresh, and flavorful. It's about an hour out from DC and well worth the drive! The store truly has a bit of everything, but my favorite shelves to browse are the local treats- there are housemade jams, jellies, salsas, fruit butters, and syrups in a wide range of flavors, as well as other made in Virginia products like peanut assortments. There's also an impressive collection of hot sauces, some of which are available to sample. We dined here twice (once on a quiet Friday evening and once on a busy Monday afternoon), both times on the more casual side on the left side of the Apple House. The right side has a more full-service style restaurant with a bar. The food is classic and delicious comfort food that we enjoyed both times. I will say it gets pretty hectic at peak hours- on Monday afternoon, we had to wait half an hour for one grilled cheese brisket sandwich. It's really nice and cozy if you're there when it isn't too busy, but I highly recommend ordering ahead with their online ordering system if you're in a rush. read more

OK. This is the place for Apple Cider Donuts. Is it a bit far from the NOVA/DC area? Yes. But, it's worth a trip to sample these. I bought a package of six to take home, but needed to sample one in the parking lot. They were moist and full of flavor. A winner! And if you are looking for more, they do have a couple of restaurants inside. One that focuses mostly on breakfast (and it's where you buy the donuts). The other spot on the other side of the establishment offers more of lunch/dinner options with a bar. And of course, in the middle is their general store where you can find all sorts of knickknacks.
