God I have so many mixed feeling about this place. One it's comfortable but small. The selection is good but they charge a fee just to sit and smoke (atleast have some canned soda around if you do this). Lastly, if you're a woman you're going to have a vastly different experience than if you were born a male. They will either creep on you or act like you don't deserve equal respect. The staff is friendly enough. Nice selection of smokes, but they are priced a good 15% higher than other tobacconists on the peninsula. The lounge is small yet fairly nice, but they charge $10 to use it on top of the products you purchase. No other shop on the peninsula does this, but I suppose they have to make up for the exorbitant Burlingame rent somehow. In future I will go a little further to San Mateo where the shop is nicer, prices more reasonable, and there is no lounge charge. read more

Cigar shops have been brutalized by the Ontario Government over the last couple of decades. It's slowly getting stupid in California. From what I understand, Irvine CA, is a smoke free city! Yep. No smoking. Even in your house! If you are smoking and your neighbour finds that it is impacting the enjoyment of their property because wisps of smoke is crossing into their airspace....they call the cops! Holy...that's tough. Haven't got here yet but with the Liberals gone, maybe things will improve for the embattled shop owners. Nonetheless, Burlingame is not Irvine and the Burlingame Tobacconists is a great find. It seems that every place I go there is a decent cigar shop in no-smoke-Cali. I stepped into BT cause my breakfast place had a pretty long wait. It was quite a pleasant find and Norm the shopkeeper is quite the entertaining and knowledgeable man. We got into all sorts of topics like his favourite place to visit regularly was Toronto until he found Montreal. Now he's a Quebecer for life...LOL! We talked about growing regions. Which cigars are the best overall. Also got a quick history of some of the people that use the backroom lounge to hide from their wives - or some from the law. He recounted a story of a chap that was arrested right out of the lounge - more than once this has occurred. I guess if your on the lam, a small town is where you want to disappear. The shop itself is small and packed with cigars from all regions - minus Cuba. Norm said that if Cuba and the USA opened trade, there would be no cuban cigars for the rest of the world. It seems that the USA consumes 50% of all worldly cigar production. Truth or not, I do know that Canada will get less to no product if anything of that nature should happen. I ended up picking up a small assortment of cigars. What I do like is the whole service and selection. What I don't like is having people handle my cigars. I like to be able to see the box and the cigars in it. In small places like this, the boxes are broken open and some cigars are taken out and put into smaller boxes or displays. Too much handling. When encased in plastic - kinda ok. When not, too much handling can damage the cigar. Prices are somewhere between North Carolina and Ontario prices. Not great but not bad. Cheers! read more

I was called upon to purchase Davidoff cigarettes. Thanks to Yelp, I found Burlingame Tobacconists, gave them a call and they said they had the "Slims" in stock -- and so off I went to pick them up. The nice gentlemen who I spoke to over the phone was the same guy who sold me the packs. He even educated me on what other brands of cigarettes have the smoothest flavor. Incidentally, we got to talking about who was "Zino Davidoff" and how well known Davidoff Cuban cigars would be! He said --- "Châteaux Series cigars were out of this world and a Cuban-made Davidoff Dom Pérignon with its namesake, Dom Pérignon champagne" was named after the infamous champagne. Talk about getting an education on history of cigars and cigarettes. I'm a bit of a history buff myself so how cool is that? I walked away from Burlingame Tobacconists knowing two things: 1. The Burlingame Tobacconists shop was my go-to cigar store during the five years I lived in The City and The 'Game. Located on Burlingame Avenue, this shop has a really good selection of cigars in every size, sourced from all over the world, with a variety of wrappers. They offer good smokes for any budget. In addition to the wide range of standard cigars, they offer more brands of cigarillos than any other place I have visited. I like this because I have friends in China who love cigarillos and I usually bring some over to them when I visit. I took advantage of a trip to BG on Sunday to stock up on cigarillos to take on a trip in January. This is also a good place to buy high-end cigarettes like Nat Shermans if that's your thing. The staff is very knowledgeable. On my recent visit a friend was asking about sweet tipped cigars (blegh, right?). Although they don't carry them, the owner steered my friend towards a specific brand from the Phillipines which he says is the one to have. The back room is a smoking parlor. I have lived in both Boston and California and can tell you that a good cigar store is hard to come by. Sure there are a lot of "okay" or "average" cigar stores but they are always lacking something. They have friendly, personable staff who are happy to make recommendations but will not be pushy or judge you by you're appearance. They also have one of the best selections I have ever seen, literally covered floor to ceiling with perfectly maintained humidors including an entire section for the hard to find and delicious Davidoff series. Head to the back and a cozy lounge awaits with plush leather seats and big screen TV's. Stop in and ask for Rob or Mario and you won't be disappointed. My girlfriends and I planned a trip to Carmel to golf and I thought it'd be nice to bring along a celebratory cigar. We're all pretty green when it comes to choosing a cigar, so I wanted to find a place that was helpful and didn't talk to me in a condescending manner. I found that place in Burlingame Tobacconists. This is a small hole in the wall with a smoking room in the back. The back room looked kinda shady, but I guess that's par for a smoking room. It's conveniently located on Burlingame Ave. and the staff is very helpful. I walked in and told the guy I'm a beginning smoker. He proceeded to rattle off a bunch of qualities that I should be looking for in a starter cigar, and it sounded good. So he chose a lovely cigar, made by Monte Cristo, and told me to take my time in moving up the cigar ladder. I really appreciated his time and expertise, and especially the fact that he didn't treat me like a little girl. This place was a random stop on our way back to the airport, but agreeably, the best shop we visited while there! This place was established in the 1940's and definitely shows its character and age. When we walked in, we felt like we'd walked through a time machine. Although it seems quite crowded, the entire place is lined with wall cigar humidors. The guy that was working at the time (can't remember his name), was pleasant and a joker. I'm not sure that his knowledge about each specific cigar was great, but he knows a lot about the shop and about most of the lines they carry. He had a lot of cool information about Avo Uvezian for instance and how he actually comes there for his birthday and plays piano sometimes for their parties. They also had an excellent pipe selection on the back wall, along with tons of loose tobacco in jars. When we walked a little further into the back, we saw a beautiful sitting area filled with nice leather chairs and a bunch of TV's, which was playing all of the Wimbledon matches that were playing at that time. If you're in the San Francisco area, please stop in here. They are around 5 minutes from the airport and it is worth the stop.
