The BEST coffee in London. Hands down! Let me just tell you that I spent 3 weeks in London drinking crappy coffee from every coffee shop recommended to a girl that LIVES for strong Cuban espresso style cappuccinos. So leaving South Florida for London didn't help my caffeine addiction at all. We originally took the tube to Brixton to go to a record shop my bf and I had been eyeballing for awhile and when we got there the record shop wasn't open yet. We really had no intentions of eating breakfast or grabbing coffee, as I had pretty much given up on the London coffee scene, but I'm more then happy that by chance we decided to sit down at Burnt Toast cafe and wait for the record shop to open. This little cafe is in the brixton village market surrounded by cute shops and the early morning hustle and bustle of Brixton. The seating is all outside as the inside is only big enough for the ovens, cook and the massive amounts of bread, but it's so lovely. There are cute tables set up with everything you need and the service was wonderful and quick. My boyfriend order a cappuccino and pancakes, and I ordered a double espresso and smoked salmon on toast with cream cheese and cucumbers. When the coffee arrived I tasted my espresso and immediately expressed to my bf "wow, this is the strongest espresso I've had in 3 weeks. Let me taste your cappuccino." I immediately ordered a cappuccino as fast as I could catch our server, because it truly is great coffee and very well could be the best in London. And just when I thought this place couldn't get any better, the food arrived. My food was way bigger then I thought and absolutely delicious, and my bf's pancakes were literally some of the best pancakes I've ever had. And I've eaten a lottttttttt Of pancakes. Had a very late breakfast here today and it was possibly thee most delicious French toast I've ever had. My hubby got the half English breakfast and it was perfect. It came with its own fresh bread for you to toast as you please. Staff was very nice and attentive despite being steadily busy. Prices were more than reasonable. BE AWARE: they only accept cash! The best part is where this place is located: a very cute marketplace with several shops, bars, and places to eat. We're going back tomorrow to try the pancakes! read more

Honestly, disappointing in every way. I was looking forward to this based on reviews but I can not recommend this spot to anyone who has the capacity to head over to Iceland of Sainsbury's and get some prepackaged cheese slices and deli meat and a loaf of corporate sliced bread. It is less than mediocre and took almost an hour for a piece of toast and packaged processed food as the plated meal. Really poor and should not be given the ranking it has currently received. The potential to be a great spot is there -- but the amount of time for the one cook/chef to make a basic plate is truly stunningly slow and the quality of the assembled dish is just bad and nothing to ever want to eat or pay for every again. Get some quality ingredients -- London is amazing .. why serve crap food to people and pretend its fashionable? Why? read more

The second offering from the Breads Etc empire! It's a different beast from the popular Clapham original, but I really like it. You're afforded a more personal, friendly and unique experience here. More families and Brixton folk, less moody hungover Clapham-ites! No indoor seating - it's essentially a bakery with a couple of ovens inside the shop itself - you find yourself huddled around corner tables jutting out into the aisles of the Village Market. Blankets were provided and the coat definitely stayed on! So did the gloves. Shouldn't be a problem come the warmer months! The menu is simpler too. 4 slices of different bread with a wide option of sides to make your meal as big as you'd like. I'd recommend the sausage, and the soft boiled eggs were some of the best I've had in a loooong time. The popular DIY toasters remain and they have all the spreads and toppings you're likely to need. Great coffees to be had here too. The staff are super friendly and chatty and, given they're a relatively new beast, very eager to make sure you're happy and looked after. Brixton Village is a great spot to wander around before or after your food - lots of boutiques and niche shops. A very pleasant experience all round! read more

Atkin's dieters beware, Breads Etcetera is your nemesis. Sister branch to Breads Etcetera in Clapham, this little place is a welcome addition for Brixton Village with it's strong following and unique concept. Wow, I sound like a knob just reading that back, but seriously, this place s sound. Toasters on the table, £2.50 for a selection of four slices of bread, other breakfast items are £1.50 - £4. It's that simple. The food is average, a little disappointing when you consider that you've just paid £1.50 for a small tomato and a half. Saying all that, it was the fabulous waitress I had that mad this place pretty perfect. You sit outside and there are little blankets provided to put over your lap if you get cold. The menu and table sharing is explained to you and you order your coffee. Out it come. Out come your breakfast. If like me you manage to drop an item in your coffee, lets say... a half boiled egg for example, this lovely lady will whip it away and get you a fresh cup. No matter that you've already drunk half. She understands your need for coffee, your need! I'll be back, maybe in summer. I like this area so much, it's super fun to mooch around on a weekend. read more

Burnt Toast is one of those places that's always busy, even if the rest of the market is still waking up. A couple of weeks ago we went early enough to snaffle a couple of seats and it was so worth it. I had the French Toast with Maple Syrup and Bacon, as I had a case of USA-nostalgia that morning. What arrived on my plate was the perfect antidote - moreish, not-too-sweet syrup, bacon cooked exactly right... I could have eaten it all twice. My companion ordered the special, corned beef hash and poached eggs, and even to me (a confirmed egg-phobe) it looked delicious. Both of these dishes, and the really smooth coffees, were unbelievably cheap for such a popular spot. The staff are really personable, chatty, swift and accommodating. Just go early, because boy does it fill up quick. And for very good reason. read more

After surveying Brixton Market breakfast/brunch options with a couple of friends on a Sunday morning, we chose Burnt Toast. It seemed to be the busiest spot of the lot and the pancakes looked heavenly while the bread divine, so seemed to be a no-brainer. If you've spent much time at Brixton Market, you can probably already appreciate the set-up, but to give newcomers a sense, Burnt Toast has about 10 tables strewn outside a small kitchen. There are toasters on the side which I thought was a nice touch, giving us customers ultimate control over the timing and toastiness of our toast. After queuing for about 30 min, we were seated. We were under some pressure from the clock given we were on our way to a movie, so had to order immediately. I ordered the scrambled eggs with a homemade english muffin and my friends ordered the sausage, bacon and egg roll and toasted bread with cheese and mushrooms. We also got the pancake with berries to share between the three of us. Sadly, there seemed to be some miscommunication between the waiter and me. First, he brought regular toast instead of the english muffin (easily remedied though), and second, he served french toast instead of pancakes. He said it would only be 5 minutes until the pancakes were ready which would be okay for us timing-wise, but 12 minutes went by and the pancakes still hadn't arrived so we had to cancel them. The food which did arrive was good, but nothing stellar (granted we did order fairly straightforward dishes). The coffee and fresh juices (orange and apple) were probably the stand-outs. Overall, I'm giving this place 4 stars because I really want to like it and I hope to give it another shot, but based on the food and service we had it should probably be 3 stars. I'm chalking the spotty service up to the general busy-ness of the place and feel like I can't properly rate the food until I return for the pancakes. Stay tuned! read more

I took my family who were visiting overnight to Burnt Toast for breakfast the next day and our experience was nothing short of horrendous. One of my party and I ordered the eggs florentine and the remaining two (my mother and sister) ordered the full English breakfast. All four of the eggs in the florentine order were poached to such an extent that they could easily have been deployed as WMD. We therefore returned our breakfasts and asked for soft poached eggs to be prepared. My mother took a bite of one of the sausages on her plate (disguised with baked beans and other breakfast ingredients) only to realise after swallowing it that the sausage was COMPLETELY raw inside. Upon further inspection it appeared that the sausage had gone from the fridge to her plate without ever going through the equally if not more important process of being cooked. As our waitress had disappeared inside the restaurant and we couldn't get her attention, I took the sausage into her on a saucer to ask for it to be cooked further. The chef immediately marched over to me put the sausage into his mouth and when I commented that he should be careful as it wasn't cooked he tossed it back onto the plate and stormed off without muttering a word, doing his very best 'I am the mute Gordon Ramsay of the fry ups' impression. In all honesty my party and I should have vacated the restaurant at that stage - we had only ordered cooked breakfasts not Pâté de Canard en Croûte - which the moody chef was clearly incapable of preparing to even the most basic safety standards. We left having partially consumed our breakfasts with a late apology from the waitress and £52 worse off (a complete rip off even if the breakfasts had been cooked properly). To add insult to injury (or in this case perhaps it should be the other way around) my mother and sister spent the rest of their day projectile vomiting and with severe headaches. They were unable to continue with their plans for the rest of the day, including missing out on a jazz concert that they had prepaid tickets for. Had I (at 4 months' pregnant) consumed what they had the implications could have been even more serious. Anyone with even the most basic of catering training would understand the risks posed to consumers of serving them uncooked, processed pork. Burnt toast? In the interests of their customers' health and safety it's a shame that's not all they get wrong. Please avoid this 'eatery' unless you really do have a strong desire to pay for a severe bout of food poisoning. read more

I went to Burnt Toast this morning with a friend. Food was fine, coffee was OK. Service was appalling. Burnt Toast Cafe does not have facilities to pay by card and this is not made clear anywhere. We asked for the bill, left a card to pay and then were told rather rudely by the owner that we could only pay by cash (I mean really - who doesn't have facilities to pay by card these days? I wouldaahve been happy to pay a surcharge to avoid the inconvenience of having to find a cash machine). So I left to go to the cash machine and my friend ordered another coffee. the cash machine was not working and had to find somewhere else, but I was only gone at most 10 minutes. In this time the owner came over and asked my friend to leave the table and drink his coffee elsewhere so that other patrons could be seated. Quite rightly my friend refused and said that he was going to drink his coffee and that I would be back soon to pay the bill. After that two waitresses came over on seperate occasions and asked him to leave again! To be clear it is not as if we had only been sipping water at this table for a long time - we had ordered coffees and two breakfasts, and had probably been there at most half an hour. I am just astounded at how rude the staff were and how shortsighted their approach to their business is- we will never go back and we will tell others never to go there. STAY CLEAR OF THIS PLACE! You would be far better off getting breakfast at Federation where the coffee and service are far superior. read more
