There were four of us for brunch here on a Saturday, and it was a wonderful adventure. Food was great ---- esp. the cinnamon roll. I had my usual, and it was far from usual. It was just plain ol' scrambled eggs with broccoli and mushrooms, but it was better than I have ever had it anywhere. And the store was an added bonus. We came out with some boxed crackers and some cards. Highly recommend this, and easy to get to. I was excited to try this place and was very underwhelmed. Food was very good but overpriced. I had the chili and it was filled with huge chunks of all the ingredients, but temperature was lukewarm. Coffee was also not as hot as I like. Environment was fairly crowded and loud, also it was cold. I had to keep my coat on while eating. Between cool chili and cold room temp- it was not ideal. For some reason, a friend really likes this place, so I've been there quite a lot, giving it far more chances than I normally would (the sacrifices we make for our friends, lol). Bottom line - B&P is hit-or-miss. When they get it right, it's good. Not delicious, or scrumptious...but good. Here's the rub - the portions and preparation are crazy inconsistent. If you order cheese curds, they may come with enough to share with the table...or not. I'm always specific with my order indicating I don't want the "side" order, I want the large order of curds to share with my friends, but more than once, they have brought out a tiny condiment bowl with a few cheese curds...to share. It makes it even worse when you look to the table beside you and see the soup-sized bowl, piled high with cheese curds that came as the "side" for their meal. I've witnessed and experienced, over and over, one person getting a regular portion, and another getting almost nothing. I even attended one of their farm to table dinners. My bowl had an appropriate portion, but my neighbors bowl had about 1/3 of what mine had. Not right. Let's see, what's next - oh, their salads. Eh. They are generally loaded with blandest lettuce/greens available, and are piled onto a plate that is so small you cannot cut it or spear a bite on your fork without making a lot of it fall off the plate onto the table. The so-called "beet salad", is their regular salad with a spoonful of pickled beets on the edge of the plate. I don't know anyone (other than B&P) that would call that a "beet salad". The chicken on the chicken salad was dry and tough. The regular salad is, well, regular and blah. Carrots and celery are cut as though they are going on crudité platter, and cutting them into bite-size pieces takes us back to the issue of tiny overloaded plate that spills everything onto the table. I gave their salads 3 times at bat, and they struck out every time. They make a decent vegetarian chili, but I can't tell the difference between their vegetarian chili and their beef chili - if there was meat in it, I couldn't find it. So, let's talk about breakfast. Mmmm, breakfast! I love eggs benedict, and they offer some really interesting options. No matter what else is good on it, when it comes to eggs-bene, if the eggs aren't poached properly, it's ruined. I've ordered various versions of their eggs benedict, and one time (just one), the eggs were poached. The other times, they were basically misshaped hard-boiled eggs. Ugh! No more eggs bene for me (at B&P). What else can you have for breakfast? Their specialty French Toast offerings can be good - sometimes. On some days, they slice the bread to a thickness that allows the egg mixture to reach the middle and to be cooked, other times it's so thick that the middle of the French Toast is either dry, or if the egg mixture got in, still raw. So, time to try something foolproof - like oatmeal. Oatmeal should be pretty safe, right? I ordered a cup, with the yummy toppings - walnuts, brown sugar, bananas. I received a scant cup (I'll accept the argument that they were leaving room for toppings), walnuts, brown sugar, and 3 thin little slices of banana (that made the tiny paper container look huge by comparison) At first I thought, well, it is what it is (maybe they ran out of bananas), until my friend's order arrived. She had ordered the exact same thing. Her cup of oatmeal was full (no alleged "topping space"), and she received what looked like a quarter to a third of a sliced banana. So, portion inconsistency strikes again. On a positive note, my oatmeal was delicious (would have been better with banana). In their defense, when you bring a problem to their attention, B&P is ready to remedy it, and they do it with apologies and kindness (no attitude like you sometimes encounter other places) - but when the problems occur over and over and over...and over, remedies no longer suffice. Sure, they'll take back your breakfast (or dinner or lunch) and do it over - while your companions continue their meals (as they should - no sense in their meals being ruined by getting cold), and then when everyone's done, oh, good, here comes your meal, and you can eat alone. Yup, that's why I make plans with friends to go out to eat, so I can eat by myself. So, I actually got talked into giving B&P one more try (I know! I can't believe it either. At this point, I really only have myself to blame) I figured, stick with the oatmeal, because even if I got shorted on my portion, it's good oatmeal. It was cold. read more

I had the grilled cheese on excellent whole grain bread, others had burger ( small, more like sliders ), and a "panini" that was really just a variation on the grilled cheese sandwich. This is the real deal for anyone looking for local and organic foods. If they can't get local or organic, they will get fair trade. Someone commented that the prices were high. Part of that is likely due to the local, organic, and fair trade committment. I personally would rather pay for that. Definitely worth a stop if you are in the area. We ate here for breakfast AND lunch. We loved the local organic healthful menu. It was an added bonus to find that it was a mini "farmers market" type market as well with homemade jellies, jams, soups, etc. you can also buy beer, wine and other unique beverages. It's a beautiful environment. I will say the Fatali hot sauce is quite good, it's a nice though expensive small store and serves a range of vegetarian items. But i wanted it to be better. The veggie chili does have flavor that it could, the roasted veggie salad was just ok. And roasted veggies feel hard to me to get wrong. The kale and goat cheese omelet was okay. The atmosphere is gorgeous and for that alone it's great to sit with tea and read or work. And yes the eggs are good as far as organic and stuff. I like supporting an organic farm. This was an amazing experience! We went for lunch and I had the grilled cheese with bacon, it was absolutely fantastic. The coffee and iced tea was fantastic as well. The staff there were extremely helpful and made sure to make us feel like we were at home. The seating and the atmosphere was very welcoming and homey. We loved it so much we went there for breakfast the next day! While it was crowded, due to the farmers market, there was plenty of room and the food came out quickly. I had the biscuits and gravy and the tomato jam was amazing. I also loved their selection of local products and made sure to buy some to bring home. When we booked a stay in Beloit, my hubby did some research and found "bushel & peck's" for us to eat dinner. I did not know what to expect as I assumed we were going to a restaurant and was really happy when we walked in... Great place! It's a combination restaurant, market, library. We were there on a Thursday night -- not too crowded. The folks behind the counter when we ordered were wonderful... friendly and energetic. I ordered the grilled cheese with apple and basil tomato soup. My husband ordered the meatloaf sandwich and cheese curds. It's all organic and was ALL delicious! I loved the mustard sauce used for the cheese curds and when our server came over to start cleaning up, he informed me that it was a combination of their beer mustard and peach jalapeno mustard that is sold in the market. I had to purchase! And what we had left over from dinner, we got a lid for the cup the mustard was served in and took it to go. It was great with pretzels and was our travel munchie when we hit the road the next day. I should have bought more... we've only been home for a few days and half of it is gone. I highly recommend "bushel & peck's" and take some time to look at all of the homemade jarred goodies! read more

Had lunch here today....again. (I am a local.) It was $9 bucks for a small dish of pasta? Give me a break! Pasta is super cheap to make and should be a hefty serving. It was supposed to come with bread but did not. The deli and store are only 1/3 stocked? The place would look so much better and seem so much more successful if they spent a little $$$ and stocked the place....so you would have something to actually buy! It really is a shame as the setting is great...the building is cool but they simply cannot pull off the cool deli that you hope for when you walk in the door. When I'm in town to visit Beloit College for business, this is my go-to. Their slider burgers are probably the best burgers I have ever had. Finally diced and sauteed onions as well as cheese is loaded throughout the burger, but not overwhelmingly. A nice crust on the outside of the burger, and perfectly sized buns seal the deal. I enjoy their wide variety of sides--ranging from french fries to soup to pickled beets. I have had their pickle beets and a squash soup--both were worth raving about. I've been to eat at Bushel and Pecks many times and have found the food to be very tasty. The atmosphere is very casual and fun, I really enjoyed a chance to chat with friends and enjoy some good food. The only issue I've ever had at BandP is with payment...a few times I've hosted business lunches there and they don't always seem to know what to do when you need something special...example: to pay tax exempt or split up a check in a unique way. While I love the food, they could improve on the cashier/business side of things, particularly for someone trying to host a more professional lunch, when payment issues can be awkward for those attending. With that in mind I might not choose this spot for future, more professional, business functions...but I will definitely keep this at the top of my list for hanging with friends/family. read more

Never again. Lunch with business associates... so far so good. Enter the place, and it looks like a run-down desolate grocery store from the 70s. Needed to look around for more than a moment to understand where to order. The tables felt dirty, and there was fust hanging from the ceiling that surely wound up in the food. How could it not? Ordered a 1/2lb Angus Burger (presumptuously dubbed the "Ultimate Burger") and received a tiny patty on a small bun. I asked the waitress about it, and she assured me it was a 1/2 lb. Looked at the other 1/2 lb patty on someone else's plate, and it was bigger. Waitress apologized, blaming the kitchen, and rather than getting the correct order, announced she would refund the difference. Uhm... I didn't get what I ordered... Either get it right or make it free. Anyway, I took a bite. It was undercooked, and tasted like a food-service patty. I've had better Angus from McD's. The bun was stale and the cups were plastic. I love B&P's! They grow all they're own food, and it is great. Pick up a jar of pickles or other canned goods to take home with you. They have vegetarian items and meaty food too!
